We went to Aldi because we needed to go to Marshall's for something, and I had told the Mommy about "the Aisle of Shame." Unbeknownst to me, while I was squeezing tomatoes, she asked two people where it was! They gave her strange looks and said that they didn't know. OMG, lol. The correct name is "Aldi Finds" :D We found the aisle, and managed not to buy any gnomes because they were mostly orange, and neither of us likes the color. We did get a few groceries. Aldi really has great prices! While the stores are never particularly attractive, in terms of aesthetics, the groceries and fun stuff render that irrelevant. Cold cuts, for example, are MUCH cheaper than at local UES stores. They're prepackaged, not sliced to order, but I didn't care. There's a good selection of cheese and ice cream. We didn't get much because we had to lug everything on the bus. The disadvantage for us is that it is pretty far uptown. But with Costco and Marshall's in the same building, it's one-stop shopping. Aldi serves me well in every city I've lived. Prices are good, and while selections are limited, I don't really care. Since I happened to be in East River Plaza, I checked out the Aldi located there. Mixed impression: lines were super long, with no self check-out. I guess this curbs thievery. The store was messy -- not as bright and light as other Aldis. While I noticed what appeared to be guards up front, I saw nobody tending the floor. On the plus side -- this store stocks everything I buy at their other locations: produce, garlic-stuffed olives, tenderloin, frozen vegetables... and their prices are comparable. I'll likely come back, but reliant on public transportation, I'll need someone to help me schlep home my purchases. It's not worth waiting on a long line when I'm limited with what I can buy. I love Aldi products, most are great quality and have amazing prices, I'm giving 2 stars to this location in particular because every time I've been here the produce area is a disaster, unorganized and dirty, and also because I can never find everything I'm looking for since a lot of items are always out of stock. In average when I order online I need to choose a replacement or refund for about 30% of my order, that's a lot. Most of the times is because items are out of stock and other times the shoppers tell me for example that produce is already damage at the store and it won't be edible. I've experienced the same when I shop in person, empty shelves, boxes in the aisles, rotten produce in the shelves. I've been different days, different hours, always the same inventory problem, not necessarily recurrent items are out of stock, it could be anything anytime that is simply not available so it's always a surprise to shop here and see what you will find. Unfortunately managment in this location is making a terrible job and I don't find the store reliable anymore after having experience the same thing over and over. I've been shopping in Aldi on Nostrand avenue since they opened. Boy has this place changed and not for the good. The new self checkout is a compete failure. Everyone is suspicious of thievery. After I spent 20 minutes packing my order I spent another 5-7 minutes waiting for my order to be looked over. I have meats and frozen items tpo get home. So yeas, I put up a stink about it. They can delay you but don't offer any assistance to disabled people. I wanted to return the whole order...I was told to get at the end of the line. I called the police to document the issue. Sadly they would not take a report. I will follow up with the main office. Then the manager comes over to take the empty cart...he said it's only for customers to use to shop. Well, there were 30-4 carts outside and probably that many or more on the roof. Next the same manager told me I can not take pictures in the store. My reply was he needed to post a sign stating that like other business do. He then said he doesn't care to argue with me, It's not worth it. My reply, because there is no defense. When a store has policies they need to post it. They should also inform people that with ALL the security cameras on the self checkout they shouldn't need to harass customers. Just post the two people that were checking bags near the registers??? I am disabled and suffer from chronic pain. Aldi is a contender for well priced stuff. The quality varies sometimes, but it's usually much better than the local stores. It can get crazy though. I think all of Manhattan instacarts to this Aldi. So you will deal will instacart shoppers that are running through the store and sometimes assholes. But gotta make that hustle I guess. If you, don't mind long lines and a leisure trip for savings. Make the journey. It's mostly stocked well. The staff works hard. The lines are always long but I reckon they are understaffed. Buy cheese here! Good quality and cheap. Aldi has a decent selection of food almost every time I have been, however they don't have everything, so double check what they have before you visit. Since I have not tried out any new restaurants lately, I have decided to write about a business I am thankful for. During these hard times, it was hard to find something reliable. As anyone who has shopped at Aldi knows, they are a cheaper version of Trader Joe's. The selection of meats and vegetables are satisfactory, and the price makes it even more appealing. Since I do not have a Trader Joe's near me, this particular supermarket has been a life saver during these days of quarantine. While there are items that may not taste as good as the name brands, most of the items are just as good, if not better. I will continue to shop here when everything goes back to normalcy. Conclusion: Great supermarket for those that want to save money, and have quality food choices. The store itself is very clean and well stocked. The cashiers are very quick and efficient. ONE BIG PROBLEM though...the amount of personal shoppers for Shipt or instacart etc...is very bad. They run around the store with their shopping wagons and bump regular customers. I have had to dodge some of these shoppers. I like to check out the deals at this store. I do have a problem with the cash or debit card only. I never buy large quantities since you need to supply your own bags too. I'm usually loaded with COSTCO purchases when I go there. I did go with the purpose to shop mainly at Aldo my last trip. I checked the expiration dates on some of the items. I wanted to stock up on snacks and cereals for the winter. The expiration dates were very close to expire. Just be careful to check! I ended up leaving without buying what I came to buy. Yuck. Have to downgrade to two stars after tasting some of the things I purchased. This place is VERY hit or miss but a little too much "miss" for me to consider coming back anytime soon except maaaaaybbeee for a few dry goods. I'll update as I try more things. The Bad - Frozen turkey burgers by Kirkland: Disgusting! Texture of the infamous "pink slime" and look like watery pate once they are broiled. I wasn't brave enough to even taste it. Hit the trash. - Organic coconut water: More water than coconut. Wasn't bad but extremely watered down version of the real deal. - Friendly Farms light greek yogurt: Adequate for 65 cents but not especially good. I liked the fact that it had only 6-8 grams of sugar, but the combination of flavor wasn't palatable. I'd rather pay more for Fage and go easy on the fruit jelly that comes with it. The Good - Cranberry cheese: Pretty decent, but not great. - Triscuit knockoffs: Perfectly fine - Salsa from the refrigerated section: Fine but pretty watery - Blue corn tortilla chips: Alright but not enough salt. Corn very finely ground - Sea salt popcorn: This was good. You literally can't f*ck up popcorn unless you burn it. Usually, I do my shopping between City Fresh, Whole Foods 125th, and Wild Olive on 125t. But also love a good bargain; especially on dry goods and little odds and ends. You take the elevator up, go straight and there it is. Last time I went to an Aldi's was as a kid like 15 years ago, so I really didn't have any expectations. I remembered to bring my shopping bags and was relieved that I didn't have to pay for a cart. You just grab one of the abandoned ones in front and go on your way. The store is pretty spartan and quite frankly, not very pretty. There are no shelf displays. Everything is piled up, and you have to look closely to find things you want. I was cautious to read ingredients because while a lot of things seem appealing, they are full of artificial colors and preservatives. I'm not a health nut by any means, but try not consume too much of that crap. So beware if you are mindful of your diet. Overwise, there are some good things to be found, and I would say that I could do about 50% of my shopping here. The meat and produce section is pretty dismal. Love this store! I buy packages of zucchini, fresh salmon, cheeses etc. I like the large sides of salmon so I can portion myself. I still like HMart the best for Salmon. I am very careful to look at expiration or freshness dates on packages. I no longer buy the smoked salmon here. Their added salt is twice the amount of salt added to Costco's smoked salmon. Their frozen cakes or pie desserts are exceptional. It's not easy to find them stocked though. I usually don't buy the salads... they just doesn't look crispy enough for me. The chocolates are a great value. The cheddar Asiago crisps when in stock are also great. The raw chicken "tenders " are a pain. I have to dissect the tendons out of each piece. Both stores are located in Harlem but the difference is like night and day: Aldi (and I'm referring only to the one on East 117th ST) is dirty, disordered; staff are rude when you are lucky to find one: a true ghetto store. I am still amazed at how cheap the food at Aldi really is once I get to the register. I mean you'd think after the first couple times that I would catch on, but hey, I'm not complaining! Most of Aldi's food products are "off brand", but that doesn't mean bad! Sure there are some misses, but for the most part its on par with the overpriced food in regular grocery stores. If you are gonna try anything, YOU HAVE to get the Millville Toaster Tarts. Say goodbye to regular Pop Tarts after you've had these...honestly they are 10x better in terms of taste and size. When I go here I usually stock up on rice, salad dressing, wraps, guacamole, cereal, shredded cheese, eggs, and pasta sauce (just to name a few great deals). Everyone is nice in the store, which makes it a good shopping experience. If anything, it has a more limited selection of products...but I mean you can't have everything be that cheap. Super discount grocery shopping with a good variety of options. So many good deals to enjoy! They carry their own store brand of goods so there's not a lot of name brand products, but who cares the price, quality, and taste of the goods certainly prove their value. They have a good selection of produce as well. Fruits and vegetables here are both cheap and fresh! They have a bottled iced coffee that is amazing, it even comes in seasonal flavors like caramel and pumpkin which are both delicious. They carry store brand versions of familiar items like cereals, juice, canned goods and frozen goods. They have an entire aisle dedicated to snacks (pretzels, chips, crackers, cookies, granola, popcorn, nuts) that stands up to any grocery store in terms of choices but simply blows them away in pricing. I have yet to find something that they're missing, its a pretty complete grocery store. Feel like I just walked into Bizarro-Land supermarket world! Walking around this new discount supermarket and seeing the aisles and aisles of yellow signs showing off cheapo prices I could not help to think that this is a poor-mans version of Costco which is located just downstairs. Almost every product is a knockoff of well known name brands, and some laughingly so as it's blatantly obvious. Most every brand name here I never heard of. We found a few known brands scattered here and there and even they were low priced. I guess it targets those who are budgeting and don't care about spending a lot on name brands. Mostly dry and canned goods but they do have some refrigerated and frozen items. There is actually an overall diverse selection here. Not a bad option if not looking to buy in bulk at Costco or spend a lot on groceries. The store itself is kind of generic and bland. No music playing and the staff seems indifferent while just doing their jobs. They are trying to be a "green store" and will charge for plastic bags so be sure to bring your own. Also, cash or debit card only. Low brow all the way, but a great option for those on a tighter budget. read more

I only know the Aldi's in upper Manhattan and my comments should be construed as being directed at them alone. Aldi's shares its mall space in NYC with Costco. Costco sells quantities often too large for me so I explored Aldi's. At first glance I dismissed Aldi's as a cheap vendor of second rate products. But as I read more about them, I became more adventurous in shopping them - and found much that reflected real value and quality. I have been describing them as a company that provided Costco pricing but in smaller quantities. Their fresh side of salmon is a particular treat - cheaper than Costco, fresh, beautiful, well packed and excellent. The produce is often excellent and fresh. The ice cream is a bargain. I have been shopping them frequently for about two years now, the last year through Instacart (another problematic company). During the pandemic period I have found many prices have jumped significantly, some more than 100%, with no apparent reason. I found the chicken thighs, priced the same as Costco's (at 99 cents/pound), to carry a huge amount of extra fat and skin so that the actual price for the thighs is about $1.50/pound. Some produce, e.g., bagged tomatoes, is not being appropriately culled so some items are not in good condition when sold (and Instacart buyers may be too hurried to examine each item). I see customers eating grapes from bags - which compromises cleanliness. For these reasons, among others, the actual cost/benefit balance has dropped significantly in this last year so I can no longer endorse them to friends and family. Good and valuable bargains may be had but you have to shop with care. The physical plant is a bit depressing; checkout lines are long - but the cashiers usually do an efficient job; the staff is patient and pleasant but hard to find; stock is hit or miss - so desired items may not be available. read more

Hello, I am a regular customer at the1830 South Road Wappingers Falls, NY location. I visited Aldi yesterday 08/04/22 with my 4 years old son who is autistic and my 68year old grand aunt. My son happened to start coughing when we were about to check out and the cashier Stanelle, talked to him inappropriately telling him to cover his mouth then had a look on her face like she was disgusted. It was a long line of people there that made it worse and more traumatizing for my son. I then said to her he's not going to do that he doesn't understand he's autistic, he has a disability. She then rudely said to us, "if guys were teaching him I'm sure he would learn!". I quickly finished checking out and brought my son and grand aunt to the car and went back inside to look for the manager. As soon as I walked in I saw a gentleman walking from Stanelle's direction so I said to him that I'm looking for the manager. At that time he stopped to answer me in front of the line of customers and he said he was the manager. I said okay I have an issue to report, I told him and he said "okay, I'll talk to her later" just plain and no sincerity and walked away. There was no customer service displayed at all. Now I see why the employees are like that. I was torn up about how my autistic son was treated and as a parent with a child with disabilities. This outlet is always fully stocked. It isn't as big as some other ones and so they sell a smaller product range but there is still a great variety nonetheless. The meat is of good quality, I usually buy in bulk and freeze. And can we talk about the frosted flakes! A whole box of sugary goodness for just over a dollar! This is a must-buy.
