Very nice place. Clean. Friendly people. Would definitely recommend this store to anyone passing through Alpine.

After having lived here for a long while I've seen and worked for Porters, the store that closed ((owned and operated by the same people). The new store is a nice upgrade, the prices are higher but looking at the travel to bring Alpine what it needs and the cost of shipping etc... I understand the higher price. This store is a good place to shop if you're in need, if you don't like what's offered then there are other options Dollar Store, Blue Water, and you can even have things shipped! The managers and staff are helpful and kind, personally I am happy with Our Porters, and living in a small town it's a puzzle piece that helps me get by and get the items that I want and need. read more

This is not the first time, but hopefully the last. They either need to get with the ballgame and stop making excuse after excuse why they don't do something or stop selling chicken. It's 5:00 pm and they have nothing ready. The excuse was they were out of oil. A grocery store out of oil?!? read more

We were in Alpine for a few days and stopped into Porter's for a few items. We found that the store was clean and well organized. We were able to locate what we needed with no problem. The checker was cheerful and helpful. One unfortunate aspect of the store caused us to remove one star in our rating. In the women's restroom there was a sign with directions to place toilet paper into the trash can--instead of flushing it. The almost-full to the top trash can (with used TP) was evidence that people were following these directions. That was disgusting! read more

Life in a small town can have its charms but it also has its price. Living in the city we are spoiled by the convenience of a slew of top notch grocery stores, butchers, fish mongers and farmer's markets. Small towns lack the demand to support such a broad range of fresh offerings. Porter's manages to cover the basic needs of a household but shows compromise in the quality and variety of their offerings. Prices are a good bit higher than we generally see in Austin, which is surprising given that Austin has a much higher cost of living. I suspect that the lack of competition in the local market (Porter's owns the only two grocery stores in town and are separated by only a few blocks) allows monopolistic pricing to creep in. There are areas in which they do excel by small town standards. They can boast an impressive offering of beer and wine that can satisfy most palates but are a bit pricy. They have a great selection of coffees and specialty sauces and ingredients for traditional mexican dishes, and their employees retain the small town warmth and hospitality that makes small town living so attractive to city dwellers. Love it, or hate it, but get over it; its the only game in town. read more

Arrived in Alpine after ice storm. No power, no gas anywhere for miles. Stopped at Porters Thriftway for food and provisions. They had a generator for registers and some lights. People were using cell phone flashlights to view aisles. The staff was courteous and helpful. High prices but worth it in difficult times. read more

A disgrace for a grocery store in the US. I'm begging HEB and Walmart to open a store here and run them out of business! Meanwhile, I'm shopping at Bluewater Natural Foods which is actually competitive for a lot of products and MORE RELIABLE for quality read more

I see that you would rather go to Ft. Stockton or Walmart. Guess you haven't tried. Porters owns all of the grocery stores in the western half of the state unless they belong to a more well known chain. They own the stores in Andrews, Seminole, Kermit, etc.... You HAVE to go to a HEB, Albertsons, Walmart to avoid porters. I do have to say that the porters in alpine, that was Furrs, has the better meat market....but try the Sul Ross Meat Lab at the RAS building or go to Millers Meat Company in Stockton. The produce is better at the porters in Stockton, but everything else there is high....but not as high as Walmart! ALL of the Porters stores that I have been to have one thing in common.....very loud music that makes me want to leave. They are also great at making sure that you haven't taken everything home with you. read more

Expect VERY HIGH PRICES. This company owns every grocery store in the area and the mark up is astounding. Especially watch out for anything they pencil in as "Gourmet." Worth driving a couple of hours to save money, even with the cost of your fuel added in. They should be boycotted. I would prefer a Walmart. At least have some choices for the high prices. Lackluster, neglected produce. Items are often sold after the expiration dates. I might consider purchasing meat there if I win the lottery. read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible. They've got you by the short hairs and they know it. The other two reviewers are absolutely correct. I was in there on August 12 and they had their (lame) produce section completely torn apart and when I asked why they don't do this at night the produce person said "we don't work at night". High prices, poor selection and one of the two stores hasn't got the 'shampoo aisle'. It does however have an entire aisle in this poor little grocery store filled with soda pop. If you need toothpaste, etc. you have to go to their (other) store. Bring the HEB, Randalls, whatever. We deserve better than these lazy ^%$$$#$@^& people and their appaling markup. And don't even dream of buying meat there. read more
