As my friend Leonie and I was served by the waiter, we looked at him intensely. Leonie had just pointed out the duck that shook its head to the music and we were laughing about the floating animal that had a head-shaking party on the lake. We had started laughing and both noticed that the waiter had also eyed the duck. He had been at our table twice before. Both times he had an air of someone desperate to quit his job and join the circus of sullen poets. Would the duck make him smile. It seemed as if it would. A small draw by the corner of his mouth suggested a smile, while Leonie and I held our breath. Would this be it? Would he pour his joy out into the world? Would we be lucky enough to see it? Alas, no. We should not be so lucky. The waiter lowered his gaze as the duck headbanged away from us. And that was the saddest thing about Freischwimmer. Not that the food was suspiciously quick or that that Leonie saw a spider, which caused her to scream and feel embarrassed for the rest of the evening. No. The saddest thing about Freischwimmer was that the employees all looked like the joy was suckered out of them the moment they entered the place. But we got drunk, the food was just above mediocre and the water was beautiful.

I am reviewing this place based on an early spring evening indoors. During March they are open only inside and the inside is just the most comfortable place one can imagine. The prices are a bit higher but one can still find a good deal. I had a red wine (the cheapest on the menu), which was pretty tasty and just fit the mood. And towards the end of the night, I ordered a standard coffee serviced with a pot of milk. It was nice and creamy. It is rustic, wooden and very intimate. The windows are large and one can look out at the water. Even on a rainy day this place becomes just so charming because of the rain hitting the water and the window and the fireplace is lit. During the summer this area that we have been to, is closed and only the open area is open. According to the waitress, the outdoor area provides about 500 spaces to sit. This place also has brunch during the weekend and summer months. I will be coming back in the summer to see the other side of this place.

Pork roast with gravy, potatoes, and green beans. So great!

I had the pork roast it was amazing. Nice locale. Read other people's comments, my food was stellar. Also had the guacamole cream cheese dip. To die for so good. Get these two things I promise they won't disappoint!

Went here for brunch today with family. We got a seat in the shade along the canal (perfect spot). We placed drink orders and went to the buffet (14€). The server said maybe 2 words the time and brought us the 2nd water we asked for as we were already trying to pay and leave. The food was great though, tons to choose from like pastries, salads, meats and mushroom ravioli. The iced espresso macchiato was great. The toilet didn't have any toilet paper, tons of random writing on the wall and was very crammed. Also the lighting above our table was covered in spider webs which really grossed me out!

I am a great fan of brunch as it's a good excuse to pig out on the theory that one is actually eating two meals at once. Freischwimmer is a cool rickety and haphazard sort of place, and rather long as it stretches some 70-80 metres along the side of a canal. I finally got a table next to the canal and settled down for some serious chatting and eating. Regarding the food, well, let's just say that Michelin stars are never going to get awarded here. But there is plenty of food on the buffet though replenishments are somewhat on the slow side. The best part is watching the world mosey by at the edge of the canal and it's a great relaxing place on a spring or summer Sunday. It is also ridiculously cheap and eventually we moved on to beers after the coffee and I still could not spend more than 25 Euro for a nice Sunday outing.

never been there personally, but a beautiful waterside location. Nice for eating. Little bit far out (depends on where you start)

We popped in here for a few drinks after eating at White Trash Fast Food across the canal and enjoyed the laid-back vibe.

First of all, surprised that whereas there are currently around a hundred reviews in German, this…read moreis the first in English - probably a bit off the beaten track for visitors? Anyway, there are many reasons to make the trek along the Spree through Treptower Park, not least the pleasant location on the river which is means it's attractive to sit outside on a sunny spring or summer day; or for that matter in the depths of winter when it's really cosy down in the hold or in the "Seepavillon" directly by the water with a cosy open fire. We have visited Klipper in all seasons, and the food is consistently good, with an emphasis on fish and traditional German fare - decently sized portions at a reasonable price. We ordered asparagus as it was in season, but on this visit they actually forgot our order. We were sitting there 25 minutes wondering what had happened when the waitress noticed, apologised profusely, offered us drinks on the house and made sure that our food then arrived as quickly as possible - with an extra portion of fish for good measure. So let's agree that this was unusually friendly and excellent service (which is not always the case in Berlin!) Overall: Klipper comes strongly recommended - we'll be back.

We came here after having been turned away by an Indonesian restaurant that was "full for the night". We are so glad that fate brought us here instead of that Indonesian restaurant!! What were we even thinking anyway -- forget the Indonesian food, get the local specialities!! Ordered the schnitzel as well as the meatballs and both were executed perfectly. Schnitzel was hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside -- not overly salty either. Meatballs were juicy and packed with flavor from the minced onions that they had mixed in. The beer (we ordered a Pilsner) was the best that we had tried in all of the Berlin and Dresden restaurants that we visited. I believe it is from some small private brewery affiliated with the restaurant somehow. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right, so definitely order the house beer. Super cozy seating (you'll probably be sharing a table with other guests) and packed all night long but amazing vibes and casual comfort food. Would come back if I ever visit Berlin again!

We tried to go to a nearby Greek place but they were full and kind of rude too. We walked over here and the place was empty at 6:30 pm so a bit worried. No need. The draft Pilsner was very excellent and the food was outstanding and reasonably priced. We got pork schnitzel and meatballs and it was really very tasty. Would recommend!

Franconian food in the heart of former east Berlin's Friedrichshain neighborhood. Franconian…read morecuisine is a specific regional identity belonging to the region of Franconia. Think Southern Germany. It is a subtype of German cuisine with many similarities to Bavarian cuisine and Swabian cuisine. I happen to have been to these regions many times over and love the food, though I did know the provinces and the proper names. The smoked pork is roasted to crisp, the sausage orgy dish is funny named and is not for the faint of the heart (it's huge in size). Fried chicken is better than most of American fried chicken, and the potato pancakes are perfect. They are all HUGE in portion and completely wonderful for left over take-outs. When I checked in it had a check in special, but seeing that I did not need that special for coffee, the store owner brought me local sausages as free appetizers. It was quite lovely. For dessert, they had kaiserschmarrn and I ordered it, which I've not had since Prague 2012 and Austria 2001. So that was nice surprise. Fantastic service to boot. The price is extremely reasonable (for Americans anyway). Sometime like this will likely double in price in America. Can't finish them all so I had box to take away. The place attract tourists for reasons I don't know. Or maybe everyone just read the English Yelp reviews and come here. I would love to come back for more.

I sat on the patio and would recommend this, weather permitting. Next door is a little flower shop so my table was adjacent to some nice plants which really added to it all. I ordered a beer...two beers.... and a pork loin served with potato dumpling, gravy and a side of red cabbage. True, classic German food. It was INCREDIBLE. The pork was perfectly juicy throughout and crispy on top--it just fell off the bone. I sat there for way too long because I was savoring the meal too much. The service was good-- much better than the tip I left reflected. I think that there was some service included in the bill, but I still feel bad.
