I don't think it gets any better than Anne. She is such a pro and I'm so glad I found her! My dress was a little complicated, as it came in two pieces (a slip and the fancy part that goes over it) with hand beading and a bazillion layers of tulle. We did quite a lot, including a hem for both parts, taking in the bodice, raising the bodice, and lowering/expanding the arm holes. Anne even made my veil and a detachable train as my dress couldn't bustle. She gave me a quote on my first visit and I was surprised at how reasonable it was considering how much work was needed. Based of the several appointments I had with her, I could tell that I made the right decision by trusting her with my dress. She knew how to source the right materials at the best prices and worked her magic to create a very complicated detachable train that looked great on my wedding day. This review has been long overdue. I had the pleasure of working with Anne for my wedding dress last year. I had found her through Yelp, wanting to find someone who can make custom alterations for a work-in-progress dress at prices I could afford. Trying to save money wherever possible, I had bought my wedding dress online where they make the dresses overseas and really liked the style and fit. However, the dress was made very quickly and I could tell that the quality had suffered (since I could see the boning and seams at the bodice of the dress). When I had reached out to other sewing & alternations listings on Yelp, they had all told me they could not do anything to help. Here is what made Anne different.  When I reached out to Anne, her response was "I have worked on this style before," and she was able to give me very reasonable quotes. We began the process of working on my dress 9 months before the date, and she was very communicative and attentive throughout the whole process. Anne is truly a professional in her craft. She'll tell you exactly what you can or cannot do, make suggestions you may not even think about, and overall she'll take good care of you! I can't believe I haven't written a review for Anne yet! She is the only seamstress I would have trusted with my wedding dress! A couple years ago I had a baggy (too big) lime green shantung silk mermaid bridesmaid dress (totally going to wear it again) that obviously needed some fitting. :) I found Anne through a friend whose wedding dress she basically re-made. It was a size 12 and my friend wears a size 0 (she got it at one of those name brand discount stores where they only have one of each dress). Well at the wedding, the dress was gorgeous and looked like it was made for her (because it basically was). In any case, another of my fellow bridesmaids and I decided to contact Anne for our green mermaid dresses. We got appointments no problem, and Anne took in and hemmed and tucked until the dress fit me perfectly. She even hid a little pop out button in a tiny pocket along the back seam of the skirt so I could bustle up the back so I didn't trip on it on the dance floor (did I mention the lime green, shantung silk, mermaid gown also had a train? Totally going to wear it again). She did all this while working with me to keep the cost down. She is amazing! So fast forward to this year, I just found my wedding dress and I wouldn't dream of taking it to anyone but Anne. I liked the dress before it fit well, but as the weeks and fittings went by I could see just how well my dress was going to fit and now I am sooo excited to wear it! She did such a good job taking in the bust so that it fit just right. My MOH (and incidentally the other friend who took her lime green, shantung silk, mermaid bridesmaid dress to Anne, we are totally going to wear those again) came with me to a fitting and Anne showed her exactly how to do up the ties in the back of the dress. She also prints out instructions just in case you forget and need a refresher. On top of all that, Anne is a really nice person and fun to talk with during the fitting. And, we started talking about veils so she showed me a whole bunch of different types and lengths and edge finishes and ended up making mine with the perfect finish so that it looks like it was made for my dress. Anne also has a really cute little grand daughter who thinks that her grandma makes and sews dresses for princesses, and a really cool cat (don't worry the cat doesn't try on any of the dresses). Everything was beautifully pressed and steamed and ready to go at my final appointment and I couldn't be happier with the whole experience, including the price of all the hemming and fitting + veil (definitely on the lower side of what you can expect to pay for alterations, I am sure Anne could charge a lot more). Its been 2 years since I got married and I am finally writing a review. Sorry it took so long. I have actually gone to Anne for 2 different dresses. The first was my wedding dress. I was skeptical about anyone adjusting my dress because it was unconventional with lots of beading, sequins, and full of all kinds of crazy mixed material. Anne was recommended by a friend so I went with her and luckily she was available. Also, I live close by which was a major plus and convenience. It took maybe 4 or 5 fittings, 1 including a time she let me come over just to try on my possible wedding bras. I really appreciated that. Sometimes it's hard to explain to someone how you want more cleavage or you want the butt of your dress to be tighter, but I felt so comfortable with her. She was so understanding with anything I wanted to change and gave me her honest opinion which was helpful. I couldn't have rocked that wedding dress if it wasn't for her. AND she made my veil!! She is awesome! I also went to her to hem the inner layer of a laced dress that I chose as my bridesmaids dress in a friend's wedding. I wanted more lace to show at the bottom of the dress and she took care of that hem with no problem. I had to dye the dress, and for some stupid reason, I did that before I got it altered. So after getting the top of the dress reshaped from a covered chest to a V-neck I had to find matching fabric or ribbon to go around the hem like the arm holes had. What a pain in the butt process that was. But Anne helped me through that by supplying fabrics to try dying and eventually I got the right color and she fixed it all up for me. Seems like that might have been an annoying project to handle but she was so nice about it and helped me in any way she could. I highly recommend Anne! After the first consultation, we had a laundry list of things to change. Hemming was the biggest issue. To add another level of complication, my dress was made of lace. I was really excited to find Anne. I bought a wedding dress that I absolutely loved, except it was backless....and I don't have the kind of back that could pull that off. Since Anne makes her own dresses from scratch, I was happy to find her to make me a back for the dress. Overall my experience with her was very positive. She's really kind and definitely reasonably priced. And her work is stunning. She matched the fabric of my dress so well, and she did a practice run with cheaper fabric before making the real thing to make sure I liked it. She's incredibly talented and has a great vision for what will work for different body types. My only issue with her was with scheduling. I have a feeling she's become really popular and busy and hasn't figured out how to schedule things correctly. There were twice when she cancelled on me -- very last minute -- because she had a dress she had to finish up for a wedding that was coming up soon. Another 2 times, I went there and she'd literally done nothing since our last meeting. She certainly didn't charge me for all of her time, which I appreciate, but I felt like I wasted a lot of time (either going to her for basically no reason when she hadn't done anything, or else having to rearrange my schedule last minute). Someone had referred Anne and I definitely take referrals close to heart as finding a good seamstress is hard to do. She gets booked up very quickly, so I was hoping to be one of the lucky brides to be fit into her schedule! Luckily, I had contacted her in October for my September wedding so I had plenty of time. My wedding dress needed to be taken in, but the fabric ended up being trickier to work with than I had thought. She gives you an estimate of the work ahead of time and charges one flat rate. The number of fittings turned out to be around 6 because she was such a perfectionist picking up things at each fitting that I wouldn't have otherwise noticed. During my first initial fittings, she spent a great deal of time at the bottom of my dress marking and pinning things up. Then when I came back, she'd notice that one side was not even and wanted it perfect so she'd go back to fix it instead of saying "meh good enough". When we tried on my heavy beaded belt on, she noticed that it was sagging a bit due to the weight and she told me it'd be a good idea to sew it onto the dress. When I came back to try it on, she sewed it less than 0.5 inches off center and wanted to redo it. It was a very tiny detail that she picked up on. She made the bustling on my dress super secure and sewed on buttons hidden underneath my dress. She sewed a total of 9 loops on my dress for 7 buttons so in case one of them broke, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. The bustling lasted the entire duration of the wedding and not a single one broke! I have heard many stories of seamstresses only sewing on one loop, that would break almost immediately because they are so delicate. Anne is a super sweet lady, very professional, and does a fantastic job. My dress fit perfectly on my big day and I couldn't have been happier with the results. I am sad to have to give Anne a bad review because she seems like a sweet lady. I had found her through Yelp and contacted her 15 months before my wedding about making a custom gown for me. I met with her twice and to talk about my ideas and the price she quoted me was $1200 (pretty reasonable I thought for a custom wedding dress). She told me 15 months before the wedding that she didn't need to start making the dress until about 8 months before the wedding, so 7 months later I went back and got measured and scheduled the first fitting in the muslin. On the day before I was scheduled to have my first fitting, she emailed me and told me she was too busy now to start a custom gown. (WTF!?! , that's why I originally came 15 months before the wedding! And she couldn't give me more of a heads up on this beyond the day before the muslin was supposed to be finished?) Luckily this was not right before my wedding that she flaked on me so I had time to make other arrangements, but the experience was very aggravating. With that said, I would also say that she seems a bit disorganized in general, and slow with responses as other people have mentioned. The studio seemed a bit cluttered and her cat(s?) was roaming around with all the dresses. I'm sure her work is good and well priced based on what other people have said, but I wouldn't recommend her based on my experience even if she is a nice lady. read more

Anne, you seriously should charge more. Her work is awesome and her attention to detail is fantastic. She altered my dress in the bust, hem, middle, put in a unique and beautiful 5-point bustle (I told Anne, "I didn't even know what a bustle WAS before I met you, and now I get why people care!") and covered buttons up the back--all for $150. I think I had four fittings total. She told me to try the dress on a few weeks before the wedding to make sure it still fits. We'll see!! The other great thing about Anne is her attention to detail. The bustle buttons/elastic loops were all color coded to make putting it together as simple as possible for my friends and family on the day of. Anne is amazing! I can't believe it took me this long to write a review. I was the ultimate bargain shopper when it came to wedding dress shopping (my wedding was August 2012). I looked at sample stores like Glamour Closet in N. Beach and all of the dresses there were pretty ratty looking. True they're designer dresses but they had "been around" and you could tell. I was running out of time and had no time to order a new dress with the long turnaround time to get it back. So low and behold I found a beautiful dress on Craigslist (worn once). I never thought I'd want to wear a dress that someone else wore but after I met the girl who appeared to be happily married (3 years later) I felt like the dress had good "juju." The dress almost fit but needed to be taken out in the mid-section a bit and taken in up top. I have to add - this dress had already been altered once. So Anne worked her magic and redid the dress for me. She ended up reshaping the bustline so it was more flattering to me which we hadn't talked about in the beginning and she didn't charge me more. She's a perfectionist and didn't seem to mind that the dress needed a little more work after a couple fittings. I think I ended up having 3 fittings (maybe 4!). I was excited when I found Anne on Yelp, and I emailed her to see if she was available to either make or alter a dress for me. She emailed me that she was full to make a dress, but had room for alterations. Great! I already had a dress in mind, so I ordered it and she "penciled me in" for the promised arrival date, or so she said... I emailed her back several times to tell her that my dress had come in early, but I never got a response back. I assumed that she was just busy and would get back to me, so I waited a week or so between emails, but she never did. I ended up stressed and scrambling to find another place for the alterations. I talked to Anne about altering my wedding dress after getting quotes from Louise Austrie and Mimi's in Oakland. Her quote was hundreds less, and I booked my appointments on the spot. I found her to be very responsive (via email), and she never chewed me out when I was late for every single appointment (sorry, Anne!). Most importantly, I felt like she was refreshingly pragmatic for someone in the wedding industry- she understood that I was only wearing this dress for a few hours. Rather than resew the lace hem one inch higher, she put more tulle under the dress to lift it up. Brilliant! The final quote came to less than her original bid. All the times I've tried to reach Anne, I have, so I don't think communication will be a problem. Anne's very friendly. Her service is reasonably priced (the cheapest around so I hear) and she takes her time in doing a fine job on altering wedding dresses. I had to take my dress in quite a bit and came in for multiple fittings - Anne is sweet and patient. The only reasons you may hesitate coming to Anne's is if you're allergic to cats (she has an adorable one) and if you don't have a car - she's located in the Oakland hills, which is quite a windy, uphill drive with difficult parking. At the recommendation of a co-worker who had her wedding dress made by Anne, I went to to her for some alterations on a bridesmaid dress. The dress was a mermaid cut, which didn't exactly fit my body type ideally. After meeting Anne for the first time I knew I was in good hands. We had 3 appointments and over the weeks, Anne was able to make my dress fit like it was made for me. She also offered to add a bustle to my dress, since it had a train and I planned to dance at the wedding. It was such a great idea - something none of the other bridesmaids' alterations places thought of. While there, I couldn't help but notice Anne's incredible work with bridal gowns. She's professional, easy to talk to, and knows wedding dresses like no one else. She is methodical and careful with how she pins. She tries to keeps the original construct of the dress to the extent possible. There were features of my dress (sweetheart neckline, flowly soft trumpet, lace work) that I didn't want to lose in the alterations process and she assured me I'd be very happy with the results. What can I say about Anne? Anne is one of the sweetest, most patient people I have had the pleasure to meet. Going to Anne once a month for my wedding and reception dress alterations became a ritual that I looked so forward to during my wedding preparation! Anne's studio is in her house in Montclair and it is like a little lovely getaway each time you see her. I actually had the opposite problem of most brides, Anne dubbed me the "incredible shrinking bride" because I lost so much weight to get into my ceremony dress, that my reception dress, which previously fit really well, became very loose. My reception dress was a very awkward show everything satin, so difficult to take in, but she did a flawless job and I felt and looked amazing at my wedding! My ceremony dress had a crazy organza train, and Anne did a phenomenal job shortening the train and altering the bust! Anne was also very meticulous when it came to finishing the gown and making sure it was pressed properly and all embellishments were returned. I really feel like I made a friend in working with Anne and will miss our monthly sessions. Anne didn't make my gown, but she did all of the alterations. After realizing my original alteration person wasn't going to work out, I contacted her less than 2 months before the wedding a little bit frantic. She allowed me to come to her studio after work which was a huge bonus for me. Everywhere else I looked would have required me to take precious vacation time off of work. She also does excellent work for a more than reasonable price. She gave me a beautiful French bustle (with color coded buttons to help my family figure it out), and she pinned my bustier into the dress so it wouldn't show. Finding a seamstress you trust is hard to come by, so finding Anne is a true gem. My mom instantly felt like Anne was someone who had a strong work ethic and trusted to handle my alterations, which was a plus to get the mom seal-of-approval! I agree that sometimes Anne can be hard to get a hold of since she works from her home and tries to fit in as many brides as possible, but I was so thankful that she was able to squeeze my best friend in and she did such a great job at an incredibly reasonable price for both of us, that the delayed communication was okay. She is honest and patient. She told us about many a bride who would fluctuate weight significantly and she would have to redo or undo work, but she understands that is part of the job. She really understands her craft and doesn't take advantage of you. I called many other places who said my alteration couldn't be done, but Anne did it seamlessly! Michelle M's review is spot on- Anne has a cat that may be an issue for some with severe allergies. Usually I have a problem with cat dander, but I didn't find a problem, and she can always open her door to let fresh air in. I would recommend planning to get your dress finished a week before your wedding in case there are any last minute changes that you think you want done. I did that, and I am glad I did so that Anne could take a little more time on a seam that was puckering out a little bit. read more

I see it has all been said, but Anne was just the seamstress a bride dreams about. Low key, fantastically talented, reasonably priced and Voila! Your dress is perfect. I bought my dress at David's and if I had my dress altered there, it would have been five times the price (at least) and i would have been crying at the end of it all because they don't really care if it comes out good or not. When you deal directly with a business owner, there is no room for poor service and Anne is the best! If she is available she is well worth the drive up the winding Snake Dr. to the Oakland Hills. read more

Anne did an amazing job on my dress! She went above and beyond in creating a bustle that I liked. I didn't love the way the traditional bustle looked, so she designed a (very) complicated bustle that looked amazing and held up beautifully during my wedding. Anne was a pleasure to work with! I was also referred by the wonderful ladies at The Wedding Party. They said that Anne was as good as they get at a very competitive price (so basically I should contact her asap to get on her radar!). I contacted Anne via email as soon as I ordered my dress and we made an appointment for the week following my dress pick-up. We had several appointments in her home (which some people might think is uncomfortable/unprofessional feeling) and each time I (and my friends/family with me) felt right at home. As a bonus, the view is spectacular from her workshop too! Anne was very responsive to any changes I wanted and assured me that I could come in as many times as it took to get the alterations right. The price never changed from her original quote, even with a few extra changes she had to make. Her custom work looks amazing and seems reasonably priced too, so if you are having trouble finding a dress or like part of one dress and part of another I would say it is worth looking into! read more

Anne was great! I found a wedding dress that I absolutely loved...the only problem was the excessively plunging neckline and "gapping" happening in the lace halter bodice (apparently a difficult problem to remedy). With the exception of the "under-boob" visibility, the dress was perfect. I took it to one seamstress who quoted me $485, insisting that redoing the whole bodice was the only way to fix the problems... Whereas I loved the dress, I was crushed and close to returning it after a prognosis like that. Thanks to Anne's creativity, skillfulness, and talent I got to wear the dress I loved. When it was all said and done, I had a perfectly modest and fitting dress with a charming french bustle for far less than half the price I was previously quoted. Anne did an amazing job, charged so much less than her work is worth, and was a pleasure to meet with. I did not have any trouble with scheduling or communications. I found her to be prompt and accommodating when it came to emailing/scheduling. It was a great experience working with her, and I can confidently recommend her to anyone looking for a great seamstress/designer. read more

Anne did the alterations on my wedding dress recently, and everything turned out great. I'm not a dress person/girly girl at all, and I felt like a farm girl wearing a lacy sack when I first got my dress, but now it fits me perfectly. When I put it on and put up the bustle, I feel like one of those cupcake dolls from the 80s with the really pretty dresses ... I know that sounds really weird, but I mean that in a good way! I didn't have any problems with communication/scheduling, by the way. Edit: While most of the fit was great, we never did manage to get the (cap) sleeves right... after some fixes, they were more or less okay when I was standing up completely straight and still at the fittings, but on my wedding day one kept falling off my shoulder. I do wish she had anticipated that and kept adjusting until they fit better. It sounds like a little problem, but it was actually really annoying (and embarrassing during the ceremony), and a number of the professional candid photographs ended up being unusable (in my opinion) because with the dress hanging off my shoulder I look really sloppy. read more
