As I started getting serious with my pour over experiments, I needed a good grinder, and I ended up at Fresh Ground Roasting's website for the best prosumer grinder: Baratza Virtuoso+. FGR curates an excellent selection of coffee gear, coffee's and provides free shipping. I was especially impressed by Eric, his responsiveness to my questions, and his knowledge of brewing different methods of coffee. While Baratza was delayed in shipping my order, Eric kept me informed and expedited the order with a Baratza rep. He even took some time to explain brewing techniques and recommended a scale that saved me $$, even though they did not stock it themselves. On receiving the order, there was a minor defect in a silicon gasket, and Eric immediately ordered a free replacement with Baratza. Despite living in San Francisco, I will recommend FGR for their great selection of artisan coffees and brew gear, excellent customer service that goes beyond lip service. I was curious to check out a shop that roasts the beans. I discovered that they are in the complex next to Playhouse 38. The owner and his assistant were extremely helpful. I use a Keurig coffee maker, and he ground the coffee for the ecobrewer I use to brew something other than k cups. I am looking forward to trying the dark Ethiopian roast I purchased. read more

I like the concept of fair trade but not sure I will return. I was the only person there and felt like I was an inconvenience. They do have a convenient pay and pickup in their lobby- I saw it there-tho there was not a lot of information about how it works, hours, etc and the clerk seemed disinclined to discuss it. I'd give six stars. I went here today with my friend on his birthday. I rolled in at about 11:10 and Eric introduced himself to us, and told us the coffee would be ready in about 15 minutes, but we would be welcome to stay and watch the roast. He explained every single stinkin' facet of how to roast coffee with enthusiasm, a big smile and a genuine love of coffee. His product is outstanding. I'm using a cheap-o drip machine from Walmart and it is singularly the best cup of coffee I've ever had. Ever. Like, Ever. The roast is perfect, it brings out the nutty, floral and vibrant notes of the coffee in a way that no store-bought bag will ever achieve. I have to just say the best part was how great the service was. We learned how coffee is made, we learned how to brew it effectively, we had every possible question answered by a man who CLEARLY loves coffee. My friend joked on the way home that Eric probably gets up before his alarm clock in the morning because he loves what he does so much. I don't think that's going to be very far from the truth. My husband is the coffee drinker in the family, grinding beans fresh every morning. OK, coffee snob is a more apt description. =) Once he tasted dark/bold coffee from these beans, it's now his first choice for resupplying his caffeine choices! Only hesitance is that the biggest packaging is one pound. He previously bought beans other places in larger quantities and froze them. So it's more trips - and more packaging. But maybe it's just as well, given that the beans are that much fresher. read more

Came here today to pick up a pound of coffee and ended up leaving with a sample cup of coffee and two different types of coffee! Eric was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and took the time to explain the differences between each roast/bean he had and helped pick out what was the flavor profile I was looking for and even gave me a sample taste of one of my choices. Their cold brew coffee is delicious. I had it a few times while at eating/picking up food from Sugar Path, but recently purchased a bottle while stopping by the store to enjoy at home as well. The store is off the beaten path and initially a little difficult to find, but once there my experience was pleasant. They were very willing to chat about their coffee with me and offer advice while picking out coffee as gifts for a bit few relatives. And I've had nothing but rave reviews from my family about the coffee, especially my difficult-to-please grandma. The coffee is a little more expensive, but if you can spare a few extra bucks, definitely worth a try! read more

Highly recommend FreshGround. The coffee is extremely fresh and there are multiple roast and bean options. We stumbled upon Fresh Ground when we took a brewing class here with family. The owners are quite knowledgeable and extremely friendly. Beyond that, they love to educate others about their product. Everything is ethically sourced, but not overpriced which might cause some to shy away. We picked up some cold brew the last time we visited and we're excited to give that a shot. The owners were very personable and made me a juicy pour over of a honey processed El Salvador. Their primary focus is roasting, but they were happy to make me a drink and chat for a bit. You can see their roasting set up and geek out with them about the coffee. This is a definite stop for the coffee geek passing through Geneva. read more

I really like the bean and roast options here. I had a cup of breakfast blend at Courageous Cafe and I was sold! This is a great blend with lots of flavor and no discernible acid. At this point we have tried almost all of their coffee and have been very pleased. The single origins are great and it feels good to be able to track the sourcing and trade practices . Give FreshGround a chance you won't be disappointed. Disclosure; I worked in an espresso cafe back in 1974 and we took " coffee classes" . We also sold retail beans by the pound. So I won't buy coffee just anywhere especially if it is sold on every street corner or needs syrups or spices to make it taste good. Just honest coffee will do. read more
