What a great place! We stopped here to see what it was all about. We had ice cream, we saw cows,…read moreand we paid to go into the area where there was lots of animals. We even fed goats and deer. We pet babies, we loved seeing the different birds. There were peacocks! It was fun, relaxing, cool in the shade. The food part is big enough to eat and relax. Ice cream was delicious. I would go back! People that worked there were really nice too.

You scream. I…read morescream. We all scream... for site made ice cream on a working Maine dairy farm ! This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV

It's been a decade plus since my original review, so I thought I'd update it!…read more Since then the PFM on Wednesdays is now *also* located in the picturesque (and much easier to park in) Deering Oaks from mid April to late November, 7am to 1pm (while the winter market takes place only on Saturdays inside on Stevens Ave from early December to early April, 9am to 1pm). From the Portland Farmers Market: " Featuring over 30+ Maine farmers. From artichokes to zucchini, if you can grow it here, you'll probably find it IN season and fresh! Also eggs, meat, cheese, milk, ferments, flowers, fibers, honey, and more! Farm products exclusively." Yes, it is all things local in beautiful abundance! I like that many of the vendors are the same from Saturday to Wednesday; but there's just something slightly more lowkey about the Wednesday market. It's a smaller crowd, a more relaxed vibe, the vendors are unhurried and have more space to chat, and it seems like more locals are intentionally out to shop/support their local farmer. I usually know exactly what I want when I come here, but it's nice to be able to slow down and take time to really look around without being bumped into/having to worry about something selling out.

Just look at that gorgeous haul from today's farmers' market here in Portland! Cute tiny tomatoes…read moreand big juicy ones of different colors and varieties; eggplants; cabbage; garlic and shallots, and something called torpedo onions; tons of peppers, both to eat raw in salads and cook with (check out those purple ones!); super-fresh summer corn; herbs and flowers; dill pickles. I also snagged some blueberries and radish microgreens. I'll be eating verrrryyyyy well for the next several days, that's for sure. While you'll find a larger selection at the bigger Saturday market, when it's peak produce season like it is now the tables will be overflowing with goodness on Wednesdays, too. And it's just a bit mellower, and always easy to find a place to park. All of the vendors are happy to talk with you about what they're selling and I enjoy that as much as everything I bring home! Practicalities: bring cash, because even though several vendors do take cards, not all of them do and there's usually a $10 minimum. Plus, cash enables you to spend a few bucks at several different tables if you want to (I mean, why not try a tomato or two from each?). And bring your tote bags to load up, to save on having to use any plastic or paper (which most vendors do have in some form). Most of all, just enjoy strolling through the park and seeing all the bounty on offer, and know you're supporting Maine farmers by buying local.

SOOOOO. CONVENIENT!!! SOOOOOOO PROFESSIONAL!!!! BEST SERVICE EVER!!!…read more 100% Recommend!!! I asked a ton of people for recommendations and Harbor Fish Market was hands down the #1 recommendation. It's apparently the go-to-spot for all your fresh seafood needs... for all locals and tourists in and around Portland, ME. It's located in the middle of the busy downtown waterfront district. They have dedicated parking spots for customers. I called while driving from Brunswick to the airport... asked to have 6 "heavy" live lobsters boxed up for travel as carry-on for my flight. The call lasted about 4 minutes... I arrived about 30 min later... walked in... box was waiting for me and I walked out to my car parked directly in front of the door. WOWOWOW!!! If I had more time or lived locally I would be there weekly to pick up some fresh seafood... there were so many options and the place was super clean and everything looked fresh. They also have an easy to use website to order local pickup or if you need something shipped to you. I flew my buddy's home with me... everyone from the TSA to Flight attendants knew exactly what was in the box and only concern was if I wanted to give them one of my "lobstas" ... my family had a delicious lobster feast that evening. https://harborfish.com

I actually thought it was a homeless place for people to get food cheap, until I got inside and realized it was Farms from the local area that bring your food so people can buy it.. If you're a Mainer, you know it's a must to take advantage of the few months of good weather we are blessed with out of the entire year! I went to the brews and tunes event on Saturday and relaxed to amazing music on the lawn while eating vegetarian pierogi I bought from the food truck (picture attached)! I'd never been before so we walked into the gift shop and got a helpful rundown on how it all works from a woman working there. After perusing the gift shop and ordering a wreath to be made, we rode in the gator up the hill to pick out a tree. A friendly guy named Sam helped saw the tree down and dragged it back to the gator for us so we could ride back to the front of the farm and check out. After getting our beautiful wreath, checking out and having our tree wrapped in netting, another friendly guy helped carry it to the car for us. It was not until we got to the car that he mentioned he can't tie it to the car for us because it's a liability to the owner (apparently if the tree flies off our car and hits another one, the owner believes he is liable and is very strict about not letting his employees help tie trees to cars). As two women, one with a baby strapped to them, it would have been very helpful for someone to explain this BEFORE we got to the car. We encountered maybe 6 employees, none who explained this important detail. We ended up figuring it out and made it home safely with our tree but that was pretty frustrating. Overall, this is a great place to come get a tree...just be prepared to tie it to your own car!
