People in Manhattan complain about the insane prices of groceries, but then diss places like Aldi! How absurd! I, for one, love Aldi. Everything is so cheap and you can get a majority of your shopping done for a fraction of the cost compared to Fairway. Yes, they are off brands, but who cares? The quality is excellent and I haven't ever been dissatisfied. It is a bit of a trek into East Harlem, but I don't mind. I don't feel unsafe walking from the subway station to this location. Aldi is a small grocery store without frills, but it simply does the job. If you want to beat the insane city prices, go to Aldi. Honestly, why pay more? Just because a popular product is advertised more and is "name-brand" it's better? Come on people! It's time to be smart consumers, not victims to advertisements! You can't get everything here. But what you CAN get is definitely cheaper than anywhere else in Manhattan. I am from Germany and ALDI is a German company owned by two brothers. One of the brothers also owns Trader Joe's. So ALDI has been in my life forever and I was so happy to see them starting to pop up over here. It can be a hassle to get here when the bus doesn't show up, but it's always worth it. I buy staples like canned beans here, soy and almond milk, frozen veggies... They are around 20-30 cents cheaper here than at Trader Joe's. They recently started carrying a gluten free line, which couldn't make this Celiac happier! ALDI also has weekly specials that are not food. And they are always amazing. I've bought a juicer, food processor, pizza stone, popcorn maker, food storage containers... The prices are ridiculous (the juicer was $35!!!) and everything works great! There is a parking garage if you have a car (lucky!) but there is also a car service. They have a map that tells you exactly how much your car will be. Bring your own bags, they charge for plastic bags, German style. And you'll need a quarter to use a shopping cart. Also German style. Another bonus point is that it's right next to Target. And who doesn't like a good shopping trip to Target? If that's not your thing, GameStop is also right there. read more

Aldi is great, but I wish the U.S. version was more like the German version. I got to know Aldi when I lived in Europe for the summer. I'm not sure I would have liked it so much in the U.S. if I hadn't gotten to know it. Aldi is the biggest grocery store in Germany, and it is very, very cheap and follows a lot of European customs. It is owned by the same company as Trader Joe's is to TJ's what TJ's is to Pathmark. Some things are not like most American stores; for example, you have to put a quarter into the shopping cart but you get your quarter back when you return it (so that customers will return the carts). You bag your own groceries and you have to bring your own bags, or buy them. They have amazing prices. There are certain products they will always have, and some are more European than you typically get here, but I like that. For example, they have these lovely anise cookies that have very little sugar (and low calories). They also have weekly specials, which have some really unusual things at good prices. I've gotten Stevia, a lovely lamp, a dutch oven and a silicone baking sheet. Keep in mind, though, that those products are one-offs. I really wish that Aldi in the U.S. would carry more organic things. In Germany I would estimate that about a quarter of the store was 'bio' aka organic. Aldi here doesn't carry the organic items and I don't understand why not! Maybe they think American customers aren't as into organic, and I think that was true 15 years ago, but now I think they would probably do it. Finally, it is a schlep to a bus or subway. I wandered in after going to Costco once and it was the best. decision. ever. I realized that Aldi's products are the off-brand version of the products made by name brand manufacturers, but because there are no advertising costs for name brand products built in, they're significantly cheaper. So wait-- same stuff, same quality, same manufacturer, but it's WAY cheaper?? heck yeah! name brand loyalists are suckers. I've shopped here once or twice. Yes, I agree there's no piped music and there aren't a lot of recognizable name brands, and you'd have to bag your own groceries.. But having piped music doesn't help with the budget and the quality of food I've bought from this store was the same as the ones from companies who pay millions of dollars for advertising. It keeps cost down not to pay a grocery bagger. I think you'd have to decide for yourself if it's more important to you to have these things or if you want to save money so you can do other really fun extracurricular stuff for yourself or your family, or to just feel good that you've made wise decisions about where you spend. read more

As a transplant, it's always good to see a piece of home in NYC. Aldi is consistently, hands-down, the best place to get my basic groceries. It's always clean, well-lit, and well-stocked. I go at least twice a month and find that the food is of better quality than what I find in a C-Town, Associated, or Fine Fare. read more

Tired of people in Manhattan complaining about prices but then being food snobs about going to Aldi. For staples like milk, bread, eggs, cheese, pasta sauce, crackers, juice this place really hits the spot. Like most lower end supermarkets they often fill the aisles with lots of junk. Check labels for sugar but on the whole if you are savvy this is excellent place for yoghurts under 50c - french bread - foreign cheeses - ground beef - bags of frozen berries all dirt cheap for the city etc etc. read more

Aldis is like a mini supermarket full with generic brand food for low prices. They also have a selection of home goods and toys, as well as a small baby selection with $ 5 pampers, baby wash ect. While the prices are amazing compare to other places, you have to buy or bring your own bags, you also must pay 25cents for your shopping cart which you get back at the end of your shopping. As for customer service defiantly not the best, no ones ever really around to help and there's always either one or two slow cashiers. Who are ghetto just like the black security guard watched me pay for my groceries then he asked me with the only voice to you take out my receipt, while I had heavy bags in my hands. I used to like shopping here a lot, the products are definitely hit or miss but I would come here mostly for the produce deals and pantry items which have mostly been good. The lunch meat is usually pretty bad so I definitely wouldn't recommend buying that. A lot of the specialty foods are gimmicky I think so definitely avoid those. The cashiers leave a lot to be desired. I do not want to shop here anymore after a recent experience. I came into the store with one re-usable shopping bag (as I often do), grabbed a few things and proceeded to check out. Most of the time I don't need a cart since I'm only buying a few items for me and my husband. The cashier "Carrie" was so rude to me. I asked her to check the price on a bag of cherries and she scoffed when I said I wasn't gonna take them. They were over $10! It was out of my budget and I was nice about it, so what's the deal? As she scanned each of my items, she was putting them in a cart. I had maybe 10 smaller items. After I paid, not even two seconds, she started putting the items from the man behind me into this same cart, right next to my groceries. Puzzled, I just said "Oh?" and she said "Yeah you better hurry up and grab your stuff, its not my problem that you didn't get a cart." So I had to shove all my stuff in my bag really quick and leave. I get that the cashiers are usually in a hurry but I don't see why I couldn't have taken the cart for a few minutes to put my items back in the bag and then return it to her. She didn't need to talk to me like a child. It's a shame since I've been a shopper here for several years. Being treated like an inconvenience is so off putting it makes me not want to come back. read more

First time shopping here and I really liked it. Came here before going to Costco to get some things I didn't need in bulk and I was surprised at my $20 bill cause of the amount of things I bought. There is a good selection of dairy, produce, and breads which is why I go there. Most of the brands there I have never heard of before, but I'm not a brand snob. As long as it tastes good to me then it's a great deal. One star was knocked off because of the no credit card policy (cash, debit, or ebt only). To save even more cents, bring your own bags or else you have to pay for the bags in the store. read more

The store itself is great! Good quality, unbeatable prices. My only complaints are there are never enough cash registers open and the rudeness of some of the staff. Employee with "DIAMOND" on her name tag is one of the nastiest, rudest & racist person ever! It is beyond me why they keep this person in their employ! I must say that 85% of the staff very nice , but the several rude employees often make shopping here very unpleasant. I would give it a much higher rating if staff were better. Compared to Target next door, food here is much more affordable. Mostly everything is off brand, but I have not been disappointed by the quality. so I went to Aldi's today. it seem like everybody got their foodstamps. because there was nothing on the shelf. I'm vegan I so I had to read every ingredients. the cashier seemed annoyed with her lazy ass . I think it's tacky to have someone sit down at a cash register all day. another girl I asked about the citrus juicer explain the sales are different each week. Aldi has a lot to learn about customer service. Price means nothing when unnecessary inconvenience is stupidly applied to company policy. Remodeling a store is usually a good thing but at Aldi. I already go out of my way to shop the Middletown, Ct store. So as it was closed Aldi gave out $5.00 coupons to shop in other stores that were further away. The coupons were only good in 2 locations both of which were further away than the next closest store from my location. The coupon also had weekly expiration dates and minimum on spending. So here is the deal Aldi I'm already going out of my way to shop at your store. If you have a coupon make it good at all your stores. So I can use it where it's good for me. If it is a temp situation make it good for the entire time so I can shop at my convenience. Price will only get you so far. joe d read more

While shopping with a close friend in New Jersey, we stopped by Alidi on route 1/9 Linden Plaza. I was amazed at the prices! So every chance I got, I went there. When they opened on uptown. I was floored. I went opening day and every chance I get I go there to shop. Only once in a while you can find name brand products. The can food are the best and cheap. The bag of chicken parts once were 5.99 now they up to 9.99. Still three dollars cheaper than regular grocery store. Now the part that is a killer is you need to bring a quarter or the shopping cart and your own bags. Even though you can find a empty box or two. Just buy the bags and keep reusing them. Aldi's is the best grocery bargain in Manhattan unless you're addicted to name brands, or unless you aren't prepared with bags and cash (or debit). Low prices are the big draw. I've found the employees helpful and polite, and although so far I've never had a quarter handy to borrow a cart, there's a shelf near the registers convenient for packing the bags you brought with you. Aldi's temporary markdowns are great but few, and they do post weekly specials on their website. It's surprising that a few items are actually more expensive than at their sibling Trader Joe's (e.g., roasted sunflower seeds, frozen turkey meatballs). As carefully as they keep track of inventory electronically, you'd think that no products would go for weeks missing from the shelves, but their delicious ersatz Triscuits (only $1.25) are frequently unavailable. I always buy toilet paper, bouillon cubes, yogurt, and cheese at Aldi's. I'd buy milk and canned goods too if they weren't so heavy to get home without a car. This brings me to my biggest complaint which is not Aldi's fault but is their problem since it limits my spending there: East River Plaza's location makes it impossible to get there from the eastside and back downtown on a free MTA transfer without carrying heavy groceries a long way, because it's 0.47 miles back to a 3rd Ave bus, and the nearest subway station is nearly a mile away, if you take the M15 uptown. I hope they flourish--Best Buy in that shopping center has already shut down. read more
