With central London changing at a breathtaking space it is so refreshing to find Freud's is still Freud's. Somewhere between my last visit (ages ago) and now they expanded from the famous cellar bar to what used to be an interiors shop above. The main bar downstairs still looks just the same as I remembered it, and gets just as packed making a trip to the ladies quite a challenge. They only have a limited cocktail list upstairs but there's nothing they can't mix in the main bar. The mojito was a bit disappointing though. According to their website Freud has been around since 1986 and I hope it will still be here the next time I pass.

Popped into Freud on a Saturday night at around half six on a very sunny London day and the place was still full! It is very well hidden and has a real DIY feel to the whole place. The cocktails are what people come for, and they are pretty damn good. This isn't a place for 'refined' cocktails however, you won't see any fancy garnishes or slimy bartenders practicing their 'flair' - and it's all the better for it. Cocktails are very very very reasonable for Central London. £6 for a mojito - sign me up. On my visit I tried a Boris Tea - cherry vodka, lychee, grand marnier and some other stuff. It was bloody delicious and a steal at £6.50. As I left with the hubby in tow to go and see Priscilla at the theatre (I know - no stereotypes here) the effects started to hit. These are potent drinks so pace yourself. Unless of course you want to get smashed, and let's face it, it would be easy to do at Freud. What struck me most about this bar was the diversity of the clientele. Never have I seen metal rockers stand side by side with city types and some ladies who could easily have been my mum's age! But this democratic atmosphere is what makes the bar a little special. I would've given the place 5 stars but the loos let them down, as did the overall look and feel of the place. The art work on the walls is a little pants to be fair, and the whole place has a little bit of a gloomy gothic feel perhaps. Nevertheless, a great place to start your evening. Honest people, honest drinks and most importantly honest prices. Bang!

The most important thing to do when visiting FREVD is to make a mental note of how to find it again! I've been hunting around for it for weeks after my friend (who's now in Ecuador) first took me for the best Mojito I've had in Soho. I recently found it again and I'm hoping that will be the end of getting lost down the side streets of Soho because FREVD is just too good to loose! Once you come down the metal stairs at the side of the street, you'll find yourself in an intimate, narrow bar, with a relaxed yet cool atmosphere. It's completely devoid of any 'scene' and pretty much anything goes, but you do get the feeling that everyone feels like this is their little unknown, underground gem. The concrete walls, hung with their latest art exhibition, keep an under-the-streets vibe and the easy going crowd sit about on the stairs when all the tables have filled up. They have a good menu of beers and I think the cocktails are constantly good. They like to put a little twist on most, such as the Fallen Angel, a take on the better known White Russian, but made with Frangelico, kahlua, cacoa, baileys and milk. I always have an Espresso Martini (or 5) and although this isn't on the board I've never been told I can't have it and last time I went the bar man even asked if he could substitute the vodka for brandy to see if I liked it. The Mojito's are always a safe bet, with plenty of fresh mint and their choice of brown sugar. It's great on a Sunday evening when everywhere else is closed. It's perfect for having a good catch up with a friend as the mood is very chilled out (they were playing ambient reggae last Sunday) so you can totally relax whilst you knock back the cocktails.

Came here to have a drunk time in London and omg, thank you Yelp, you helped make my London trip fun and memorable! This place makes FANTASTIC cocktails and the prices are actually decent considering the locale. They have an impressive drink menu and the execution is spot-on: I wouldn't have believed that I was in the UK with the strawberry mojito I was drinking! I also enjoyed the Freud lemonade - my best friend loved the Cheeky Monkey. We couldn't stop drinking because there are so many cocktails to try. As Lizzie G noted, the bar staff is actually pretty cute. Mmm, another reason why this place scores some stars. I'd be hitting this joint up every week if I lived in London. Wish I could find a place exactly like this where I'm at!

Fun little basement bar with a cozy and slightly grungy atmosphere. Their gin cocktails are amazing! Some of the best I've had.

They helped us celebrate our anniversary with a glass of bubbles while we flipped through the book of drinks. Drinks are unlike anything I've seen on other menus with creative ingredients and presentations. We finally decided on the Bon Echo- which came in a beautiful glass that glowed blue from the base and held a small bird inside a clear globe. It was photo worthy and even better to drink. I also loved the Lucknow Cocktail- a brilliant combo of whisky, kombucha, lemon, vetiver and bergamot liqueur and champagne. It was the best champagne cocktail I can recall. Skyefall was a bit too smoky for me, but B enjoyed it. We also tried the rum-based Montego Boulevard which came with a small chocolate bowl filled with nuts. There's a small food menu with an OK edamame hummus tostada that was specked with daikon kimchi. I wish it had more of that yummy kimchi! My mind was blown by the sweet potato- a very thick slice coated in nuts and served with a green curry ice cream and spicy sambal. OMG- so many flavors and textures. Incredible. Definitely recommend this place.

As we descended the stairs we fell into an alternate universe where people were singing Ace of Base at the top of their lungs and dancing like "All That She Wants" was going to save us all. As if that wasn't awesome enough, the DJ followed it up with "The Sign" and the crowd roared. Talk about knowing your target audience! The bar was several people deep so ordering cocktails seemed pretty out of the question (not to mention rude) so the four of us drank Japanese beer instead. Too loud to converse with one another we had an amazing time watching everything going on around us: the super tall bloke with a popped collar polo shirt who had at least one arm in the air the entire time who knew the words to every song played, the folks attempting swing dancing in too small an area, the gigantic wall-size mirrors that made the place feel so much bigger than it was and several times confused us into thinking that the place had multiple rooms. The crowd consisted of folks ages twenty to fifty and had a large portion of young women who had, clearly, put in loads of effort for their big night out. More surprising to me, the older dudes in the striped shirts who appeared to have come into central London from a fairly far off exurb seemed just as at home here as the early twenties ladies in mini dresses and carefully applied makeup and super done hair. And me in my climate-appropriate outfit? I sensed the possibility of this place. I'll be back to sample the cocktails some weeknight soon.

In 9 out of 10 interactions, the staff were genuinely excellent--warm, attentive, and clearly trained in the fine art of making guests feel like royalty (as you'd expect at this price point). There are multiple restaurants and bars to choose from, a steady stream of live music drifting through the late afternoons into the evenings, and quite possibly the best cleaning and turn-down service I've ever encountered--truly next-level pillow fluffing. Now, my one gripe: the light--or lack thereof. Despite having three decently sized windows, they're covered in a mysterious film that blocks natural light more effectively than blackout curtains ever could. It gives the rooms (and oddly, the lobby too) a slightly subterranean vibe--perfect if you're a vampire, less ideal if you're someone who enjoys knowing whether it's day or night.

The space isn't a true speakeasy as there's a clear entrance you go to, vs finding the secret entrance and all that jazz. Aside from that, the vibe is moody and chill. Menus are in the books at the tables. They offer ala carte drinks or you can choose their 5 drink tasting menu which is popular. We all got the tasting menu, every person getting a different theme. Drinks are creative, whimsical, fun and playful. I'm not much of a drinker so I was concerned this would be a bit much for me, but this is about the experience, the drinks werent too big or overly boozy, or anything. The themes from the 39 euro tasting menu are: 1. Cocktail history. This is the most traditional drink direction 2. Naughty childhood. Drinks are candy and dessert based. Not necessarily overly sweet so don't worry about that. 3. Nature. 4. West meets east. Asian themed drinks. This was most creative and I wish I got this one. 5. Gourmet. French themed. This is the one that didn't get chosen from our group. 6. Get ready and go. London themed. All the drinks were super creative. There was so much thought around presentation put into them. And they update their drinks regularly. I'll definitely come back so I can try more of the other themes. Note. They have very very minimal snacks available so make sure you eat ahead of time.
