Had lunch here today al fresco! What a beautiful outdoor space for the summer time. Choose inside with sliding patio doors, complete sun or u see a trellis but protected from the sun. Either way you have every option available to you. And given Chicago's crazy weather as of late. This place has it all. Including a great menu and friendly staff. I had the shrimp tacos today for lunch with tomatillo sauce & cabbage on a corn tortilla. You get three. Including a mixed green salad as well. Definitely a generous portion. They offer starters, salads, sandwiches, fish choices and more. My other girlfriend had the salmon burger which she devoured. And came with fries. Ladies had cocktails as well! Rose all the way is what their drink menu says, and I'm all for it! Can't wait to take the family back here for lunch on the weekend. We decided to try Fred's Garage again this evening and were pleased by the changes they had made to their menu (see old review below). The outdoor space is fabulous, and it's a great spot for diners who want to eat outdoors during the pandemic. Our waiter was terrific too. If the young hostesses at the front desk had been a little friendlier, more accommodating, and better with time management skills, this would have been a 5-star review. read more

I went in expecting good pub food and I got a wake up call. This place had an array of delicious and eclectic menu items. They had mussels as a special, their couscous with curry was phenomenal and the pesto pasta was so much better than expected. There is a cool atmosphere, mellow clientele and an outdoor patio that would lure kids to seniors to hang out and enjoy the pleasant weather. There was also music on the patio which was a nice touch to enjoy the perfect evening that I went there. I have to say this was the perfect place for this part of town, the place is jumping, the food is gorgeous and the staff is upbeat and ready to serve. Highly recommend it!!! read more

I am so done with Fred's Garage. They are so snobby! I called for a carryout order and they said they are too busy. Their kitchen can only handle dine-in business. This happened several months ago and I ignored it. But I am sick oh their North Shore attitude: "Oh, we are doing so well, we don't need your business!" OK! Then you won't get it. Can you believe there is such a restaurant? Carryout is boom, boom and done! You don't need waiters, bartenders or managers. But they don't see it that way. Go F%@ck yourselves! read more

Great time! My family and I had an awesome lunch experience at Fred's this past Memorial Day. The attentive service, the tasty food and laid back vibe and atmosphere made it great. What made it exceptional was the thoughtfulness of the staff. The fact the matter is that my daughter lost / left her retainer at the table. We had left after lunch and didn't return for over four hours to inquire about it. I thought it was long gone and yet to my surprise, they had it wrapped and saved for us. What a cool addition to the North Shore!!! A friend and I ended up here randomly after a popular Mexican restaurant nearby was closed on Mondays. So, Ted's Garage here we come. It's a newer place. It was built in an old gas station so very trendy and causal, but, don't worry, they seriously cleaned up the joint. Their take on food is elevated American classics. They worked hard on the theme or idea of the restaurant so that it all goes together in an elegant way. Creative and fun. The service is ready to wait on their customers. We were promptly and enthusiastically greeted and led to our seating. My friend and I started with the flamin' curds. Don't worry. Not hot. Very good. Different then your typical curbs, but not too far from the real deal. My friend ordered the roasted romaine salad with chicken. It was a nice smoked flavor to a typical Caesar. I had the grilled cheese. Interesting combination of cheeses, spinach, and a balsamic aioli. Everything was was delicious. Not a ton of vegetarian options though. :( However they offer a little bit of everything else. They have a beautiful bar once you enter, and in front of the main doors outside, what I would presume will be, a seasonal outdoor seating area. read more

Based on previous reviews I as surprised how much we liked Fred's. I'm not too into the decor, it's diffrent for sure but not my favorite. The food was good. We both ordered the Chicago cheese steak sandwiches. For me it was lacking seasoning/salt. The flavor was good but I also felt like the sandwich was too light on the steak. Fries and my side of cauliflower were also under seasoned. My daughter was very happy with the mini hot dogs. We felt that the service as very good and attentive. At first they were almost too available and checked on us often. But that's a good problem to have. We went on a Friday night and before 6:00 the restaurant was full and people were waiting for tables. I certainly hope this place makes it, as I do with all of the Winnetka restaurants. If the patio is open during the summer I imagine that will make lots of Winnetka residents happy and the place should do well enough. read more

The consensus among my buddies who go to Fred's: it is open and serves food. Very average. Some dishes are good. Some are terrible. Huge portions that most people cannot finish. Tons of fries added as a side when not needed. It's good to have a place in town where you can get a meal, but definitely not anything special. 501 is much better. Anybody giving this place 5 stars does not get out much. So we will give it a very generous 2.5. It's one of a few options with limited competition so kudos to the management for mailing it in and making a go of it. If you are hungry and don't mind kids in high chairs, by all means give it a shot. read more

A great location with great decor and excellent drink selection. Service very nice. Food inconsistent but they opened not too long ago so I am expecting improvement with time. Poke - excellent appetizer, the best item we tried. Salmon - overcooked (everyone at table agreed) Chicken club - good but too greasy/too much aioli Cheeseburger - kids loved it, I tried it and liked it. Overall - lots of promise. This was our first time here, and overall it was pretty good, with some learning opportunities for the staff. We were gung ho to having the cheese curds, only to find out they were out (time of service was 5:30 pm) I have to say this was not the greatest start we were hoping for. Instead of the cheese curds, we opted for the meatballs with a side of grilled elotes. Both options were very good! On to entrees! We were a party of three, choosing 2 grilled burgers, with fries, and one fried chicken with chorizo gravy. The burgers were absolutely delicious! The fries were a bit weak, and looked over cooked to be honest. The fried chicken dish was good, but I honestly want to try something else next time. The service was good, however each time they took our dirty silverware away from each course, we had to ask for new silverware. Overall, this was a good experience, not great. The establishment is still new and there are some kinks to work out. I would love to try Fred's again soon, to see if there are improvements in service and entree selections. We tried Fred's just a few days after their opening. The outdoor area is awesome, and while they did not have servers on the patio the night we were there, I can see it'll be a great place to hang! It did seem like they were working out a couple kinks, which is to be expected. I had the tuna appetizer and it was fabulous. The others seemed to enjoy their entrees too. I did think the kids menu could be beefed up a bit. For the cost, the portions were a bit small, and don't include a drink, as other restaurants might. We'll be back, though, for sure, and are excited to see how this livens up the area! read more

We came to Fred's before going to a concert and initially thought we'd just grab a drink at the bar and sit down at a table for dinner, but our bartenders Brad and Ben were so cool to chat with, that we decided to eat at the bar. Normally I'd have some nice food photos, but as soon as it came out and I could smell the coconut on the cous cous, I dived right in. It was so rich and full of flavor, that there is no doubt I'll go back and order it again. My husband had the elotes to start, which he would describe as a mildly rich, sweet corn with a subtle Smokey finish. In other words, yummy goodness. He also had the grilled cheese, which was amazing. We look forward to coming back and having another lovely evening. read more

Great patio with fun food options. The sandwiches and salads are so delicious with a grilled cheese coated in cheese on the outside. Grilled salmon was delicious and there is no problem substituting veggies for fries if you're trying not to overdo it. Love this place for a date night or a night out with the family! read more

I went back to Fred's for lunch yesterday and had a very good experience. I had the avocado toast (hard boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, pickled red onion, radish, arugula, balsamic drizzle, multigrain toast, mixed green salad with lemon vinaigrette) and an iced tea (the server very kindly brought me some simple syrup for it), and my friend had one of the salads with added sautéed shrimp and an Arnold Palmer. We both greatly enjoyed our food, the outdoor seating, and had very good service. Another experience like this and I'll be happy to upgrade to four stars. :) read more

My parents picked up from this restaurant recently. I got a hamburger with no cheese. It had two patties in it. I have to say it was the best hamburger that I have ever eaten! It was so flavorful and the meat was so juicy. The bread was not soggy. The food tasted so fresh. I would highly recommend getting the hamburger here. read more

The grilled cheese is way too cheesy it's not the type of cheesy that's good it's more like a chunk of cheese slapped between two pieces of bread. The soups are very good though. Really nice ambience and cool lighting. It felt like we were in a "cool downtown Chicago" spot. While we waited for hostess to return from seating the couple who arrived just before us, we were welcomed by no less than three other servers! Very warm welcome and same nice greeting when we left. Lots of beers on tap which is a good start but would love it if they got Revolution's "Anti-Hero." My husband ordered the meatloaf and I opted for the burger and substituted the elotes for the french fries (small upcharge of $1.50.) The burger was good. Loved the house made pickles! The elotes (Mexican grilled corn) was not your usual elotes with Mayo, cheese, and cayenne but rather a bit globby and lacking any flavor. Disappointing. Husband enjoyed the meatloaf but didn't care for (was it mustard?) between the meatloaf and bacon. Also, please trim the green tops from tops of turnips. We will be back and hope the menu continues to evolve. Salads at the next table looked amazing - may try that next time. read more

Terrible service! It took 45 minutes to get our drink order. My friends food came out 10 minutes after everyone else's. Another friend had to ask for a side of salad dressing 3 times which also took way too long. Then at the end of the meal the waiter lost one of our credit cards. It was finally found but they denied they lost it. The manager was never apologetic through the whole evening. What at all what I expected! read more

Just returned from my second delicious meal here in three days! First had cheeseburgers and rosè for a fun lunch catching up w my niece, then returned with husband for delicious Philly cheesesteak early dinner outside. Both meals were very delicious w crispy skinny fries! I love a plain cheeseburger and this was great with a soft bun, (think pretzel). They are double skinny burgers. The cheesesteak was just perfect w two cheeses, sliced tomatoes etc. (and large portion) felt everything was very fresh and service was very nice, Note: happy employees! What's happened to you Fred's? We used to be able to count on you for a great casual dinner. We've noticed a slow decline over the past two years. Staff seemed less engaged (pre-covid). We've ordered carry-out several times over the last year and have been less than impressed. Food was great. Had steak tacos special, the side of roasted corn was delicious. Cheese curds were greasy but good. Kids liked their meals. Great beer selection at reasonable/normal prices. Atmosphere was good and outdoor patio is great. Food was good too. The disappointment was the over 1.5 hours it took to be fully served and it was my wife's birthday to boot. Even after the food was obviously slow, asking for the check took an inexplicable amount of time. And this is sitting down at 4:30, so not like it was overly busy. We went for dinner and it was fantastic. My husband had the cheese burger and I had the Chicken Philly Sandwich. Both were out of this world. We started with Cheese Curds which were probably the best cheese curds we have ever had. We also had the Elotes as a side and it was delicious. We live 35 minutes away but we would go back in a heartbeat. We sat on the porch. There are open windows so air circulation is good but the ceiling heaters keep you warm. We watched them clean the tables and they are meticulous. Staff all wear masks. We felt safe.
