I'll agree that the donuts are fresh here, but they are greasy. I ordered a boston creme - the custard was thick and tasty, but the bottom of the donut was greasy. The apple fritter looks good, but the grease factor also applies to this - the entire fritter was soak in oil it seemed, I didn't really want to finish it. When it comes to the croissants it doesn't specify whether you have to choose between the meats (ham,sausage,bacon) or if it comes that way all together. But she very nearly stuck me with a rusty shank when I unwittingly called a meat-containing klobasnek a kolache. I had to learn from Jennifer the Terrible the hard way, so let me save you the trouble, and the fear of being stabbed to death by an ill-tempered Czech, by giving you these few simple pointers: 1) Kolache is pronounced "KO-lach," and not "ko-LA-chee." The "E" is silent and the first syllable, rather than the second, is stressed. 2) Kolaches are a somewhat circular pastry with a dollop of fruit or cheese in the middle. 3) If the delightful breakfast food you are holding in your hand is constructed of dough wrapped around some savory meat, like sausage, then it is called a klobasnek, not a kolache. Klobasnek is pronounced "klow-BAAS-neck." 4) Any deviation from these cardinal Czech rules will result in the perpetrator either being death-marched to a bleak gulag deep in the Siberian wilds or a slow, painful, eviscerating death at the hands of a bloody descendent of Vlad the Impaler. I opted to try a sausage and jalapeño KLOBASNEK and an apple fritter, while my dainty, lovely lady got a blueberry-iced donut. My fiancee enjoyed her soft, fresh, and flavorful donut. My klobasnek was warm and very obviously fresh made that morning. My only complaint with the klobasnek is that I could hardly taste the jalapeño and it was, therefore, a little plain for my taste. IMO, Shipley Donuts' klobasnek is better. My fresh apple fritter was of a generous size and fairly tasty, but lacking in apple filling and overall flavor. More cinnamon, rather than sugar, and more bits of apple in the filling would have gone a long way. If you like apple fritters, once again Shipley Donuts is the place to go in town. Overall, Fresh Donuts is an acceptable choice if you are close to the Austin Highway area. However, with a few small tweaks to their recipes, I think that this place could be a real hit. read more

We popped in for an early morning treat. We originally started in the drive thru but got a peek of the donuts thru the window, so we hopped out and went in. They have a huge selection of tasty treats like fritters, kolaches yeast and cake donuts etc. my husband chose a cinnamon roll and the associate offered to pop it into the microwave so it was nice and warm for him. They're fairly priced and were particularly fresh. Save the cinnamon roll. I don't know that it was cold beforehand, but she was sweet enough to heat up up anyway. We also had a glazed twist and a lemon filled donut. The twist was very light but not as sweet as they typically are. The lemon filled donut was tasty, but all of the filling was in the back of it. I had a giant jalapeño sausage and cheese kolache. Let me just say, not only was it the size of a hotdog and superb in every way to any other kolache I have ever had. I had a donut after and I thought that it would be less tasty than the kolache but it was again the best sugar donut I've ever had. The texture was similar in taste to a cake donut. Probably better than Shipleys, at least the glazed, and they pack it into a full sized box, which I'm a fan of. I thought the glazed were actually the highlight - the cake donuts were the same as every other cake donut I've ever had, but the wife loved the cinamman glazed she had. Taking a star off because the danish we split wasn't very good - the filling was awesome but the crust was chewy and not very good. Overall, definitely worth a trip (especially if you're close) and worth driving past Shipley's if you're in the mood for donuts. If you want a pastry I'd go to Shipley's. read more

Tried this place because my husband doesn't like Shipley's, which I love! He thinks the glazed are too doughy. He was very impressed with the interior. However, the glazed are even more doughy than Shipley's. I couldn't eat the apple fritter because it was so incredibly greasy. Just touching it, grease oozed from the dough. He didn't care for the smoked sausage kolaches either. Apparently many people love this place and I'm glad! Just leaving this review for those who might be looking for an airy fluffy donut. Let me start by saying the donuts are good. Fresh, good sized, overall really tasty. The reason for the 4 stars is because upon paying for the mixed dozen I was over charged. When I tried to explain to the cashier he said he didnt understand english or at least what I was saying. I don't know how, but a cinnamon roll was changed for another donut. After reading the awesome reviews, I couldn't wait to munch these doughnuts! Unfortunately, I have a mixed reaction to my treats. I was so excited to see they actually had fruit kolaches (my fave!), but as another reviewer previously said, the pastries are not the best; the filling was just ok and the dough was not very soft like I prefer. I also ordered a sugar cake doughnut that was a bit dry, but hopefully this was just due to the fact that I didn't arrive early for my doughnuts, so I got the bottom of the barrel. The best part of my order was, by far, the apple fritter, my personal go-to doughnut!
