Always great to visit any Aldi. The prices are the lowest around and they have a good selection of organic produce. It's great the cashiers can sit if they can - no reason to stand in front of customers if you don't have to. Stores are small, simple and well organized. read more

Great variety of heathy beverages, low priced vegetables including lots of organic food! Too many sugary foods. Staff is friendly, helpful, caring, and gets things done to help you get what you need, and get home quickly. read more

Totally disorganized and annoying. I hope they settle in better the old market in this space was MUCH better!

I have been to Aldi many times and I am a huge fan. It is VERY cheap - especially considered to everywhere else in Manhattan. Milk is usually at least $1-$2 cheaper per gallon and meat is fairly inexpensive too. There are many "off brands" being sold here, but they are honestly just as good as name brand stuff from other grocery stores. The pop-tarts, cereal, trail mix, granola, oatmeal, beans, cheeses, etc are all delicious and great quality. Huge selection of snacks, cheeses, and breads but the produce and meat section is lacking (though what is there is usually inexpensive). I like coming here and all of the workers have been friendly. I didn't realize but I think that they now take credit cards! Not just cash only! read more

ALDI - Get these!! Knock off poptarts are A+ - Grocery Near Me - New York, New York

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Bring a quarter for your shopping cart and bring your own bags (or purchase them at the register - bags are not free here). Great for bargain basics (mostly unfamiliar and off brands). Only takes Debit or cash - no credit. Excellent for trash bags, paper towels, and TP. Has produce, frozen items, cans, drinks, cookies and snacks, you name it. Worth checking out to fill in the gaps in your pantry. Significantly less expensive than Gristedes, Morton Williams, and many uptown grocery stores. read more

Wow. How have I never known about this place? Talk about cheap! I've never been a brand whore so places like Aldi and Trader Joe's really speak to me. They have all the essentials you would want in a grocery store plus a ton of ready to eat frozen foods. Everything is priced like they're going out of business. They have minimal staff, everything is stocked in the wholesale boxes they were shipped in. Nothing I have purchased here has been disappointing. I wish this was closer to my place but I guess a mile isn't a crazy far distance to walk. I will be shopping here for as long as I live in East Harlem. Who needs Whole Foods and Fairway when you have places like Aldi and Trader Joe's? read more

I live in Astoria, which means I'm halfway between the Harlem and Rego Park Aldis. Both are in big shopping centers, but Harlem wins because it's right next door to Target. Whatever groceries you can't get at Aldi, you can pick up cheap next door. (I'm looking at you, natural peanut butter. One of my pet peeves about Aldi is that they put palm oil and sugar in theirs. I have no idea what their deal is.) So yes, there's a lot of processed food. But Aldi isn't all just chips and cookies, I promise. I went to the Harlem Aldi today, and here's the healthy stuff I bought: avocados (.79 each!), mandarins, organic apples, bananas, bagged salad, corn on the cob, maple syrup, fruit leather (no added sugar), shredded wheat cereal (unsweetened), their version of Clif bars (I'm convinced they're just repackaged with the Aldi label), soymilk, almonds, cashews, carrots, hummus, organic pasta sauce, and whole wheat pasta. They have an organic packaged line called SimplyNature; I got some veggie chips and they taste exactly like Terra Chips. They've also got a new gluten-free line now, and I bought a box of the mac & cheese just to see, but I haven't tried it yet. So all that stuff, plus some spices (pepper mill, a jar of chopped garlic, real vanilla extract), a couple of frozen cheese pizzas ($2 and delicious, seriously), a container of feta cheese, detergent and fabric softener (both of which are just as good as the name brands) and a couple of other cleaning supplies, came to $79. I realize it just took me a lot of parentheses to tell you about my groceries, but the point is, go. It's worth it. Oh, and the M15 express bus drops you off two blocks away, so it's easy. read more

Don't listen to the haters. If you are a laid back person and appreciate good value and quality- then come to aldi. Not only are the basics are at a cheaper price than any store in NYC but they also have great speciality products that you can try. Good selection of organic dairy and veggies. One star off for sometimes being out of products since they get mobbed on the weekend- lines long but move quick. read more

I'm so grateful that this store (a value division of the same co. responsible for Trader Joes.) exists within accessible distance to my residence. What do I consistently find the best prices on? woven crackers, oats, mayo, sugar-free drink mixes, big cans of ground coffee, frozen lb. logs of ground turkey, orange juice concentrate. I don't buy their produce much but did get several of their 3 lb. bags of sweet potatoes & onions for .99. Keep your eyes peeled for red tagged items. I have found gallons of milk for 1.89, quarter loafs of older bread, .49 for 3 lb. containers of chicken salad w/almonds & cranberries. etc. Forget your bags & don't wanna buy them from the cashier? Check out the bag recycle bin right inside the entrance of Target next door. Wanna not have to contend with the quarter cart system? Once again, visit Target first & just bring their cart in. No free bags, credit cards (only debit.) Best value pricing in NYC. read more

Aldi is not fancy, but it has amazing prices on food! I have never been attached to name brands, as long as the food is high quality, and at Aldi, it IS! HIgh priced items like Greek yogurt are super cheap at Aldi ($0.89 at time of review), and I honestly can't tell the difference. The Aldi brand Cheerios are less than $2! The produce selection is not large, mostly basics, but that's often all I need to supplement my big Costco buys. (And a large container of grapes for less than $3? Count me in!) I do a lot of my grocery shopping at Costco, but whenever I need non-ginormous portions, I've been at a loss. Aldi is my answer! I am throwing a New year's Eve party tonight, and because of Aldi, I could do all the food for less than $50. Super awesome! BTW, Aldi is the parent company/store of Trader Joes. Think of them like Trader Joe's less-gourmet, no-nonsense cousin. read more

Listen most of us know this is Trader Joe's real budget sibling..They are limited in the selection of fresh produce.. They do have a growing line of private label organic foodstuffs.. What have I bought? bananas, avocados, mushrooms, private label detergent; an onion, tomato dicer hand contraption, the type you see on infomercials; paper towels.. (haven't tried the toilet paper yet) private label laundry detergent..(has the same ingredients as the brand names, and then the best: Aldi bags..sturdy and can hold everything.. makes a great beach bag.. There are plenty of people on a budget.. and I have spoken to people shopping; some come here before they head downstairs to Costco.. read more

Its amazing how you can find just about everything that you need in this tiny store, and its about 1/3-2/3 the cost of name brands. Yes they carry their own brands, but with the exception of just a few things (like Oreos, you can't replace Oreos) the knock-offs are every bit as good if not better. sometimes its annoying they only have 1 or 2 cash registers open and staff aren't that friendly, but then when I realize how fast the line moves bc you pack you own stuff, and I realize I am not paying a premium for my product on unnecessary costs, I am totally ok with it. I walk out with enough food to feed a family of 3 for 1-2 weeks, and never spend more than $50, and we eat very well. I couldn't be happier. Thank you, I think other grocery stores should take some lessons from Aldis Debit/cash only, that is just fine with me. read more

I survived two poor student months in Germany only thanks to Aldi. I was so glad to find it NYC! Old friend is still true - i bought a two week supply of food for two for about $75, and that included meat and sausages. Don't forget to bring a quarter for the cart and your own bags - Aldi doesn't use plastic bags at all. Bonus fact: Did you know the owners of Aldi and Trader Joe's are brothers? Now you do. read more

This place is so awesome!!! A total bizarro-third dimension of off brand products, but absolutely excellent prices. If you have been in need of Wal-mart like prices and Save-a-Lot type brands, this is the place for you. A lot cheaper than most of the uptown stores, including Trader Joes. I would come here for basics, and head else where for your fancy sauces and what not- this place is pretty plain jane. I bought about $30 worth of stuff that would have cost me $50 at TJ's and probably $60+, and the off brand Special K with Red Berries that I had for dinner was EXCELLENT! They have a pretty decent fresh food section as well as packaged and canned. I didn't see any expired items, and everything was pretty big, no tiny milks! Don't forget no grocery bags (they have totes and sacks you can buy), and only debit or cash! Also the M116 takes you about one block away and you can catch it from almost every major train station if you need! read more

Aldi is the trashy older brother of Trader Joe's - in fact, they are owned by the same mysterious German company. Trashy because you can buy all the unhealthy, processed stuff (stuff you will be hard pressed to find in NYC sometimes) like private label Cheez Whiz and Velveeta (I grew up on the latter). Everything else is cheaper (almost all private label) than your branded equivalents, with some organic and German food thrown into the mix. Like Trader Joe's, produce is hit or miss (but usually miss), but you will fill your basket for much less money like its corporate sibling. Three notes - no beer, no credit cards (debit only), and you have to bag your owl groceries, comrade. read more

Have continued to shop at Aldi, great pricing , product and service. AWESOME!!!!! read more

It's just plain fun shopping here -- so many good look-a-like products that taste as good (or better) than the original! Try the Chilli/Lime Cashews for a nice snack! It should be noted that while every grocery store in Manhattan only carries FAKE, partially hydrogenated soybean oil-based chip dip, Aldi's has REAL sour cream-based chip dip! Explore! What they are out of stock on, pop next door to the back of Target in the "pantry" and get what else you need -- but start at Aldi's!! Did you know that Aldi's is owned by the same people that own Trader Joe's? read more

This is the best place to get groceries in the city, or anywhere really. The prices are unbeatable and the store has all the staples any kitchen needs. They only sell the aldi brand, which is delicious, but you can't get name brand foods here. They only take cash, debit card, or ebt cards-- no credit card . Also, bring your own bags or be ready to pay for them. Finally you need a quarter to get the cart (which you get back if you return the cart yourself). I can't recommend this place highly enough! read more

This is a bag it yourself, we don't take credit under a certain amount endeavor with lots of off brand items but if you're looking for a deal on milk or aren't picky about getting a name brand, you'll do well in here. Just make sure you bring your own bags and sufficient cash. Staff is really friendly though it does seem to get packed here. read more

My gf put me on to ALDI, which is a sister chain of Trader Joe's. First time we came here, she was super excited and I was super suspicious what with all the cheap deals. I soon found out that the food was great quality, even the produce, which is rare in Harlem. Turns out my girlfriend would shop here with her family as a child in Chicago, so she knew what she was talking about. Do yourself a favor if you live in the area or are visiting, and check it out. You might get hooked. read more

I have to agree with the review that said it was hit or miss. I often can't find the vegan butter or bananas. On a good note the things I buy like peanut butter, tomato sauce and bagels cost much less than other supermarkets read more

A little out of the way - but a nice no-frills grocery store. If you're looking to save $$$, this is a great way to do it. Their products are mostly all store brand, but everything I've tried is pretty good quality. Love their hummus and french onion dip...especially for under $2 each! Can't beat their prices in Manhattan! I also prefer their plain baked potato chips to Baked Lays, and they're about half the price! Great place to stock up on canned veggies/soups/mixes for super cheap. They have a decent selection of fresh produce and meat - probably can't find everything you're looking for in those categories here, but you can tackle the better portion of your list! Last summer I had a BBQ for about 20 + people and only spent about $40 on ALL of the food....and I bought TONS! Now that the weather is getting nice again, I'm doing my best to make a Saturday morning grocery run at Aldi! FYI - Aldi only takes debit cards or cash, so keep that in mind. Also, bring your own bags - they aren't free here. You'll also have to bag your own groceries. read more

If you like to gamble, Aldi's might be worth a trip. Or it might not. Are you feeling lucky? Aldi's target audience is people on a budget, and those who don't give a damn about packaging and brand names. All the packaged foods look like a rip-off of something you HAVE heard of. There's not much fresh food, and what there is seems to be quite basic (iceberg lettuce, potatoes, onions). Everything about Aldi's seems a bit off, design-wise. The store itself is generic-looking and cheerless, and the staff doesn't do much more than nod to customers. read more

This place is related to Trader Joe's, yay! I always get a small pack of mushrooms here, haha. We've also gotten some risotto and other random things for good prices. The only con is that you have to pay in cash, and they don't give you bags unless you pay for it (although I always have my backpack, and we really should be going more green like in other cities!). read more

Excellent Service!! I wrote into the corporate office about a concern I had. I received a call within 24 hours and a second response from a store manager within an hour of the first call. Walk in, reach for a cart, they're all chained up. Store attendant tells me I have to insert a quarter to use a cart but I'll get it back once I return the cart. If you have ever had to refrain from naming your child Camembert or Gruyere, for fear they would be incessantly bullied, Aldi is the place for cheese lovers like you. I had to upgrade Aldi because of the strides it has made in adding organic produce, truly lovely cheeses and for the good sales on produce. Are many of the brands no names you might shy away from? Well, just be selective, as I am. I always pop in just to check out the cheese. They won't cost you $20-$30 a lb but you can stock up and offer a cheese plate for that amount. I recommend sticking to the cheeses made overseas, like the exquisite cheddars I have found. Their guacamole is good too. Foraging here can produce Naked smoothies, brioche from France, and organic salad mixes(though beware the expiration dates!) . I tried their Belgium chocolate chips for baking and found them sub standard but I just won't buy them again. Shop smart. So the place has lighting that will age you and sometimes looks like a dump. You're here for the savings anyway. read more

Just went to Aldi today and I wasn't really impressed with the layout. There weren't any clear aisles and everything was sort of all over the place. People in Manhattan complain about the insane prices of groceries, but then diss places like Aldi! How absurd! I, for one, love Aldi. Everything is so cheap and you can get a majority of your shopping done for a fraction of the cost compared to Fairway. Yes, they are off brands, but who cares? The quality is excellent and I haven't ever been dissatisfied. It is a bit of a trek into East Harlem, but I don't mind. I don't feel unsafe walking from the subway station to this location. Aldi is a small grocery store without frills, but it simply does the job. If you want to beat the insane city prices, go to Aldi. Honestly, why pay more? Just because a popular product is advertised more and is "name-brand" it's better? Come on people! It's time to be smart consumers, not victims to advertisements! As a college student, I love the prices of Aldi, and have no complaints to this day. read more

You can't get everything here. But what you CAN get is definitely cheaper than anywhere else in Manhattan. I am from Germany and ALDI is a German company owned by two brothers. One of the brothers also owns Trader Joe's. So ALDI has been in my life forever and I was so happy to see them starting to pop up over here. It can be a hassle to get here when the bus doesn't show up, but it's always worth it. I buy staples like canned beans here, soy and almond milk, frozen veggies... They are around 20-30 cents cheaper here than at Trader Joe's. They recently started carrying a gluten free line, which couldn't make this Celiac happier! ALDI also has weekly specials that are not food. And they are always amazing. I've bought a juicer, food processor, pizza stone, popcorn maker, food storage containers... The prices are ridiculous (the juicer was $35!!!) and everything works great! There is a parking garage if you have a car (lucky!) but there is also a car service. They have a map that tells you exactly how much your car will be. Bring your own bags, they charge for plastic bags, German style. And you'll need a quarter to use a shopping cart. Also German style. Another bonus point is that it's right next to Target. And who doesn't like a good shopping trip to Target? If that's not your thing, GameStop is also right there. read more

I have already bought several times in this place since they have good prices, however, the attention is very poor, the cashiers are disrespectful and rude. They should give them a course on how customer service should be because their attention makes you want to never return. read more

Aldi is great, but I wish the U.S. version was more like the German version. I got to know Aldi when I lived in Europe for the summer. I'm not sure I would have liked it so much in the U.S. if I hadn't gotten to know it. Aldi is the biggest grocery store in Germany, and it is very, very cheap and follows a lot of European customs. It is owned by the same company as Trader Joe's is to TJ's what TJ's is to Pathmark. Some things are not like most American stores; for example, you have to put a quarter into the shopping cart but you get your quarter back when you return it (so that customers will return the carts). You bag your own groceries and you have to bring your own bags, or buy them. They have amazing prices. There are certain products they will always have, and some are more European than you typically get here, but I like that. For example, they have these lovely anise cookies that have very little sugar (and low calories). They also have weekly specials, which have some really unusual things at good prices. I've gotten Stevia, a lovely lamp, a dutch oven and a silicone baking sheet. Keep in mind, though, that those products are one-offs. I really wish that Aldi in the U.S. would carry more organic things. In Germany I would estimate that about a quarter of the store was 'bio' aka organic. Aldi here doesn't carry the organic items and I don't understand why not! Maybe they think American customers aren't as into organic, and I think that was true 15 years ago, but now I think they would probably do it. Finally, it is a schlep to a bus or subway. I wish they'd open one closer to a subway! read more
