My partner likes bakeries, especially French bakeries. On a whim, they popped into this one after noticing it as we were driving by. They came out with a bakery box but decided not to tell me what was in it. Later in the day, they had me open the box. I was pleasantly surprised to see a slice of Black Forest Cake. I learned about Black Forest Cake (Foret Noir) when I lived in Paris. It became one of my favorite desserts. When I saw it, I eagerly dove in to taste it. The cake was good but it did not have the same flavor that I remembered from my days in France. The chocolate was a bit overpowering for me. The slice of cake was expensive so be prepared. Greeted upon entry and seated immediately while on a low season lunch stop. Our server Jesse was properly attentive. Our orders came out so quick causing me to compliment on the speed. She ordered the Mixed Berry Crepe served elegantly over a raspberry sauce. She found it tasty. I had the Chicken Salad Sandwich on a freshly made crusty cranberry bread with lettuce and tomato served with a side of choice. I chose the super fresh mixed fruit! It was all delicious. The ambiance was non-pretentious with some pretty cool decorations. Part of the bakery cafe entrance was dedicated to showcases of decadent appearing desserts. I found the French Bakery on YELP before checking out my hotel down the street. This was 1 of 3 highlights of my birthday trip! When I tell you this is a pure gem in this plaza of my God...believe when I say you could not pick a better spot to enjoy breakfast or brunch at. Don't be fooled and save your hard earned money. Reviews aren't great here but typically it's service and price related with their sit-down meals. I thought, if the pastry are a little pricey, but really good, then I don't mind. We'll, I'm here to confidently tell you they're not really good, in fact, they're average at best. Spent $9 for an almond croissant that tasted like it came from a grocery store pastry box and then $8.79 for a blueberry Danish that was better but had a distinct corn syrupy flavor that shouldn't have been present. To elaborate on the croissant.. It felt like it was day old. Not crisp, no great layers, not flaky. Just meh. Absolute rip off. Have yet to find exceptional or even great pastry on this island, have tried a few of the most popular spots now and none have held a candle to what we have back home in new england and light years away from what you can get out on the west coast. Saturday brunch in late May. They have both indoor and lots of outdoor seating. Menu is large and something for everyone from the breakfast fans, sweets to those who want a more savory lunch. Service was nonexistent as we never got our drinks refilled, never a check if our meal was correct (and it wasn't), no follow up and even had to ask a random food runner to get a check where the server just dropped the credit card machine and walked away - no "did you have a nice meal or thanks for dining with us". For a pricey - entrees more than $20 - brunch meal I expect a little bit of service not just a transactional experience where a food runner drops food and no one ever checks in. Food was mediocre. Warm, at best, was the hot food and the croissant the Ahi Tuna club was served on was a frozen pre-made deal that was not fresh or even toasted warm for a club. Absolutely charming French bakery! A party of four, with four happy customers! My husband and I ordered the Black Forest latte, croque madame and a side of bacon. Everything was deliciously prepared and plated! The portions are very generous. We also visited last year and had the same lovely waiter, wish I had his name to post kudos! Recognized other workers as well, which means they must have a low turnover . They offer indoor and outdoor seating and both are ample! The quiche is a must here! Any of them are fantastic! Pastries are delicious! Chicken salad sandwich on the cranberry apricot bread is perfectly paired. Lattes are just right with plenty of twists to flavor them with. Overall was a great experience they just need to be a little better at clearing the tables as you go through service. I always look forward to a trip here. My very favorite is chicken Salas on their apricot and cranberry bread. And it's so big that my husband and I share it. Add a glass of wine and it's a perfect lunch. Sadly, they close after lunch so don't plan dinner here. Also, buy some of the beautiful desserts and pastries before leaving. We waited a long time for our food and watched others wait a long time in line to get bakery service and no one working there really seemed to care. Quiche is a staple for a French bakery. I expected them to know how long to reheat their quiche before serving. (They didn't get that right). We shared a piece of carrot cake. I would take a pass on the carrot cake. Not memorable at all....the cake lacked flavor and the frosting lacked flavor. I ordered an extra hot latte. It was not served extra hot. I sat and watched the server make it and set it right in front of me so I know it was not sitting. They have a pretty extensive menu so maybe I just need to try more things. Drove several miles just to try a pastry from French Pastry. I was happy to see there was no waiting. When I entered the store I went over to the pastry cabinet and previewed the selections. Waited forever. Decided to get a pastry to go. As we were leaving husband said let's just eat it here. So we sat at this little two seater next to the pastry cabinet thinking it's available. As we were eating this very rude owner/mgr came over and told us, between bites, we could not sit there because that was only for dine in. Told us we had to leave. Cute little spot in shelter cover. Me and three others walked in for a girls brunch around 10 with no wait. We opted to sit outside and the only issue we had was that the tables needed to be wiped down. There was syrup on our table and menus as well as a few crumbs here and there. To drink, we got the lavender bliss. This wasn't on the physical menu but was available on their online website so they were able to accommodate us. Really recommend this drink to anyone who's a fan of a more floral drink. I got the grilled chicken which came with a side salad. I really enjoyed the salad and appreciated that they put the dressing on the side. The sandwich was pretty filling so I ended up taking half to go but highly recommend anyone coming here to get a bread based meal since I felt the bread was top notch. The coffee and bread here are stellar! We stopped in to this brunch spot with a large group of 10 and they were able to seat us inside right away. Unfortunately the table they sat us at was dirty, with crumbs everywhere, and I don't know if the server heard us when we asked if the table could be cleaned because he didn't clean it. We wound up using our napkins to wipe the crumbs away ourselves. I ordered a Honey Lavender Latte with almond milk. The lattes here are served with coffee ice cubes, an excellent touch to keep the drinks from getting watered down. My latte was delicious, and stayed flavorful for the duration of our meal. Hands down the best coffee I had during my stay in Hilton Head. For my meal, I ordered the Caprese Salad Hot Sandwich, in spite of its staggering price tag (almost $19 for a sandwich??) and was glad I did. Though I still think it is overpriced, the sandwich was excellent. I was surprised when the sandwich came out and appeared to be kind of a small portion--it was exactly as much sandwich as I wanted, but for the price I expected more. That being said, it was delicious and the bread was the star of the show. If not for the crumb debacle and the surprisingly steep prices, this would have absolutely been a 5-star experience. A few tiny pieces of celery. Nothing else. It wouldn't hold a candle to Chicken Salad Chick's which is 1/3 the price. The steamed veggies were way overcooked and over seasoned with thyme (I think). This place was great. The service was quick, the staff is kind, and the food was good. I got the spicy omlette, which although good, wasn't spicy lol. I have always loved the French Bakery for their baked goods and decided this past time to sit down and have lunch . I ordered a Salad Nicoise since the place prides itself on being French. Unfortunately, it was not good. The arugula base was old with many yellow leaves and bland tasting. There were two pieces of asparagus but no Haricots vert. Also, there were no olives or potatoes. The grilled vegetables were scarce and the hard boiled egg was small. The tuna although was delicious. Big disappointment considering how delicious their pastries are. We were running around the island after walking the beach and I really felt like something different. We searched Yelp and the French Bakery felt like it was a good fit. We were seated inside, immediately, which is always nice. The service was good and our waiter was quick to bring us our water and food. I had the Quiche Lorraine and it was really good. I feel like you never get enough but I'm full after eating it so it's probably the right amount. The salad was really fresh and tasty. My wife had a sandwich which was also very good. Their coffee is excellent. That really matters to us caffeine addicts. The chocolate moose ball was also a great way to end the meal. After walking 3.5 miles on the beach we felt it was deserved.
