This is my bed head! Marla helps me keep my curls so healthy!
Sammi S.

Marla is a goddess, as a stylist and as a human, and hilarious to boot. She is kind, wicked smart, and extremely talented. She provides a loving, fun environment while she literally creates art on my head. She is very thorough in explaining every process, which is always a little different because she is constantly learning and growing as an artist. COLOR: I've always wanted red hair, but because my true color is a darker brown, she introduced me to balayage and copper toner as a way of incorporating that bright red color in a way that works with my root color and grows out nicely. She sets me up for success after every appointment and is adaptable to my schedule and budget. She has gotten to know me and my style so well that she will sometimes suggest a slightly different color toner to try for fun ("How do we feel about rose gold?!") and I go with it because I trust her and know it's going to look fabulous. Even as I enter the last week before my touch up appointments, I don't mind the way the color fades. It always looks natural and blends seamlessly with my natural roots. She understands the chemistry of color in a profound way and therefore colors in the most healthful way possible. Wash your hair in cold water, people! CUT: I have uneven curly hair - some ringlets, some barely wavy guys. She cuts my hair dry (a la Deva Curl - she is certified) so the curls fall evenly despite their differences, and does another touch up cut after coloring, washing, and drying it to make sure everything is still even. She's taken me from a short bob to borderline mermaid length and is honest with me about when my curls are not able to handle any more length. PRODUCT: She isn't married to one product line. I thought I only wanted to use Deva Curl products once I found them, but Marla has introduced me to other products that do a better job of structuring my fine curls without weighing them down. OVERALL: Marla is all about her clients. She is incredibly good at what she does, but she does it with no ego whatsoever. I echo the other reviews that remark on her knowledge and professionalism. She is great at marrying what her clients want with what is scientifically possible with their color and structure and makes sure everyone leaves her studio looking great. I'm high maintenance about how my hair looks but need a low-maintenance regimen (I never blow dry). Marla has given me simple techniques and tips to take care of my curls without spending a ton of time maintaining them. She has been my stylist for two years, but it feels like ten. I just adore her and am so happy for anyone who is lucky enough to find her to take care of them.

Great curly cut! Let me come back for a touch up so I was completely satisfied. Great info on curly hair products. CGM friendly products as well!!

Marla gave my hair a clarifying treatment with a shine treatment and cut. It looks and feels amazing. My hair was so dry and unruly before. She truly works hair magic and give you the tools and knowledge to have the hair of your dreams.

Hair by Marla! (Hair Extensions)

I love Marla's personality and quality of service. I wouldn't trust anyone with my hair but I truly trust Marla. I got hair extensions done by hair and I'm so happy with the outcome!!

Just got extensions & I absolutely LOVE them!! Thank you, Marla!!
Elizabeth L.

I had such an awesome experience today getting extensions in for the first time. I never thought about them until Marla said it is a good way to try color without dying your hair. I am personally a bit timid on coloring my hair so this was the perfect solution! They don't feel heavy, look natural and feel amazing! I love the blonde and the process was so fast! It doesn't hurt, your head doesn't smell like chemicals and if you want to change color, it's so easy! Thank you again, as always, for your great advice Marla! Trust you with my hair always!

Happened to be going to a Halloween party the next day as a flapper girl, so pardon my costume....but seriously, that teal color!!!!
C P.

This fabulous lady has been doing my hair for three years, and for the first time we tried tape in extensions...she worked so hard to find the teal color I wanted, and to keep my hair as long and healthy as possible while still maintaining its integrity! Painless to put in and so very fast, took less than an hour! Thankyou so much Marla for the mermaid hair, I totally love it!

Marla made me love my straight hair and stop fighting it!

Ask the Community - Freestyles By Marla Port

Are you comfortable styling male haircuts? I only see cuts done on women in the photos.

I am comfortable working on all genders. However, if you’re asking if I have a background in barbering or a history of working with clippers, I do not. I hope that is helpful!

How do I make an appointment?

Appointment requests are best made by texting the business number or inquiring via yelp messages!

How much would it be to get tape in hair extensions put in if you already have the hair?

Hi there! I no longer do extensions. However, stylist Emily VanDervoort does and had been wearing them herself for 15 years. She does really beautiful work, rents in the same building as I do. https://instagram.com/ev.stylist?igshid=1110xphznc9g5

Hi there, What is your price range for a cut? I understand that the actual price would be determined upon consultation at the appointment. Thank you!

$70 plus

I am looking for information regarding hair extensions. Approximately how much do they cost?

Extensions are highly variable depending on the desired result, current condition, volume and length of hair, and method of application. Generally speaking, installation (not including cost of hair) is $400. Inquire directly for more accurate quote… Read more

Hi what is your pricing on an updo style? Something simple like a textured low bun with some waves or loose curls in it. Thank you!

Updos start at $85

Hi :) do you make permanent straight in the hair?

Hi there and thank you for your inquiry! I do not do any permanent/chemical texturizing services. No perms, relaxers or straighteners. Predominantly I do texture specific cutting, custom color, and extensions.

Its fearless leader and his team of stylists play with scissors for the shear fun of it, and are the ride-or-dyes you and your hair have been looking for. Nestled into the ground floor of Troy's beautiful Proctor's Theater building on 4th Street, with its highly decorative front facade of brick and marble covered in glazed terra-cotta, it's no surprise to discover that the salon's insides match its outsides. The interior is seriously sophisticated, with light and dark grey walls serving as the perfect contrast against the large floor-to-ceiling windows and big, beautiful green plants that call the bright window seats home. The main floor is a neat little grid of beautiful styling stations, and mirrors, plenty of mirrors - even full wall-length mirrors - except instead of feeling like you're trapped in a funhouse, you're lost at Barney's, and loving it. A fun feature I really loved: each stylist's station is equipped with a mini Husky or Stanley branded tool chest on wheels, including a massive tool chest at the makeup bar. So like, not only does it add a cool masculine feel to the chic space, but I love the message that sends to clients, like, "Yeah, we work with tools, too!" Nice flex, guys. The best seat in the house, however, is in Christopher Brian's chair. Sure, he has a slew of super talented hairstylists working with him, but Christopher Brian speaks hair; English is his second language, and I've never had a bad hair day with him. Facts. Christopher works incredibly fast yet extremely precise, and with the eye and talent of a professional who's been behind the scenes at NYFW. I've long been privy to his next-level hair skills, and I'm incredibly happy to be back in his chair once again. He works in every color of the color wheel, but he's a self proclaimed Blonde Lover/Expert/God, and those are my people, so hair I am! I would behoove anyone with a scalp, and a pulse, to visit Christopher Brian Salon, sink into a luxe chair, and let one of its awesome stylists give you the change you're seeking! In a sea of talented professionals in the Capital Region hair game, Christopher Brian and his team are definitely top-tier!

It took 3.5 hours and I couldn't even get to the pedicure since they were closing in 10 minutes. Thankfully I called the very friendly staff and they provided a full refund. I don't usually get my hair done at salons and I figured Rumors would be a fancier place to get a hair cut and get pampered. I had my hair done there a long time ago and at that time, I got a hair consultation before getting the cut and the girl was very good. I left there really loving my hair, but it his time, when the stylist called my name she immediately took me to get my hair washed and there was no consultation. As we were walking to the sink she asked me what I was getting done and I said I wanted to cut about 4 inches in the back and get curtain bangs and as I'm explaining how I wanted it, she cuts me off and goes yeah ok a cut and curtain bangs. So then she washed my hair and brought me to her chair. She cuts the 3-4 inches in the back super fast and then takes a few strands on the front of my face and cuts them straight across. I tell her the pieces are too thin and I wanted more hair to frame my face so then against her will she kinda takes a bit more hair and then again cuts it straight. Now, I have had curtain bangs before both done professionally and also cut by myself after watching tutorials and when you cut curtain bangs you do it in a layered way. Smaller on the inside and gradually longer to the outside so the fall across the cheek kind of a cascade. She just cut mine straight across. No layered look. No cascade. I literally could have done better myself at home but again, I wanted to get it done by a professional so they look even better than what I could do myself. This stylist looked rushed like she couldn't wait to get me off her chair. Once the cut was done, she proceeded to blow dry my hair but she never sectioned my hair to blow dry it. At every single other salon I've been to, every time they blow dry the hair, they always section it and put those sections up so they can dry the hair properly. This lady was just taking big chunks of my hair without sectioning it and blow drying it so fast and hard she was done in like 5 mins and I have thick hair so part of my hair still felt moist underneath. I never thought that going to a Salon like rumors, which can be much more expensive than other places and choosing a more experienced stylist, that I would leave the salon in much worse shape than anything I could've done myself at home. I guess it's time to find a better salon that doesn't make me feel like I'm bothering them when I tell them what I want to get done!!

It was nice and I was happy. I sent my daughter over for a manicure and she was charged $ 80.00 for a gel manicure. Included in this fee, is supposed to be a hand massage, which my daughter did NOT get. Unfortunately, one of the nails (on this regarded manicure-by Joan) came off either that same day or the next day. My daughter was very upset and called for an appointment to have the nail fixed. She was given an appointment with the woman who specializes in nails and this woman fixed her nail. The manicurist told my daughter that more of the nails were going to fall and she never should have had a gel manicure broker nails are too thin. My daughter was still upset because she paid $ 80.00 for what appeared to be a substandard manicure and called the salon again to complain-she felt she should not have been charged the full 80 dollars. She was told the owner would give her a call to discuss her concerns. This never happened-no one called her. I went back a few weeks later to get my hair done and I did not ask for a manicure. The hairdresser kept making comments about how great her manicures are. She must have given me this message 4-5 times. I didn't respond as it was obvious that she felt like she was right. Apparently, she is in the habit of giving gel manicures to people who shouldn't have them, not accepting any responsibility for a manicure that started falling apart within 24 hours all for the price of 80 dollars. No, I decided to write this review given the response of the hairdresser and the lack of response by the owner. Rather arrogant and egregious behaviour by both. I was happy with hair service, but not even that will get me to EVER go back.
