Private Selection Belgian Chocolate Irish Cream Ice Cream I am an ice cream connoisseur. I normally buy only premium ice cream made with the best ingredients, with a high butter fat content and little to no air added. For that reason, I am a bit of a hard sell when it comes to grocery store ice cream. Intrigued by this particular flavor, I checked out the list of ingredients and bought it, as well as 5 other pints of PS, all of which were on sale for $1.88. It normally sells for $2.99 a pint. It is also available in half quart sizes, which normally sells for $5.99 per currently on sale for $4.49. I have only tried this flavor so far but far exceeded my expectations. I would go so far as to say that it is hands-down, the best grocery store brand ice cream that I have purchased. For example, last summer I tried several flavors of Albertson's Signature Reserve ultra premium ice cream. While the flavors were intriguing, the ice cream itself was disappointing. PS's Belgian Chocolate Irish Cream Ice cream looks exactly like the picture. There are big chunks of cookie mixed into it. The ice cream itself has great flavor and is very smooth and creamy. This is one of the best new chocolate flavors I have tasted in years. One of the things I really like about this ice cream is that you are actually buying a pint. Years ago, Häagen-Dazs raised the bottom of their pints instead of raising their prices, which I would have preferred. It's called truth in advertising. Even at $2.99 a pint, this ice cream is worth every penny. * I purchased this ice cream a couple of months ago. The associate that helped all self check outs was so rude and obnoxious. We had trouble with the register failing and read; the associate has been notified. She was reluctant to help me and my elderly friend with me. She claims I already cleared your register. So clear it again! The register failed 6 times over the course of 20 minute nightmare self check out ever! Associate would rather fold plastic bags. I walk over and asked "miss, can you help us." She replied; I know you need assistance. I waited and she went to help other men at the self check out. What ever her misery has taken her, it seems as though many of the locations could use a refresher course on how to help the customers! OK, I complained. Fred Meyer is one stop shopping at its finest. I love that they have an amazing organics selection. Organic produce, an entire organic/natural grocery section, organic frozen foods as well as dairy case. Seriously, the best selection in any mainstream grocer in town. They also have a decent beauty supply section (which also includes some organics). Their hair care section is awesome and I love that includes all the usual suspects, but also salon brands and again...organics (the organics aren't in with the other brands, but rather can be found in the organic food/product section). They carry Boar's Head meats! Their bakery is beautiful! They not only carry a beautiful array of breads but also gorgeous desserts (dipped strawberries and other gorgeous single serving desserts). It really a step up from most grocery bakeries. And beyond all that grocery fabulousness? Shoes, clothing, housewares, candles, gifts, bedding, floral, garden, and furniture! Why has Fred Meyer gone so far downhill, with Winco service but Albertsons pricing? Is it just the one I shop at, or is it across the board? They no longer seal the packaging that the fruit and pastries are in so that the fruit often ends up rolling across the floor, the pastries are dry and hard, (not to mention the health issues of not stealing the food), when they are stocking the shelves, they are oblivious to the customers who can't get by and can't reach what they need, they stopped teaching their checkers how to properly bag food, they try to force you into there brand, no longer carrying named brands in canned fruits and vegetables (Kroger's canned fruits and veges, suck)... so I ask, seriously, am I the only one who has noticed the huge decline? Can I simply shop at a different Fred Meyer and alleviate these and other problems or is it time to Shop elsewhere? read more

Freddy's dead, but his stores live on. Fred Meyer the man was revered in his Portland hometown the way Joe Albertson was in Boise. Even after he was retired, he would show up unannounced in stores and bag groceries and talk to folks. Sadly, Freddy's was one of the first companies bought up by the leverage buyout kings, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, in 1981. The store hasn't been the same since, and is now owned by Cincinnati-based Kroger. That said, it's a pretty good chain. Generally, the grocery workers are fairly friendly, although some workers completely ignore customers and are in their own worlds. The meat selection at this store seems smaller than most others. The produce section is small, but has a wide variety of regular and organic products. read more

You know how they say, "You don't go into Target because you know what you need. You go into Target and let Target tell you what you need." Well, I'd say you can say the same thing about Fred Meyer. I had no clue what I was missing out on until I moved to Idaho and encountered this marvelous store. Incredible produce selection, essentially every grocery you might need, a full-on men's/women's/junior's/children's clothing department, makeup, an outdoors section, and home furnishings. They literally have it all! Some of their items are a bit more pricey than at other stores, but it just takes a little while of shopping around to figure out what you should purchase from here and what you should leave to other stores. My favorite items to purchase here? Their produce (for the most part). They have a great selection of organic fruits and veggies, and all at affordable prices. This is a weird one, but after years of living in Idaho I have discovered that Fred Meyer has the best deal on my favorite coffee creamer--almond milk coffee mate. Who woulda known? Aside from these items, they also have a great health food section that is comparable to some items you'll find at other health food stores. My favorite part? It might sound strange, but I love looking through their house/kitchenware. Coffee pots, plates, vacuums, all that jazz. They've got an awesome selection and at great prices. I actually have to keep myself from wandering in this area when I come here. If left alone in this part of the store too long, I most likely will leave with something for my kitchen that I "need" but don't actually need. I seriously love this place. They have a really nice selection of Boar's Head lunch meats and if you're from the Northeast you know how important this is - go to any corner store/bodega in ny and your sandwich will be made with Boar's Head. They also have pork rolls, a.k.a Taylor hams!! I personally find them to be pretty disgusting but it's a Jersey staple and was quite shocked to see them here. Delightfully nostalgic to see them again, thanks Fred Meyer. Their produce is a lot fresher than Albertson's and WinCo, definitely a bit pricier than the aforementioned but you get what you pay for. Overall prices aren't that horrible, honestly. And the shopping experience, variety of merchandise and convenience largely make up for any price differentials. Also - their french baguette is really delicious! They're baked fresh every morning and later in the day (4pm?) and makes for a great vessel for your Boar's Head lunch meats. This store is very aggressive in promoting self check, and has very few staffed check outs open. I do not wish to check myself out, I don't care to figure out how too scan, bag and process payments. I go to the store for a quick, easy errand and self checkout does not help with this. Having the option is fine but I didn't care to be aggressively asked to leave a check out line to go check myself out. read more

I had the very best customer service ever in the Fred Meyer Floral Dept. Brittany and 2 other young woman helped me with the process of picking out flowers for my wife and co worker. They made this process both fun and informative. They even helped me to put the flowers in a new pot and are holding them for me for a day so I can deliver them to my beautiful wife on Valentines day. I would highly recommend this Fred Meyers to anyone. Every time I have been in I always get friendly service and smiles from every employee. What does Fred Meyer have to do with a steak house? Fred Meyer on Orchard St and Franklin Rd in Boise is one of the nicest stores around. All Fred Meyer locations in this area have the nicest employees. I love buying from the health foods section at Franklin store. It looks so nice. read more

My first Fred Meyer experience was in Klamath Falls, Oregon. I instantly loved the store, and still do. That is to say, having been in a few locations by now, they are all more-or-less the same. This location, on Franklin in Boise, is fairly close to where I live. So, I am in here quite a bit. I often find myself just roaming around the isles. (I know, I know, "Get a life!") For me, I find it a teensy pricey. So, if I have a "big shop" to do, that is, a big grocery shop to do, I go elsewhere. However, for a quick run close to home, I zip into this location. I was in here today, and they have a new dried cat food, which, after studiously reading the label, I purchased. My cats love it, and they can be real butt heads when it comes to feeding time. So, it is nice to know they have a product that my kitties will eat, which I don't have to get over the Internet. Alas, the stuff was fairly expensive, but nothing is too good for my kitties. So, the way I "manage" Freddy's is that I watch for sale items, which bring otherwise "are you kidding me!" items into my price range. I use their FAX service quite a bit, $0.99 per page ... cheap and reliable. There is a bank in there, which I don't use. There is a Starbucks in there, which I don't use (well, shhhsh, every once-in-a-while, if I am desperate for a fix). The staff is always courteous and friendly, a big plus for me. I like being treated like a customer. So, "Why only Four Stars?" you ask. Well, again, I find many of the items just way too expen$ive for my pocketbook, but that certainly will not stop me from going back again and again. They don't have people who know what they're doing at the Starbucks kiosk. You can't just take some poor clerk off a register and put them in there. The poor kid didn't know how to run any of the equipment, and all I wanted was a large Pike. She made ONE espresso shot and filled the venti cup with hot water. She obviously was only shown how to make one espresso shot, not how to make an Americano or run any of the equipment. Why they had no regular coffee made or were unable to is just ridiculous. read more

I like this store for the most part but some of the associates seem to profile people. I was shopping with my husband and kids when I noticed a man following us. Everywhere we went, he went. He wasn't buying anything though. I asked him what he was doing and he got tongue tied and so I found a manager and let them know he was following my family. Only to be notified that he actually worked their as an undercover security shopper. He followed us for a long time. We didn't do anything that gave him a reason to do that, especially for so long. The customer service could be better. The last two trips or calls I've made to them were equal to "could use improvement". The first, a manager tried to help me find cereal and she was excellent but the stock crew left a big HOLE where there should've been cereal. The second, I called to find out if they had marigolds in stock and the man on the phone said exactly: "We don't have em, that's more of a summer thing." Well FYI Freddys for someone looking for these to honor family members, it's NOT exactly a summer thing. I guess if I want them, perhaps I should make a trip to Mexico to get them. Being from Portland Oregon I sometimes step in to Fred Meyer just out of the need for a taste of home. Walking through the doors is like instantly being transported several hundred miles and is comforting. I personally am not a big fan of the whole 'one stop shopping' experience. There always seems to be too many items crammed into the non-grocery entry area at this store, and I dislike having to dodge racks of clothes, tables of jewelry and bins of flip flops in order to get to the grocery department. One thing I really DO like about this particular locations is the Starbucks in the store. It's nice to grab a cup of coffee to fortify me while I shop. read more
