There are a number of eager employees to help get your tree ready to take home and loaded, too. Inside, you'll find employees who will help you design custom wreaths,too. In the market, there is a well stocked fish counter and lobsterpound, too. Aside from that, there are fresh veggies and a huge stock of fresh baked goodies. The employees were all super nice, too. This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV

It was one…read moreof the most humid and hot days in Maine history I'm going to say Mother Nature didn't get my memo, but the use of the farm houses to prepare made a huge difference. We had a tent for our catered meal, dancing in the barn and our ceremony was in the field. Stacy was helpful and reassuring the whole time. She gave us names of local venders, caterers (we used Lori Gross Kinkade who went above and beyond!). She used all the pictures and flowers I told her I loved in such beautiful, creative and organic arrangements. I joked afterwards with my husband that of course a midwife turned farmer would be able to handle me being a high maintenance bride, she's handled higher pressure situations before! We had the wedding we dreamed of and highly recommend Broadturn Farm.

We make a lot of fresh pasta at home, and they always have the freshest ingredients to take our recipe to the next level. For example, many Italian recipes call for guanciale (Italian cured pork), and we could never find it locally until we visited The Cheese Iron. We had to settle for pancetta until we found this gem of a spot. Their focaccia and baguettes are delicious, and their cheeses are always fresh. They also are the only place we've seen locally that carries Lioni Latticini burrata, which is, without a doubt, the best burrata we've ever tried. We stopped buying commercial burrata altogether after trying that brand. Plus, their customer service is unmatched -- everyone is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Those little (and big!) elements continue to bring us back to The Cheese Iron. I'm so, so happy The Cheese Iron exists in Scarborough.

They had a gazillion pumpkins and all different types of gourds this time of year, but at the front of each of the greenhouses were a variety of plants from small succulents to giant birds of paradise. Outside there was a selection of pots, but like most places they were out of terra cotta pots. Lots of mums and fall arrangements, and their farm market had a really nice selection of wine, produce, and dairy products. Parking was painless and checking out was easy enough. I'd love to come back here in the spring when things are ramping up.
