Way overpriced if you take into account overall ambiance. Food was very good but these are prices you would expect at high end restaurant. Would not go back read more

For consistently excellent food, beautifully served, and priced right, Freda's can't be beat. This cozy BYOB has been quietly delivering for 20 years or so. Friends of our ONLY get the crab cakes, which they describe as divine, and I've recently switched from the outstanding lamb chops to an outstanding ahi tuna. The husband-and-wife owners must have magic powers, and save room for dessert. Out of this world! read more

I am usually disappointed with the quality of wait staff at restaurants, and god forbid you ask for substitutions, i.e. I substitute tomato or some other vegetable on the menu for cheese, but the waitress was very accommodating and did it with a smile and did not charge more money. I had the spinach salad and it was good. I recommend going and expect to wait a little longer than usual for your food, they make it fresh! read more

Good BYOB spot in Cape May. We came here for dinner and really enjoyed our meal. The mussels appetizer special was very tasty. For entrees, the crab cakes were memorable and some of the best I've ever had. The halibut special was fresh fish and well spiced. Highly recommended restaurant near downtown. Oh, and very good service too! read more

Outstanding. It's a small place with excellent service. The menu listed outside is only a snapshot of what they have. There is an additional menu that changes daily and this is the menu to order from. The flavors are bold and the portions are a nice size. Be sure to leave room for dessert as well. Also, reservation is needed since it is such a small place. BYOB read more

Although the food was extremely creative and tasty, I became extremely ill 15 minutes later. I'm sure it was food poisoning from something I ate there. read more

I had the Shrimp and Scallop Pesto. Delicious!!!! For dessert their Crustless Key Lime pie with Raspberry sauce. Again, delicious!!! If your in Cape May I highly recommend stopping by for dinner. read more

There are a lot of places to choose to eat in Washington Square area but you will not find a better meal. Was down in Cape May at a BB again for the weekend and during the time we talked to other guest about places to eat and everyone there all raved about Freda's. read more

Freda's Cafe - Another wonderful lunch at Freda's - Cafes Near Me - Cape May, New Jersey

Wonderful menu, food and service. I would definitely return. My only suggestion is that the clear shade on the front window be cleaned or replaced. read more

The entire family had lunch here, including my mother. Everyone thoroughly loved their food. Service was excellent.

food was really great (had lunch) the space itself could use some freshening up - but still - I recommend it. read more

After reading stunning reviews of this establishment, my wife and I were still just a little skeptical. We mad reservations for 5:00 pm and arrived a little early. The place is small. We waited to see if anyone(s) would show up. We were seated at the best table and had the place to ourselves..... Within 10-minutes, the place was packed. To our delight and immense enjoyment, the food and service were excellent. This place is above average and offers exceptional dinners. Truly a Cape May gem. read more

Stopped in this weekend with my grandma mother and mother while in cape may for the first time. Love the small house charm. But the ceiling and such were in need of some cleaning. Waited a bit for our food. Had the crab cake sandwhich and another had the Italian focaccia item with artichokes, crab, pesto, mozzerella and provolone I think. Everything was good. read more

Wow..best meal I ever ate, crabcakes the best ever, sea bass on sweet potato w broccoli topping mango sauce. Husband and wife cooking, cozy seating in a front parlor type room. byob, way pricey but so worth it. Must have reservations...oh yea don't forget to pay the meter or add 35 to your trip total like I'm gonna have to.listen if you hear one thing I say go to cape may eat here you won't be sorry read more

Was here in very early spring before the crowds. Saw this place had god ratings checked it out. Not too bad, I think they were better than the lobster house and other places i ate in the area. the waiter was really nice and accommodating atmosphere is a little bit on the tight side since tables are set up pretty close to each other. all in all they cant hold that many people in the small cafe so even when full wasnt too uncomfortable as far as room and noise level. read more

We had such a wonderful dinner here! We started off with the spring rolls and mussels. The spring rolls were so good!! For entrees I ordered the halibut and my husband ordered the salmon. They were both recommended by our server and it was perfect! I wish we had enough room for dessert because they looked amazing! I would definitely come back to Freda's! Be sure to call ahead though, it is very small and popular, so they get full quickly! And it's BYOB!! read more

Freda's Cafe - Halibut- so good! - Cafes Near Me - Cape May, New Jersey

This place was okay- not as great as everyone made it sound. We went off season & after making an 8pm reservation received a call back to come at 7pm. In all my years I have never had that happen, on a Friday night no less! Atmosphere was cute but VERY quiet. No music. You only hear the server yelling orders in to the kitchen. Food was so-so. The crab cakes were doused in a mango topping, seeming to cover up flavor. The beef Wellington was alright. Bathroom access required going outdoors around the corner. I won't be returning. read more

One of my favorites in Cape May. Small and intimate place with amazing food. Try the crab cakes - you'll love them.

Wonderful food, OUTSTANDING service and a delightful time. Right around the corner from the Cape May Peanut Butter Company too! Don't miss this little place. read more

Cute, classic café with extensive, varied menu including daily specials and pictures of Paris on the wall. Love.

Our family's favorite restaurant in Cape May, always a must and it is BYOB the crab cakes are fantastic

Amazing food! Had the crab cakes and they were to die for. Small place and BYOB but it's worth visiting when you're in Cape May.

Excellent food. The stuffed salmon was so good I'd gladly go back. We went with a baby and the staff was accommodating. I'd recommend making a reservation because the space is small and seating up quick. The one downside was the fillet mignon on the menu which was only 6 oz and hardly filling. The waitstaff should maybe give a heads up or something because size is not indicated on the menu. All in all definitely worth going to, especially if you like stuffed salmon. read more

Freda's Cafe is excellent. The atmosphere is intimate and the food is delicious. Between my wife and I we had the spring rolls, halibut, crab cakes, apple crisp, and the praline pound cake. The presentation was excellent and the flavor combinations were unique. Great place for a date. read more

The food was ok. We waited well over an hour for our food. It was Salty but well put together. However after we gave a generous $75 tip, I overheard the waitress complaining that we brought our kids. We go out to eat a lot and my kids are well behaved at restaurants. I will not go back to this restaurant. Btw, don't offer a kids menu if you don't want kids there! We paid $14 for literally spaghetti with butter. The wait staff stinks and the food is mediocre. read more

Wonderful, cozy restaurant with great food. We liked it so much we are going back tomorrow!

My wife Chris and I had great dinner there. Very warm & casual atmosphere, a little tight but not unlike a New York feel. The muscles appetizer was one of the best I think I have had outside of Belgium and the stuffed Salmon was amazing. Our waitress Susan was very friendly and professional. I would highly recommend this restaurant . read more

One of the best meals I've had in my life. Heard a recommendation from a coworkers to try this place out. I am beyond belief happy i listened to that recommendation. I came in for lunch. Be aware lunch and dinner menus are different. I thought I would be disappointed because they only had the lunch menu. I was sure wrong about that. Started off with the mac and cheese. Best mac and cheese I've had in my life. After this I had a wrap with salmon, avocado and goat cheese. Never thought I'd be this blown away by a wrap. AMAZING. Seasoned to perfection. Whatever sauce was drizzled in this wrap complimented everything perfectly. I may have said that it was salmon avocado and goat cheese but it was so, so, so much more. Waiting staff was great. They clearly put so much care into their food. Do yourself a favor and go here. read more

The crab cakes are a must! Mango "salsa" is flavorful & refreshing. Intimate dining and cozy atmosphere. Nice for a date or conversation; wouldn't recommend large group. Cash only, BYOB. read more

Prices rated in Yelp are low. Entrees are more in the $35-$45 range. It almost seems that the food is put together with a lot of ingredients that don't necessarily go with one another and are lumped in just to justify the price. Half the menu doesn't have prices. At a higher price go to the Washington Inn or PSI rather than being crammed in a little store front with too many tables where wait staff barely get down the isles and you have to watch to make sure your toes don't get stepped on. It's an adequate little cafe pretending to be more. You can do better in Cape May at many other places. read more

Freda's is so delicious! I had the best night there. Our waiter was so wonderful. I had the salmon stuffed with crab and OMG it was the best. I had the baked brie to start and it was outstanding. I was so happy to have such a great meal while on vacation. I will absolutely be back whenever I'm in Cape May again! read more

!5 years we've gone here. This past week we went again, along with 7 other local eateries and found it, by far, the best. It deserves the highest rating for the finest food in this very restaurant gifted town. read more

My wife and had the opportunity to dine at Freda's for both lunch and dinner last week (Tuesday for lunch 7/3 and Thursday for dinner 7//5). Lunch was delicious, the service attentive, overall an excellent meal. Dinner on Thursday was an experience to remember, unfortunately I have nothing positive to say about the experience other than the food was again delicious. The service in the front of the house was abysmal, and that's being polite. We were chastised for being 10 minutes early for our 6:30 reservation, and we were told we needed to wait to be seated. The couple behind us were seated at a table for six, but since the entire party did not arrive within 5 minutes, they were told they might have to move to a smaller table. A third couple waited 30 minutes to be seated, and finally asked if they could just sit at a dirty table rather than standing in the doorway. After everyone waiting had finally been seated, a server made the mistake of reprimanding a repeat guest and his wife for making a negative comment about the service. The guest then replied he knew the owner very well and expected a call from Steve the owner, as he was being dressed down by his server simply for expressing his personal views. This captured the attention of everyone in the dining room. At this point, my wife and I asked for the check and left (skipping dessert and coffee). I wanted to give my wife a nice birthday dinner, but did not expect the floor show. Bottom line, the front of the house left much to be desired. From your 6:30 reservation. read more

Was expecting a good meal, but was pleasantly surprised how good it was. The halibut special with crab, tandoori rice and blood orange cranberry sauce was exceptional. Crab cakes were excellent and the praline caramel dessert was the perfect finish. Will definitely be back. read more

Have been here twice now. Once for NYE 2010. Got a 5 course meal for 60.00 per person! Everything was great! I don't recall what I had that night since it was so long ago but they gave us 2 10.00 coupons to return. We made it back last night. Appetizers where stuffed pepper shoters. They were just like they would be anywhere. They did have alot of meat and cheese in them. Also the puff pastry stuffed with crab, portebello mushrooms and roasted red peppers! Top notch! This is a must! The salad was just okay. Soy ginger dressing. was just okay and a little salty. Entrees where grilled tuna steak and filet au poivre. Both really great! Dessert was the butter rum cake with prelines on top. i think a caramel sauce of some sort. We will be back to use our other coupon soon! read more

We went to Freda's for dinner recently. It's overpriced and average quality. The place was small, but that didn't bother me as much as the hectic pace and noise level. Also, their menu was strange, one had a limited number of items with prices, a second menu had additional entree items, but no prices and then the waitress also mentioned a few other special appetizers and entrees. Very strange. I always wanted to try this place and was disappointed, there are plenty of other restaurants in CM that are much better. read more

Staff was very friendly. Inside a little worn out. I ordered the fish tacos figuring they were light rather than a salad. Not sure why so many restaurants overload the fish tacos. This place did the same. They should travel down to Mexico and eat authentic tacos in a cantina. They would find very simple and delicious tacos which is how I expect my tacos. Overloading to justify the price ends up ruining them. Overall food was good quality. read more

My wife and I, our adult children, and their significant others dined at Freda's last night. We read varying reviews beforehand. We were so glad we decided to dine there. I had probably the best Ahi tuna I've ever eaten! It was melt in your mouth tender, perfectly seared, and deliciously seasoned. My wife had crab cakes she called "excellent." I tasted both the filet and strip steak, and each was tender, juicy and flavorful. It was a bit pricey, but in this case, you get what you pay for! And we all know, that's not always the case. Call it a splurge, and dine there- you won't be disappointed. And btw, out server was terrific- friendly, attentive, and enthusiastic. read more

Wonderful food!!!! They do a fabulous job & their desserts are as spectacular as the food. You will love it!
