Must experience this tour! Captain Nathaniel Hutchins aka Matt gave a very engaging Reverse Tour that started at Faneuil Hall and ended at Boston Commons. Great storytelling about revolutionary events, like the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party. He also helped debunk the Paul Revere story and gave credit to the riders that actually helped alert the town. Navigating the car noise, traffic signals, and competing tour groups was tricky in the sometimes-narrow cobblestone streets, so he deserves credit for keeping the group intact. He was also one of only a couple of tour guides that actually dressed the part (Nathaniel was his ancestor), which was a significant bonus in bringing the storytelling to life. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and entertaining. Highly recommend asking for Captain Nathaniel, aka Matt!

My friend and I are in Boston for the week and decided to do a freedom trail tour. We were absolutely blown away by our experience. To begin, our tour guide Jeremiah Poope was one of the most brilliant and funny tour guides I have ever had. He could recite so many historical facts while keeping it very engaging. We went to very cool places. The graves of people like Sam Adams and Paul Revere, and saw places like the building where the Boston massacre happened. If you are visiting Boston, I 100% recommend coming here and taking this tour. Thank you Jeremiah!

Our guide, Francis Treate Paine was great. He kept my teens entertained and engaged for the whole tour. He was lively, interesting, and full of knowledge. Definitely a great way to get a Freedom Trail overview.

Captain Daniel Malcolm at the end of the tour. Kids loved it! Thanks again!

Capt. Daniel Malcolm? Thank you. This was, by a long shot, the best tour I've ever been on, and let me say, it wouldn't even be close to as good without our wonderful tour guide, Captain Daniel Malcolm (otherwise known as Josh Rudy). His humor and knowledge made him the best tour guide I've ever had. This tour was the highlight of my trip to Boston. If you're ever visiting Boston, and have the time, take a tour, and REQUEST DANIEL MALCOLM. Trust me, you will NOT forget it. The history combined with Cap. Malcolm's humor makes this a journey you won't forget. Thank you, Captain! Tour Taken 12/30/24

My family had a Sunday tour for the Freedom Trail, and it was a great way to kick off our Boston trip. This was one of the three tours we had in Boston, and unfortunately it wasn't the best one by quite a margin. While the price was fair, we were in a group of at least 60 (probably closer to 80) others and this weakened the quality of the experience. It became very hard to follow the group leader in such a crowd, and it was also hard to hear our tour guide for a decent proportion of the tour. I would have rather paid a bit more for a smaller-not necessarily small, but smaller-group. Our tour in Salem was much more enjoyable and this was one of the reasons why. I learned several interesting facts. Most notably, I learned that Italian immigrants had taken the tombstones of others to use as a pizza baking plate! I would have enjoyed to walk on my own and read up ahead of time, though. Our speaker was a high school history teacher who brought the subject alive, but her microphone broke very early in the tour. This further finished the quality of our tour.

So so much history in this city. Every corner, every building tells a story. Boston is just so historic and magical to me

Now this tour may not be for everyone, as the title of the tour alludes to.. but if you don't mind the random swear word and aren't easily offended, you'll be like me... cracking up for 3 hours straight. And there was one thing I noticed about Anthony that he doesn't advertise, and may try to track me down for saying on here.... But beneath the gruff exterior was the sweetest guy that seemed genuinely interested in sharing his culture, stories, and amazing food with everyone! We started off at a pizza joint where we got a slice of pizza and an arancini ball. I expected the pizza to be good... and it was fantastic. But I am not a huge fan of arancini and this one had peas in it... also something I am not a huge fan.... But hey, I was on a food tour so I was going to try everything! Thank goodness I did, because this arancini was the stuff of dreams. How in the world could something be THAT much better than what high end Italian restaurants advertise? The last time I had an arancini ball was at a restaurant in Hawaii that won "best Italian food in Hawaii".... And it was only so-so. This arancini ball would make me fly 5,000 just to eat it again! Next up was a deli sub, a coffee shop, ravioli, a pastry shop and lastly an affogato (or gelato if you didn't want coffee that late in the day). Based on the food I received, before factoring in all the stories that Anthony shared, I feel the tour was really underpriced. I wish I hadn't done this the tour on my last day, I would have gone back for another round of everything we tried, as well as everything that was recommended. Heck I may have signed up for the tour again just to experience it all over again!

Our guide, Jake, met us a bit early in the appointed spot. He handed us the ghost plushies we bought (a nice souvenir) and the EMF meters we rented, and since there were only four of us on the tour, he began early. I didn't find him very engaging and felt he was going for "jump scares" when telling the stories. Since it was evening, we could only stop outside or across the street from places we visited (except for the Boston Common, where we met). I did like the three extra stories on the extended tour. I recommend not renting the EMF meters, as we weren't really encouraged to use them. It seems Jake forgot about them as soon as he gave them to us. I turned them on a few times, but didn't get much of a result. It is a fairly short tour; we began around 7:45 and were done by 9:15. Wear comfortable shoes. You will be doing quite a bit of walking, including up a hill (that Jake joked was the scariest part of the tour). Whether or not you take the extended tour, you end up in a different location, so be mindful of that. It's not a must-do, but if it works with your schedule, it's a nice way to spend an evening.

If you've been dying for an excuse to check out one of those lavish historic homes on Beacon Hill,…read moregive this one a try. The tour is inexpensive ($5) and the house is gorgeous, with period furnishings mixed in with modern recreations. I would presume that the tour groups are typically small because it's not one of those "must-see" locations. Even so, it's right next to the Common (across from the Frog Pond), just a couple hundred feet from the State House so the location is very easy to find. Take the T to Park Street, for example, or park in the garage under the Common. The tour itself was led by a very friendly guide. Most of the tour seemed to focus on architecture or, more specifically, how the home changed over the years. I was not entirely interested; what usually drives me to visit a historic house is the person (or people) connected to it. In this case, I heard very little about William Hickling Prescott (a well-respected historian who was nearly blind) - up until the end. Inexplicably, there also was a focus on the American Revolution and how Boston was made up of landfill (neither aspects were relevant to this house). My guess is they were catering to the out-of-towners. Ultimately, I wouldn't call the Prescott House a hidden gem. But, it's worth a visit for folks that don't mind taking a few steps off the Freedom Trail (after all, there's more to Boston than a red line).

Apparently COVID-19 has suspended all Freedom Trail Foundation led tours at the moment (summer 2021) so was looking for something to engage our kids' interest while we walked Boston's Freedom Trail. Let's face it... just walking and looking at the Freedom Trail will be absolutely boring to most kids. Tour guides in normal clothes & just talking to us... PASS! Donning historically accurate clothing and talking with an accent, and website claims of "good at engaging young people"... HUZZAHHH! Winner, WINNER! Setting up the tour over the phone was not difficult at all. Phone calls were returned promptly. Donald Watson was the point man for organizing the details of our jaunt on The Trail. We were even allowed to alter the start time to facilitate additional commitments later in the day. Flexibility! Thank you!! When the Freedom Trail day arrived, we finally met Mr. Watson in person, and he was quite the cheery chap! Donned in clothing that was circa 1776 and sportin' an accent that was easily understood. He took the role of Sons Of Liberty member James Otis. Allowed us some time to finish our on the run breakfast too, before starting our tour at the Boston Common Visitor Center. We confirmed everyone was COVID-19 vaccinated, so... Everyone ready?!? YES! And off we went! Good pace to the walking tour, never felt rushed, always waited for everyone to catch up before talking, answered all questions with an obvious depth of knowledge! Had us all yelling "FIE!" I remember one lovely young man who was wearing a Vineyard Vines belt and my son was obsessed with it, and he graciously told me what the print was called and I was able to purchase it for him for Christmas that year. This time around, it was shocking to me how opposite our experience was pre-tour. I recall in 2019 receiving a warm welcome walking up to the boarding location, but not this time. They were all huddled in a pile by the umbrella, and no one greeted us. I approached an employee who identified himself as a driver and instead pointed me to an attendant who could "better assist". The attendants themselves just looked messy, and it seems the standards went down significantly. We had so much fun on the tour itself, but the end to end of an experience is really what makes or breaks it, and the bad customer service before boarding left a sour taste in our mouths.
