I really, really wanted to like Fresh Direct and support a local LIC business, and it was neat to get groceries delivered to me for a change, but after today I am going to try out Peapod instead. There are many reasons why.
1. Too pricey. It seems like everyone already knows that about FreshDirect, so I don't have to go into too much detail on that front. When I shop for groceries, I don't mind going for one or two premium priced items if they're what I really want, but on FreshDirect, nearly everything comes at a premium price, and there just aren't enough options for shoppers seeking discounts.
2. In the first delivery to me a few weeks ago, they delivered two pounds of pecans instead of two pounds of almonds. No big deal. I called and asked for a redelivery. They came again and gave me pecans again. Finally on the third try, I got almonds. Although the phone representatives I spoke to were kind, and the delivery men were fine, it was inconvenient and annoying to keep calling and scheduling new delivery times.
3. #1-2 were not dealbreakers for me. I could deal with the high prices and the repeated delivery goofs. But then came the straw that broke the camel's back and soured me on the whole experience. On Friday night, in the aftermath of the big snowstorm, I had my delivery scheduled for between 8-10pm. FreshDirect specifically sent emails saying they were making best efforts to get deliveries in on time, but not to be too surprised if a delivery would be late.
So even though they made it sound like they'd possibly be late, I did my part, making sure I got home a little before 8pm to accept the delivery. At that point, my roommate let me know the delivery had already come 20-30 minutes earlier. It was embarrassing because I had not even told him a delivery was coming, and he ended up putting my frozen foods and items requiring refrigeration in the freezer and fridge for me. I also felt a little bad because the delivery guy had delivered in the wind and snow and wasn't tipped, because my roommate had nothing to give him. But then again, he came about 45 minutes before the scheduled time slot, when there was no reason to even assume that I would be home.
As a member of the modern era, I vented my frustration about this experience on Twitter, and the next day a FreshDirect representative gave me a call and left a message. I actually didn't get around to calling him back until today. As it turned out, it would have been better if I just hadn't called back and left it where it was.
He gave me one of the least sincere apologies I've ever been given and sounded annoyed at having to give it. It seemed more like he was accusing me of something than apologizing. He told me he got called at home about it over the weekend because I was making a fuss on the internet. In a nonplused tone: "You must have really been upset if you went on social media," after which I had to feel defensive. He said that twice. As though people don't just write about anything that happens to them on Twitter, and they only login to write about things they're really piping mad about. He didn't sound concerned for me; he made it sound like I was a troublemaker.
It's not like I have a million followers on Twitter who are now going to boycott FreshDirect because I said they were terrible and awful. I even said in one of my Tweets "It's not a huge deal." All my initial -- evidently incendiary -- Tweet said was "@FreshDirect delivery guy showed up 20-30 minutes early and delivered to my roommate. Not cool, Fresh Direct. Naturally the guy got no tip."
So basically, FreshDirect messes up, then their guy calls me and makes it sound like I'm the one in the wrong.
He lets me know that the delivery guy was interviewed and reported that my roommate said it would be no problem to accept the delivery himself. Which yeah, what else is my roommate going to say if the delivery guy is downstairs with my food? I wanted to accept the delivery myself and not interrupt his Friday night, and put things away myself, and make sure the delivery guy felt appreciated for having worked in a blizzard.
I was going to keep ordering from FreshDirect even after the early delivery, the steep prices, and the experience with the mixed up nuts. Ironically, the top reason for my 1-star review and my desire to no longer give them business is the attitude of the guy who called me to apologize. read more
