If you want anything, make sure you come after 930 because they are not prepared like a regular bakery when they open. I went in about 845 and they said it would be about a half an hour before the cupcakes where ready. So I came back an hour and half later. I got a cherry cheesecake cupcake and a red velvet cupcake. The cherry cheesecake was disgusting. It tasted like synthetic cherry. Like I was actually eating a cherry car scent mixed with candy hearts. The frosting on both were the same cream cheese frosting but they definitely needed to add more cream cheese because it was way way too sweet. Went in trash. Red Velvet cupcake itself was tasty. But these are regular size cupcakes and not worth the price. Was $5.22 for 2. I have worked at 2 legit bakeries and both of them we have to get there a minimum of four hours before opening to make sure we have all the product baked and set out. If not... We wanted to try this bakery after seeing the owner on the TV show "Is it Cake?" Yum, yum, yum! Every cupcake we tried were marvelous. The surprise for me was the frosting sugar ratio- there was just enough but not too much. The creamy texture wasn't overpowered by the sugar, as often happens with chain bakery recipes. The cupcakes look delicious. The reason for the 3 stars is because my order was charged an extra 20% without any explanation and I was asked to swipe my card without being shown the total. I was already charged a premium for the cupcakes. There was a 6% fee tacked on as a supply charge- hello these cupcakes are already $3 a piece- that isn't cheap- yet the owner feels the need to tack on a blind buyer fee of 6%? (Just raise your price.) There was an additional 3.5% credit card fee- no sign posted stated this charge and the clerk didn't mention a thing. Plus, a 9.5% tax on the purchase. (Taxes are what they are- so not a huge surprise.) On top of that there was the high pressure of being asked to give an additional 20% tip for the counter worker putting the cupcakes in a plastic container and allowing me to pay. She became surly when she realized I hadn't tipped her. read more

While the cupcakes we had tasted great, our custom order cake was not acceptable. They provided us a refund but they were hateful, rude, and condescending. They also lied in their response back to my Google review and stated that they told me prior to my order that the cake would be problematic and suggested that the cake was a better quality when we received it than when I made the review- which is simply not true and would be impossible to change the way the icing had bled through the white drip. I wouldn't trust them with a special event such as a birthday or wedding. I will never use this business again and I hope that they make a huge change to their customer services. read more

Placed an order with Cakebuds for our wedding. We left our color options, flavors, and explained we wanted tropical flowers such as hibiscus or plumerias...other than that we gave them free reign since they were one of the bakeries that came highly recommended. Well, upon arrival this picture is what my sister and bridesmaids sent me. Poinsettias? For a wedding cake? That's different. And if they weren't, it definitely fooled my guests who questioned it. I'm pretty easy going and understand mishaps/misunderstandings take place so I let it slide. But as the day went on my sister ends up telling me that they had to "fix" the cake. Apparently when it was delivered the top tier was cracked (also seen in the picture) I guess I overlooked it with everything else going on. When my sister pointed it out to the deliverer, their response was, "Sorry, I just deliver the cakes, I don't fix them." Piss poor response if you ask me. I wished I had a better review to share because the taste was more than acceptable. But the customer service and communication that goes on within the company makes it easier to understand why they've missed deliveries for other parties I've heard about. But I guess we didn't want to pre-judge and just had to check for ourselves. Great cake! Bad customer service! read more

I cannot express enough how unhappy I am with this very uncaring company. I called to Inquire about a special cake for my special birthday. I then sent them an email. I got no response. Saturday I had to drive from Rogersville to Johnson city to talk to anyone. That should have been my warning to stay far far away from them. Katie was the girl I spoke with. She was so busy texting while I was trying to figure out what to order. It seems she doesn't know what to charge. I felt uncomfortable, but I wanted this special cat cake as I am a rescue mommy and had just rescued another kitten. I am normally on the beach on my birthday. Due to red tide and reconstruction I could not go this year. I decided to make it a fun day anyway. So I ordered my cake I cannot eat because I eat no grains, all organic and vegan. I ordered 6 cupcakes too. The order came to 100.19. On the way out Tim, the owner was coming in. I spoke to him. He never even acted like he saw me. I guess I'm a peon to him. I have no idea. On Sunday I found out that this was the last day of Funfest. I had no idea. My guests could not come. I had to cancel. That's when cakebuds showed who they really are. I called first thing Monday morning to cancel my order and spoke with Katie and tried to explain my situation. Once again she was busy texting to find out what to tell me. She was not listening to me. I was then abruptly told I would not get a refund. My birthday isn't for two weeks! I can't eat what they sell because I have a brain. Tumor and don't eat junk or chemicals. She didn't care. I was upset. Clearly I have been robbed of 100.19 with not so much of a care as to my situation. I have sent three more emails to them. I asked them to call my husband. They did but he was at work and could not take the call. There are more hours in the day. They could have called again. They did not. They have not answered my email. I was not given any refund policy. It isn't on their website anywhere so I ordered after seeing their site. I have snapshot their entire site. No refund policy anywhere. I do not do business with any company with a no refund policy period. I would never have even called then had I seen a no refund policy. I certainly would not have driven from Rogersville to Johnson city. They do not care they are ruining my birthday. They don't care enough to answer emails or phone calls. A company is only as good as the service you get. And for the life of me, those are TINY cupcakes. Good grief. At least make them large enough to get more than two bites out of them. I would give cupcakes a less than 1 star if I could. It appears they don't care I will now have to dispute this on my discover card. They don't care I will be sharing my experience to social media. Bottom line Tim has gotten the big head from all of the accolades. Tim and his Katie and rest of cupcakes do not care. It's bad enough I had to cancel my birthday plans. It's even worse they are now holding my 100.19 hostage when I cannot even eat their food. Oh yeah my cake was going To have my two newest rescues on it, Sasha and Gigi. I could not eat it but my guests could have. And two days after my birthday is the tenth anniversary of my getting hit while walking by a drunk driver. I could not walk for a period of time. It changed my life as I knew it. It isn't going to be a good couple of days for me and cakebuds just made it even worse. I am a folk musician who just experienced the most incredible 80th Birthday celebration on my Valentine's Birthday this year, 2/14/24. DEAR friends sneaked a photo of my hand built Dodge Bigfoot guitar and brought it to Tim at Cakebuds Bakery and he created a MASTERPIECE for my wonderful BD Jam and party! EVERYONE who saw the cake thought it was a REAL GUITAR, including me at first glance! He meticulously captured the different wood textures of the Entermann Spruce top and the quilted maple sides. Got the unique DODGE logo perfectly too. It was hard to cut into this incredible piece of art, but the red velvet cake was super delicious! No one will forget this party or this cake!!! I'm really disappointed in cakebuds. I had ordered cupcakes once for my husbands birthday and they were so good. He decided to order a cake for mine and had expressed such excitement that he'd ordered it. He told me he was to pick up the cake on 12/26 after 1pm. When he arrived the woman at the front was unable to find the order. She spoke to the owner in the back and came back to tell my husband they did not have it. He called me super upset. I was upset too because we were so looking forward to the cake. The customer service was just terrible. Most places would at least offer options to bake it for a later date, apologize for the mix up, offer something else, anything. But no. So we have been to this bakery many times and usually it is wonderful, I have had the cupcakes and specialty cupcakes made that were perfect. My daughter loves their cake pops so I always get them for her when we are around. I've never had a problem with customer service and they are always more than accommodating. However, this little cake right here even though extremely beautiful was very off in flavor. It may be due to the fact of everything going on with Covid in our area, but I literally had to throw it away because no one at my house would eat it after tasting it. The cake was extremely compressed and did not have a good flavor and the icing was basically just butter, it had no flavor either. My daughter said it almost tasted freezer burnt. Honestly I wish I could give "cake buds" a negative review. I was looking for a cake for a family members birthday and thought that this was the place to go considering they were on Food Network. I got there and purchased a $40 cake that was in the display that day, it was pretty and looked nice. It was just a chocolate cake with "buttercream" frosting. When it was time to cut the cake and try it, the frosting tasted like straight butter. It left a nasty oily texture in your mouth and was overall not pleasurable. So I called Cake Buds immediately and let them know as a customer that I was not pleased with the cake I had bought that day. They proceeded to tell me that I had to bring back the cake that I had already cut into and tried so they could redo the frosting and give me my refund. First off, the fact that they would take back a cake that was cut into and messed with is gross because I know I wouldn't want to buy a cake that someone already had. So then the next day goes by and I call them to make sure that I would get my refund and I spoke to Angela I believe (the manager). From the jump she was disrespectful, immature, rude, and embarrassingly unprofessional. She told me that I was used to nasty store bought cake and that's why I didn't like the cake SHE made. She also told me that she would have to "evaluate" the cake and if she agreed then she would then refund me my money. So not only was the frosting gross but I was promised a refund then told that I wasn't, talked to me like a child, was extremely hateful, and overall the worst customer service I have ever received. I will never spend money here again or recommend someone I know to spend money here. I was treated like crap and I am out of $40 which is fine. But you would think that a small business like them would understand and want to be nice to their customers, but I guess the managers pride is too big for that. Submitted an order request via website for the date August 19. Had several emails where we discussed what the cake would look like/theme. Owner sent me an invoice and I paid it. I go to pick up the cake today and it hadn't even been started. I leave and get a call from one of the girls working to let me know I paid an invoice with the date of 9-19. This invoice was created by the owner. As an owner of a business, I would think you would take full responsibility for such a mess-up! Instead, you chose to place blame on the customer, who now has a very disappointed boy who was looking forward to a Fortnite cake. Instead of apologizing or trying to make it right, the owner blamed me because I didn't proofread his own invoice to see that he had the date wrong, even when I emailed proof that my initial inquiry for the cake order clearly states August 19. read more

They were offering a special for college and high school students and my cousin had just started classes at ETSU. She suggested we stop by and get some cupcakes. I have never had a cupcake like that before. I got the strawberry cupcake and it was like heaven. 10/10 would eat there again. If I could give this place a -10 I would. Ordered a $250 cake for graduation. Presented pictures to employe. They had almost 2 complete weeks to work with. Went back to pick up and the cake didn't have the picture I had gave them. The MANAGER told me she did want to touch my phone beca I was coughing. WTH, I was coughing because the store was full of dust (dirty) and I am allergic to filth. I'm just really disappointed. Ordered a cake for my anniversary, and it was beautiful. It looked SO delicious, and I was so excited to eat it. But I took one bite, and it tasted AWFUL. The frosting (my favorite part; I even asked that they make it extra thick) was honestly, genuinely, the worst I've ever had, from anywhere. It tasted like they forgot to put in some important ingredients; the best I can describe it is it tasted like whipped butter with no sugar. It's hard to even describe. I could not believe it. Frosting is a simple thing to not screw up, and this is a CAKE PLACE. Messing this up so badly is not acceptable. The actual cake itself was fine, but I just couldn't get past the awful frosting. I literally threw it in the trash while crying (this is a true story). I believe their cakes are mostly for show. If you want a cake that tastes good and that you want to actually eat, you simply have to go elsewhere. If you want a work of art you can display and admire but not eat, this is your place. This was my second try there (I tried them several years ago, found it unimpressive-tasting and received rude customer service), but decided to give them another try since they've been on several TV shows, etc. I figured maybe they had improved or perhaps I was wrong the first time. Never again. Looking through the Google reviews (where, by the way, the owner of Cakebuds had my review removed), it seems common for them to have a defensive, blame-the-customer response to any critiques. Also, not allowing reviews on your Facebook page is shady. Finally, their newer cakeshakes also taste terrible and are way over-priced. read more

My fiancé and I came to Cakebuds today for a Cake Tasting/Consult and we were both very disappointed. The Cake Tasting/Consult was $25 and after tax and fees we ended up paying nearly $35, which wasn't worth it in the end. Our appointment was at 1:00 and there was only one young lady working and helping other customers. She went to the back to get our flavors (that we didn't get to choose) for us to sample, and we had to sit with other customers next to us and couldn't even discuss anything because there were other adults and children beside us. The cake was not good and the experience wasn't any better. We didn't even get a consult and we weren't able to really ask the questions we needed to. The young lady working was sweet and this was not her fault, but we did not get what we paid for and a manager or someone in charge should have been there to devote the 30 minutes that we paid for and help us knowing my fiancé and I were coming in to do a Cake Tasting/Consult for our wedding. We were expecting more and were very disappointed and we will not be selecting Cakebuds for our wedding or for any future event for these reasons. read more

We had the worst experience with this place. We are planning a destination wedding and drove 9 hours for some taste testings. I prepaid $27 for the tasting and selected 4 different flavors. When we arrived they only had a few of the flavors I requested. There were a total of 2 "Cupcakes" on the plate (cut into quarters). When i asked why i didn't just come in and pay $2.25 for each cupcake they had in the display (they had all the flavors in display that they had in my plate) Also, the young lady helping us couldn't even tell me what flavors were on the plate. They said we payed so much because they made our flavors special for us. Again, not even all the flavors i had requested. We then asked to see a manager and they said no one was available, and they would have her call us on Monday. After not receiving a call we called them back and left 2 messages. Two weeks later and still waiting for that call! I decided to write a review after they didn't have the professionalism to even return a phone call. Im also going to discuss the issue with the place that has them on thier preferred vendors list. Im assuming they may want to reconsider. read more

This was my first visit to Cake Buds. I ordered a birthday cake for my girlfriend and picked the cake up just before they closed. On the outside the cake it looked perfect but I was never informed by the bakery as to what happened inside the cake. Once we cut into the cake we noticed the cake layers must have never risen correctly as the layers had major dips in the middle. The quick fix for the baker was just to add a ton of frosting and level everything off. And like I said nobody said a word to me about this when I picked it up or offered to refund some of the $50 it cost me for the frosting cake. There was literally more frosting then cake.
