Freshmart is located in the basement of Japanese department store SOGO. It's one of the best high-end supermarkets in Hong Kong, but also a busy and pricey one. Even though it focuses on Japanese produce you can find an enormous variety of international foods there.
I've gone there shopping a few times, always for specific products - last time I was after Okinawa sweet potatoes which are, apparently, the best of their kind. After having been to a few supermarkets around my place with no success, the next obvious step was to go to SOGO. First thing you see when you arrive is the fruit and vegetable section and there isnt' a better way to welcome a customer in a food store than by bright, colorful and healthy products. And they are even beautiful, as Freshmart imports some really amazing looking fruits; from apples to huge watermelons. They sometimes have a counter where they offer customers some new items to try (last time it was mushrooms and they smelled so good!). Unfortunately I couldn't find the sweet potatoes, but they carry at least three kinds of those. Impressive!
Now that I was there I went to the meat counter to have a look at their cold cuts, ham in particular, as I had seen some Iberico and Serrano hams in similar stores. They did have some good brands and products - possibly not as good as in City'Super and Great, which are probably best at Western foods, but they definitely have some options.
Freshmart is not my usual supermarket: it's expensive and in my mind it's more like a 'specialty store' where I go to find this or that (Japanese, but other nationalities too) food. It's also worth checking the different cake counters if you have a sweet tooth, but note that on weekends and peak times it's a little crazy busy in there! read more
