REVIEWER # 2 Hong…read moreKong Farmers Markets have a great variety of vegetables and fruit! I am happy to say that I was able to witness that as I was here for my vacation. During my visit in Hong Kong I found this as I was going to Tai Cheong Bakery. The Farmers Market conveniently runs through a long street from Des Veoux Road and Graham Street and is located in the center of the walkway that connects the ferry pier and the footbridge that leads to Central. The market is small compared to other markets I have seen however the amount of veggies and fruit still makes this a place to not pass up! The vendors they are pretty nice and friendly. The variety of meat that they serve is absolutely amazing. I came on a Tuesday around noon and they still had a great selection of fruits vegetables and other things as well. They also have a market called Man Kee Shing Pork Chops that you can also buy live fresh fish and many different varieties of the meat as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sundays they are organized by KFBG from 11AM-5PM and Wednesdays they are organized by SEEDS from 12PM-6PM. I came on a Tuesday where they were opened from 11AM-5PM. If you are ever in the area on a Tuesday afternoon I definitely recommend this place for you to try. Contact Info: seed@seed.org.hk / info@kfbg.org REVIEW 197/196

Yeah, I do love a food market. It's the lively colorful picture that always gets me. And I can't…read morehelp but smiling even wider when it's a farmer, locally grown organic market. I knew the Farmers Market was going on when I walked past the Pier on my way to Lamma, and I knew I wasn't coming back on time to buy my veggies that day. I also knew I was coming back just to do exactly that the following Sunday morning. The market is a small one, where farmers offer their produce at large tables, placed in a square shaped area. The produce is seasonal so you'll find different veggies from time to time. Some of what they sell: leafy greens, okra, cucumber, beets, bitter gourd...Most of the farmers will expect you to ask them questions and it's a great place to learn about what you eat: there are no intermediaries so prices are fair, and affordable. The Wednesday one, which is a bit smaller than Sunday's, is organized by SEED, a foundation that promotes 'sustainable lifestyle' and has helped local farmers with the marketing of their produce. They even advertise and promote its farmers on their website so that you can get to know them beforehand. They would expect you to bring your own bag and it is also advisable to get there early, for fresher, greater variety. Do you have plans this weekend? I do...you'll find me at the Central Farmers Market on Sunday morning!

So interesting to visit the Wan Chai Market with Jacky from This Is Asia Tours…read more Wan Chai was established in the 1930s as a wet market, or a local market for fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and meat. Today, you can still choose from a wide variety of fresh fish or other seafood. That is fish that are alive in a small tank swimming and thrashing. You choose your fish, or other amphibian dinner choice, and they kill, skin and scale it for you to take home and cook. Can't get much fresher than that unless you caught it yourself. Apparently they used to have poultry as well in the past. Fears of avian flu have made that market offering virtually obsolete. The selection of baskets and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables was quite impressive. Rambutan. Longan. Durian. Cherries. Mangosteen. Water spinach. Choi sum. Grab some spices, too. There are also bakeries filled with egg tarts and pineapples buns (that don't have pineapple) and a shop that sells snake soup that does have snake. Did not sample that one. Shop like a local at the Wan Chai Wet Market.

Some fruit vendors only sell by the case, but shop around and you'll find everything & some. Tons…read moreof fresh fruit and veggies. Japanese grapes and Australian mangos are ginormous. Definitely recommend if you're not grossed out by the smell of raw meat. Some vendors speak English or they're type it into the calculator for you to see.

Most people don't take much notice of the IKEA bistro at IKEA because there's a full cafe there…read more But the bistro is actually slightly cheaper, and sells some snacks that you can't get at the cafe like popcorn, ice cream cones and hotdogs. IKEA is a maze, but the bistro is actually not hard to get to. Simply take the lift from the ground floor of Homesquare at the side of Franc Franc - the lift only goes up to the sixth floor. Get out there and you'll be at the exit of IKEA, right where the bistro is. You'll recognize it by the line of people queuing up! The bistro is, well, just kind of a food stand, so the variety of food is definitely less than at the cafe. IKEA favorites like the smoked salmon and the potato vegetable cake aren't available here, but there are a range of snacks instead. You can get cinnamon buns, cream puffs and others that you can't get at the cafe. No worries - the signature meatballs are here too, at five meatballs for $9! That's cheaper than at the cafe, where five costs $10 and ten costs $19. Coffee and soft drinks are cheaper here and also come with free refills too! My mother and I were leaving IKEA today and were attracted by one of their monthly specials - shrimp toasts. At 3 for $10, they were pretty cheap so we joined the line and got them. Unfortunately, they were disappointing - barely warm, and the shrimp wasn't even fully cooked. We didn't finish it and just tossed it because we didn't want to risk eating uncooked shrimp. Overall, some snacks at the bistro and a couple rounds of refillable drinks is a great treat after some hardcore IKEA shopping. Just don't get the shrimp toasts and all will be well!

I dunno ever since when people will associate IKEA with meatballs besides furniture; it is…read morenonetheless true that the furniture of IKEA is only the second best thing in this Swedish furniture chain. From my very biased point of view, as I don't really buy things to furnish my room nor my house, the food is the best part of the shop; I will skip all the other sections and go straight to the restaurant without batting an eye on the furniture. To be frank, in a scale of 10 the food of IKEA (item dependent) normally would not exceed a 7, that is to say the food there is not exceptionally good; however, you must also take in the price factor into consideration in order to make a fair comparison. Say for example the meatballs that people are all crazy about; it is true that the gravy is kinda good and flavorful, the meatballs are not dry at all but they are certainly not the "finger licking good" type of grub (well...nor is the chain that uses this slogan...i'm just saying). Now how bout I tell you they cost less than $20 for 10 pcs of them? Given the fact that they are made by real, good quality meat makes it almost unbelievably economical. Imagine a world that $30 is no longer sufficient for a lunchbox while the quality is of question, the food court in IKEA is a dream come true not only for cheapskates but also those who are tired of traditional lunchboxes. Other than the meatballs, there are a lot more for IKEA to offer; in this IKEA restaurant, which is also in the largest IKEA store in Hong Kong, you can have a proper, full blown dinner no matter solitarily or with a group of friends. For starter, they have smoked salmon or shrimp cocktail; for soup we have lobster bisque or other soups of the day. Main course varies from fish to roast beef and there are plenty to choose from for dessert as well. Basically it is quite a hardy 4 course meal but the price is FARRRRRR lower than those in a restaurants, including the ones in Hong Kong style western diners. So how would you not love this place with good food and good price; if I live close enough to Shatin, i wouldn't mind eat here like 5 days a week at all~
