Great German food. A warm and welcoming experience. The place was good to have a conversation while eating a great meal

Totally recommend the lunch situation at this downtown Johnson City restaurant. Between us we tried four of the entrees and four of the sides. We also added the bread and chive butter that is standard at dinner but not included with lunch unless you order it (totally worth it!). Everything was authentic and tasted wonderful. Water and (sweet) tea were served in glass mass steins, a fun touch. Our server had a great personality, checked on us often, and whatever is happening in the kitchen - it ensures hot food that comes out promptly. I'm confident dinner would be equally lovely, but for now I'm totally committed to the most affordable and tastiest lunch in the TriCities

I really wanted to like this place. I learned about it watching videos of Johnson City, and since I love German food, it was on the list. I came at dinner time and was seated immediately. I wasn't in the mood for a beer so had iced tea which was served in a huge mug. They brought out bread to start. It was slices of French bread. The bread was so cold I'm sure it was all prepped up and stacked in a cooler ready to go out. The butter was extremely chive flavored. If you like chives, you're in luck, but was too much for me. For my entree I ordered Sauerbraten with red cabbage and the fried potatoes. The food came out in just a few minutes from ordering. The beef was tender and the gravy tasty, however tasted nothing like Sauerbraten. It was a very good pot roast but was missing the flavors of sauerbraten, which I've had numerous times in the US and in Germany. The red cabbage was awful. I love traditional red cabbage. But a few bites of this was enough for me. The potatoes were ok but weren't good enough to eat more than a few bites as well. This place has very good reviews so either I came on an off night or I was expecting German food which this wasn't.

If you're looking for authentic German cuisine, look no further--this place is as authentic as it gets! The food is absolutely delicious. We loved it so much that we came back two days in a row. The service was excellent, especially at the bar, where we had some great conversations with the staff. They gave us spot-on recommendations, and everything we tried was phenomenal. The pretzels are soft, warm, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Whether you're in the mood for burgers, sandwiches, or schnitzel, you simply can't go wrong here. Pair your meal with an ice-cold stein of beer for the full experience. The décor is also on point--it really sets the mood and feels like you've stepped into a cozy German beer hall. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!

Wow! The service and food at Freiberg's was excellent! Our waitress was a little fireball, rockstar! She knew the menu and explained everything well. My husband and I ordered the Brat Sampler and a lunch order of the Pork Schnitzel! Sooo glad we stopped here for lunch in Johnson City.

Fantastic atmosphere, just downtown - across from our Air B&B! German beer by the Liter and great beer cheese pretzels!

Fantastic atmosphere, just downtown - right across from our Air B&B. Beer cheese pretzels are great (came with three) and German beer by the liter! Prompt attentive service as well. Loved it.

Food was good. Just not a lot like the German food we are used to. Jaeger schnitzel was okay but not very authentic.

The one closest to the road is the covered eating area with the other being the deli. Parking is on a half paved, half gravel lot in front of the buildings. The parking spaces are not marked and I did not see a designated handicapped space. There is a nice ramp going into the deli to make entering easier. Walking in, the ordering counter is directly in front. There is a meat and cheese cooler to the left and a pie/ cake cooler (which also holds the drinks) to the right. This area is small so can get crowded. The only menu on the wall was for the meat and cheese deli items. The prepared foodi menu is on the ordering counter, although they seem to prefer you order ahead by calling or online. There is also a small sign on the counter with the daily special. I was greeted as soon as I entered and my order taken right away. The Reuben sandwich and fries took about 10 minutes to make. The sandwich was well-wrapped separately from the fries. Everything stayed hot for the short drive home. The Reuben ($9.49) was very nice. The marble rye was grilled with plentiful sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing, and cheese. I would have preferred more meat as it did get lost in all the other ingredients. I tried a French fry as soon as I entered my vehicle and found they were not crispy on the outside. The fries ($3.99) were fine and were fully cooked, but I prefer them crispy on the outside. The cash price was $14.25 and was certainly a filling and good meal. Their sandwich menu has several interesting options and the cakes and pies looked delicious. The Whistle Stop is worthy of a stop.

Parking is in a paved lot right in front of the building but there is more in the adjacent lot. The only problem is if you pull into the front lot but don't have a parking space you can't get to the adjacent lot without going back out onto the divided highway. The legal way to do this is turn left at the divider opening and go back towards Jonesboro about a block, then turn around at the next divider opening and turn into the adjacent lot. There could be an opening to the adjacent lot from the front lot but it is blocked off with a railroad tie. There is a handicapped space right in front of door. The parking spaces are not marked so you need to be considerate. This trip was for breakfast on a weekend, and the restaurant was about half full when we arrived. We were greeted as we walked in and told to sit anywhere. Seating is to the left and is all tables with few seats at a counter to the right as you walk in. Our server came by right away with the menu and took our drink orders. She brought the drinks quickly, but we needed a little more time to decide as the menu is decently large and diverse. She returned in an appropriate amount of time, the sign of a good server. Our food arrived about 10 minutes after ordering. The Magnificent Seven had two eggs (cooked slightly less than ordered, but not an issue), hash browns, two sausage patties, two small pancakes, and a biscuit. The biscuit was dry but would be fine with gravy. Everything else was quite good. Of note is the little jelly packets included seedless blackberry jelly and apple butter, a very nice change from the typical grape and strawberry offering at most restaurants. My dining partner selected the meat omelet, which also included toast. The omelet was large and completely filled with meat. It was a very good selection and very filling. There is background music playing which is noticeable but not loud. Conversation was very easy. The restaurant was mostly full by the time we left, but the servers still seemed to be keeping up, as was the kitchen. Overall, this was a good breakfast for a fair price, and we definitely plan to return.

Therefore, it was my decision to give them a try for lunch today. With it being new, the interior was sparse but very clean. You order at the counter and then wait on your food to be made. I chose to do take out. After perusing the menu on the wall, I chose a 6" Philly and waffle fries. This came to a total of $15.00 and change! The full size Philly was $15.00 alone. I then waited almost 20 minutes to get my order. Now, understand that they were not overly busy. In fact, when I arrived there were only a few people awaiting food. Everyone else was already served. (2 tables). They only have 6 tables. I finally got my order and left for home. Much to my dismay, the meal was not what I expected for the loooong wait and high price. My half Philly was about 4 inches long and I had barely a handful of fries. I don't understand how they could have been such a hit with their food truck with such paltry portions and long wait times. Guess the students of ETSU are too busy playing on their phones to realize how long they've been waiting. I know I won't return

I was traveling with my dog, who was a bit on edge from the long road trip and barked sporadically whenever people left the restaurant. Despite this, Aiden, my server, welcomed us with genuine kindness and patience. He was gracious, attentive, and completely unfazed by my dog's nerves, which made an already difficult day feel a little lighter. Because I was dining with my dog, I waited outside until the owner noticed me through the glass door. He immediately came out, warmly apologized for not seeing me sooner, and made sure we were comfortable. The apology was unnecessary -- if anything, it was definitely too cold to be dining outdoors, but I had no other option. Their hospitality made all the difference. As someone who lives in Atlanta, has dined at many excellent restaurants, and even wrote food reviews early in my career, I was genuinely blown away by the quality of the food. The wedge salad at The Red Fork is, without exaggeration, the best I have ever had. The fresh herbs, homemade dressing, and the addition of pickled onions created a layered, unexpected, and absolutely delicious flavor profile. I also loved the whipped pimento cheese served with what appeared to be homemade crackers and locally sourced chowchow. It was delightful -- one of those memorable bites you think about later. Their beer selection is also thoughtfully curated, representing a well‑balanced mix of local and regional craft brews -- IPAs, sours, lagers, and more. It's clear that care goes into every detail of the menu and beverage offerings, all locally sourced and seasonally influenced. I honestly can't believe such an outstanding restaurant exists in my hometown Tri‑Cities area. Between the exceptional food, the warm hospitality from both Aiden and the owner, and the overall welcoming atmosphere, The Red Fork provided the perfect end to a long and emotional day of travel. I will absolutely return, and I highly recommend it to anyone passing through or living nearby.
