I took a prized "Penny Lane" style sweater coat here with faux fur along the collar and cuffs and I just wanted her freshened up. I hadn't even worn her yet. She wasn't dirty or having any odor. I got her back home and took her from the plastic bag and she has a pungent odor that strangely resembles Indian spices. It makes no sense but it's so strong, I can't even wear it out. I don't know what happened but I'm definitely never going back. I've never encountered this before in my life. I would not trust them with anything that you can't wash at home after. I'm afraid of what might happen if they attempt to fix it. Do I go back or just take it to another cleaner who won't turn my coat into a spicy mess? read more

I took a coat here to be dry cleaned, have buttons tightened and have the tag resewn in as it was falling off. The coat came back smelling terrible, as other reviews have mentioned. And when I went to pick it up, I noticed the tag was sewn in such a way that it bunched together the back fabric of the coat. I pointed it out and they rushed to redo it in 30 minutes, but I was not at all impressed with the quality. Within a week, the buttons were falling off again and the tag came undone. These photos were taken one week after the service. Super disappointing - and this service cost quite a bit and took a week for some reason. I took items in for alterations and was told a dress couldn't be hemmed without being visible damaged! They clearly did not have right Part on the sewing machine. Another shop made a prefect h without damaging my dress.Then when I returned to pick up pants they were balled up and more wrinkled than when I requested they be hemmed. Location/Parking:: Located on Solano Ave right next to 7-11 there is a private lot for those two businesses. Sometimes it can get packed because of the 7-11 customers, but usually you can easily get a space. The Interior:: It is a very small laundry service where they have one seat for the customers to wait and a very small changing area that has a seat for the customer to put their clothes on. There is a curtain that closes while you change. Service:: I believe this place has changed owners because awhile ago it was owned by koreans; however I no longer see them there anymore. Either way when I came in to get some clothes dry cleaned and to get some pants hemmed, the service was professional and everyone was kind. The lady who does the hemming is a very king korean woman who listens to your needs and pays attention to how you want your clothing hemmed. These people do an excellent job with cleaning, laundry, and alterations. However lately I have been quite annoyed because the opening and closing times that they list online are not correct: I have twice driven over to the establishment and found a small hand-written sign on the door saying that they are already closed, when I had carefully timed my arrival to be before the 7pm closing time listed on the web. So I hope that Clean Living Cleaners can update their website and Yelp listing to include the correct hours for opening and closing. It would be a big help to their customers. read more

My favorite dry cleaner! I moved to Albany 3 years ago, I tried a couple of dry cleaners but this one is definitely the best I've found. They are always friendly, the service is excellent and affordable, I've brought them coats, shirts, pants, silk dresses and tops and never had any trouble. I particularly appreciate that they use an eco-friendly cleaning process, because regular dry cleaners use very toxic substances which is unhealthy for their employees and their customers. We have had a wool rug cleaned here successfully and subsequently brought in our son's alpaca area rug, specifying that it was alpaca. They did not call us when it was ready. After a month, we came in to check in on it, and there it was in a bag. It smelled a bit odd and they commented "it's been here for a while" and told us it hadn't gone "perfectly," asking us repeatedly about what it was made of. I reminded them it was alpaca, and it was clear they didn't know what it was. I paid the amount they suggested, assuming that they just had high standards and had slipped up on calling us to remind us to pick up. When we got home, the rug was IN PIECES, no longer a rug. It was still wet and smelled moldy. We went back and asked them to reverse the charges on the credit card, which they claimed they would do but did not do (just checked my statement after a few weeks and the charge is still there). We understand things go wrong sometimes in cleaning, and that people make mistakes. We don't mind bearing the cost of the rug. But to be charged for this service, in spite of what they knew, and then lied to about reversing the charge, simply isn't excusable. We will not be back, and we don't recommend trusting them with your cleaning. read more

Just had 4 rugs cleaned by Clean Living Cleaners. 3 of them were oriental and a 4th with a special 3 dimensional pattern in it. None had been cleaned in 10+ years. They did a wonderful job for a reasonable price. They were careful about moving all the furniture out of the way and then replacing it so as to be usable while the rugs were out. I was unable to have them returned to the house during normal business hours and they brought them to me at 7:30 in the evening, again moving all of the furniture out of the way, putting the rugs down, straightening them, and then replacing the furniture. The worst customer service experience of my life. The man raised his voice at me--telling me I was crazy for thinking the machine had ruined my favorite jeans. The thing is, I spent my twenties washing my clothes in defunct SF laundromats and know exactly what a crappy machine and lack of paying attention to drying times can do to clothes. (See photo). Now that I'm an adult, I figured I could splurge and put my better clothes in someone else's care. Anyway, the man went so far as to recruit the person behind me in line to argue against my point that the machine had ruined the pants. It was so humiliating and degrading--why she chimed in, I'll never know. Some people just like conflict I guess. I had been coming to this cleaners for wash and fold and alterations for a few weeks and probably spent upwards of $400 in those weeks. The women who work there had done a great job with alterations. They were sweet. I ignored the fact that the first times I had taken clothes there for wash and fold there was a little wear and tear. The ring I accidentally left in my pocket had the varnish taken off. That's totally my fault for leaving it in the pocket, but a testament to the harshness of their equipment. The man kept asking me why I hadn't said anything earlier about the harshness on my clothes, and I said it was not that big of a deal because some where in tear going to wash and fold as expected. But not total ruination of $250 jeans. The man also went on and on and on trying to prove his point that the damage was a "fabric issue" and "normal wear." No. It wasn't (as you can see from the clear line of stretch marks on one side and not the other). The lady behind me remarked, "It's the style. All of my jeans have holes in them." I just thought to myself I must be having a nightmare. 15 years working in customer service, I know that all the man had to do was apologize and maybe give me a gift certificate for 30 bucks. Instead he yelled at me, told me I was crazy, and made a point of humiliating me in front of one of their other customers. Quite possibly the worst place ever. I brought in 2 vintage jackets and when I picked them up (both having identical fabric) one was completely ruined. The owner said "it wasn't our fault, we have a 70k machine". After pressing many questions about the possibility of human error and him saying it was "impossible" it ended with him admitting it was a possibility. But still said "contact the manufacturer". Especially after seeing that both materials we identical. The jacket ruined was a $1,500 jacket that was made in very limited quantities. After asking what he was going to do for me he told me again to "call the manufacturer". As an owner of many businesses myself, this owner was a poor example of one who actually cared about his customers and business. He did nothing but sit there with his arms crossed and tell me to "contact the manufacturer". It was 100% human error as again I brought (2) jackets in with identical fabric and one was fine. Please, please, please avoid this place and support another local dry cleaner that actually cares about their work and customers. I now have a ruined garment and he has his 70k machine that cannot possibly malfunction and employees that are immune to making any mistakes. Oh, and an owner who stands by "it's not our fault"... "Contact the manufacturer". Worst place known to man. Avoid, avoid, avoid! I wish I could give this place negative 5 stars! read more

This is one of the best cleaners and tailor shops that I have come across in Berkeley. The staff are consistently attentive and sweet. I have had many of my pants, and several tops- tailored to fit my assymetric body. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the work is excellent. I have brought in all sorts of fabrics: rayon, polyester, nylon, linen, cotton- and the outcome of the work has been stellar. The other day, I brought in a light beige Linen pants to get hemmed, and discovered that it was significantly stained by an old tomato that was "brewing" in my bag pack. The wonderful owner took my pants in the back and used a powerful steam to clean the pants within a few minutes. And: complementary! The owner Rahman went above and beyond. One of the few non-perch dry cleaners in the bay area. Prices are slightly high, but paying extra to keep known carcinogens from seeping into your respiratory system is worth it. My wife and I been using Clean Living Cleaners for 6-7 years. They have always done a good job with all of my wife's work clothes - even with my filthy fur coats after Burning Man. Last week they dry cleaned an old jacket three times to get an old stain out, and didn't charge me any extra. The alterations lady is VERY good. She has done lots of work on me and my wife's clothes, and I have used her twice to sew some small items for my business. I would give Clean Living five stars, but twice when picking-up clothes, they weren't ready at the promised time which was very frustrating, but I can understand. read more

I hate to give a bad review of a family-run business, sorry. A lack of communication turned into a situation in which I spent money on tailoring for an end-result that I didn't want. Granted the price was ok, but turns out what I actually wanted would have cost a lot more, as much as buying the item in question anew. This was not explained to me until after my second visit, after having already paid for the first round. One star for location, and another for offering to give me free dry-cleaning on one item because they realized they didn't satisfy the customer and wouldn't give a refund, though I asked for one. read more

It pains me to write this since they have been my regular dry cleaners/tailors for a few years. The short story: They damaged my coat -- blamed me for it, argued with me, never apologized, never got back to me. . and would not reimburse me for a replacement. It's bad enough that they ruined my jacket . . but they made things much much worse by acting in an unprincipled way: by blaming me; by arguing with me; by trying to justify the damage, and (the owner) not calling me back. . although I was told that he would. The long story: I brought in a winter parka for dry cleaning. I returned a week later to find a huge water stain on the front of the coat. The stain reaches from the collar all the way to the waist. Shocked, I said, "What happened?" The girl who works at the front counter said that after the coat was dry cleaned, they put it in the washing machine. I said, "Why did you do this?" I only asked for the coat to be dry cleaned. I never was asked whether I wanted it machine washed. I bring in items for dry cleaning to AVOID the potential damage of machine washing. Also, the instructions on the coat were faded and it never said that it was safe to machine wash. The girl then got the owner. He came in and blamed me, that the stain was there prior to their cleaning it. Luckily, when I first brought the coat in, I went over all the (minor) stains with the girl who works there, and she put tape on the stains. She had to agree with me in front of the owner that the huge stain was not there before. They said that they would try to get the stain out. But I knew that it was impossible to do this because the stain was clearly a water stain -- caused by washing it in the washer. And a water stain would not come out. A week later I came back, and the stain was (of course) still there. The coat looked crumpled and ratty from being washed in the washing machine. The girl at the counter was very defensive and argumentative, trying to explain why they put it in the washer (to get all of the stains out). I countered that it was a mistake, and that I did not ask for it to be washed in the washer. She never apologized. She said that the owner would call me. I requested this from her twice over the course of a week. No surprise -- he never called back. I wrote him a letter -- and guess what? He never responded. It really pains me that a business would make such a dumb mistake (putting a coat in the washing machine when it was simply brought in for dry cleaning). And that they would make the situation much, much worse by blaming me for the stain; by trying to justify their very bad decision to put it in the washing machine; and by arguing with me. If they had integrity, they would have simply apologizing, taken responsibility, and reimbursed me for a comparable coat. If you use this place, make sure to insist that they won't put your item in the washing machine, if you don't want them to. Sadly, I won't be returning here ever again. A very bad experience, and a coat I have really loved, badly damaged. read more
