As of today, February 19, 2023, the 2nd relaunch of the Fresh Direct website appears to be a catastrophic failure. They've mistakenly dropped the previous link to New Products, a significant revenue source for Fresh Direct; they've mistakenly eliminated the functionality that allows you to see the estimated delivery time within your regular, reserved time slot, and the link to return to the old version of the site (who wouldn't want to after all these oversights and epic fails) is broken and non-functional. The entire senior leadership team should hang their heads in shame. read more

It's 7/20 at 11:31 am. My order was to be delivered between 8 and 10. Pause. I called was on hold for 30 minutes. They finally called me back. They informed me my order wasn't on the truck. So nobody contacted me. Nothing, I had to track down this info. They suck. I wasted 3 1/2 hours of a beautiful Friday on this BS. They have consistently been delivering subpar service. They throw the food in the box and whatever "happens, happens"...spills - damaged containers. The customer service ? Dumber than dumb and deliberate about it. And they scam the delivery window. Driver scans the box within the delivery window and then delivers it "whenever" - consistently 1/2 he late. You complain and they tell you the box was "scanned". We are a new user to Fresh Direct (FD). The first 2 orders had incredible fruits and vegetables and thought we would be users for a lifetime. The third order was satisfactory, and our recent order was truly a disappointment. It was so lacking in quality that I closed our FD account- didn't even want the store credit. Went shopping today to make up for yesterday's order. Unfortunately for us, it is a time game- it is not even about the money as it is about the time. First - the delivery was late I got a recorded message saying it would be 15 minutes late. When twenty minutes past the delivery time had passed I called the number provided, and was put on a pretty long hold. I listened to very cheerful music and messages about how important I was spoken by angels. Then the rep came on and said she would try to contact transport. So I listened to some more cheerful music. She came back and said they were unable to reach the driver but I was next up on his schedule. The rep's info was almost acceptable, but her tone was inappropriately cheerful and happy, almost like a cartoon character. I waited further, checking the order status on line and looking at our driveway from time to time. After about 40 minutes my husband went outside and found the order had been left without telling us. The FIRST instructions for delivery was they should call me to come take the order. He never did. About 1/2 hour later, the status on the website is the same - in transit, delayed. Absolute incompetence. Their new system is egregiously flawed. Inputting information for payment is next to impossible. When you call customer service, they instruct you to "call your bank" as it could in NO WAY be their fault. They have individuals who are designated to call you on a "secure" line as most of their employees are now remote to take your information...that NEVER happens within the given time perimeter. They will then call you hours later admitting ignorance to your plight and guarantee a call form a "supervisor". That individual will call, boasting managerial clout but in reality can do ZERO to rectify the situation. Our organization worked with their "corporate" department and apparently because we are a not for profit and we had an albeit frugal order ($400+), they decided our business wasn't worth it. We will NEVER work with them again. Furthermore, although we are a small business, we have some significant social media presence. I have been using their service since 2007 so I write this review with hesitation. I have had delivery issues. Three out of the four times, it arrived really late. One instance they said delivered and I had not received my order. They had to schedule the delivery for the next day. Today I selected the 7-9a time slot. I received a text just before 9am that they will be two hours late. It has now passed that window and I am looking at 4 hours late. I understand that most people are still at home due to COVID but a 6 hour wait window is definitely unacceptable. I will be seeking alternative options for grocery delivery. 1- when using my location as Brooklyn, FreshDirect wasn't an option for review. I switched to NY, NY and it was. FD is everywhere, that's their point, so that is some shenanigans. 2- their selection is not very modern, at no time in my shopping history has it been contemporary. They are way behind the ball with actual market selections found in even the healthy type bodegas I saw in Park Slope for the 15 years I've used FD. That's troubling to me. Don't force your brand, just look around and see what people want. It's not rocket science. 3- their offshoot Food Kick seems to reflect reality more selection wise, but many of the items are greyed out meaning "currently unavailable." Good example is Kite Hill Ricotta- yeah that's hot! And hard to find. Try stocking it? And the division of selection and delivery window size between FK & FD makes FD seem like a coal powered dinosaur. I'm not sure that they want to catch that rap, but it's hitting. 4- bless them, they moved to totes. The totes are great. For the love of all that is good and holy, return them- and FD: you better come out about the totes' lifecycle. Took you way too long to get here. Don't fugg it up! 5- I'm here today driven by their having discontinued my LTR: Fair Trade Organic French Roast Sumatra- ground by choice. They took it out of my cart and I had only one pot left to make and say goodbye. At least we had that time together to say goodbye. I subbed in their newly branded and oddly less recyclable packaged Organic Sumatra and just had the first & last cup of yuck. It tastes like airport or bodega coffee. I will never drink that again. Sometimes I'm driven here to write a bad review, but not often. And this system lumps all of FreshDirect products together with their site & delivery service. They each deserve their own review categories. FD did once try a review system on their site, but it's not on their app which is all I use to shop now. I'd seen Fresh Direct trucks around my neighborhood so figured it might be a good option for groceries. I looked and found their prices were somewhat cheaper than the area around me. Great! I placed a big order ($300+) since my fridge and pantry were mostly empty (we just moved), and my family has some special dietary needs. It includes what we're having for dinner tonight. I paid for express delivery, got a confirmation email, then an hour later got an email saying my delivery was being prepared. Over three hours after the scheduled delivery time, I try to log in and check, and it says my password is wrong, even though I'm doubly sure it's the correct one (saved in my navigator and I just set it yesterday, so I remember it clearly). I try to reset it anyway, and it freezes on the reset page. I call customer service to ask about my login info and find out when my order is coming. They informed me that surprise! My order was actually canceled, because the large amount triggered a red flag in their system. I received no email about the cancellation. Now I have to run to the grocery store to grab ingredients for dinner at the last minute, and gradually fill my fridge and pantry otherwise (I have no car so it will take multiple trips). I wouldn't mind if I'd just received some communication about the cancellation so I could plan my meals and grocery shopping otherwise. As it stands, I only received notifications that my order was being prepared. I am not interested in placing another order with them if I can't even know whether my order went through or not. The delivery guy left my package on the sidewalk and did not ring the doorbell nor called my phone. He took a picture of the package on the sidewalk as a proof of delivery. Seriously? Ofcourse someone else will take it. You call this a business? The most critical part of your business is to hand the package to the customer. I LOVE Fresh Direct, and I loved them before COVID. They always have 99.9% of exactly what you ordered. I'm pretty picky about quality of fruits & veggies and they consistently have fantastic produce & meats. I recently decided to use Instacart to place an order with Wegman's, and it was a bit disappointing. The produce was meh, the kale was limp and went directly into the trash. 4 items were missing - which really screwed up my meal plans, and 1 was replaced with an approved replacement. FD just always has everything their website shows so you don't have the manage exceptions or approving replacements. I also price checked every item and FD had better pricing on more items (InstaCart does add a markup to store prices). I wish FD had a few more selections on some things but hands down, they are the best quality groceries around - even against Whole Foods (I feel WF quality has went downhill tremendously - recent fish & meat purchases were unacceptable). Delivery from any store in general is more expensive, but if you're looking for consistent delivery service & good quality - Fresh Direct is the best! If there ever is a problem, they are super responsive & helpful. Over the last 9 years, I've maybe had to contact them 3x for issues. For the other review noting FD doesn't have same day, they DO HAVE SAME DAY for most items. You just have to select the toggle at the top left for Express Delivery. If you have a Delivery Pass membership with FD, you get same day deliveries for free as well. read more

My biggest complaint is that the delivery people don't wear masks or gloves. I'm in NJ which has been hit hard by the virus, they should really be required to at least put on fresh gloves when handling the orders. Other than that it's really good to not have to go to the grocery store and I definitely appreciate it for that. Based on my experience for the past month or so I wouldn't use them if there wasn't a pandemic, but it's very good to have it available for this emergency. For the food itself it's hit or miss. A lot of the frozen stuff appears to have been out of the freezer for a while when it comes (ice cream melted, food defrosting, etc.). Most of the fruit and vegetables go bad very quickly, within a day or two of delivery, and some things have arrived inedible (a bag of potatoes arrived completely green, tomato arrived moldy, etc.) or not in great shape (smashes cookies, very bruised fruit, smashed boxes of things, etc.). I'm happy to have the service and I know they're at high capacity so might be lesser quality control than usual, so I'm letting the issues go. read more

Packaged raw meats are not properly separated from other items and arrive at unsafe temperatures. Anything above 50F is a red flag. On the last order, the meat had apparently leaked, and since it wasn't separated from the other bags, the entire order is contaminated. This is a basic lack of food safety. Orders frequently are missing items. This has been a problem for years. Customer service is awful. read more

I made the huge mistake of using this service a few years ago and the much bigger mistake of giving them my credit card information. After years of not using their service, I see a $300 charge to my credit card, and subsequently received an email with a huge order that I did not make. Then I get emails saying that the changes to my email and delivery address made! I called and they immediately canceled my order and removed the charge but refused to tell me the email address and delivery addressed that was changed on MY ACCOUNT! This was obviously an inside job and they are protecting the employee committing these crimes. 10 minutes after my call with this company, another charge for $532 was made to my credit card. My bad rating for FreshDirect results from 2 major faults, which they refuse to rectify. 1. They refuse to remove scales from salmon. All reputable seafood markets clean and de-scale salmon before selling whole or portioning. Not FD. They claim it harms the flesh - rubbish! Ask Citarella, Eataly, Lobster Place - they disagree. 2. FD refuses to allow consumers to have any contact with department management to provide feedback. Instead, they set up a Canadian call center . They're nice people but ineffectual when serious complaints require management's involvement. read more

I'd select zero stars if possible. We ordered holiday dinner for 8 to 10 and the box did not arrive as scheduled. We contacted Fresh Direct and were told it was delayed but still coming. We tried again 24 hours later and were told the box was damaged and would not be arriving at all. Fresh Direct made no effort to contact us about this issue or to send a replacement, and we had to scramble to find alternative food at the last minute. When I complained about the treatment, the best they would do (after shuffling me among several people, multiple calls and waiting on hold multiple times) was a refund and $30 credit for a service that I will not use again. read more

I've been using Fresh Direct for a little over a year. While, generally, the food is great, the delivery people are nice, and the customer service people on the phone are extremely pleasant and kind, the website is CONSTANTLY down. Every other week, the website does not work with order updates. Meaning, the website provides zero updates on your order. The ETA constantly changes, with ZERO updates on the websites or email to inform the customer about this. Which means, I have to call their customer service 5-10 times throughout the day to get an updated ETA, because the ETA keeps changing without informing the customer. Remember this is an online delivery service, where we pay a 6 dollar delivery fee and half the time.....the online part is completely down without any explanation of why. And after a year, nothing is being done to fix this. Imagine ordering from Amazon whole foods, and half the time, the amazon website not providing any updates on your order status. And each time the customer service people, while incredibly kind, seem to be completely befuddled when I share with them that the website is completely unavailable for any updates...as if they have never heard this before. This has been going on 50 percent of the time since I signed up last November. How can the customer service people and Fresh Direct be completely unaware of this issue? For context, today my delivery window was 2-4 pm. With no website updates, I call customer service and they tell me the updated ETA is 2:43. Ok, It's now 2:52, nothing comes. I call again. They tell me the updated delivery is now 3:34. Mind you, still no email or website updates. I had to call to find out. It's now 3:34 and nothing. I call again.....They tell me 4:19 is the latest update. Already past my original 2-4 window with no email or website updates. 4:20 comes, and now they tell me it might not arrive until possibly after 6. I call back and cancel my order. Ridiculous. This has been happening for a year with this company constantly. Number one, constantly changing ETA's pushing it hours outside of the original window and zero website or email updates informing the customer. It's a problem folks. Something is not right there. I gave it three stars though because the food itself is always good and the customer service is always friendly and they are great with credits. But, I don't think I will be ordering again with them after waiting an entire day with my ETA constantly being pushed off 2-4 hours after it was supposed to be delivered.....into the evening with no customer updates. I live on a 6 floor walk-up and it's very difficult for me to carry bags up to my apartment. I started a FreshDirect subscription so that someone else could do this for me. I tip well, in advance. They keep leaving the bags in the lobby. I might as well go shopping myself and save the extra money for delivery and tip. Be careful, and look at your expiration dates. My last two orders, I ordered Canada Dry ginger ale. The expiration dates were 05/25/21, over a year ago. They gave me a credit both times, and said they would send this issue to whoever????, They don't solve the problem, They just credit you. And meanwhile I am paying for delivery and I also tip. While I love the quality ... I'm saddened by the actual delivery part. On multiple occasions my order will say delivered but will not be here. When I call customer service I'm told they can deliver tomorrow... but never offered any sort of explanation or credit ... unless I bitterly complain and then I'm offered typically 9.99 (on an order of 150-300$) complain harder it goes up to 20.... Well I've been using FreshDirect for almost two years now. hmm one word or the first word to describe them is, mediocre. FreshDirect is NOT that good but better then going out in the cold or rain. It's such a drag dealing with queueing up, waiting in line at the grocery store, then having to lug grocery bags around. Produce green groceries like fruit and veggies are not ripe yet or rotten, rubbish basically. The one redeeming quality is their customer service! Agree with a lot of the reviews here that this company just doesn't have delivery down. I used them consistently for years around 2018-2021 and was happy. But I stopped using them when they started to break things (I actually cut myself unloading a broken wine bottle), show up late and often miss packing items. I just tried using them again because they had a free delivery coupon and I thought I'd give it another go. I had an experience where I probably won't ever use them again. I did have to change my delivery windows, and they were very accommodating. However, they ended up coming at a different time than agreed to, when I wasn't home. No one told me they weren't going to make it at the arranged time, so I sat for hours waiting for them. When I called to find out what was happening, they told me they couldn't make it and that they would have to come tomorrow. I told them that wouldn't work and they agreed to cancel the order--but may charge me a restocking fee! The insult of charging me for their lack of being able to get logistics down is inexcusable in my book. Net net: The food quality is good, but their inability to get delivery down is a big problem. read more

I started using FD the year after they started operating in NYC! Lately, the quality has been miserable! They pack boxed cereal, crackers, etc. with refrigerated/frozen goods so when you receive the order, you have soggy boxes of food! Today, I received an order that included cole slaw. The container for the slaw was broken and all the juice spilled out on everything! Anyone for mustard/vinegar blueberries...disgusting! Everything else was wet and will smell like vinegar for a while. Broken eggs have become the norm, although today there weren't any broken in my order. I'm ordering from them less and less now. It made it here three days late and spoiled because I surmise the idiot driver delivered to the wrong address on Rosh Hashanah and I'll assume the residence of the wrong address were busy observing Rosh Hashanah and didn't attend to the misplaced package of raw fish on their door step until after their observance....ergo the residence of wrong address dropped off the package of spoiled fish to the correct address two over nights later. FRESHDIRECT needs to test all wanna-be driver's reading and navigation/map skills before hiring. And maybe be sure that they have at least a high school level education. Fresh Direct has behaved completely fraudulently with regards to its Delivery Pass service and has charged me without my authorization. To make matters worse, the amount of the charge is equivalent to half a day's pay, and when I disputed the charge with my credit card company Fresh Direct responded by saying that I never attempted to cancel this service - when the truth is that I never signed up for it in the fi rst place. I have now "cancelled" this service and have also let Amex know that they should put a block on Fresh Direct ever charging my credit card again. However, I demand a refund of the $80+ that they charged me. It is criminal that they are defrauding "customers" in the middle of a pandemic. read more

Last night, someone hacked into my Fresh Direct account, which I have had for ~20 years, and placed 3 orders in excess of $1,000 to be delivered to Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I do not live in Crown Heights or know anyone who does. This person also changed the email ID, meaning that I could not log into my account. So, I immediately contacted Fresh Direct after receiving an automated email from them, informing me of the email ID change. I have spent hours between last night and this morning trying to resolve this. The most upsetting detail is that my actual non-fraudulent addresses were flagged as fraudulent, despite my confirmation multiple times last night that they were indeed NOT FRAUDULENT (as evidenced by my many many many undisputed orders). Of course none of the several reps I spoke with last night explained that my non-fraudulent addresses were being blocked. I only found out this morning while trying to place an order. What an unwelcome surprise. To make a long rambling story relatively short, I was instructed by a rep to create a brand new account last night. So I did, but the rep failed to inform me that my legit addresses were also blocked as they are "under review for fraud." The amount of time I've spent trying to resolve this is ridiculous. Why would my legit addresses be under investigation? Over the last ~20 years, FD has made tens of thousands of dollars from my orders. And now I'm blocked from using perfectly non-fraudulent addresses because some degenerate loser hacked into my account and specifically sent orders to Crown Heights. It upsets me to say that I cannot use Fresh Direct again. Their reps have handled this situation so poorly. My breaking point was the fact that my elderly parents are now being denied food to their completely legit address, while an "investigation for fraud" of unknown duration is conducted. Having no idea how long this will take is completely unacceptable. Fresh Direct can't give me any information as to how long this FBI-level investigation will take place, so I instructed a rep to cancel my account completely, and refund my unused product credits and Delivery Pass. My tenure with Fresh Direct is now over. Could have been avoided if this issue was handled properly. Fresh Direct should inform customers that their addresses are under review for fraud. This ordeal was such a complete waste of my time and energy. Fresh Direct needs to better secure customers' private information (e.g., passwords and credit card information). Surely I am not the first and only victim of degenerate losers delivering cases of alcohol (and god knows what else) at the expense of honest customers. read more

UPDATE: 2 months later with FreshDirect and I love it even more! Wish I had used it years ago. Most of my groceries came from either Walmart, or Amazon Fresh. The produce never lasted and most of the selection was plain junk, bad for one's health. Food from Fresh Direct lasts longer and it's easier to find healthy foods with this service. I'm relatively new to Fresh Direct, but so far, I enjoy the food quality, the delivery service and their etiquette, and above all, their tight-knit customer service. My only issue, which is why I didn't give it Five Stars, the food is rather pricey for my retirement income, but then again, we are dealing with quality. In terms of delivery, these drivers work hard carrying heavy groceries to people's doors. We should be tipping them at least $1.00 per bag. When I clicked on the asteris for "about estimated prices" it went to a BLANK FAQ page. This is very deceptive. I think they're trying to make up for lost profits from everyone switching to Amazon Fresh (which now has no monthly fee -- there is a waiting list). Customer service was rude about this. FreshDirect wouldn't let me use my credit card, claiming that the number was "invalid". I've used the card on dozens of other websites without any issues, so this is 100% on their side. They don't have a "refund" option (instead of substituting). They always substitute a different item if the one you ordered isn't available. Instacart has an option for refunding. Meat is about twice as expensive as it is in a regular supermarket. read more
