From the first time I tasted a slice of cake from Frederick's Pastries 30 years ago, to the most recent cake I purchased a few days ago, the quality and flavor has remained incredibly high and unwavering. The consistency is remarkable. I am a big baked goods aficionado- I have tried cakes at hundreds of bakeries in my life, across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. And I say this without any hesitation or exaggeration- Frederick's Pastries' cakes are the tastiest, best cakes I've ever had. While it may be hard to believe, I swear it's true- the absolute best tasting cake I've ever had was not in Paris or New York or Vienna or London, but in Amherst. Not only that, but the supreme quality has been maintained for decades. It always tastes the same, and always tastes delicious. My favorite cake here? The Strawberry Romanoff. Moist, impossibly fluffy, airy yellow cake, delectable and smooth pastry creme, a delicious and slightly tart strawberry compote, fresh strawberries, and the lightest and dreamiest whipped cream frosting you'll ever have. All garnished with some toasted, sliced almonds. If you live anywhere within driving distance of Frederick's Pastries, drive there and try their cakes. That includes Boston- don't stick your nose in the air thinking there's any bakery in Boston that can compare. There isn't- trust me. I've looked. I was told by recipient was very good but next time I have cake delivery will be looking for options. I am in Florida and was ordering a large birthday cupcake and 2 Whoopie pies to be delivered to the elms of Milford asst living for his birthday. Well the cupcake was 4.99 and each of the two Whoopie pies were 3.99. My total was 52.xx. The delivery was 40.00. I had no choice. Shaw's in Milford has no delivery and I would have had to order a 13 by 9 cake for one person and then maybe uber would have delivered. Given the unique circumstances of being put in asst living right before he hit 67, it being his birthday, and me trying to do something special for him, I would have thought they could have cut me a break on the delivery. I've done a lot of my business at their Bedford location but now because I moved to Amherst I use the Amherst location a lot. I feel like the service I receive when I go to this place doesn't match the quality of the products they offer. I grew up in the Southern NH area and we always went to Fredericks for our birthday and celebratory cakes. When it came to getting married, there was nowhere else I planned to use. Susie with Frederick's pastries was awesome to work with. My husband and I live in VT, So we did most of our communicating via email aside from the cake tasting. I am Gluten-free and Susie was able to accommodate a Gluten-less top tier of the cake and the remaining of the cake was a gluten-based cake. We sent her our cake designs via email and it was a spitting-image of what was sent! Our wedding day was very humid (almost 100 degrees in the middle of July) and the cake stood tall, and was in perfect condition despite the heat and humidity!! It was delicious! read more

A picture speaks a thousand words. Ordered a cake from Fredrick's in North Andover & emailed the baker the bottom picture & agreed to have it as a single tier without the cross topper. The top picture is what I ended up getting from them. Called to inform them that I was unsatisfied and all I got was "sorry about the miscommunication, there isn't anything we can do." I don't understand how a picture can be so misleading...very unsatisfied and do not recommend this bakery. Not one to typically complain but based off of the presentation and customer service response, I had no choice. Overpriced, and dry cake. I do not recommend this bakery and will not be going ther. I must say that Susan, the owner reached out to me after my review and was very kind and offered to make another cake or pastries for a future event and we ended up going with a gift card which was for a generous amount. Frederick's is a fantastic place, their little baked goodies are outstanding. The extra 5th star goes for the service, especially when it comes to wedding cakes. Yes, they are more expensive than other places, but it was a cost we felt was well worth it. For our wedding cake we got a simple white almond pound cake with a raspberry inner layer and white buttercream frosting. It was insanely delicious, people came up for second slices, and people still mention it to us. Who does that? Most wedding cakes are just there - Frederick's was a highlight. Better yet, you don't need to get the gigantic elaborate 9-tier cake, they're just as happy to do the smaller cakes as well, and they don't act like you're wasting their time. Heaven knows when dealing with wedding things, having a vendor who will treat you like a human and will deliver as promised can not be beaten. By far the best eclairs I've ever tasted in my life. The custard filling is scrumptious, the choux pastry is perfect--light and airy, the chocolate buttercream is delicious--rich, buttery and not too sweet. Every component is perfection. I was really disappointed with the customer service when I went into the Anherst NH location today. I was picking up two cakes (already fully paid for). when I placed the order 4 days ear I told them I would be there between 2:30-3pm because I was driving from Maine. The person said no problem as long as it was before 4pm. I got a call at 2:57 (I had actually just pulled in and parked) asking if I was still picking them up and I said yes I actually just pulled in. Not going to lie, a little annoyed because why are you calling me before it's even my pick up time. It would make more sense if I got a call at 3:30pm if I hadn't got there yet. When I went into the bakery to the counter, I hear two employees talking about the call saying maybe we should start calling a minute after the pickup time laughing. as a manager, if I heard one of my employees, talking out loud in the public like this, it would not be ok with me. It made me feel like I was a little bit of an inconvenience because I was picking it up closer to 3 PM instead of 2:30 PM. I really like this bakery and their products. I've gone to Frederick's for every birthday cake that I've purchased in the last 5 years or so. As a product of my general chaotic and disorganized nature, I usually end up ordering the cake way later than I should, asking them to perform small miracles in the decorating department with little time. They always deliver far above and beyond my expectations as far as esthetic goes, and everyone always goes wild over how tasty the cakes are. My favorite is the Purple Velvet and order it at every opportunity unless some kill-joy requests standard chocolate or vanilla (which is also amazing). Last year, I called the day before my daughter's Willy Wonka themed birthday party with literally no idea what to ask for. I was overwhelmed and going nuts trying to pull things together. They pretty much told me to leave it to them and presented the depicted masterpiece with less than 24 hours notice. They're also an awesome place to swing by for a box of pastries on the way to a gathering. Their little doses of sugary happiness always impress all in attendance. We got our wedding cake from Frederick's Pastries and we absolutely LOVED it. We got a two tier, small, white cake made "glutenless"* for me with sugar sculpted succulents as accents. Our sheet cake fed the rest of our guests (50 or so guests, and was not "glutenless"), and there was still plenty to take home for all of our guests. The best part is that the super-smooth buttercream frosting was white, but all the icing inside matched our wedding colors! It was a perfect little surprise for our guests. Everyone who had a piece of our cake raved about it. We were so impressed, we decided to come back for our one-year anniversary to get a mini-recreation of our cake to split with our wedding party! It couldn't have been more perfect and exactly what we wanted. The entire staff at Frederick's said they had fun with it, and were so gracious, complimentary, and awesome when it came time to pick it up. My wife's favorite cake is yellow cake with fresh sliced strawberries inside, and real whipped cream frosting (a.k.a. strawberry shortcake, or strawberries and cream cake). I always get her one on her birthday. For years I've tried to find a bakery that makes this cake well, but we've always been disappointed. Either the strawberries aren't very good, or the frosting isn't great, or the cake just isn't quite right. Not with Frederick's! They do a truly excellent job. The berries were fresh and wonderful, the frosting was the perfect texture and taste, and the cake was great. They are the best I've found in the area (Nashua & Middlesex County Mass). Also, they're quick. At the last minute, we decided to celebrate my wife's birthday a day early. So, I called Frederick's at 3pm, and they had it ready by 5pm. Amazing. Highly recommended. read more

We have purchased many times over the years at Frederick's. I went there yesterday to purchase 4 gourmet cupcakes for my wife's birthday. She is an avid Cupcake wars viewer and loves cupcakes. In one word, these were NOT cupcakes. They were lard cakes with a thin outer shell of dry cake. The look on my wife's face said it all - sheer disappointment. Note to Fredrick's - Cupcakes are suppose to have decorated tops, which you provided. The base is to be a moist cake not a mouth full of lard and sugar. They don't make single cupcakes. I've never seen a place that makes cakes, but not sell cupcakes. So I moved onto trying a cannoli and threw it away. They have the shell perfected but the filling is all wrong. It was a flavorless whipped nothingness. Didn't even taste like a cannoli! First time I have to say I've ever thrown away a dessert. Any new place I try out, I order easy as not to waste my money. Good thing. I ordered some frosting to try. When I removed the top lid it was covered with oil which separated out. Will give them another shot soon Have lived in the vicinity of their Amherst store for nearly 20 years but avoided stopping because my wife and I aren't really dessert eaters and we knew it was a high end (high priced) shop. That changed a few weeks ago when we were going to visit some friends for dinner and wanted to bring them an impressive dessert. We stopped by Frederick's and picked up a chocolate/peanut butter cake that was probably the best cake we've ever eaten. It had the perfect proportion of cake and icing and the peanut butter icing was smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet. Perfection. Then, last week, for my wife's birthday, we decided to stop again and got a carrot cake. Major disappointment. Three extremely thin layers of cake, each maybe 1/2" thick with massive layers of icing that tasted like pure sugar. The cake part by itself was very good, but was totally overpowered by the icing. IMO, the purpose of the icing is to enhance the cake, not to be the main attraction. Honestly, it's so sweet we're having a difficult time choking it down, but I'm not going to throw away a $35 cake. Probably won't be back, can't throw that much money at a product that may or may not be worth it.
