This restaurant was recommended by a cab driver and because it was right across the street from the Marriott, hence no cab needed, we decided to try it out. The service was top-notch from start to finish. We had a nice view of the lagoon on a beautiful night. We had some drinks, the margaritas are delicious but not very strong. The wife and I each had 3 because we wanted to feel something but it did not quite happen. The food was good but not spectacular. The shrimp ceviche for me was the star, very fresh and tasty. Not at all spicy although there was supposedly habanero in it (or maybe Serrano?) I don't remember but it was not spicy. The main course was the shellfish platter: king crab, stone crab, shrimp, oysters, lobster tail. To be honest, except for the oysters and shrimp the other things had that mushy texture after being frozen and did not have much flavor. They were not bad, but lacked that fresh taste that we were hoping for. The oysters were local or at least from Mexico and they had a weird texture and taste. I like US variants much better. We got full but still had room for dessert. The platter was $1700 Mexican which is about $90 USD and I can't honestly say that it was worth the money. The "New York" cheesecake was a competent facsimile and tasty, but having lived in NYC, nothing compares to the real deal. Our server Hugo and his helper Jesus were stars throughout. Really great. Very professional, helpful, and friendly. They know English very well. I should also mention that they have a play area for kids where the woman works for tips. So far on this trip we've been to Mamazzita, Porfirio's, Tora, and Rosa Negra, so the bar was set high. Unfortunately, Fred's fell a bit short. Drinks were way too syrupy and sweet. One of our friends went here a a few years ago so recommended we try this place since we're in Cancun. I yelped this place before going and had really high expectations. Let me just say we were very disappointed! We were expecting fresh seafood but seafood platter with the oyster and clam tasted very fishy and not fresh! A couple of our friends that came with us they are fisherman's so it validated what we were eating were not fresh. The calamari tasted weird and the lobster bisque was a huge disappointment. One of our server was rude and I didn't catch her name but we weren't even done eating and she came and try to grab one of the platters. The most surprising part was we we already disappointed in the food. The bill came and we were shocked to see that the total was close to $900 with including gratuity . For one, we definitely felt ripped off because of the quality of the food and we didn't even order any drinks. I am not sure why this place was rated so high but I feel that this was definitely a huge disappointment , over priced and over rated! I went on Monday night with my husband and 2 friends. We made a reservation and were seated as soon as we arrived. We set outside on the patio over the water. It was a nice vibe for a double date. Our server Jose was amazing. He was friendly, quick and he made us so excited about the food and drinks. He made a special coffee cocktail for my friend and I. They start your experience with delicious dinner rolls paired with honey butter. My husband and I ordered the surf and turf to share. We selected the ribeye. We substituted the octopus for more shrimp. They bring out regular warmed butter and warmed garlic butter to dip your grilled seafood. As a side we got mashed potatoes. The meal itself comes with corn and grilled veggies already. Everything was grilled to perfection and seasoned just right. The butter was the perfect accompaniment. The steak was tender and cooked as requested. I did use A1 but it was seasoned enough to enjoy without sauce. The potatoes were good but unnecessary since there was already veggies with the meal. Great orders: coconut shrimp, ahi tuna tartar, salmon sashimi, stone crab, crab cakes, lobster tails, mashed potato's, and any fruit infused mojito (we really enjoyed the blackberry & pineapple/mango blends). We had dinner here Monday night. We were warmly welcomed by the staff. Our waiter, Luis, thoroughly explained the menu. He is a great waiter and took care of us. The food is delicious! We had Caribbean lobsters and grouper. The dinner from start to finish couldn't have been better. It was melt in your mouth good. Desserts were fabulous. We had tiramisu and a vanilla birthday cake. After eating at Rosa Negra, Tora, and Puerto Madero, Fred's is just ok. Don't get me wrong. Service was great. Food was good- but not exceptional compare to the high end restaurants next door. They do have great cocktails to start the dinner. Ceviche was good. They give you a fish ceviche with bread service in the beginning. The seafood soup also complementary was good- advice to add the lime. Must get the hamachi sashimi and pretzel calamari. The sashimi is spicy - avoid the peppers if you don't like heat. My wife had their coconut shrimp. Nice presentation. Tasted good. My cousin had their paella- it was good. I had their sea bass- it was good but nothing special about it. Not trying to go hard on them but my experience tonight wasn't what I expected. Service was ok. Ok means the people were nice but it was soooo slow! It's been 2 hours! We spoke to a manager and she said they are abnormally slow tonight. She asked us for 2 minutes to fix things and it's been 10 minutes. We just want to go! Ambiance, view, food are all good. But I'm exhausted. Dinner shouldn't be 2 hours. Mara and Paola did their part to make things right but I'd have to go again and have a completely different experience upgrade the stars. read more

Fred's is located in the Hotel Zone on the lagoon side of the strip. We had dinner here our first night in Cancun and decided to come back to watch the sunset, which turned out to be a great idea. Our waiters on our first visit, Barbara and Franco, were excellent servers. The service on our second visit was not nearly as good--the servers would disappear for long periods and we couldn't find anyone to attend us, despite the fact that our table had four waiters. Worst food I have had so far in the area and terrible service. Im extremely confused as to why everyone's reviews are what they are. They were busy so i'll give them that but lobster was burnt, mashed potatoes were cold. We waited 40 minutes for our first order of appetizers and then 20 minutes to just order our entree. No one came to our table after we received our food so there was no one to receive the feedback. At the end of our dinner they had the audacity to ask if we wanted free desert. The manager even stopped by to check on us and introduce herself. I started to wonder if they had reserved the special treatment for Yelp Elite, but they had no idea I was yelping (especially because I wandered in wearing shorts and a T-Shirt) and I noticed they treated everyone that same way. After making the reservation, we were seated immediately upon our arrival with a group of 8. We were seated outside on the patio right beside the rails with a breathtaking view...with a dose of a crocodile! Our waiter immediately got us some water and brought a platter with all of their seafood, explaining what each one was and the different ways they cook it. We never ordered any appetizers but was given a complimentary one with fish dip and corn tortilla chips. Soon however we weren't able to withstand the heat so we asked if we could be moved, they immediately helped us out and moved us to a slightly shadier area. My family ordered the Fish Tampiquena, Mollusks Fettuccine, Dried Chilies - Crusted Fish Fillet and mini hotdogs (from kids menu). It took a while for our foods to arrive, but the wait was totally worthwhile! Everything was delicious!! We also tried 2 different desserts (forgot the names), both were great! We absolutely loved the restaurant, atmosphere, food, the view (breathtaking)! The service was excellent, very friendly and attentive. It's not worth the dining experience. We first did not get seated on the patio as requested. We sat at 2 top next to bar in the path of servers. Felt like being on an ant farm. Our server was good, but with her assistants, we felt rushed. Our lobster bisque was OK but barley warm. Crab cake was good. Scallops and risotto were questionable. Everything on the menu is so good!!! We came here FIVE times during our two weeks in Cancún. First of all: when you come in all the workers have masks and face shields. They have hand sanitizer at the door upon entry and take your temperature. Food: I had to try almost everything on their vegan menu because it was soooo gooooood!! I can't pick a fave cuz I loved every dish!!! My husband had the filet mignon and tuna steak when we came here and he loved both those dishes... along with a side of their creamy smooth mashed potatoes!! Fred's appears to be an excellent seafood restaurant opportunity. Personal experience however suggests quite the opposite. The restaurant prides itself and its service of high-end and very expensive lobster and shellfish dinners (approximately $160 US). If you want something more reasonable, I tried the paella and my wife had the coconut shrimp, both meals cost around 25 to 35 dollars US. Unfortunately, my expectations were too high as the paella consisted no more of three tiny clams and two mussels along with an abundance of rice. In fact one of the two muscles failed to open and I had to exchange it for an open muscle to satisfy the issue. The only real redeeming value for this eating establishment, is the gorgeous view of the sunset on the lagoon side and the dining venue On the outside porch. read more

Well worth a ride across town ... or a very short walk from the JW Marriott! All of the obvious (COVID) safety precautions made us feel like our health was a priority for the restaurant - but didn't take away from experience. The food was delicious, and Paola and Jorge provided excellent and friendly service. Really enjoyed having dinner here. As always the Mexican cuisine is gluten-free for the most part so we were able to enjoy ourselves without concern. The ceviche was awesome. My wife had a tuna tartar on a bed of avocados that was probably better than my ceviche. For the main course she had halibut, and I had shrimp that was barbecued to perfection. The sauces we excellent and they even gave us a free desert that was a cream over shaved iced. It was actually really good. The atmosphere and the decorations were awesome as well. The outside sitting was a bit hot so we sat inside but still enjoyed a great view. Although it is a "American" restaurant, we found plenty of authentic dishes to enjoy. This review is mainly about the New Years Eve experience at Fred's. New Years Eve in Cancun can be expensive. Many of the restaurants only offer a highly priced price-fixe menu. At Fred's you can order off the regular menu, and they supplement this by adding an additional $25 per head charge. This still ends up being cheaper than price-fixe at other spots around, and you have the entire menu to choose from. They also offer an open bar package for 2 and 3 hours for an additional charge. All in with food, drink and the cover price this ended up being a way better deal than their sister restaurants (Porfiros + Harry's). We were afraid that vibes wouldn't be as fun -- both Porfiros and Harry's are advertised as having a DJ. Luckily the vibes were still great. They actually had a DJ inside and he was playing great tunes all night. They also brought out a ton of sparklers + confetti poppers for us at midnight, plus champagne and the traditional grapes. The best part about the set up were our seats. We were seated outside in our own private cabana overlooking the water. The round table was the perfect layout for our party of 6, and our group really enjoyed it. The worst part about our set up was the service, which started off very slow. It took at least an hour to get our food and drink order in. The drinks part was frustrating because we were on the clock for a timed open bar. But once food was out the drinks continued to flow out fast throughout the rest of the night, and we certainly got our money's worth. I thought all of the food was excellent. The small plates were my favorite -- ceviche and octopus were both outstanding. And actually, now that I'm thinking about it my entree was also my fave. I liked it all, okay?! Super crispy and sweet coconut shrimp with the most delicious dipping sauce. Yum yum. Figuring out NYE plans in Cancun was difficult. It was tough to find menus / pricing online, and it was also tough to communicate with the event specialists at restaurants. Hashing out pricing and communicating about Fred's was an arduous process, but after a successful NYE dinner and celebration I'd say it was worth the effort. If you find yourself in a similar boat for NYE then look to Fred's. I'm happy I did! read more

She was pushing on ordering the expensive items on the menu. The service was rushed. As the food was served fast. But the salad and entree came almost at the same time. At the end Karina asked us for a review while she is hovering on my shoulder pressuring me to make a review!!! Great place to visit for a nice meal in the Cancún Hotel zone. There seemed to be confusion as to who was taking care of us before the presumable manager came to our table and took our drink orders. We were introduced to our servers and ordered everything they recommended and more. I chose this restaurant because I saw an appetizer with octopus and bone marrow, it was everything I had hoped for. I even ate the octopus cold the next day. Riger suggested the house special lobster with bernaise, cheese and mushrooms. Something I wouldn't typically order, but loved it. Another favorite was a fish and caper spread served with tostones, I don't recall whether it was on the menu, but I could eat that all day. The catch of the day with garlic sauce AND lemon sauce on the side was amazing, but didn't have enough room to finish. The dulce de leche ice cream was wonderful, though I didn't love the shaved ice they offered, but it was pretty. The cocktails were well crafted, food well plated and service was wonderful. Riger and Christian treated us like royalty. He offered a scarf to drape over my shoulder because it was cold and windy. The scarf was beautiful and I wanted to take it home with me! read more
