Every time I drive to Kettle Cove I pass Fresh Pickins, and only recently did I learn they have a u-pick option! I've seen their beautiful flowers all over town and have even bought some before, but once I found out about the pick-your-own option I knew I had to try it this summer. I'm glad I did. It turned out to be such a quintessential Maine summer moment.
We arrived, parked easily on the grass, and realized we were the only ones there. I guess the flowers are popular but the u-pick option isn't for everyone. A young woman greeted us (the owner, I assume?) and gave us the rundown: $28 for a bouquet, fit as many flowers as your heart desires, and they provide the shears and mason jar. There are two fields and you can pick from either or both. At $28, that's a reasonable deal given what flowers cost these days. My husband and I spent a good 45 minutes making our way through the fields picking the most beautiful flowers. Every color, dozens of varieties, and the zinnias were absolutely gorgeous. We packed our mason jar to the brim and had such a lovely time.
One note: these are flowers in the wild, so expect bees, butterflies, small spiders, and other insects. I'd also recommend wearing pants since thorns are common. read more
