This is a Hidden Gem dive bar with an excellent trivia night on Monday. The bartender's choice shots are fun and cheap. They make a different one every time you order and all three of the shots that I ordered were strong and tasty. Hopefully this place doesn't close down. Fred's is a neighborhood watering place with dedicated customers. There are different crowds for trivia and for karaoke; there are people who come for the billiards and the jukebox. They added food during Covid, but nothing fancy ... microwave meals. The service is fast, and the drinks are strong. Great selection of beers, full bar. There is an outdoor patio in back, built for Covid days but still available when the music is too loud or a karaoke singer is overly confident (should anyone really cover Avril Lavigne? I mean really?) The owners have stayed the same for the twenty years we have gone there, and they upgraded the interior during the Covid shutdown. Lots of sports mementos on the wall, and this is they type of place that has a celebration of life for a long-time customer when they die (Leo, a 49er, was a regular on Monday afternoons for many years). We have met interesting visitors (as one couple from Oregon said, "where else can we go once we see a neon martini glass?" ... turns out their twins both played basketball for Stanford, and we saw them a lot that year. This place is a true dive bar right in the middle of Mountain View. Don't look for anything glamorous here. The (regular) patrons come here for the great heavy pours and the cheap prices. When I worked in Mountain View, we used to come here often just to relax (drink), chat (drink), and shed some stress (drink). We would also plan bi-weekly trips to this place. Our mission was to drink excessively at Fred's Place then figure out if we we were going to go anywhere after, which was usually somewhere in Palo Alto or San Jose. After rounds upon rounds of shots were purchased on the company's tab (pre-recession, of course), we would take over the bar and just goof off from 5:15 to about 9:30 and then we would head off to the next venue. But before then, we would drink excessively, talk about sports, tell each other anecdotes from past Fred's Place adventures, hit on girls with missing teeth, make fun of each other, try to score promotions from the bosses, flirt with co-workers, talk shit about certain co-workers that were never invited to the fun, and dance to Van Halen, Def Leppard, AC/DC, or whatever other awesome music coming from the jukebox. We all hoped that whatever transpired that evening did not lead to a phone call over the weekend that informed us that we would not need to come in to work on Monday. Good times! read more

Last night, we stood at the bar for 5 minutes waiting to be served. Eventually walked over to the bartender who was sitting at the end of the bar asked to be served.He verbally abused us and told us to leave because we were being pushy. I was shocked at his behaviour, but decided to take the high road and go elsewhere. As we were walking out he continued to keep abusing us. I've been there before and had an OK experience, but this particular bartender took a strong exception to us. Freds... i wasn't sure what to expect when we pulled into the lot... For a monday night, it had a pretty big crowd! You walk in and there a large bar with a good selection of beer and liquor, even guiness on tap. There is a pinball machine, a golf arcade, a foose ball table, a beer pong table and a pool table - so there is lots to do while you are there. They also have a pretty good juke box with a lot of different types of music, not just the pop top 10. There was a pretty wide variety of people in the bar - a bunch of college aged people in their early 20s, some older folks and then some other people that seemed to be in their late 20s/early 30s - just about everyone in the place seemed like they were regulars. There was also the one standard creepy older dude at the bar who was drunk off of bud light making uncomfortable sexual remarks and muttering to himself. The best nights to come here are Monday and Wednesday. Wednesday is great because the MogoBBQ truck comes along. It's hard to beat a short-rib burrito plus a nice, cold beer. Monday, however, takes the cake. "Gay Music Monday" is a well-established tradition at Fred's. DJ Bleary is spinning the most embarrassing music known to man. I've sunk to a new low. No, really, I have. I don't understand how I let my friend drag me to such places. Anyways. so, yes, this sports bar has wifi. The literally bought a Linksys router and plugged it into their internet connection. I mean, sure, leave it unencrypted for the customers and leave the SSID named "linksys" so people can easily hack it. I thought about toying around with it and changing the accounts, but that would be mean, right? *sigh* I'm a little baffled that no one has batted an eye with me bringing a laptop in here. The place is a little crowded, but that's because of the way the islands are set up. The drinks seem to be cheap: $5 pint of Guiness, $3.50 vodka tonic. The bartender was nice. The crowd is mixed with older guys who obviously have been going here for ages, college kids, and whatever you want to throw into the melange. There are a few TVs scattered around, but not nearly as many as St. Stephen's Green. They also have an arcade, foosball table, and pool table. The decor is a bunch of sports memorabilia. I LOVE FRED'S!! I live over off of Rengstorff, and for about a year since moving out here, I would drive by Fred's, curious about what it was like inside. A couple of months ago, I rallied my boyfriend and our other friend to go, and we were NOT disappointed. This is not the place to go to be seen. It also seems like it is not the place to find your one-night stand. This is the place to go to just to hang out with friends and have some drinks. It is a bit of a dive bar, although not as divey and sketchy as other bars I've been to, but I can see how if you're used to Santana Row, this is much divier than what you might be used to. No matter how many drinks my friends and I order here, the tab always seems to average out to $5/drink. I am not going to complain about that. That is cheap! My boyfriend got pretty hammered one night and couldn't remember if he closed his tab or even tipped. When we went back the next time, the bartender, I think it must have been Paul based upon other people's descriptions of what Paul and Chang look like, helped guestimate how much my boyfriend's tab would have been. It came out to $5/drink and based upon the credit card charges, my boyfriend remembered to leave a good tip even in his drunken state. Every single time I've gone, Paul has been the bartender with the exception of one time. The first time I went to Fred's, Chang was the bartender, and he seemed friendly enough to me. He got us our drinks in a timely mannger, and he even helped decide if my friend's hairline has receded at all since his license photo was taken back in high school. I'm not sure why people have complained about him in their reviews, but he seems alright to me. I wouldn't take him as a warm, bubbly sort though, but that's okay. At any rate, I've made numerous trips back to Fred's and introduced other friends to it. We all love it, and if we could pull our lives together more, we'd like to regularly have Friday's at Fred's. We came here for the first time yesterday night. Some friends of ours love this bar so we thought we would check it out. Definately divey, but not in a bad way. Just a lot of old folks hanging out at the bar. We went straight for the pinball which kept us entertained for a while. It was a nice enough place. I feel that if there was a bar like this close to our house, I would defenately be there all the time. Minus one for the following reasons: 1) Display board on pinball was broken. 2) The old guy playing at the pool table next to me had a lot of ass crack showing. I noticed this when I looked over and saw him bent over taking a shot. Five inches of uncovered old man ass crack. I was seriously bothered by this. I went here last night for a friend's birthday party, which might immediately tell you something about Fred's, right? Like, it's an awesome place to have a party? I'll give Fred's it's well deserved props. It's been around for a long time and has some great sports memorabilia on the walls. There's a well kept pool and foosball table, which my friends surrounded almost the entire night. The drinks are reasonably priced and the bartender was friendly. Let's face it. It has several strikes against it. It's in Mountain View. It's surrounded by automotive shops. When I arrived around 10:30pm on a Friday night, the only noise were my loud friend's playing foosball. There were around 20 other people at the bar, but it was like I was walking into a coffee shop. So when my friends eventually got quiet when they all took shots, it was uncomfortably silent. And I don't want that from a bar! Granted, it did get better around midnight, but Fred's just doesn't seem to have the draw like some of the other bars on the much more active Castro Street. So go here if you must, but don't go out of your way to get here. read more

Fred's is a dive bar with good entertainment. They have darts, a pool table, a pinball machine, TV's and other arcade games. There's also a jukebox where you can pay a couple bucks to play a bunch of songs. It's pretty spacious inside with dining/booth seating and bar seating. There's a pretty large parking lot that spans the front and back of the bar with entrances on both sides. People that frequent this bar are pretty cool and very friendly. I mostly come to hang out with friends and play pinball. They have a Star Trek pinball machine here that is in excellent condition. It's right by the front of the bar next to a huge collection of travel-sized alcohol bottles (which are fun to look at). There isn't a ton of space behind and next to the pinball machine but enough to do what you need to do. I like that this place isn't super crowded and there's a lot of options of what you want to do while you're there. read more

If you like slow service with a bad attitude then this would be the place for you. There are twenty or more people that do not come here anymore for one or more reasons but I can tell you most of them don't drink here because of Chang! Paul, partner/owner, on the other hand is a gentleman. Don't waste your time, that "Chang" demeanor fills the stagnant air in that grungy shack as it infects the patrons with the same. Let me reiterate; If you like slow service with a bad attitude and love to argue with strangers while enjoying your beverage then this is the place for you. If you like class and conversation with good people then try Dan Brown's Lounge, Mervin's, or Rudy's. Fred's is a pretty cool little dive bar. Monday nights they have a trivia game that starts at 7:30. This game and it's host is not for the weak. It's a bit raunchy but all in good fun. Do not come hungry as there is no kitchen. The group I was with brought in pizza and snacks so I'm going to assume that is ok. There was a pool table, incase you are into that sort of thing. It's a pretty big bar so the service is not fast when it's busy but the bartender is pretty cool, if you are cool to him. He remembered my drink after the first order and all I had to do is give him a glance and he knew what I wanted... to drink folks... what I wanted to drink!! anyhooooo! Great Dive bar in an area where houses start at $1.5 million. It is definitely a hidden hot spot.

We first discovered Fred's last year because it was a 5-minute walk from my house, and I must say, Fred's is always good times. The bartenders are friendly, and the drinks are cheap. A shot of top shelf liquor (Patron, Grey Goose) is $5, and the amount they pour is way more than a single shot -- might even be two. There's a fantastic juke box with great music, a pool table, and they always have a variety of good games on TV. There's also some pretty cool sports memorabilia on the walls. We just had a surprise party for my boyfriend here last night, and I called ahead to make sure it was OK to bring outside food and embarrassing balloons. The guy on the phone was SUPER nice and welcoming. He told us we could bring whatever we wanted, other than drinks, of course, and to come on down. When we got there, the staff was very accommodating, and they even cleaned up after us, while we were partying. One of the bartenders - the older gentleman - was nice enough to come up and thank us for coming in. I do get that some people may not like Fred's because it isn't really a place you come to mingle with other young, hot singles. Although, last night, there was quite a crowd, so perhaps Friday happy hours are your best bet for meeting people if that's what you're up for. But, if you're you're just looking for a low-key place to relax with friends and have a good, strong drink, Fred's is definitely a great choice!! read more

My wife and I randomly decided to check this place out after having driven by it many times and laughed at its "old timey" martini glass sign. We pulled up and thought that it might be empty since there were no cars out front, but it wasn't (turns out people who "know" park in the back). We ended up playing a couple rounds of darts. The heisman selection show was on (Toby Gehart was a nominee so everyone was watching). Nice big screens. I found the other patrons to be generally friendly and even started chatting with some of them about Toby while waiting for a drink. I'm raising the bar here and going with 4 stars. Lemme break it down for you one star at a time. First, Fred's has been around for 40 years. In the heart of start-up land, any business that has been chugging along for that long without getting acquired or running out of VC money is keepin it real. Second, they keep their product portfolio clean and simple. Beer and hard liq. Sometime in about 1962 they diversified slightly and augmented the menu with chips and hard boiled eggs. No need to add stress to an already stressful world, just pick a brew or your favorite mixed drink and have a seat. Third, at it's heart and soul, Fred's is a sports bear for Bay Area teams and their fans. Lots of 49er memorabilia on the walls, reliving the glory years of Walsh, Montana and Rice. The 3-4 TVs usually have different games going on so you can split time between teams. Decent pool table sectioned off from the rest of the bar so you don't have to move people not involved in the game when taking your shot. Fourth, there is a mellow, keep-it-to-yourself atmosphere that is both welcoming and refreshing. You're not getting scanned to check if you have hipster $200 jeans or, on the other end of the spectrum, the evil eye cuz you crashed a locals only joint.
