I got my first tattoo ever done by Ken. He was very patient and helpful when I asked him questions about pain and tattoos in general. I was honestly very nervous about the pain. Ken reassures me saying I'll be okay and asked me if I'm ready a few times before he started. Ken did a great job transfering a graphic image on my phone to a real tattoo on my upper left shoulder. So, about 25 years ago I got two pretty big pieces. One on my abdomen from hip to hip and one on my lower back. Lucky for me it was my then boyfriend, Shane Woodward from Black Pelican Tattoos in Boca Raton, Fl. I guess at the end of the day you can bet your boyfriend is totally going to have your back. So years later, I come in here for a simple phrase. Artist did the stencil and asked if I liked it. I know this...I was super excited, super nervous and I feel certain my adrenaline had me in a state of ADHD. I looked at the stencil on my arm. Perfectly centered. Really great lines. Spelling correct. I really loved how it looked. And here is what I absolutely know. It is MY responsibility to make sure that what is going on my arm is perfectly how I want it. I honestly thought it was. Forward to the end of the session when tat was finished. Still adrenaline rushed and super sore, still ADHD and super excited for my silly but very special to me simple phrase on my arm. I STILL did not see it. I didn't even see it till I got home and calmed down a bit. I was really upset. Surely artist saw this. How could he possibly not. He did not have my back. To be sure, I went to the internet and looked and looked, hoping to find the lower case letter "t" that looked like the one you did. The way you did the "t' gave the word a whole new meaning. I did not find one ANYWHERE. I wonder if you got a kick out of it. Anyone in their right mind would know that the "t" now looked like a "p". And speaking of being in the right mind, please remember that people coming in for tats are nervous, and excited and adrenaline or pumping from pain and excitement. You could have had my back a little better than that. I was wanting a bunch of art done too. This phrase thing was just to get my feet wet again with a tattoo after 25 years. And wanted you to do it. I am not saying you name as a favor. You are an amazing artist. I don't know what you were thinking with the one fucking line you added for no sensible reason. I trusted you though. And I was super psyched at your talent. Your lines were amazing. Was it your personal little joke to yourself? There is just no way you did not know what that was going to look like. What can I say? They peer pressure you into buying a tattoo so much so that it's not even a sale anymore, they deny colors (if you wanna do a whole tattoo that's just pink they'll tell you it won't look good and they won't do it) and when they're doing the tattoo they don't ask if you want it filled or not they just assume. They don't double check your preference in the tattoo. If you got other tattoos and it's not appealing to them they will talk smack about your tattoo artist in front of you. Overall, it was the worst tattoo experience I ever had in my life. read more

had a DOPE experience with Riley today. I'm on a roadtrip from Seattle and found this gem of a shop in the mission district! Not only is my tattoo sick but the whole vibe was what really got me. Super chill and inviting and I feel like Riley went above and beyond. couple things to note: -they do accept walk-ins but I would call before if you can -there's only street parking in front of the shop and I believe you have to feed the meter anytime before 6, 2 hrs MAX, so if your gonna be longer I'd recommend parking in one of the close garages and walking over -cash only, if you don't happen to have any on you (like me lol) then there's a little gas station on the corner with an ATM. I just got done getting tattooed by him today and can't say enough good things about another positive experience. Joe always goes above and beyond what I was expecting and really hooks it up. My favorite thing about Joe is when he gets on a roll talking about stuff. it makes the tattoo experience more entertaining when he's talking about all his insider knowledge on just about any topic you can think of. Even after being the epitome of an unprepared tattoo client (literally forgot to eat, brought two people in their smaller work space, talked her ear off- don't try this at home kids), she was so patient, down-to-Earth, comforting, and most importantly, a bad ass tattoo artist. I had an American traditional dragon done on my forearm, while my sisters had a fern and a butterfly done. Her work is THE SHIT. You first walk in and think they just do stupid ''represent the bay area'' tats but these guys have serious talent. I chose to spend almost a grand on a tattoo from a place I knew nothing about- Simply because it was less than a block from my house and I am a lazy fuck. LUCKILY I was NOT disappointed!! I got a huge pinup piece on my ribs (I could imagine it's a hard place to tattoo bc you cant exactly be still since you've still got to breath) by Span. It's identical to the original piece of artwork which is pretty amazing because I dont think he had much experience with portrait style work. Very impressive. The place is pretty small so there's lots of chatting going on with the other dudes there. All pretty nice, down to earth guys.
