This used to be a great place to eat. Let me reiterate - used to be..... not anymore. It has sadly declined to the point it ranks minus 3 stars.... service is slow, orders are consistently incorrect, interior of the restaurant is filthy, management is unprofessional, and staff are unfriendly/seem miserable in their jobs. Place is GROSS inside. Like food all over the walls a bunch of teenagers working and not trying to be rude but a loud mouthed adult running the place. Historic Jonesborough dates back to the late 1700's, and you can get a sense of that age when you walk downtown. Old Town Dairy Bar isn't that old, but your sense of nostalgia will certainly be tingling when you visit. I'd tried a few menu items at OTDB, with most of them dairy/dessert based, but also a meal. It's not fancy, but it is good. The link on Facebook will take you to Dairy Queen, but OTDB isn't a DQ, at least not a modern DQ. Whether inside or out, OTDB feels like the 70's or 80's, and makes me think about riding in the back of a pickup truck with 3 or 4 friends and/or family, trying to make sure my dipped cone doesn't melt and run all down my arm. Terrible rude customer service. I went through the drive thru, was given my bag of food, I asked if everything was in there because I was expecting more than one bag. I named all the food I paid for and they employee said "yeah yeah everything is there"... when I got home I did not get my steak sandwich which is a pretty big item to forget and I was definitely charged for it. I called them to let them know what happened. They replied "well accidents happen" very snarky... I got mad and hung up. After a long day at work, I just want to get home and relax and have dinner I don't have to cook once in a while. This was disappointing. Do better! read more

This place is not very clean. They only have vanilla soft serve, which I find very odd for an ice cream place (I ordered chocolate, and the lady didn't even say that they didn't have it). They also didn't have sprinkles, which also seems odd. She told my husband they had cookie dough pieces for his ice cream, and then didn't give him any. Just wasn't a good experience. read more

Anytime I can find a "Mom and Pop" shop that is better than chain I'll gladly tell about them. I took my family here (12/16/23) for lunch. Our food was made to order and cooked just as ordered. The staff was nice and made good recommendations. While eating our meal several "regulars" walked in and it was nice to see the interactions between customer owners. As an out of towner that doesn't frequent southern dairy bar type places very often, this place is legit. Soft serve vanilla is some of the best I've ever had. I swear they are making it with the fattiest of the fat cream or something because it is absolutely the best soft serve I've ever had. On my 1st visit about a year ago I had high expectations due to all the raving reviews. I ordered, after waiting quite a while and they weren't even busy, the "brownie" sundae with hot fudge. Several minutes after ordering they let us know they are out of hot fudge so I switched to caramel sauce.. no big deal I like both. However, once I tasted their "brownie", I realized it was just a Little Debbie cake straight out of the wrapper. So I basically paid $4.00 for a Little Debbie and vanilla ice cream which was crap. Fast forward to this evening when I finally decided to give it another go. They looked fairly busy in the drive thru with about 6 cars, so I opted to go in. I had 2 people in front of me in line at the right register, so after just a couple minutes I was up. I waited for the young man to come back from assisting on the line to take my order, but he never did. Over 15 minutes past and I realized that the people that were behind me were heading over to the other register, that no one was manning when I got there. And that some had already received their order! At this point I was DONE! I walked out to the car fuming and then I realized that the drive thru was also completely empty. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the other person with me stayed and flagged down one of the employees to order and the hot fudge cake was good. My friend also told me that the young man that was supposed to be running the register, that saw we were next in line and decided not to take our order, came back to the front as soon as my friend got our treats. Dairy Bar please work on your customer service it's lacking, and your "brownie" is actually just a pre-packaged Little Debbie. read more

The Dairy Bar is a truly old school comfort food type hamburger and shake joint. If you are in your late 40s or older, the aromas and flavors are going to remind you of those good old drive-in style burger places. That being said, your kids and grandkids will LOVE this place as well. They have a generous dinning room, but I almost always use drive thru. The staff are good honest folks too. The only thing to understand is the food is prepared fresh and the place is ALWAYS busy, so you might have to wait a bit longer for your chow than you would at a big chain but I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

Decided to try something new for ice cream. You would think a place called dairy bar they would have a large variety of ice cream. I just wanted a simple ice cream cone with sprinkles, they didn't have sprinkles or chocolate ice cream. We decided to get hot fudge sundaes...they sucked. McDonald's hot fudge is much better. The staff here was SUPER friendly and helpful! The ice cream is amazing! There were so many dessert options, but the hot fudge cake was so yummy and unique. It's made with soft devil's food cake instead of the typical thick brownie. The soft serve ice cream was some of the best I've ever had. I can't say enough about the people who own this place and the service they provide!! I used to do the dirtiest of all jobs there (towel counting, bathroom service) once a week. Stopped here on a whim after walking around downtown Jonesborough. The staff was friendly and funny. I didn't know what I wanted, so I told the cashier to give me something chocolatey. I got a vanilla soft serve in a cup drenched in chocolate syrup. It was definitely way too much syrup for my taste, but with tax it came to $1.10 so I can't complain! The vanilla soft serve was really good, though! Didn't try anything else besides that "sundae". The place looked pretty dirty, so I didn't stay long, but it was amusing little stop! read more
