We didn't take a guided tour and we didn't religiously follow the trail, however, if you're into this kind of thing, I would highly recommend doing a guided tour or using a map to figure out which way to go. It's kind of hard to not end up on the trail while you're sightseeing in the city. There is a golden line on the ground that you can physically follow. Very fun and interesting to cross paths with the golden line while you're doing other things. You could really spend all day doing the freedom trail or you could pop in and out of the trail while you do other sightseeing or activities.

What a Great Tour to do while visiting Boston!!! This is a 4 Hour Walking Tour.. no corny outfits just great history learning. We walked all over the city at the Start of the Revolutionary war to the end. We got to see gravesites and battle grounds. We loved little Italy (North End). We could see Bunker Hill but decided to go another day as we were pooped!!! The Service was Top Knotch. Our guide had no cheat sheets he knew his History!!! So well worth the money!

This is the new way to see Boston and to get to understand a lot of the history that goes along with this City. With that being said, it is all about walking if you choose to go that route. There are plenty of other tour areas that offer rides around some of these spots as well. We started in the Boston common area hand made it to you a few locations such as the fountain and the Massachusetts state house. After that, we started to exploring on her own and then just never kind of went back to the trail.

A must do experience in Boston seeing all the historical sights was so cool and so interesting! Starting in the Boston Common and ending at either Bunker Hill or the USS Constellation in Charlestown there is so much to see and explore. There is a brick path to follow through the trail and through Boston north end with so much to see along the way. If you're interested there are loads of guided tours to take part in and plenty of signage explaining the various sights. No visit to Boston would be complete without this experience!

I've been dreaming about doing the freedom trail for about 10 years. Today was my chance I started the freedom trail in the Boston Commons such a wonderful and moving experience. This is something you should do once in your life.

I saw Yelp entries for Freedom Trail tour companies but surprisingly not for the trail itself. I decided to address this lapse with my 7,300th Yelp review milestone because while Jamie W and I could've benefited from a knowledgeable guide, we followed the trail by ourselves with the help of the Freedom Trail app. It also wasn't my first time walking it, and we wanted to follow our own pace anyway. It's only 2-1/2 miles long, but naturally it felt longer because of the sixteen sites we needed to stop and review. Like most people, we started in Boston Common and headed north zigzagging through the North End until we finally reached the Bunker Hill Monument in the Charlestown neighborhood. With only a faint recollection of American history during the Revolutionary War, we found the trail endlessly fascinating. Our favorite stops were the Granary Burying Ground, the cemetery where patriots like Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and John Hancock are buried (photo: https://yelp.to/DRgSGQcbO9), and Faneuil Hall, now a history museum and market hall (photo: https://yelp.to/bKMS3QBggk). Personally I think it's one of the best self-guided tours in the country. Besides, we found time for cocktails at a tiki bar near Quincy Market and had clam chowder at the Union Oyster House along the way. RELATED - Exploring Boston? Even if you're not a huge history fan, as an American there's so much to appreciate about this wonderful walk through our nation's past. There are several apps that provide audio tours for under $10 including the National Park Service. You don't need to have your Maps app open the whole time as you follow a brick trail down the sidewalk the whole way. There were a few spots where it stopped due to construction but it was easy to pick back up. You can stop at places as long as you like and read about them from their website. So much to learn about the road to the revolution and even more to gawk at as you realize you are standing on the same grounds in which our great nation was born, where patriots disagreed civilly, and where freedom was paved. The bridge after Old North Church to the USS Constitution is a bit long and could be troublesome if you can't walk uphill long distances. Be aware that some sites including museums and monuments are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

The food is some of the best I have ever had and they aren't small portions. Come hungry for good food and great stories of what makes the North End a special place. It's a dynamite experience from a guy who is not only a local, but I am pretty convinced he's the unofficial mayor of the neighborhood based on the number of people who said hello (and other stuff unsuitable for small children or church) to him as we walked the narrow streets. You'll even learn some new curse words. Anthony, your tour guide, doesn't hold back what he thinks.

Now this tour may not be for everyone, as the title of the tour alludes to.. but if you don't mind the random swear word and aren't easily offended, you'll be like me... cracking up for 3 hours straight. And there was one thing I noticed about Anthony that he doesn't advertise, and may try to track me down for saying on here.... But beneath the gruff exterior was the sweetest guy that seemed genuinely interested in sharing his culture, stories, and amazing food with everyone! We started off at a pizza joint where we got a slice of pizza and an arancini ball. I expected the pizza to be good... and it was fantastic. But I am not a huge fan of arancini and this one had peas in it... also something I am not a huge fan.... But hey, I was on a food tour so I was going to try everything! Thank goodness I did, because this arancini was the stuff of dreams. How in the world could something be THAT much better than what high end Italian restaurants advertise? The last time I had an arancini ball was at a restaurant in Hawaii that won "best Italian food in Hawaii".... And it was only so-so. This arancini ball would make me fly 5,000 just to eat it again! Next up was a deli sub, a coffee shop, ravioli, a pastry shop and lastly an affogato (or gelato if you didn't want coffee that late in the day). Based on the food I received, before factoring in all the stories that Anthony shared, I feel the tour was really underpriced. I wish I hadn't done this the tour on my last day, I would have gone back for another round of everything we tried, as well as everything that was recommended. Heck I may have signed up for the tour again just to experience it all over again!

Our guide, Jake, met us a bit early in the appointed spot. He handed us the ghost plushies we bought (a nice souvenir) and the EMF meters we rented, and since there were only four of us on the tour, he began early. I didn't find him very engaging and felt he was going for "jump scares" when telling the stories. Since it was evening, we could only stop outside or across the street from places we visited (except for the Boston Common, where we met). I did like the three extra stories on the extended tour. I recommend not renting the EMF meters, as we weren't really encouraged to use them. It seems Jake forgot about them as soon as he gave them to us. I turned them on a few times, but didn't get much of a result. It is a fairly short tour; we began around 7:45 and were done by 9:15. Wear comfortable shoes. You will be doing quite a bit of walking, including up a hill (that Jake joked was the scariest part of the tour). Whether or not you take the extended tour, you end up in a different location, so be mindful of that. It's not a must-do, but if it works with your schedule, it's a nice way to spend an evening.

The tour is inexpensive ($5) and the house is gorgeous, with period furnishings mixed in with modern recreations. I would presume that the tour groups are typically small because it's not one of those "must-see" locations. Even so, it's right next to the Common (across from the Frog Pond), just a couple hundred feet from the State House so the location is very easy to find. Take the T to Park Street, for example, or park in the garage under the Common. The tour itself was led by a very friendly guide. Most of the tour seemed to focus on architecture or, more specifically, how the home changed over the years. I was not entirely interested; what usually drives me to visit a historic house is the person (or people) connected to it. In this case, I heard very little about William Hickling Prescott (a well-respected historian who was nearly blind) - up until the end. Inexplicably, there also was a focus on the American Revolution and how Boston was made up of landfill (neither aspects were relevant to this house). My guess is they were catering to the out-of-towners. Ultimately, I wouldn't call the Prescott House a hidden gem. But, it's worth a visit for folks that don't mind taking a few steps off the Freedom Trail (after all, there's more to Boston than a red line).

Apparently COVID-19 has suspended all Freedom Trail Foundation led tours at the moment (summer 2021) so was looking for something to engage our kids' interest while we walked Boston's Freedom Trail. Let's face it... just walking and looking at the Freedom Trail will be absolutely boring to most kids. Tour guides in normal clothes & just talking to us... PASS! Donning historically accurate clothing and talking with an accent, and website claims of "good at engaging young people"... HUZZAHHH! Winner, WINNER! Setting up the tour over the phone was not difficult at all. Phone calls were returned promptly. Donald Watson was the point man for organizing the details of our jaunt on The Trail. We were even allowed to alter the start time to facilitate additional commitments later in the day. Flexibility! Thank you!! When the Freedom Trail day arrived, we finally met Mr. Watson in person, and he was quite the cheery chap! Donned in clothing that was circa 1776 and sportin' an accent that was easily understood. He took the role of Sons Of Liberty member James Otis. Allowed us some time to finish our on the run breakfast too, before starting our tour at the Boston Common Visitor Center. We confirmed everyone was COVID-19 vaccinated, so... Everyone ready?!? YES! And off we went! Good pace to the walking tour, never felt rushed, always waited for everyone to catch up before talking, answered all questions with an obvious depth of knowledge! Had us all yelling "FIE!"
