I was astound upon walking up to the protein selection. I'm not going to say a thing, but you will need to make the trip one day and see for yourself. That is why I did not post any pictures. It's a great breakfast buffet option. I'd go as far as saying that I like this location better than the original one in Plant City. It was a busy Saturday morning. We got there at around 10am and added our name to the list of people waiting. We were told it would be 45 minutes, but it was only a 30 minute wait. It actually worked out well since it gave our nephews time to drive down here from Seminole Heights. The waiting area cleared out around 10:15am so we had lots of room. It didn't seem as cluttered and chaotic as the other location, but maybe we just timed it right. Christina was our server. She was great! She topped off our coffee when needed and cleared out our plates after each trip to the buffet. Yep, we got the full buffet experience. It's juts a couple of dollars more and you get as many trips as you want. Everything they had was great. The temperatures were all good. The cheese grits, breakfast hash, fried chicken, fried catfish, bacon, sausage, and fried green tomatoes were all wonderful. I love a good Southern breakfast buffet! This was good ole southern comfort food. I could have gotten so much more but I just had to save room for dessert. If you are there for a late breakfast, then make sure you at least stay until 11:15am. That's when they pull out the desserts. As someone who has only ever been to terrible buffets her entire life, I've always been looking for one that was at least passable. After trying Fred's though, it completely blew my expectations! First I have to commend the value of a meal here. Considering how most people end up paying at least $20 at restaurants nowadays, I'm shocked that the full buffet experience here was only about $15 (or about $13 if you just want one plate). Since I tried a bit of everything and it would take forever to say something about all of them, I'll just highlight my absolute favorites-- the catfish/hushpuppies (absolutely perfect, muah), corn casserole, rolls (most pillowy substance known to man), and pecan pie. If I had to nitpick anything, some foods like the cornbread and brownie were a bit dry, and also I don't know what was going on with it but the skillet cornbread (?) contained more butter per square inch than I've had in my entire life up until now. I can totally see people loving it, but while it was strangely good my cholesterol levels don't need to be any higher than they are now. Service was great, despite being busy on a Saturday afternoon we were seated immediately. Our waitress had that classic southern charm and explained the whole process to us, along with taking plates out of the way and filling our waters frequently. Is it the best southern you'll ever have? Maybe not, but the service, consistency, and quality considering the endless amount of food for such a low price is unmistakable. I went here with my children and my little cousin and even though it was near closing time, the food was FRESH, well seasoned, and absolutely delicious. Don't get me wrong, the food was fairly good but at the same time it's a buffet and unless you're going to an upscale buffet (rare but they exist) the quality won't compare to a regular restaurant. I really thought I would never be giving a five star rating for a buffet. This place is a true gem. The star of the show is the fried chicken but let's not stop there. The collard green, green beans and coleslaw were all very good also with a few surprise favorites. The country fried steak dipped in gravy and the turkey and gravy have great flavors. The Mac and cheese was good also. The cheddar biscuits and the sweet bread were also perfect. Now there were a coupe of items that I tried that I was not a fan of but it was more of the flavor pallet issue more than a quality issue. I will definitely be back. Come prepared to wait as they were very busy for a Thursday lunch. The servers were also very friendly. Prepare to spend about $25 for lunch including drink and tip but well worth it. It is the equivalent of a potluck supper. Or every big family gathering where time honored recipes reappear year after year. The place is loud. Lots of chatter and dish clatter. But I don't believe that matters....to most. I was good. I pretty much sampled what I wanted, without pigging out. That way I could give a fair judgement call. Lots of the old Fred's standards were there for the taking. Fried chicken, mashed taters and gravy, greens, beans, fish and more. A standout for me was the Ham & Collard Green soup. It was delicious. Quite salty, but very good. The fried chicken had excellent flavor, even though it was a tad bit chewy. You are going to get real 'hands on' with your food. Plenty of finger food, such as mouthwatering ribs and definitely that fried chicken. I was happy to see they still have that delectable Sweet Potato Casserole. It was a hit. It's got a country decor, the place was packed, we waited for a while to be seated. The pricing is fair. The service was good, buffet service doesn't require too much. The food is just okay. There are some places that make you just feel good and this is one! Miss Regina and Florence have brought a piece of them to the place and I always appreciate seeing them when I go! Not only do they have incredible food, but prices are good! Service is always quick and punctual amongst sitting. Wednesdays, kids eat free. They must be under 12 and accompanied with an adult. I was very excited for my visit to Fred's as the location is less than 10 minutes from me and the reviews were raving! It was sad to say that my visit was underwhelming. We went on a Monday evening around 6:30pm. Parking can be a little crazy so I don't know the workaround that. We had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. Our waiter was really nice and gave us good service so a star for that! Food was very limited as there is only one food bar and the other is a salad bar. The fried chicken was fried to a crisp! The white meat was dry so I went to go grab a drumstick but the skin was so fried that any more and I felt it would have disintegrated. Mash potatoes were good and the strawberry shortcake with whipped cream was the best I've ever had! Another star for that! It's been a week. My car's been in the shop for six days and they still haven't started the expensive repairs I need. There are two leaks in the roof. The handle came off my microwave. I could write a country song... or, I could go get some comfort food at Fred's Market. I went to Fred's! I wasn't sure if the full buffet would be open during pandemic times, but it was. They had hand sanitizer by the plates at either end and I believe there were disposable plastic gloves available for handling the shared serving utensils, since I saw a few people wearing them. It's been 2-3 years since I've been here, but it seems like all the breakfast options were still available: scrambled eggs, cheesy eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns and hash brown casserole, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, lots of fresh fruit, fried green tomatoes, cinnamon rolls, etc, etc.... even fried chicken, in the morning. At $9.99, it's a good value for all-you-can-eat. The soda is $2.79... but there are free refills, brought often by the server. I was here for breakfast on a Thursday morning around 9:30 and it was hopping... very busy. I was seated in a little booth, between the cash register and the buffet. That was hectic. But there's lots of other, more calm and comfy seating available. It's cozy, rustic and oozing with down-home southern style. It's definitely a family-friendly place... sort of like being at your favorite aunt's house. I've never been for lunch or dinner, but I'm open to it. Located on U.S. 301 in Riverview, not far from Bloomingdale, there's lots of parking to the side and out back. Look for the rooster on the roof... then crow about it, so I can hear what you think.
