Cannot recommend this place enough! They are honest about their capabilities, and willing to do their best. I rarely go to the dry cleaners, but I accidentally ran my laundry through the dryer with a lipstick in it, and got lipstick splatters all over my clothes (linen, wool, cotton). I initially took the clothes to Virginia Cleaners, who flat out refused to take it. When I went to Sew Clean Dry Cleaners, they were honest in saying they might not be able to get the stains out, but they were willing to try for $10 a piece. Since there were a lot of small stains, it was a lot of work -- but they were able to get all the stains out! I liked that they were upfront with me but willing to try. read more

This is the nightmare of night mare dry cleaners. They destroyed 2sweaters of mine in February. The sweaters were literally chewed up on the sleeves and in the back. When I brought it to their attention, they denied having anything to do with the damaged articles, stating the sweaters were old anyway. When I proceeded to take photos of the damaged articles, they panicked, were visibly frightened. I sent them a letter stating the facts. They ignored me. A word to the wise . This is a cleaners I trusted and frequented for years. Even if you have not had problems with them, BEWARE, I f something goes wrong on their end, they will not take corrective action. read more

Its always really nice to frequent a small or family run business where the owner knows your name. When you couple that with the fact that I am a messy person - its reassuring to know my often stained and splatterd clothes are going to be handled expertly. (In four years I have only managed to screw one shirt up beyond Sew Clean's spot cleaning abilities) Mending prices (sewing on buttons and the like) are a bit steep - so would recommend a little DIY action on any small repairs. read more

Before coming to Sew Clean, I had no idea what to expect from dry cleaners in Berkeley. I don't know much about dry cleaning, period. What I did want was a good clean and low price. Sew Clean gave me just that. I was actually surprised by the final price (coat, jacket, dress pants for $23). Since I was in no rush, I came back after four days to nice fresh clothing. Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is a funny story. The coat I brought in had little pet hairs in the wool that I was hoping to get out. The lady working told me she would try, but might not be able to get them all. Just then, a little short hair dog comes prancing to the front from behind the counter. Don't worry, I didn't have get any additional hairs. I will definitely come back here. read more

I had a pretty terrible experience when I went there in spring of 2014. Yes, they're cheap. That's because they squish everything without care. My nice wool dress coat had imprints of its buttons all the way through all the layers of fabric where they'd folded it to press it! The cotton shirts I brought in because they had grease stains didn't get cleaned at all- you could see the spray marks of their pre-treat solution but that was it. I took it back and they re-did it, but not before (the owner?) called me to explain that my shirt was really crappy and why did I want to bother?! (I think she thought I was asking for some sort of repair on it or something? Couldn't tell what she was thinking because her accent was pretty strong.) Eventually, she agreed to clean it (I mean, I'd paid for the cleaning already!) even though it was a crappy shirt, I guess. Not coming back, obviously. read more

I brought a dress here to be shortened. I did ask for it to be taken up quite a bit, but a competent tailor should be able to do that. When I got it home, I saw that the hem was extremely uneven, shorter than I asked for in some places and longer in others. I'm not sure the dress can be fixed, because if it's taken up to the shortest point, it'll be too short for me to wear. If they didn't think they could do a straight hem, they shouldn't have accepted the job. As a result of their incompetence, I'm out $90 for the dress and $24 for the tailor work. I plan on taking it back to Sew-Clean Cleaners but based on some of the reviews I see here, I don't expect much in the way of compensation. Don't let the fact that this place is in the Gourmet Ghetto area of Berkeley fool you. Stay away. read more

May i inquire as to what exactly dry cleaning is?? Well whatever it is its really freaking expensive. I don't know too much about what the usual rates for dry cleaning are, but Sew Clean doesn't seem too cheap. But i had some very important clothes that finally needed to be taken to the cleaners, so I ended up spending $40 dollars for: 1. My absolute favorite Grey tuxedo jacket that I wear everywhere. After a ridiculous night in the Castro I kindly allowed my dearest oldest friend to puke into my beautiful jacket so she wouldn't regurgitate on the upholstery of my other dear friend's nice car. If that's not friendship biatches I don't know what is. 2. The most beloved dress that I own. My grandma (the woman I admire and honor the most in this world) made herself a perfect polka-dot sundress with pink satin ribbons for straps when she was a junior in high school. She gave it to me last year and its fits perfectly.I feel so pretty in it and I have a lot of happy memories associated with it. (I wore it the day I met someone very very special to me). Its amazing and still in flawless condition and I would like to keep it that way. 3. A really sexy skirt 4. A thin black jacket, I have no idea if Sew Clean's prices are reasonable enough but they did an amazing job with my precious items, so I wasn't too pissed at the cost-sometimes it's worth it for the important stuff. My grandma's dress, after over 50 years of wear, came out pristine and if it was made yesterday. I can now proudly wear my tuxedo jacket sweet smelling and puke free!!!!!! All my clothes were cleaned, pressed and as good as new! Sew Clean does a great job for the price. Now if only I could go back to the days when I lived at home and I would just slip my dry cleaning in with my mom's and somehow it would end up in my room, clean and free of charge(for me). I would have given them 1 star, but my first visit with them was a mixed bag. Took two garments in last week. (1) A pair of jeans that had worn and ripped in the crotch and needed to be patched and reinforced. (2) A merino wool sweater that had gotten a small dirt stain on the back. When I picked them up - $15 for the patch on the jeans and $7 for the shirt - I was unpleasantly surprised. (1) I have large thighs and inevitably all of my jeans wear down or rip in the crotch from the friction. I've taken them to _other_ tailors before who have masterfully patched the hole and beautifully hidden the stitching inside the seams and used a matching-color thread where they couldn't - all for $10. HOWEVER, Sew Clean did an absolute hack job patching my favorite pair of jeans. The patch was black and white striped material, which would not have bothered me except they used a dark blue thread - on my light blue jeans - in a meandering and asymmetrical criss-cross pattern across the entire patch to reinforce it. The result is an ugly mess and I can never sit down in my jeans again without exposing to the world the horrid craftsmanship of the "Sew" part of Sew Clean. (2) The dirt stain on my sweater was removed, but the sweater is not as soft as before. I hope it is just chemical residue and my sweater will be back to normal after its first wash in cold water at home. Their dry-cleaning skills seem to be fine, but apparently unless you explicitly tell them how to do their job when patching your jeans they'll take artistic license in determining what "wearable" actually means. read more

A great neighborhood cleaners-- reliable, friendly. The owner has a freakish memory for names and faces, as I come in maybe once every 6 months and she knows me, and my wife, and asks about my daughter! One problem: the owner has a small dog and the place is, well, dog-smelly. Doesn't get on the clothes, just sort-of odd. read more

The owner is very nice and her work is efficient. The price is a little pricey but the quality of the work is worth it. My suit was well cleaned and pressed. My button on a old shirt was strengthen nicely and, I assume since it wasn't much work she did it as a freebee. I am a frequent customer so that could've been the reason for free work. read more

UPDATE: When I went to pick up the sweater, I was no longer charged for the button repairs (nice)...perhaps my Yelp review was the motivation, I have no idea. But when relating this story to my colleague, he expressed disbelief at my experience, for he had noticed the night before that Sew Clean broke the buttons on the dress shirts he took in for cleaning. Stay away!!! If I could give 0 stars or negative stars or stars that burst, I would. This place communicates poorly, exercises worse judgment than a teething pug, and deflects all responsibility for their mistakes onto you, the customer. Here's what could happen to you if you take clothing in for alteration: Say you need something hemmed. Simple, right? Instead of the requested hemming, you will receive a call from the store with questions. Unfortunately, the person calling will not have the requisite vocabulary and level of English to make a standard transaction in the industry in which she works. The person will have a hard time explaining her question--(and it's not that "you're" not good at listening to non-native English speakers since "you" have extensive personal and teaching experience with speakers of various languages). Despite your busy schedule and the fact that it's beyond a customer's duty, you offer to go in person to make the issue clearer. But you will find that your offer is useless because, while you have contacted the store in a timely manner (next business day) in response to their message about "having a question," they will have already sent out your clothes for alterations. Going in person would be futile. The caller will insist that you resolve the confusion over the phone; you are still not exactly sure what her question is. She will put on the phone someone who (she claims) speaks better English than she does. He will explain the issue that is troubling them and you will tell him not to deal with that issue; you will state clearly that the ONLY thing you want altered is what you told them when you were dropping off the garment: You just want the article of clothing hemmed. He will say OK and Goodbye, and you will hang up. You will go to the store to pick up your altered clothing to find that alterations you did not authorize were made and that you were charged for them. When you explain to the person (who acknowledges being the same person who contacted you with questions initially) that you did not want the additional alterations, that you did not want to be charged for those changes you did not authorize, and that you needed the garment restored to its original state (minus the hemming), that person will tell you that you did not make it known to her that you did not want the additional alterations. She will tell you that you should have told her that all you wanted changed was the hem. It will not matter that you told the person (who she claimed had better English skills) who she placed on the phone. She will tell you that he never told her that you said you wanted no change other than the hem--she will act like you are responsible for what the other employee did or did not tell her. She will also tell you that you need to understand that she did not understand what you wanted; she will say it as if she bears no responsibility in her failure to understand what you wanted. She will continue to evade responsibility--for her own lack of communication skills essential to her job; for her own haste in sending off a garment with instructions that she was unsure were correct; for her miscommunication with another employee. By the time you're done, you'll feel that they should pay YOU for all your time and effort they've wasted. Spare yourself and get your clothes made cleaner and prettier somewhere else. read more

if i could give zero stars, i would. they ruined my new button up work shirt by leaving a bleach blotch in front of my shirt. they denied it of course. they said they only use chemicals when the customer specially requests it. i told her to check my original slip cuz i did not request special spot treatment. she couldn't find the original slip. i begrudgingly provide her my copy and said she can copy it. she said they don't have a copy machine and that i either hand over my slip so she can talk to the owners about it or i walk down the street to make a copy myself. what kind of business is this? ruining clothes, losing things, and making customers walk down the street to copy things? i never came back here. i took my business down the street to sam's cleaners, where my clothes have never been ruined and the owners are super friendly. read more

Small, friendly, and efficient neighbourhood business. Their times are always reasonable, and they are significantly cheaper than a number of other cleaners in the same area. They also do a good job getting stains out! They seem to do good work tailoring as well - I had them fix the lining on my wife's favourite winter coat, which they did for about $30. Several times I've gone in just to have a button that was falling off a jacket fixed, and they've told me just to pay the next time I come in. That kind of friendly service keeps me coming back. I have had nothing but good experiences here. The woman who runs the place is friendly and helpful and always remembers my name. Their prices are very reasonable (and if you don't think so, try going to Virginia Cleaners and half block away) and they advertise that they use organic materials to clean rather than harsh chemicals. I couldn't prove this is true but my clothes do not come back with that awful dry cleaning fluid smell so I suspect it is. I would recommend it as a small, local, well run, reasonably priced dry cleaning and sewing service. read more
