I can't say enough good things! My ac decided it was not going to work anymore this week, & I instantly started worrying all the expensive worries. I'd never had to call a repair company to fix the ac,& was concerned about the whole ordeal. Jerry showed up,& not only was he very polite, but took time explaining the process along the way. I called them to repair one of my tenants HVAC because they had a good rating on Yelp. First they confirmed a time of 8 to 12 tomorrow for a tech to arrive to perform repairs. Half hour later a woman calls me to ask for a $199 payment up front over the phone right now!!! Not a good way to deal with a new customer! Waste of time and effort. The technician stayed in touch and taught me some things that I didn't know how to do (my hubby used to but RIP). He was very nice and considerate and didn't make me feel like a dolt. I will definitely call them again if I have an issue with my A/C but my 4 star review is only because the price caused my heart to palpitate a little. But he fixed it and I'm happy. And they also have a semi annual maintenance plan in which they drain your water heater. I've heard you have to do that but no idea how. Almost like renting a husband for a year. read more

I make it a point to try and make good reviews and not the bad ones. So here's my account of the facts. Frias was sent to my home by American Home Shield. I was very hopeful to finally have a provider from AHS that had decent reviews!!. The tech was great, his assessment thorough, report was sent out and all was well... until a week later I had not heard back. So I go to Home shield and ask for an update, and it turns out my ticket had been closed. I call AHS and they tell me Friar's had closed it. After calling Friar's I was told that it was closed because AHS wasn't going to approve for replacement so they didn't want to work on it because they couldn't do the things that AHS was asking them and would not do patch work. Sounds great in theory but instead of advocating and fighting the good fight, they dropped my ticket. I get them to Re-open it, and work AHS to move things along. We got stuck AGAIN and they canceled it AGAIN. a Call to AHS's HVAC Approval's department was needed to go over some items missing in the report for them to proceed with approval for my cash out, or for them to approve the replacement. I get a quote for a replacement from Friars and they tell me to get a cash out from AHS. Well to get the Cash out I needed them to make that call. To this day, they didn't. I finally got AHS to reassign the ticket to another vendor and hopefully I'll be able to get a cash out to work with someone else. After this experience, I'm not hiring friars to replace the AC, Furnace and the duct work that is needed, regardless of my cash out. I'm certain that by clients who are simple repairs and paying for their replacements, they have great service and do good work. HVAC had some issues blowing a couple fuses this year so I called Reliable HVAC to diagnose. From Google searches, the most likely culprit was a failing capacitor which is pretty easy and affordable to replace. Reliable HVAC wanted to replace my entire condenser unit because (according to them) the compressor was bad and it's an older R22 unit so they would need to replace the compressor motor, replace the refrigerant with R410, and at that point I should just replace the entire AC condenser unit to the tune of over $5000. Called Friar's to come out instead (per another Yelp review who had issues with another company recommending a full AC unit replacement) and Friar's confirmed the capacitor failing. They replaced the capacitor and installed a hard start kit for under $500. Bottom line: if your AC unit isn't doing so great, get a second opinion when they ask to replace it all. If you're only getting one opinion, try Friars, they're more reasonable. Lastly, be informed. Google search your AC problem so you have a range of options first. If I hadn't, the first HVAC company would've kept trying to sucker me in for a $5000 replacement where they would take my very nice Carrier AC unit back to their shop. Thankfully, Friars is keeping my equipment running smoothly. read more

I had Friars come out and look at the wall heater at my mom's house while I was out of town. The problem was the heater would come on, but when it's cycled off, it wouldn't come back on again. Their technician told me over the phone that it needed a new venting system and high limit thermostat. Total cost was $1700. But they also recommended that the whole system be replaced at a much higher cost. Since it wasn't an emergency, I let them know that I would get other bids because of the high cost. The technician immediately said he could probably do the repair for about $1000. This made me suspicious so I paid the service fee and said I would get back to him. About a week later I had another company come out and look at it. They diagnosed that the pilot light needed to be cleaned. They spent a little over an hour doing it at a cost of $200. It has been working great for the last several months. read more

We called and received quotes from 3 different companies and friars was the most responsive and transparent. Being a mid sized company allowed for easy communication. Everyone I spoke with knew everyone's else. Our sales rep Nick wrote up multiple different proposals when we thought our HVAC needs were changing. He wasn't "pushy" actually advised me on a cheaper option than what I had in mind. He gave me his cell phone number and would responded to my changing ideas and provide new quotes. When we finally landed on a plan, they were the best price for the same products sempar Solaris was offering, by a lot. I guess sempar has to pay for those commercials and call center folks somehow. On the day of the install Miguel and Edgar were awesome. They were able to troubleshoot little things and kept the project moving. They were aware of our pets in the house and kept a very tidy workspace. Their supervisor ( forgot his name) stopped by at the completion of the project to ensure my satisfaction. They provided maintenance tips and were overall fantastic to work with. Transparent, responsive, accountable and great delivery. I waited a week or so before writing this review to ensure nothing crazy would happen. It all unfolded exactly how they said it would. Very happy customer. read more

We recently had a new HVAC system put in along with moving our heater from a hall closet to the attic. The entire process was awesome and the price was better than all competitors. From the first phone call to Friars until when they finished installation, every contact was friendly and professional. What happened next put Friars above all competition. On a Friday afternoon of the 4th of July weekend, our A/C unit stopped working (It ended up being a minor issue) so I emailed Friars at about 8:00 PM. I had no expectation of a response until after the holiday weekend but within an hour Roman and Rick not only responded but I had a service call scheduled for Saturday morning. They arrived on time and quickly took care of the issues and saved the holiday weekend. I cannot give a higher recommendation for Friars! read more

We noticed that although the home we purchased had AC, the entire house was not cooling very well. Particularly, the two primary rooms were much warmer than the rest of the house. We reached out to Friar's Heating and Air based on their Yelp reviews. When Michael came to the house to do the initial inspection to provide a quote, he told us that the reason the rooms were not cooling is because the AC unit was too old and needed to be upgraded to a larger unit to be sufficient for the square footage of the home. He assured us that upgrading the unit would resolve the issue and that the entire house, specifically the primary rooms, would be cooled. We trusted his assessment and agreed to hiring them to do the work which came to a total of $13,490. Initially, we were told it would take two days to complete the job. However, it ended up taking about 5 days due to a fence having to be removed (which we removed ourselves) and a new drain that had to be installed. When they finished installing the new unit and thermostat, they texted us and let us know they were done and quickly packed up their things and left. They did not bother to wait for anyone to be home or even call us to try to walk us through the job they had completed or check in with us. Over the next few days, we were surprised to see an additional charge of $2444 on our credit card. This charge was not part of the original contract and was never approved. When we inquired about the extra charge with the company, they said it was for "additional work" but that they would absorb the cost "as a courtesy" to us even though this charge was never communicated to us or agreed upon. Had we not noticed the charge, they would have gotten away with charging us an additional $2444 over the price quoted and agreed upon ($13,490) which we had already paid. Over the next couple of weeks, we were in the midst of a major heat wave. It became blatantly apparent that while the unit seemed to be cooling the kitchen, entryway, and hallway, the primary rooms were still not cooling and were incredibly warm. The AC unit was working but it was not cooling the rooms like Michael had assured us it would so we were very confused. We called Friar's to follow up and asked if someone could come out to check why the rooms were still not cooling. Chris came over to the house and upon inspection, told us that the reason the rooms were not cooling (and would not cool) is because the ducts were broken and needed to be replaced. He then told us that this would cost $600 per vent--a total of $4200. He said that the ducts were "outside the scope of the work completed." We were in shock since we were NEVER once told anything about ducts needing replacement during any of the previous interactions with the guys or the initial inspection that Michael completed. The guys who installed the unit spent a period of 5 days in our home and for some reason, never felt the need to tell us about ducts needing replacement. Michael had assured us that to cool the rooms, we needed to upgrade to a larger unit. He never recommended or even mentioned anything else. I called the company and communicated that we felt that the ducts should have been a part of the original quote/work and that a bigger, newer unit was pointless in resolving the issue we wanted resolved (cooling the entire house) without the ducts. The unit works but the rooms are still not cooling, which was the reason we called Friar's in the first place. We, of course, are not HVAC experts, so we trusted Friar's to inspect the house, make a recommendation to solve the issue, and provide us a quote. About an hour later, I get a call back, and unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the man who called me back. I wish that I did remember his name because he was so incredibly disrespectful, condescending, dismissive, and rude to me on the phone. When I explained to him why we felt that the ducts replacement was an oversight on their end, and that we should not have to pay and additional $4200 on top of what we had already paid, he kept telling me that "the AC unit works". He kept repeating that point and even likened replacing the ducts of the house to "replacing the windows of a car" which were not directly related to the AC unit. I am not an HVAC expert but I am certain that the ducts are a VITAL part of the HVAC system. So much so, that without them, no matter how big the actual AC unit is, the rooms will never cool. He kept talking over me and telling me that they would not replace the ducts for "free". Finally, after arguing with me for a long time, he told me to shop around and he would match the price (as if we would hire them again after all of this). After paying over $13k to this company, our rooms are still not cooling. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU STEER CLEAR of this company and get quotes from other companies who will be much more thorough, honest, and transparent with their work. read more

I was having an issue with my AC where there was a pretty bad smell coming out of it. I wasn't sure what the issue was so I called Friars and they seemed nice and really cared about the issue. They were able to get me in within 2 days which was a lot better than a couple other companies I called. They sent out Jaymes who arrived on time at the start of the window. He was professional and adhered to all the Covid protocols. He thoroughly inspected the AC and I didn't get the feeling that he was just there to make some quick money and get out. After about 90 minutes of work it seems like the problem is fixed. Not trustworthy. I had a technician come out to repair my ductless split mini system. The circuit board had gone out and rather than replacing the circuit board the tech tried telling me that I need to replace the entire AC unit and quoted me $8K. The tech repeatedly said that these units were like TVs and just need to be replaced rather than fixed, which is why you don't see TV repairman anymore. I explained to him that TVs were a couple of hundred rather than almost $10K. At one point he was using there being spider webs in the machine and it being dirty and close to the ocean as a justification to replace the unit (which doesn't have any rust of salt damage). He also said that you need to replace the interior unit and the exterior unit because they were matched which is completely false. The Mitsubishi units are interchangeable as long as they are the compatible model types. I own multifamily housing and have over 20 mini systems which I've managed for years and everything he said was false based on my experience. I have a tech from another company that is going to do the simple repair for a couple hundred dollars. Based on other reviews I was not expecting this but perhaps those reviews were for very basic services or people were sold on needing to replace units which could have been repaired. I will never work with this company again and I'm disappointed to have to pay $69 for the tech to come out and hook up the diagnostic machine and not even contact the manufacturer tech line and try to sell me an $8K replacement when it should have been a couple dollar repair service. read more

James came to my condo on time and performed a regular tune up in very reasonable time. He also provided some recommendations and explained the reasons for them, he was not alarmist or pushing for me to do those things right away, I never felt pressured to do them all at once. We agreed on doing a very small repair on the cable box along with the tune up. He was using mask and maintaining social distance, and using booties when entering the unit. Excellent service! I hired Friars to install a new AC unit and furnace to my home in fall 2020. The experience and level of customer service exceeded my expectations. I believe the week before was one of the hottest weeks on record in San Diego and I was working from home, desperate for AC. Jennifer was a great communicator and answered all my questions. She was able to get me an appointment much sooner than other companies I called. The experience with the technicians was also great. They were kind to my dog, wore masks, put plastic down to prevent any carpet damage, cleaned up, and did a really nice job making the unit look as good as possible on the side of our home. I had them come out to take a look at my pipe because it was leaking. The plumber showed up and I explained to him what was going on. He quoted me around $400 to change the motor that pumps and drains the water out to the sewer. Then I ask if I don't want to use the motor anymore instead I want him to put the pipe under the ground and drain it straight out to the sewer so I don't have to deal with the motor problems anymore. He told me it would take up to 4 hours to do it but don't know if he has enough time to fix it right then. He. After he talked to his boss he told me ok I'll fix it, and it would cost $1675 to fix it. He went to Home Depot and came back to fix it within 10 minutes. All he did was take off the motor and get a pipe around 2 feet long to connect it to one end of the pipe that drains the water out to the sewer. Yes, it did do the job but did not have to break any ground like we agreed on before he got the supply. it only takes less than 30 minutes to get the material and install the pipe, and he still wanted to charge $1675 for it. I told him the job he did was not what me and him was agreed on, but he told me because he has an experience so he doesn't have to breaks the ground to submerge the pipe. I told him then it should not charge me $1675 for it. He then calls his boss and he boss told me that because of the time that he drove to my place and went and get the supply and time to drive back to his office the total time was around 2 hrs so he charged $770 for the work of 10 minutes. I did pay for it but I would never recommend this company because of their dishonesty. I should not be charged for the time of them driving to my place and drive back to their office read more

Called them out 6 or so months back came out to service air unit. When arrived checked out air said no problem paid for vist. Air still not cold. Called again came back out. Ended up paying 400 bucks plus the fee before to get air cold. Just major cleaning. Left the garden hose run for at least 8 plus hrs flooded neighbors yard. When called owner came out. And said next tune up on them so when the came out they wanted money to do service Just told them not interested. Bad bad service. Will call some one else next time read more

HIRE THIS COMPANY! I highly recommend this company. I requested a quote online on Wednesday. Juan came out that afternoon and gave me a bid for installing an A/C unit. They were able to find a unit that matched the brand of my furnace and qoted me a reasonable price, including a discount for using Yelp. Now here's the best part. He scheduled the electrical work for that Friday and the unit installation for the following Monday. All the other companies couldn't come close to matching Friars scheduling. He went through and explained the installation process, including picures. Juan then went through the service agreement and answered all my questions. I hired them on the spot and gave him a 10% deposit. Mind you I never hire anyone without getting a minimum of 3 bids, but this time I didn't. I'm so glad I didn't waste my time on other companies. Friday morning I receive a message from Juan saying he found a crew that could also do the installation that day. Woo hoo 3 days early. James showed up at 9:30 sharp and introduced me to his crew. I had a highly frustrating experience with them, multiple repairs over several days stemming from installation issues. I was at work during the installation and my partner witnessed the management rush their guys to finish the job. This is how they left our new thermostat. Wiring exposed and holes in the wall. My AirConditioning stopped blowing cold air right in the middle of the August heat wave. I called many heating and air companies but most were booked several weeks out. I was able to get a tech from Reliable Standard Heating (see their review by me) to come out and the technician told me I needed an entirely new outdoor condenser to the tune of $4,700! Of course, I got a second opinion with the repair cost that high. Friars was able to come out a few days later and found I only needed a new capacitor in the outdoor condenser and the total job was $238. Both Friars technicians wore a mask the entire repair even though it was all done outside my home and they were knowledgeable and friendly. My air conditioning has worked perfectly since their repair. I definitely recommend Friars and would use them again. read more

We had such a fantastic experience with the Friars team! We had just moved into a new house and would hear a strange noise every time the furnace turned on. We called a few companies to come check it out and got quotes for replacing both the furnace and condenser unit. Of all the companies, Friars was the only company to provide us with a variety of options at different price ranges and the only company that spent the time walking us through the differences between a heat pump vs what we had (gas furnace) and single stage vs two stage vs variable speed condenser units (which we knew very little about). We ended up moving forward with replacing our system with a heat pump. The installation team was extremely professional -- they laid out floor covers, did a fantastic job cleaning up, wore masks, and just overall were very friendly and approachable. They also ended up completing the job a day earlier than we had expected so that was also great! The only issue we encountered was that the installation team arrived an hour prior to the scheduled time on the first day. It didn't end up being a big deal but just wanted to provide the feedback to the company to ensure better communication between the schedulers and installers for future customers. read more

This is an update to a previous review. The AC at my San Diego rental home went out and my tenants were left with no AC during this heat wave. I called Friars since I had already dealt with them in the past and they were able to send a tech out in a few hours. They determined the "coil" was leaking. Rather then spend money fixing an old system. I had them replace the entire AC system for a very reasonable amount. They were able to do it Saturday afternoon and my tenants are happy now.
