I came here after my wedding to get my dress and my husband's tuxedo dry-cleaned, as well as the wedding dress preservation. The cleaning was smooth, with a quick turn-around. The preservation took a longer, but the end result was beautiful. I wanted my dress in a garment bag, not a box, which they happily took care of. When I picked up my dress, it was hanging on a plastic bust, stuffing under the skirt to show off the silhouette, the train delicately draped and tiered - all in a clear garment bag so I could admire my dress in all it's beautiful glory. Every time I open my closet and see my dress, I smile inside, as it reminds me of how fun that day was, as well as the bliss of being married to my best friend. read more

Excellent job cleaning my beaded french lace wedding dress with red wine and dirt stains from my outdoor wedding that I had let soak in there for a year and a half. There were still some red wine stains there but I guess that's my fault for letting it sit for so long. I feel shiested though because the sweet old lady said that it would only cost a little over a hundred dollars to clean it because I didn't want the preservation (which would cost $200). Four weeks later, I pick up my dress and it cost $198! She said she never said that, and that all wedding gowns have the preservation already, it would never turn yellow, they cleaned it twice to get the stains out, yadda yadda... She eventually knocked $20 off. I asked for a box, and she said they normally cost $48 but she could sell me one at cost for $38. Ugh, nevermind. That was pretty dirty, dry cleaning lady. read more

STAY AWAY!!!!!! This place is horrible and the lady does NOT take any blame for any wrongdoing. She ruined two shirts of mine, almost $200 each down the tubes. The first shirt she ruined, was by not getting the stains out. I mean, if the stains were in a location that she could easily miss, that would be something. But the stains were right in the front of the shirt. As for the second shirt, she overcooked it or something, cause the sleeves became discolored. When I confronted her about it, she claimed maybe is it was nail polish or something? REALLY?????? Again she does not take any responsibility or even try to apologize, instead she will try to pin the situation you. Not really a way to run a business in my opinion. If you care about your clothes, I suggest you find another place. I have attached photos of my shirts. read more

I agree---OMG!!! I searched high and low for a cleaner to clean my wedding dress that was going to do a good job w/o killing my budget. I bought my dress at a sample shop on sale, and wanted to get it cleaned before the wedding. I took it ALL over the place and got estimates of over $400! I could see how that might be the case if it was dirty, but it really wasn't; I just wanted it to be clean and pressed before I wore it for my wedding. Chun at French Cleaners is the NICEST lady, and will give you great service for a VERY reasonable price. My cleaning (again, it wasn't dirty at all, just a little bit from people trying the dress on, and a little wrinkled) was VERY affordable. Also, she only needed 1 week to clean it! I'll definitely take it back here to get cleaned after the wedding and to get heirloomed. read more

I've been going to the dry cleaners in Rockridge for the past year and have had really bad experiences. Then, suddenly, it was 2 days before a friend's wedding, and when I pulled my dress and shawl out of the closet they were a wrinkly mess. Help!! Called Garden Cleaners - turns out all of their services are off-site, which explains why all my clothes are always returned to me days late. In a panic, I called French Cleaners. The owner was not only incredibly nice and professional, but she said she'd be able to get the dress back to me by noon the next day. AND, instead of the obscene price I was expecting to get quoted, I was charged $16 for a quick cleaning/ironing of both my dress and the shawl. Yay, new favorite dry cleaners!! Next up: another wedding, another dress, and I need it to be altered. Hopefully they tailor as well as they dry clean - will keep you posted! read more

I've come here a number of times and they've never failed us. I still have yet to get the two ladies names I've dealt with. I come thru maybe every 4 months or so for dry cleaning or hemming and they know my last name! It is a conversation piece. I had brought in a white blouse that was stained maybe 6 years ago. I didn't think it would come out. They actually got it out! She had told me she had sent it back twice for them to get the stain out. When we've hemmed our pants with them as well, they were so thorough. We were asked to put the pants on with the shoes we intended on wearing them with. We "thought" we wanted a certain length, but she had advised us otherwise. She was correct. When we picked up our pants, we were asked to put them on to make sure we were satisfied with their work. I needed my wedding gown cleaned and went here after reading the positive reviews. I'm so glad I did! They had great service and I was so impressed by how they restored my wine/whiskey/dirt-stained wedding gown to looking brand new. They called me as soon as it was ready and charged me $200 (very fair). This place is really nice and friendly. They get to know your name after a few visits... Now when I come in, she sees me coming, and is already running the track to bring my stuff up right away. They are very quick and can do stuff for you in a jiffy if need be. I think I got them to do a shirt next day once and didn't charge extra. I really have no idea how expensive it is, I never know how to price cleaners. But it doesn't seem that bad. I bring in suits and shirts, and my fiance's clothes probably once every two weeks. I wasted a lot of money in here on alterations that I feel I should have been advised against making - too large clothes that would not have fit even when altered. I think I would have been more likely to go back here if they had told me not to waste my time. I got the clothes back and they were unwearable. My other tailor refused to do the clothes and I should have taken that advice. This women took my money (a lot of money) and the clothes did not work. She should have known better. Also - the time in there was horrible - she is very distracted - understaffed and has horrible customer service skills. She needs to have more staff there handling customers while she takes in alterations work. Don't be so cheap on the payroll - get more help in there so you can effectively help customers. The dry cleaning was good but expensive. I will not be going here again because I feel I was totally ripped off. read more

I brought my sample sale silk wedding dress into French Cleaners, which had been tried on by many before me and therefore was fairly dirty and stained. They were very nice! The price was equivalent to what I'd been quoted elsewhere (no more no less) and they told me to come back in a month to pick it up. Turns out I needed to make some more alterations and needed it sooner and they were very nice about it and got it to me in 2 weeks instead. The dress looked beautiful when I got it back, so clean! There were some small stains that I still noticed but was told that those they just could not get out unfortunately. They carefully wrapped my dress very professionally when giving it back to me. I would recommend them to anyone for their wedding dresses. It's stressful taking your wedding dress to the cleaners, it's always a risk, so it's nice to find a place that you can trust. read more

I'd been taking my dress shirts and pants here for over 15 years, then retired and moved, so it was not as convenient to get to the French Cleaners. I did not go back for over a year. But the new place I was going to was really ruining my good clothes! So I went back to French Cleaners. The lady greeted me by name as if I'd been there the previous week! Yeah, it's out of the way for me to get there now, but the quality of the work is just incredible. Highway Robbery. TOTALLY DISHONEST!! Who does this woman pay to get all these 5-star reviews? I've used her a lot in the past few years. Every time we go she jacks the prices. When stuff gets ruined she never takes responsibility, tries to blame the fabric and and then ME. I brought in my hubby's shirts and some of my work clothes. His shirts came back looking and smelling like they hadn't even been cleaned. And my dress was still wrinkly as if it had just been worn!!! So i asked her about this and she said, Oh, its the fabric, its just impossible to steam it. I looked at the tag and pointed out that its made of cotton, which is actually SUPER easy to steam. I just don't have a steamer, otherwise I would've done it myself. She said, Oh that because its THIN cotton its hard to steam. Also not true! She never once acknowledged that the shirts smelled or that the dress was wrinkly and looked worn, or made any suggestions for what to do. Other places will offer to at least try again or give a discount. But She charged us full price for a job she didn't do!!! Potential customers: Beware. Look around at the other 1 star reviews, you will see they are exactly the same. If you value your clothing go elsewhere. French Cleaners is AWFUL. read more

My family has been using their service for 20+ years. We have spent literally thousands of dollars at this business. And yet now we won't go back. We brought in a trench coat to be cleaned. They returned it without the belt (which was attached to the jacket and I never remove). I went in and told them it was missing. They said they would look for it and call me back. She called me back and said she couldn't find it, and started telling me that maybe I misremembered putting the belt on. I told her I never took it off, and she said she'd look again at the place where they actually clean the jacket and call me back 2 days later. She never called. I finally went in again to talk to her about it, and she said she looked everywhere, then after a lengthy discussion told me she could do nothing about it. She suggested I buy a new belt (which I can't do, the jacket is 5+ years old and I can't buy a belt without the jacket anyways). She said they looked everywhere, but then proceeded to tell me she thinks that I am mistaken and never brought the belt in anyways. I don't know why she bothered pretending to look if she thought I was lying the whole time anyway! I'm completely outraged. She said she could do nothing, and offered me $30-40 most. I didn't even take it -- the jacket cost me hundreds of dollars so this is a tiny dent in the damage they've done. I couldn't believe that after spending years and years being a loyal customer, we were treated like this. I also couldn't believe that even if she wouldn't refund me for the coat, she wouldn't offer to spend time trying to find or make me a new belt. Ridiculous. read more

SUMMARY: The lady that greets you is very nice. Your wool sweaters will NOT smell, in fact they will smell nice. STAIN REMOVAL HERE IS GREAT. I came here because a yelp review said the wool sweaters that are cleaned do not smell badly when they are cleaned here, which is true. Also, for stain removal for your favorite clothes, she said they go the extra mile: they'll spray your clothes again if the stain doesn't come out the first time, and will stop if color is removed. She said they really work hard for that, and go further than the other cleaners in town to make the garments look great. Also, she marks each and every stain you point out with tape. Other cleaners I have been to in berkeley say "okay okay we'll get that out" but you know when they see it later, they might not see all the stains and not remember what you pointed out ( the last place i went to didnt even try to get the obvious stains out). If you have clothing you love and it's stained, I would try French Cleaners first. Overall, this is one of the highest quality cleaners in Berkeley, and they excel at stain removal and making sure your wool sweaters don't smell badly. read more

A dry cleaner in Berkeley/near Temescal that provides excellent service (no longer do my sweaters come back smelling like feet), is in the medium price range (certainly not the cheapest, but cheaper than the one dry cleaners we used to go to on Ashby and Claremont), and has wonderful, very personable service. I think the icing on the cake was when the fun asian woman who worked there carried my dry cleaning stack to my car and spent the time figuring out my stupid passenger handles to hang the dry cleaning off of. read more

I recommend the French Cleaners highly, and send my customers (I own a clothing store) there all the time. Chun is always pleasant and remembers everyone's name. Cleaning is done quickly and at reasonable prices. Amara is also a sweetheart and charges the best prices around for basic alterations. This review relates to alterations only. I had several problems with French Cleaners: 1. Way too expensive. They charge $10-15 for a very simple 1-minute alteration job that requires just a couple of stitches. In my experience, many other alteration places would do minor jobs for free, especially when you buy a lot from them. French Cleaners do not do that. 2. The work quality is often poor. Sometimes they would do a decent job, other times they deliver unacceptable results. read more

I went to these women recently based on the other great Yelp reviews and was beyond happy with the results. I took in a very expensive coat that I'd bought at a huge vintage expo in SF. I had never paid so much for a coat and was concerned as it had what looked to be either pen marks or black grease stains in a small patch right in the front, which was quite visible. It was a special kind of exotic woven wool and a light green/sage color. Needless to say, I was worried that the stains wouldn't come out. Right away the sweet woman who I spoke with at the counter went to work on examining the coat. She was very professional and stated that she didn't know what the stain was and thus couldn't guarantee that it would come out but that she would give it multiple cleanings if need be to get the best result. At this point, I wasn't expecting much except that they might reduce the appearance of the stain. Imagine my surprise when I got a call from her several days later saying that the jacket was ready (well before she said it would be) and that the stain had come out completely! I had to see it with my own eyes. When I picked up the coat, I was astonished. The stain had seemingly disappeared and the coat somehow looked even brighter, almost like new. Amazing! I now wear this one of a kind coat and get comments on it constantly. Thank you French Cleaners, you guys hit the ball out of the ball park! read more

The woman at the front counter was very helpful and honest about cleaning the items and how the cleaning process would affect the various materials. The cleaning was very fairly priced and the items came out great. If they used green cleaning techniques I would give them 5 stars. STAY AWAY!!!!! This is the WORSE cleaner I have been to. Not only is the lady/owner beyond rude, she also doesn't actually dry clean your items. I took my lab coat in to get dry cleaned with starch, and when I picked it up it looked EXACTLY the same. Unfortunately since she's the owner, she didn't care or acknowledge my concern.
