I'd seen Fresh Direct trucks around my neighborhood so figured it might be a good option for groceries. I looked and found their prices were somewhat cheaper than the area around me. Great! I placed a big order ($300+) since my fridge and pantry were mostly empty (we just moved), and my family has some special dietary needs. It includes what we're having for dinner tonight. I paid for express delivery, got a confirmation email, then an hour later got an email saying my delivery was being prepared. Over three hours after the scheduled delivery time, I try to log in and check, and it says my password is wrong, even though I'm doubly sure it's the correct one (saved in my navigator and I just set it yesterday, so I remember it clearly). I try to reset it anyway, and it freezes on the reset page. I call customer service to ask about my login info and find out when my order is coming. They informed me that surprise! My order was actually canceled, because the large amount triggered a red flag in their system. I received no email about the cancellation. Now I have to run to the grocery store to grab ingredients for dinner at the last minute, and gradually fill my fridge and pantry otherwise (I have no car so it will take multiple trips). I wouldn't mind if I'd just received some communication about the cancellation so I could plan my meals and grocery shopping otherwise. As it stands, I only received notifications that my order was being prepared. I am not interested in placing another order with them if I can't even know whether my order went through or not. I live on a 6 floor walk-up and it's very difficult for me to carry bags up to my apartment. I started a FreshDirect subscription so that someone else could do this for me. I tip well, in advance. They keep leaving the bags in the lobby. I might as well go shopping myself and save the extra money for delivery and tip. My bad rating for FreshDirect results from 2 major faults, which they refuse to rectify. 1. They refuse to remove scales from salmon. All reputable seafood markets clean and de-scale salmon before selling whole or portioning. Not FD. They claim it harms the flesh - rubbish! Ask Citarella, Eataly, Lobster Place - they disagree. 2. FD refuses to allow consumers to have any contact with department management to provide feedback. Instead, they set up a Canadian call center . While I love the quality ... I'm saddened by the actual delivery part. On multiple occasions my order will say delivered but will not be here. When I call customer service I'm told they can deliver tomorrow... but never offered any sort of explanation or credit ... unless I bitterly complain and then I'm offered typically 9.99 (on an order of 150-300$) complain harder it goes up to 20.... Be careful, and look at your expiration dates. My last two orders, I ordered Canada Dry ginger ale. The expiration dates were 05/25/21, over a year ago. They gave me a credit both times, and said they would send this issue to whoever????, They don't solve the problem, They just credit you. And meanwhile I am paying for delivery and I also tip. Well I've been using FreshDirect for almost two years now. hmm one word or the first word to describe them is, mediocre. FreshDirect is NOT that good but better then going out in the cold or rain. It's such a drag dealing with queueing up, waiting in line at the grocery store, then having to lug grocery bags around. Produce green groceries like fruit and veggies are not ripe yet or rotten, rubbish basically. The one redeeming quality is their customer service! Agree with a lot of the reviews here that this company just doesn't have delivery down. I used them consistently for years around 2018-2021 and was happy. But I stopped using them when they started to break things (I actually cut myself unloading a broken wine bottle), show up late and often miss packing items. I just tried using them again because they had a free delivery coupon and I thought I'd give it another go. I had an experience where I probably won't ever use them again. I did have to change my delivery windows, and they were very accommodating. However, they ended up coming at a different time than agreed to, when I wasn't home. No one told me they weren't going to make it at the arranged time, so I sat for hours waiting for them. When I called to find out what was happening, they told me they couldn't make it and that they would have to come tomorrow. I told them that wouldn't work and they agreed to cancel the order--but may charge me a restocking fee! The insult of charging me for their lack of being able to get logistics down is inexcusable in my book. I started using FD the year after they started operating in NYC! Lately, the quality has been miserable! They pack boxed cereal, crackers, etc. with refrigerated/frozen goods so when you receive the order, you have soggy boxes of food! Today, I received an order that included cole slaw. The container for the slaw was broken and all the juice spilled out on everything! Anyone for mustard/vinegar blueberries...disgusting! Everything else was wet and will smell like vinegar for a while. Broken eggs have become the norm, although today there weren't any broken in my order. I'm ordering from them less and less now. Packaged raw meats are not properly separated from other items and arrive at unsafe temperatures. Anything above 50F is a red flag. On the last order, the meat had apparently leaked, and since it wasn't separated from the other bags, the entire order is contaminated. This is a basic lack of food safety. I've been using Fresh Direct for a little over a year. While, generally, the food is great, the delivery people are nice, and the customer service people on the phone are extremely pleasant and kind, the website is CONSTANTLY down. Every other week, the website does not work with order updates. Meaning, the website provides zero updates on your order. The ETA constantly changes, with ZERO updates on the websites or email to inform the customer about this. Which means, I have to call their customer service 5-10 times throughout the day to get an updated ETA, because the ETA keeps changing without informing the customer. Remember this is an online delivery service, where we pay a 6 dollar delivery fee and half the time.....the online part is completely down without any explanation of why. And after a year, nothing is being done to fix this. Imagine ordering from Amazon whole foods, and half the time, the amazon website not providing any updates on your order status. And each time the customer service people, while incredibly kind, seem to be completely befuddled when I share with them that the website is completely unavailable for any updates...as if they have never heard this before. This has been going on 50 percent of the time since I signed up last November. How can the customer service people and Fresh Direct be completely unaware of this issue? For context, today my delivery window was 2-4 pm. With no website updates, I call customer service and they tell me the updated ETA is 2:43. Ok, It's now 2:52, nothing comes. I call again. They tell me the updated delivery is now 3:34. Mind you, still no email or website updates. I had to call to find out. It's now 3:34 and nothing. I call again.....They tell me 4:19 is the latest update. Already past my original 2-4 window with no email or website updates. 4:20 comes, and now they tell me it might not arrive until possibly after 6. I call back and cancel my order. Ridiculous. This has been happening for a year with this company constantly. Number one, constantly changing ETA's pushing it hours outside of the original window and zero website or email updates informing the customer. It's a problem folks. Something is not right there. I gave it three stars though because the food itself is always good and the customer service is always friendly and they are great with credits. But, I don't think I will be ordering again with them after waiting an entire day with my ETA constantly being pushed off 2-4 hours after it was supposed to be delivered.....into the evening with no customer updates. Fresh Direct has behaved completely fraudulently with regards to its Delivery Pass service and has charged me without my authorization. To make matters worse, the amount of the charge is equivalent to half a day's pay, and when I disputed the charge with my credit card company Fresh Direct responded by saying that I never attempted to cancel this service - when the truth is that I never signed up for it in the fi rst place. I have now "cancelled" this service and have also let Amex know that they should put a block on Fresh Direct ever charging my credit card again. I'm relatively new to Fresh Direct, but so far, I enjoy the food quality, the delivery service and their etiquette, and above all, their tight-knit customer service. My only issue, which is why I didn't give it Five Stars, the food is rather pricey for my retirement income, but then again, we are dealing with quality. In terms of delivery, these drivers work hard carrying heavy groceries to people's doors. We should be tipping them at least $1.00 per bag. They don't have a "refund" option (instead of substituting). They always substitute a different item if the one you ordered isn't available. Instacart has an option for refunding. Got a promo flyer in the mail for $50 off my first order. I made my order and shared the flyer with a few friends who also ordered. I called at the beginning of my delivery window to confirm my delivery. I waited at home for my delivery, my delivery window was almost gone so I got curious about the status of my delivery. I tried logging in to check my account but couldn't. I called and customer service said they deactivate my account because of an issue with my payment method. To rectify the issue, I needed to call my credit card company, have the credit card company call Freshdirect on 3-way with me to verify my payment. At this point, my payment already posted on my credit card. I called my credit card company and they confirmed that the payment posted. Then Freshdirect reactivated my account and told the delivery person to complete the delivery. I was supposed to receive my delivery between 5 - 7pm but did not receive it until 9pm. I mentioned above that I shared the promo flyer with a few friends, one of whom is a neighbor. My neighbor had a similar issue with Freshdirect cancelling their offer and deactivating their about without notice. They had to put their bank in contact with Freshdirect to verify payment. Similar to my experience, the bank already authorized payment. But out of concern that the order is may be fraudulent, Freshdirect required additional verification with the bank. After verifying the payment with the bank, my neighbor expressed concerns that Freshdirect was being discriminant by flagging orders in our zip code as potential fraud. The supervisor handling the issue disclosed that there is a software that automatically identifies orders as potentially fraudulent, but insisted that zip code is not a factor in the software logic. However, two other people who I shared with flyer with made similar orders (because we do dinner parties) and they received their orders with no issues. Considering my experience and my neighbor's experience, it begs the question: is Freshdirect discriminating against certain neighborhoods by flagging certain orders as potentially fraudulent? read more

Last night, someone hacked into my Fresh Direct account, which I have had for ~20 years, and placed 3 orders in excess of $1,000 to be delivered to Crown Heights, Brooklyn. I do not live in Crown Heights or know anyone who does. This person also changed the email ID, meaning that I could not log into my account. So, I immediately contacted Fresh Direct after receiving an automated email from them, informing me of the email ID change. I have spent hours between last night and this morning trying to resolve this. The most upsetting detail is that my actual non-fraudulent addresses were flagged as fraudulent, despite my confirmation multiple times last night that they were indeed NOT FRAUDULENT (as evidenced by my many many many undisputed orders). Of course none of the several reps I spoke with last night explained that my non-fraudulent addresses were being blocked. I only found out this morning while trying to place an order. What an unwelcome surprise. To make a long rambling story relatively short, I was instructed by a rep to create a brand new account last night. So I did, but the rep failed to inform me that my legit addresses were also blocked as they are "under review for fraud." The amount of time I've spent trying to resolve this is ridiculous. Why would my legit addresses be under investigation? Over the last ~20 years, FD has made tens of thousands of dollars from my orders. And now I'm blocked from using perfectly non-fraudulent addresses because some degenerate loser hacked into my account and specifically sent orders to Crown Heights. It upsets me to say that I cannot use Fresh Direct again. Their reps have handled this situation so poorly. My breaking point was the fact that my elderly parents are now being denied food to their completely legit address, while an "investigation for fraud" of unknown duration is conducted. Having no idea how long this will take is completely unacceptable. Fresh Direct can't give me any information as to how long this FBI-level investigation will take place, so I instructed a rep to cancel my account completely, and refund my unused product credits and Delivery Pass. My tenure with Fresh Direct is now over. Could have been avoided if this issue was handled properly. Fresh Direct should inform customers that their addresses are under review for fraud. This ordeal was such a complete waste of my time and energy. Fresh Direct needs to better secure customers' private information (e.g., passwords and credit card information). Surely I am not the first and only victim of degenerate losers delivering cases of alcohol (and god knows what else) at the expense of honest customers. read more

I've been a customer for seven years. Since they moved their warehouse their customer service has taken a nose dive. Two weeks ago my delivery slot was 8 PM to 10 PM. I contacted customer service at 10:15 PM. I was told that it was scanned as delivered at 10:07 PM. That driver's often scan deliveries while the delivery is still on the truck. Order arrived just before 11 PM. I received multiple promises that management would get back to me....that the transportation department would get back to me to explain how a delivery can arrive 50 minutes after it is marked delivered. No one contacted me. For the second week in a row I noticed that when I've ordered some items that are on sale, my final price is higher. I've altered my orders but never changed anything about the sale priced item, the order total or the delivery slot. It was explained to me that if I modify an order in any fashion and the item's price goes up...I pay the higher price. Even though they don't let me know long the sale price is good for or even that the price of an item in my order has gone up. It is my responsibility to check the current price of an item in my order against the price of that item when I originally placed that order. I have been a Fresh Direct customer since 2005 - almost since the beginning! I had a toddler, I was moving into a new apartment, and I had a family member coming for Christmas. Help! Fortunately I remembered FD, and placed an order. Christmas was saved, and I didn't have to bring my child to the grocery store, with all the hassles that entailed. Fast forward to 2020 and COVID. I wanted to be in public as little as possible. With a FD membership you can select a weekly delivery slot, and so long as you place an order every week you will not lose your spot so of course, I have ordered every week! There's so much to like about FD, but I'll keep it short: the food is nearly always fresh, and in the event there is a problem (something is broken, missing, etc.) they will give you a credit - no questions asked. I've been ordering from them for over 15 years - I think that speaks for my level of satisfaction! read more

I called Customer Service and was put on hold at least 15 minutes. When I finally spoke to a supervisor he said the driver with my order "was not answering his phone". As a goodwill gesture they offered $5.75 cents off a $300 order. I told them it was insulting and outrageous. The $5.75 was the delivery fee! That should have been an automatic refund. So here I sit, no food, no answers, and a vague promise that a supervisor will "call me back" when he knows something. Don't feel like descending 3 flights of stairs, walking 7 blocks, and lugging your insanely heavy grocery bags back the way you came...? Fresh Direct. Too much work and not enough time to peruse the aisles as the grocery store...? Fresh Direct. Too cold to go outside? Thunder and lightening? Favorite movie on TV? Feel like doing something nice for your grandma...? Fresh Direct! I initially had trouble setting up my account, but one phone call was all it took to clarify the problem - which, by the way, was that I used Google Chrome to place my order, and the Fresh Direct site is not compatible with this web browser (!!). So for you Google Chrome users: use Firefox instead. Because I had never been on the site, I didn't know what to expect. I was pleased as punch (yes, really) to discover that they have an entire "Organic Market" offering fresh fruits and veggies, meats, soups, and cereals. There is a "search" function which makes it really easy to find specific items you're craving (let's just say, for example, Ben & Jerry's Heath Bar Crunch) or have run out of (paper towels & laundry detergent, perhaps). There is something incredibly satisfying about putting all of these items into your basket and not having to carry it around. Fresh Direct also sells wine, ranging in price from $9 to $50, with the option to buy in bulk (hollerrrrr!). They also sell Organic Cucumber Vodka, Glenlivet single malt scotch, Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, 6-packs of Newcastle, and cases of Hoegaarden. And they bring it right to your door. Fresh Direct is often times fresher than your neighborhood grocery store. To hear (or read in the reviews) someone complain that the food only lasts three days is abominable. Fresh Direct tells you how long it will last and when it says three days that means it is fresh, not frozen, and that is good, right? Some people like to go through the aisles at supermarkets, but those people are not me. I prefer to run my cart directly into those who are not paying attention when leaving an aisle or those who talk on their phone while trying to push with one hand. Some people like to go to the market when they are hungry and come home with a bunch of crap because you saw it and had to have it, but those people have been me, but not anymore. I prefer to use my last shopping list and then adjust. I prefer to get a mix of ready-to-heat sides or meals, as well as tons of fresh vegetables and fruits and cases of Tazo green iced tea. I honestly do not have a clue why everyone does not use Fresh Direct. The features are much enhanced from a couple of years ago, you can see what fruits and vegetables are the freshest each day and hello again, the prices are cheaper than your neighborhood grocery where a box of cereal is like $6 or more. Try it, you will live by it. Also, if you have a six-year old daughter who decides one day to become a vegetarian, Fresh Direct can be a valuable resource for alternative protein sources (edamame dumplings, seitan, vegetarian prepared meals) and fresh items so you can test out and support this endeavor. Caveat #2: I have minimal arm strength and carrying 5+ lbs of groceries tires me out and makes me super cranky. Freshdirect delivers to my third-floor walkup. Score! If there were a Trader Joe's or H-Mart on campus, would I be using FreshDirect? Definitely not. Since most people don't live within walking distance of one anyway, FreshDirect really wins for its incredible convenience, great customer service, farm-fresh, locally-sourced and good-quality meats & veggies, and awesome discounts and giveaways. Is FreshDirect cheap? No, definitely not. If prices comes above all else, FreshDirect is not for you. If you're environment-conscious, quality-seeking, budget-conscious and flexible, however, you can make FreshDirect work. I've seen four heads of broccoli go for $4, cut-up whole chicken parts for $1/lb, two bunches of kale for $4 and great quality salmon for $6.99/lb. The FreshDirect brand actually offers pretty great quality and relatively low prices; my roommate was stunned by the quality of milk that I bought for her - "I've never had milk taste so good! I'm addicted to this milk [insert emoji with hearts for eyes]." (I'm not a milk drinker so I don't really know what she means, but she adores it. And she "spoils" herself by getting FreshDirect milk. I think that speaks to how good it is). The other day, I asked my friend to get me skinless, boneless chicken thighs from Trader Joe's, thinking that they'd be cheaper. It turns out that they were $4/lb at TJ and $3.19/lb on FreshDirect (sale). Oops. So sometimes FreshDirect is actually cheaper! Crazy, huh? They've done random giveaways in the past; I'm not sure how they work. This whole month, though, they've been doing giveaways every few days and they've been really great so far. I've gotten to try chobani flip yogurt, matcha love green tea, kale banana pineapple popsicles, quark - and more. :O FreshDirect also supplies non-food household items - paper towels, lightbulbs, laundry detergent, etc. The 1-day shipping is amazing because it's even faster than Amazon Prime (and often cheaper, too). Definitely has been a lifesaver when I ran out of toilet paper. :x Customer service is super responsive and really great (aka refunds, no questions asked). When my eggs broke a few times, they credited me immediately. The other day, I was surprised that my pre-sliced ribs ($12) were actually not pre-sliced - not a big deal, but I wanted to know what was up with the slicing because I'd rather not order non-sliced meat in the future. I emailed them and they promptly credited me. Overall, I have zero complaints against FreshDirect. I have never had a messed up order and all of my food has been excellent quality (no spoilage or rottenness). The $30 minimum forces me to compile a grocery list for a week at a time, and the time that it sits in the cart allows me to reevaluate whether or not I really want those items. I find that I don't buy random things as often, and I've had much less food waste than I had in the past. I've ordered from FreshDirect over 30 times in the past 7 months and I'm really happy with my experience so far. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in grad school (or really, anyone with a busy schedule). Fandom! Though some items are wee bit more expensive than usual, I definitely need a little more Fresh Direct in my busy life schedule. Sometimes, I just don't have time in my life to grocery shop which results in lots of ordering in when I'm at home which results in me not eating as healthy as I'd like which results in bigger jeans which results in me being really friggin' mad. Fresh Direct has changed that for me, at least this week. My order of fresh berries, fruits, salad, deli meat and cereals has made my kitchen and me very happy this week (as I slurp down my homemade smoothie). Yes, some items tend to be a wee bit more expensive. Yes, you can't touch, smell or feel any of the food, and yes sometimes I don't realize that 1 lbs of potatoes = 2 potatoes but, I still love ya and I'll still give ya my business during my busy season! Wow, I am surprised to see the reviews here, I think FreshDirect is ahead of their time and better than Amazon Fresh and Jet. I've been able to enjoy local dry sea scallops at 40% off all summer. You can't even find dry scallops in stores, much less at 40% off. Their 4-minute prepared meals have to be among the best value in the country. I have never had anything delivered to me that was bad, and I think only once was a delivery ever late. The local USDA Prime beef is off the charts better than I can get anywhere else, and I am pretty connected with online delivery services. I could rattle through example after example, but the impression I have of FreshDirect is that they really care about their customers. From the people that buy the products and pick and pack the orders, to the drivers who bring my newspaper to the front door, and the most knowledgeable customer service department I have ever called, I don't mind paying a little more to be cared about as much as these people do. How thick do you want your deli slices? Do you want those steaks in vacuum packaging? Sorry we didn't deliver a couple of items in your order, here's $10 off your next order. Here is a list of things you've purchased in the past that are on sale this week. Who does this? No one that I know of. They work very hard to constantly win me over as a customer, but they had me when my first two orders arrived without my bread being crushed or my eggs being broken. Is this how lazy we've become as a society in which a small company has begun thriving to deliver pre-selected groceries to your doorstep? In a word, yes. Its not even laziness either, as much as it is convenience. The prices for FreshDirect are usually not outrageous, if not borderline reasonable. If reasonable prices combined with direct mailing is worth it, then thats what these folks do best. The variety is good and the delivery times are fast. Most of the people I've dealt with in person or on the phone have been pleasant and courteous. If there were any screw ups in the order, they would be quick to replace and send immediately. Hopefully one of these days they'll be available to other places around the country, other than Manhattan. read more

I ordered from them from time to time, but I recently couldn't live with myself from ever ordering from Fresh Direct again. (They also have been late a couple of times - outside the delivery window!) Sure, it's convenient and no need to carry a bunch of things or trying to hail a cab while juggling groceries... But you can't pick how hard and crunchy you want your fruit to be and not to mention the most important thing of all - PACKAGING! It finally occurred to me how wasteful I was being and just for the sake of convenience I am willing to kill so many trees? OMG, Fresh Direct like packs like 1 bag of loose spinach in 1 huge box and then I got 4 more boxes to pack my 1 whole pineapple, two pint of soup and chocolate croissant. As a person who works too much and late hours, drinks too much to do any form of errands during hours that are followed by "am", and only had one day off a week, Fresh Direct is proof that there is a god out there. $5 delivery* and only a $30 minimum? sold. Honestly, I am always running around, travelling or never home, so the rare occasion i have a day off, you can sure bet i am not trying to leave my bed for anything - not even groceries. ESPECIALLY when the grocery stores around here have awful awful disgusting produce and meat. FORGET IT! I dont have the time to make food for myself AND worry about potential food poisoning. So I tried Fresh Direct. Ordered about 40 bucks in groceries, which when i do the math would have been about 60+ bucks at the grocery store around me (not to mention probably not edible thereafter). I get caught up at work super late sometimes, so i decided to try for a 10PM -1130PM DELIVERY to see if they'll actually listen or try to send my groceries when no ones there. Also made sure to make the note that my bell doesnt work sometimes and to call my cell. Called their customer service twice with questions. People on the phone were awesome, pleasant and i didnt have to wait on hold for 90 minutes. One guy was even playful and fun on the phone and hooked it up with 2 months of free deliveries (turning off the auto renewal for $60 for me) So tonight was the night I scheduled for delivery. Perfect Perfect Perfect. I got home tonight at 930pm, groceries came at 10:15pm. The delivery guy was nice, not rude or sleazy. Asked where to put the groceries and i directed him to the kitchen counter. I opened my box of groceries and everything was accounted for, charged right. perfect. My lettuce was a perfect bright fresh looking green - not brown and gross where i have to peel off the first 3 layers of leaves to get like 2 leaves of edible romaine. 2 packs of 3 hearts of Romaine for $5. cmon. cant beat that. My chicken was fresh and as im eating some i grilled up right now, ill tell you it tastes yummy. My salmon fillets were the right color and didnt smell bad. Both of which cost less than what they do in these local grocery stores, and are a ton fresher. I am in love. and thats alot coming from this girl.
