I've been coming to The French Press for a long time now, and it's usually one of my favorite spots. Most of the time, everything is great, but lately, I've noticed it can be a bit of a hit or miss--I either have a wonderful experience or a really tough one. Why I keep coming back: Their food is genuinely delicious. They have really good sandwiches and so many great options if you're hungry. Also, a little insider tip: if you're feeling under the weather and want something better than a Starbucks Medicine Ball, order the Remedy Tea. It is so soothing and I highly recommend it! My recent experience: On my last visit, things felt a bit off. The staff seemed really rushed--they actually started making our drinks while we were still in the middle of ordering. Because of the rush, they missed my milk modification and the drink ended up being way too sweet, to the point where I couldn't really drink it. What saddened me most was that the cashier was pretty rude and dismissive toward us. We actually felt so uncomfortable that we didn't even want to ask for a remake, so we just headed out. I truly love the menu here and the vibe when it's "on," but I really hope the service gets back to that friendly, welcoming energy I fell in love with. read more

I am a regular at this shop and usually love coming here; they have the most adorable decor and furniture. My recent experiences have been a bit disappointing. In February, I was helped by a newer gentleman at the register who didn't greet us and seemed very impatient while we looked at the seasonal menu. When we ordered a seasonal drink by name, he sighed and rudely turned the menu around to read it himself. He didn't ask about milk preferences and just seemed annoyed to be there. To make matters worse, the drinks that day were overly sweet with almost no coffee flavor. I have been back twice since then, but I find myself visiting less often to avoid that specific interaction. It is a shame because there is another worker there with curly hair who is the complete opposite. She is kind and always has great recommendations. I love some good honey and I really enjoyed my latte. Kids food options are few but a good selection a little one can choose from. Gluten free bread options for those who have an allergy to gluten. Stopped in for a quick drink while in the area. Hot chocolate my daughters and one of their specialty lattes for my wife. All were happy. Only downsides were a lack of seating space given the small location and they were out of all the gluten free options. Even out of gluten free toast for sandwiches. Idk if its just because I came in before work at 9am on a Saturday and the whole state was still sleeping but the customer service was phenomenal; as someone who's been working customer service for going on 5 years at this point. I ordered through doordash for a coupon and got a latte and burrito for $10! Added a bagel because f it at that price point (in this economy!) the burrito was so good I was kicking 80 on the freeway, spilling it on myself but "This was so worth it" . Coffee is really good, I'm awake and I don't need to . I regularly drink coffee and no shot was needed. Haven't tried the bagel yet but its been dancing in my nose until I got here. I found this coffee shop as a halfway point to meet with my manager since we both work remotely. When we arrived, the place was a bit busy, but a kind couple made space for us at the front table with stool seating. The interior decor was nice and inviting. I tried one of the January special drinks, which was delicious, along with a chocolate croissant. My manager opted for tea and a bagel. Unfortunately, when her drink was delivered, the server accidentally spilled a good portion on my arm, pants, and scarf. They quickly grabbed a cloth to clean the table but then used the same cloth to dab the tea off me, which felt a bit careless. Despite staying for several hours and ordering a second round of drinks and dessert, there was no acknowledgment or apology beyond that moment--no offer of a replacement drink or any gesture of goodwill. Unfortunately, my scarf ended up stained. While the coffee and ambiance were great, the lack of customer service in handling the spill left a disappointing impression. read more

This was our second visit, and unfortunately it was very disappointing. The shop felt overcrowded for such a small space, with too many people behind the counter and a group of ladies congregating, which made the experience feel chaotic rather than welcoming. I ordered a sugar-free latte, and honestly, it was the worst latte I've ever had. It tasted like an overly thick, syrupy drink with almost no coffee flavor at all -- overwhelmingly sweet despite being sugar-free. I rarely return drinks, but it was undrinkable, so I asked if I could swap it for a drip coffee with half-and-half. The replacement drip coffee was filled to the brim with very minimal half-and-half and was mediocre at best. There was also no conversation about the price difference between a latte and a drip coffee. My husband ordered a drip coffee as well, and while the two coffees were different sizes, the cups throughout the shop all seem to be different shapes and volumes, which made us question whether you're really getting the size you're paying for. Food was equally disappointing. I ordered a blueberry bagel that was dry and tasted almost stale. My husband ordered the breakfast burrito, which was soggy and overly wet -- likely from an excessive amount of salsa. To top it off, the bar area by the window was visibly dirty. We ended up grabbing a napkin and cleaning it ourselves. Neither of us finished our drinks, and overall the experience felt careless and underwhelming. Sadly, we don't plan on returning. read more

I really really want this to be my go-to spot. The coffee/espresso drinks are very delicious without me having to make any modifications. The food offerings are yummy too. They prepare some selected items fresh when ordered. The servers are very nice. The ambiance is a little magical. The only reason why I cannot make this my go to spot really doesn't have to do with the food or coffee. It's the over the top wild and borderline uncomfortable conversations that I have experienced by the patrons. I really don't need to hear all that when I'm getting my coffee. In a way, I'm happy to hear people so comfortable in the setting and feeling free in their community to express themselves, but they are in public and truly most people not involved directly in their lives dont want to hear what should otherwise be a private conversation out in public. I overlooked this type of conversation the first and second time and even third time I came in, but by the 5th time, I was like I think this is just how it is here. I will return in the future but will get my items to go, and probably won't bring my mom here. read more

Adorable new coffee spot in La Verne - packed full of French chic decor - awesome vibes for relaxing with one of their fabulous coffees! Staff are super friendly, prices are good, and the pastries are also fantastic! I stopped by to refuel after a morning of hiking nearby at Bonelli and their treats really hit the spot! They offer a lot of choices when it comes to coffee and latte flavors - and one of the owners (Darren I believe) was SO helpful - he was very interested in what my go-to fave flavors were and did a great job making recommendations. He recommended I try their rose latte with vanilla - not something I'd ever had before - and it was such an incredible combination!! Very complementary flavors and their rose flavor was excellent - one of the best I've had - I'll definitely be getting that again! They have a pastry case and displays at the register and they all look and sound so delicious I just couldn't resist - I took home a spinach and feta pastry as well as an apple and goat cheese pastry and WOW!! They were amazing!! As I was waiting for my latte, I also got to chat to the other half of the owner-team, Sandra, and she is super sweet! All in all just so welcoming and the vibes really beckon you to sit and chat a while haha! Their website says they really try to use small, locally owned vendors which I thought is pretty cool. They're located on the side of a busy shopping center but don't have a very obvious sign. I ended up circling a little bit til I found them - they're next to Chubby's ice cream shop. What an amazing first visit by Darren, his wife, and their staff. Upon walking in, I was welcomed and asked how I was doing. Great start. I knew I wanted an iced latte with oat milk, and I wanted to try the lavender syrup. Darren suggested adding a little vanilla to the lavender to balance out the taste. I also had a warmed up chocolate croissant that also tasted really good. This place has been open about four weeks, and Darren and I had a brief and pleasant conversation on his wife's inspiration behind opening this bar. It was empty in the afternoon, but I was immediately greeted by friendly staff. I ordered off their seasonal menu and had the muerte mocha. They have milk alternatives so lactose intolerant folks you'll be okay! I still opted for whipped cream and they topped it with Halloween sprinkles too I also ordered a pastry I think it was a matcha and date scone. Opportunities for Improvement: - I asked the cashier if I can pay via Apple Pay and she didn't know if this was an option from the get go, so she had to ask another employee. I just ended up taking out my wallet/credit card - no biggie but would be nice if all employees, especially the cashier, is knowledgeable on all of the different payment options provided. - I also asked the cashier for a copy of the receipt, who doesn't seem to be knowledgeable on how to print/re-print a receipt. Would be great to train all employees, especially the cashier, on how to perform this task as well. No biggie but I personally like to keep copies of my receipts. Interior: Beautiful, clean, and magical! A great place to hang out and chat away + studying. One of the employees went out of her way and handed my drink over while I was waiting and sitting down. Brand new coffee shop. Very friendly owner. A good variety of coffee as well as seasonal specialties and breakfast items + soup and salads/sandwiches. We came in for breakfast and coffee. I ordered a pour over with dark roast beans, which is what I was told they usually use. My mom had a lavender oat latte with a splash of vanilla. Both beverages were great. We also ordered a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese and the La Verne artisan bread topped with goat cheese, lavender, and honey. The La Verne artisan bread was nice and light, if maybe a tad heavy-handed with the honey. Though sweetness is subjective, right? Others might find it perfect as-is. I could have used just a drizzle and have the option for more honey on the side. The everything bagel was fine except it was presented untoasted, so we had this redone. The owner was very nice about taking it back. Whether our request for toast was inadvertently omitted on the ticket or the kitchen staff forgot, who knows. It was redone to my mom's liking. I'm docking off a star here due to the fact that when my mom's bagel plate was taken away, the owner had just finished petting another customer's dog. She went from petting the dog with her bare hands to touching my mom's plate. Sure, my mom was getting a new bagel, but the question of sanitation and cleanliness still stands. We love dogs and have nothing against them, but no working staff should be petting any animals and immediately proceed to touching any customers' food. Just an observation. My mom nearly gagged having witnessed this. We also observed the kitchen staff in the back while handling food, was not wearing gloves either. With regards to the ambiance, it is bright and airy. I think it's supposed to be French-country inspired. My only suggestion is to remove the wooden bench (uncomfortable) and the individual lounge chairs and put in 2-top or 4-top tables instead. Otherwise, the cafe looks cluttered, almost like a yard sale of random furniture. The bar table and stools are fine. Forgo Starbucks and support local! read more

Both the server and I checked the lid because it was filled to the brim. When I got home holding the coffee gingerly, the lid came off and much of the coffee burned my hand. I've been here before and it's even better the second time around. I asked for their version of a vanilla sweet cream cold brew and honestly, it was pretty good! SOOOOOO much to love about this place! It's brightly lit, with enough natural light coming through the front to keep it from feeling artificial. The only thing it needs is one of those electric fireplace heaters and then it would be PERFECTION. The staff are friendly and the owner, Sandra, is a sweetheart. The drinks and food are delicious. Make sure to get in before 11am to snag a breakfast burrito. I'm so grateful that they didn't put too much salsa in it for wimps like me. It was SO tasty, but I've got a sensitive stomach, so next time I'll ask for it on the side so I don't pay for it later, haha. I had the kouign-amann (I think they call it a "crown pastry"), which hit the spot with some tea. The La Verne toast w/goat cheese and lavender was lovely (although it was a bit skimpy with the cheese and lavender compared to others I've had) and complemented a chai latte. I especially appreciate that they don't price gouge you for alternative milks! I mean really, $1 for a squirt of oat milk that for a few bucks more, I can buy a carton of?!? They seem to care more about the customer's needs here than appearing snooty or milking (see what I did there? LOL) you for every dime they can get out of you. They even have an awesome faux gate in the back for you to bring in your love locks like the Pont des Arts bridge in Paris--so creative! The only caution I'd put forth is that this is an ULTRA dog-friendly shop. Depending on your needs, this could be a major plus. But if you're allergic or squeamish about dogs being in the same space as where you eat and drink, it could be a turnoff. That said, dogs are not always here, so YMMV.
