Lots of variety! A bit pricey, but for the big Bend area it is a great place to get anything last minute. You might have forgotten or to grab a quick bite to eat on your way out of the park. Customer service was awesome.! read more

One of the last places to stock up on groceries before heading into Big Bend National Park! I was glad we stopped in Marathon because it's got a lot of cool stuff on its "main st" style strip, and while the French Company Grocer isn't fancy, it is surprisingly well-stocked with pretty much anything you could think of wanting to bring with you while you're camping or "glamping" in this beautiful part of Texas! The staff were also super nice and helpful, and we couldn't resist getting some of their homemade cookies that were absolutely delicious. If they have the cherry cookies while you're there, grab one! Heck, grab five and enjoy one while you're strolling down the strip of unique shops, just make sure you finish before you head into the little art gallery and gift shop, which is also a must-see! read more

When you are in need of the basics you can probably get it here. However, it is definitely a dive. I highly recommend stocking up before you leave for Big Bend. read more

Small grocer near the Gage Hotel. It may be small, but it is packed wall to wall with items. An absolute must-try is the hummus! Actually all of the pre-made food items are wonderful. I've heard some people bark about the price, but 1, you're in West Texas and things just cost more here. And 2, it is 100% worth the price. I don't say that often. But at The French, they have quality food. read more

A well stocked grocery store with all the essentials and more. We stopped on two separate occasions. The first we made it to their burger night on Friday, and it was fantastic. An excellent burger, with delicious housemade potato chip, they were the best! The second on a Sunday where we picked up a sandwich for a quick bite before we hit the road again. Both occasions we picked up a bottle of wine as a gift to friends, they have a really nice wine selection and we were pleased with our choices. A great jumping off point for Big Bend adventures, highly recommend to stop. read more

The French Co. Grocer - Grocery Near Me - Marathon, Texas

I encountered this store when I was required o stay in Marathon for a few days, during what was a long, hard trans-US bicycle tour. From the get go, I was struck by how important this establishment is to the local community. Sam, who owns the place, appears to be working hard to ensure that it continues to be an important centrepiece in Marathon. He has committed people as part of his team and it is clear that the store serves a wider social purpose. Staff were courteous and friendly on the occasions I visited. Danielle offered to make me a vegetarian sandwich and also promoted their Burger night with live music, which was taking place that night. She was very accommodating and explained that more social activities take place there, including a social gathering on Sundays, featuring local musicians. At a time when rural communities in the US struggle to access fresh produce, it's clear that this store is going to great lengths to offer quality and choice for local people. I like this place, its people and the work they do. Thanks for doing a great job! read more

We loved this grocery - we stopped during our trip to Big Bend Texas. It was owned by a great guy. They had a clean organized store with a wonderful selection of all the basics and essentials. There were very good cooked / prepared foods for lunch and breakfast. If we are back in the area we are going back! read more

Sooooo cute! The staff is wonderful. Their prices are very fair & they have a great selection of healthy foods. We accidentally stumbled across this place & I am so glad we did. We also got lucky & got to crash a music night! read more

Small grocery located close to the Gage Hotel. The hot prepped food was picked over by the time we arrived for lunch, but excellent vegetarian burritos. Products are a tad pricey, but there's really not much around so it's what you would expect. read more

Our ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PLACE EVER!! We were fortunate enough to speak to the owners. Fresh food for my meat eaters and more importantly fresh food for my vegetarian. I love the options of items for my pack before we head into the mountains. read more

The French Co. Grocer - Grocery Near Me - Marathon, Texas

The place was massively over priced and the staff was not friendly at all. We felt like we were a nuissance and had to walk on egg shells to give them our money. But, it's the only option in town, so just know before you go. read more

Great place for souvenirs, grab-n-go foods, and all kinds of groceries and supplies! We enjoyed their selection of fruit, sandwiches, and tamales for several days of picnic lunches in Big Bend. They also have a great selection of canned coffee drinks and fizzy waters for the road, and it was great to browse from their selection of locally made souvenirs, too! read more

As expensive as would be expected for a remote store. Friendly people and staff is efficient.

It is what it is! This is our little community store. Some people call it the 'trip saver'. It is a neat little place, welcoming to all. No trip to Marathon is complete without visiting the French Grocer. You're Welcome! read more

A true oasis in the desert, this little store has everything you need and even some stuff you never knew you needed, with all the hospitality you'd hope for in a small town store. A staple to the local community and worth a stop for anyone passing through. Don't miss the best burgers in West Texas on Friday burger nights and the occasional treat of live music events at the French Co. You'll be glad you did. read more

When I last visited this store three years ago, it was a Sunday night and there was nothing going on. I didn't spend a lot of time inside the store back then to see everything they had to offer, but this time, however, I arrived at the store on a Friday night and they were out back grilling burgers and musicians were on a stage performing! I think they may do this sort of thing every Friday night, too. As such, I take back what I said in my previous review because this is not a typical tiny small-town grocery store after all! For instance, they sell homemade goodies here, like cookies, which were simply scrumdiliumcious. Wine? Yes, they have a lot of wine here. Racks and racks of wine, in fact. Homemade kombucha in a huge jar with a spout? Yes, that's here, too, but I'm not a big fan of kombucha. They gave me a sample of it and I just got to say that you should not listen to anything I have to say about kombucha because I don't think I'll ever like that stuff. They have camping and outdoor gear here as well, in case you forgot tent stakes, rope, or etc.. The price of most goods, however, is quite high. For instance, a six-pack of Miller Lite cost me over $10. I suppose they can get away with charging whatever they want here because there's no place else in town that I am aware of to purchase groceries. I have to wonder if the locals get a discount here or whatnot. In any case, there's not a whole lot to do in this town, so come on in and check this place out for yourself because it's actually a pretty cool convenience store. read more

We were staying locally after a day at Big Bend and although it was dinner time, we weren't really hungry enough for a full meal. We happened to stroll by The French Co Grocer and decided to have a look. We ended up eating a freshly made ham sandwich with a side of pasta salad which really hit the spot. It was so much fun to sit right there eating our dinner and watching customers come and go. It's such a small area everyone seems to know each other and it was a nice mix of locals and tourists. They seem to have everything both locals and tourists need including food, camping supplies and souvenirs. The French Grocer is a real gem In Marathon and so is the wonderful young woman at the register! read more

I am a believer of supporting small businesses. In this case it was not a good experience. Called in a pizza order and was told the time to pick it up. I approved at the designated time only to find my pizza had been sitting there long enough to be cold. The gal at the store did apologize in advance and offer to reheat it. Not good. You all can do better! read more

They serve delicious burgers on Friday evenings. The burger was juicy and tasty, and there was a nice atmosphere.

Came here from San Antonio for the hamburgers it was worth the trip!

It's cute and expensive but what else can you expect out of the only store in a 25 mile drive Definitely recommend just stopping in read more

Great selection of grocery items! They had several mainstream items that the superstore didn't carry at all. Pleasant and knowledgeable staff. it was a trip back in time ambiance wise, with just enough modern things (check out and refrigeration) to be a must stop. read more

This is the best lil grocery store in West Texas. What a tremendous surprise to find such a diverse selection of many different needs: food staples (much of which is gourmet), camping basics, hats, sunscreens, snacks. And the ranch meats. OMG. The ranch meats. The fresh baked cookies and pastries are decadent and there is lovely outdoor seating w/wifi. Please shop here as much as you can if you are visiting. This area took a hit w/Covid and while as a tourist I love to go here, this is a vital part of their community I'm sure. read more

Great breakfast and lunch burritos, delicious cookies and awesome service. Cute spot in the back to eat.

Stop here!! They have just what you need and things you didn't know you needed. Anything from healthy, earthy snacks, candies and chips, snacks, grocery items to cook a good meal, locally procured frozen meats, espresso, camping essentials and other fun camping products, fresh fruits and veggies, and a very friendly employee (shout out to Cale). It's not an actual French grocery store...French was the last name of the person who started the store. Fun community events like Burger Night on Friday evenings. I hear they also host live bands too but not sure when/what time of year. Cute, fun, and everything you'd need and way more in a little market in the middle of nowhere. Stop here and load up on drinks and snacks on the way to/from Big Bend. They also have ready to eat items like burritos, hummus, sandwiches and pastries just to name a few. Lots of grain free snacks available and vegan friendly items! read more

Walking into the French Grocer on a Friday night is like finding the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Burger night is truly is gift to the community and is the best hang in town. We were met with joyful people and real good food! The grocer itself has lots of neat treats and unusual finds too. The coffee and homemade croissants are also top notch (we had to come back the next morning!). All the people are welcoming and warm. We felt a sense of belonging here. This is a rare gem that you really can't afford to pass up. Thank you French Grocer! We love y'all!! read more

We stopped here on our way to Big Bend. The tacos were so incredible, but outdone by the people who ran the store. I would recommend stopping here on the way to BB to anyone who asks, one of the highlights of our trip. read more

Awesome burgers on Friday nights. Groovy vibe. Great selection for a small store and owner, Sam, is the best! A MUST visit in the Big Bend.

Great grocery and goods stop in Marathon! Do expect higher prices due to being out in the desert. With that being said, I'm so impressed with the different brands and variety of products in this store! They have coffee, deli and pre made food you can grab, too! The vegetarian and pork tamales were delicious! Unique beer and wine options as well! 10/10 recommend to grab your essentials. read more

Convenient location with a decent selection of things. Nothing fancy. Wine selection is ok but not great. Was glad to find the place around the corner from The Gage Hotel; however, the staff was not overly friendly, with the cashier telling the man in the little office to let her finish with the customer before he got mad and yelled at her. Won't be my first stop when I return. read more

I love this store. They have tons of healthy food for the glamper, camper or resident. There is rarely anything I need to go into Alpine for and can support a local family and small business. The new owner Sam had started a weekend taco brunch that is yummy! Sit outside safely and meet the locals while Frank cooks on the plancha and Sam gets you a mimosa! This little grocers is a total life saver! Not only do they cover the basics, but they have a nice selection of picnic stuff in case you're in the mood...which I was. AND, they carry a nice assortment of hiking supplies, which I desperately needed. Leave it to me to go on vacation with NO SOCKS. Hard to hike with no socks. And I bought some reasonably priced good-for-your-feet socks to boot. French's has some historic relevance to the area, and the sign is on loan from one of the local galleries...seems it is authentic to the original grocer in Marathon which was called--you guessed it--French's. In many ways they are the only game in town for sodas and what not, but they don't gouge or take advantage of the weary traveler. In the true spirit of Marathon they are a community gem. I love this little store not only because it bailed me out, but also because of the organic choices and interesting assortment of stuff I need! read more

The Good: :: it's a local business in marathon, tx. no supermarkets here, yay! :: it's a pretty old establishment that is still going strong :: they have all kinds of things you would ever need, from camping supplies to basic groceries :: they have pretty good hours of operation :: they have outdoor seating if you want to relax outside :: serves locals and tourists coming through :: prices for things are pretty fair The Bad: :: there is a $50 credit card minimum here. i can understand that, though, b/c it's a very tiny operation, and they would lose a lot of money off of tiny credit card transactions. i highly recommend you either come with a lot of cash to marathon or that you bring your bank card to get cash from the nearby ATM, which only charges a $1 fee per transaction. :: the girl that works here isn't the friendliest. she's not the owner, she's a girl that works there only. she is super duper grumpy. blech! The Ugly: :: none Would I go back? Definitely, and it's not just because they are the only game in town. Nothing adds to the charm of a small town more than a quaint little grocery store that everyone goes to. This place is IN. read more

This place seems to have a little bit of everything from fresh-baked goods to camping supplies and many things in between. The service was fast and friendly. sadly this was a huge disappointment! we had been there a couple of times before and have had the same experience. it is run by some young people that have no respect for their customers. Got a latte and a chorizo breakfast burrito, which was fantastic! Mix of egg, chorizo, and potatoes.

Sounds like some peeps were unhappy campers ...but that was not us! Everything from wine openers (I forgot ours), toothbrush (yup, forgot that too), flashlights, trail mix, local jams, gluten-free products (shout out to Nins) and more all topped off with free coffee. Get out of my face. They open early for those headed out to Big Bend and stay open late for weary travelers just making their way into town and realizing they have no way of getting inside the 3 wine bottles they brought for the trip. I had no issues using my debit card. Carry your debit card. Favorite touch: they have free photos of local Marathoners and locations to take if you so desire...awesome :) read more
