I have a confession to make. I'm a candy freak. So I'm embarrassingly at home in the colourful explosion of teeth-rotting goodness that is the Freak Lunchbox. Every now and then, I'll stop in on the way home from work and load myself up a big bag of goodness. (Predominantly sours, heavy on that mythical flavour known as blue raspberry.) I don't even pretend it's for anyone but me. The staff are fantastic. I rarely leave without having had a giggle at either something someone said, or something I overheard them saying to each other. When I had a Mad Men-themed birthday party, a staffer helped me comb the store for retro candies and chocolate bars. Back in the day, I was the employee of a candy store myself. Which, likely started me on the road to my blue raspberry problem. Note to the staff: Be grateful you do your candy by weight. Back in my day (shakes cane) we had to count out penny candies for eight year olds. I swear they got sick pleasure out of making me count out 500 Swedish fish. read more

"Me want candy," I say to myself whenever I pass by this store. If candy is on your mind too, Freak Lunchbox has got you covered. The real deal is the bulk section in the back where you'll find such beauties as root beer gummies, chocolate covered jujubes, Swedish fish, and the enticingly named unicorn poop. Shovel as much or as little of each as you want out of the bins and into your bag and you're set to go. Just try not to eat it all before you get home. Side bonus here is that you get that wonderful candy-on-candy effect that happens when you bag different treats in the same receptacle. Sour dust wipes off on chocolate raisins; gummy worms gain that exotic crunchy coating as they pick up random bits dropped by other pieces... The front of the store is filled with pre-packaged candy and novelties. I was pulled in by the display of Wii controller-shaped mint tins, but disappointed to learn there weren't any old school consoles represented. This is a beautiful, bright cheery spot on Barrington street. It always makes me smile walking by. The staff are friendly, but the real draw is the candy. They have all your classic retro favorites, British imports and more. The prices can be a little high especially for the imports, but as a once in a while treat they are awesome. Love the Wonka Bars. My favourite though are the bins of candy, it's by weight so you can mix and match as many candies as you like (though be careful the price can climb quickly). My 5th star is awarded to them because they have a bin of candy bananas, like the kind you find in a box of runts! These are my favourite, and I love that I don't have to get stuck with the lame lime and orange flavors to get my banana fix. Haven't tried their milkshakes yet, but I hear they are delicious! read more

Freak Lunchbox is like Disneyland for your stomach. Cross the threshold and enter the amusement park of candy. Freak Lunchbox crams into it's tiny shop an overwhelming array of candy. Here, you'll find both new adventures and old favourites, including Pez dispensers of every imaginable character. I love to visit Freak Lunchbox when it's time to fill Christmas stockings. One year, I dropped $50 here just on candy! Since then, I've become much more reasonable in my selections, but I won't say that the urge to go hog wild isn't always at the back of my mind. If you've never been to Freak Lunchbox (where have you been living, exactly?) you are in for an amazing experience. I wish they would open a sister store somewhere besides downtown, as parking can be brutal. read more

With a carnival atmosphere, " the Freak" is both a dentist's dream and easily one of the most fun candy stores you will ever visit. The experience is as fun as the candy is delicious. The bulk bins feature hundreds of candies, ju jubes, smarties, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered gummie bears, mojos, and double salted liquorices just to name a few. Bulk candy is sold by weight so grab a plastic bag and fill'er up with the best selection in Halifax. If you don't see what you're looking for, ask the friendly staff and they'll look out back. The Freak also has a large selection of what I would call vintage candy--Freshen up gum, Michael Jackson trivia cards, Thrills, Pez dispensers--all the good stuff from my childhood. The wide array of campy pop culture items such as glow in the dark nuns, wax mustaches and novelty clocks make perfect gifts for occasions ranging from office parties to Secret Santa to bachlorette parties. Lots of fun without breaking the bank. If you're feeling thirsty, grab yourself a Pop Shop pop, or better yet, order one of their delicious milkshakes. With a list of about 15 flavours you can combine up to three flavours. My favourite is chocolate nutella. Freak Lunchbox has the best milkshakes I have ever tried they also cater to the most interesting of tastes, letting you choose a mixture of any flavour they have. There is no limit to what can be done. On another note: I was very impressed at the lunchbox collection they have... I mean, Joe Ledbetter designs? Hello! Anyway, Freak Lunchbox is a candy store, there's plenty of jelly beans, penny candy, and old timey candy bars to look at. This store brings me back to the days of my child hood! I love this store, it's great! The store itself is quite small but full of vibrant colour. The entire store is one big candy! The ceiling is decorated with candy boxes and there is a life size Uumpa Lumpa outside the store. You can go around and pick which candy you would like to buy by putting it into a takeout box. It is a bit costly and it is easy to spend a few dollars there. They have candy that you would never be able to buy in a 'normal' store which is what makes this store so unique. The Freak Lunchbox is one of the few spots that I'm"m aware of that you can go and buy Jelly Belly jelly beans by individual flavour (e.g. A&W Root Beer, Bubblegum, Strawberry Daiquiri, etc.). The candy store is famous for selling all of the hard to find candies that you can't find anywhere else in NS or even Canada. Personal favorites there are the Popeye Candy Cigarettes, and the American Heath chocolate bar. The setup inside is awesome and the staff are very knowledgeable. While the prices are steep - the unique experience and great selection more than make up for it. read more

I actually believe I can feel my blood pressure relax just a little as soon as I enter this place, just at the mere thought of getting that candy in my system. Considering I visit this candy coated confectionary almost on a weekly basis, it's amazing I have yet to submit my review. Getting my Freak on a little too often is a definite reason for my much needed submission to be on the Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp. I can imagine Tommy Europe finding me in a corner with a chocolate face and making some pathetic attempt to hide the evidence. But I can't blame the Lunchbox for my confectionary indescretions. They have provided this city with a much needed service as far as I'm concerned. From their selection of candy you can bag yourself, to the old fashioned throw backs that will have you remembering candy store visits of your youth, the Freak Lunchbox is the best place to get candy in the city. Staff is super friendly and helpful. They even went out back for me to bring out my much loved California Raisins when I was having a craving. These folks are awesome and get much love from this candy-holic. P.S. I prefer the Barrington location, only because I visited the Bedford one recently and ended up with quite a few stale Jelly Belly's, so I think I'll keep my visits to the Halifax store.... read more

Very unique store from Dairy's Dream bars to chocolate covered ants This place also has loose candy and baggies so you can get your fill of mints, gummy candies, awesome milkshakes and other all sorts. All in all has classic toys and ritzy candies The problem that I have however is I come in and find out that they don't have any new supplies or newer "unusual" candy, a good example was the Harry Potter's Dragon Egg chocolate creams, Extra large gummy bears, and Gigantic Toblerones. Now a days it's candy I've seen before from various other stores like Pete's and might I add can be a better price, thats another downside I find that at times the candy selection is not only not wide branched and more diverse but it's prices can really do a number on the paycheck, Here's hoping the old Freak Lunchbox spirit can come back and find brand new candy selections that not only can be worth the money but is unique and not sold a mile or more away read more

Even if what you purchased turns out to be broken in the box, they will refuse you a refund. Yes, you read that right. Even though they are entirely at fault for selling you a broken product, they will not return it so you're shit out of luck. I'll never shop here again based on these poor business practices. They keep messaging me to insist they do refunds, but their staff denies it up and down in store. Apparently, they don't even have a function on their register to give refunds. The cashier felt terrible about it. Clearly there is a huge disconnect between HR and your retail staff. Get it together. read more

I dare you to walk past this store with its lil piggy and Martian gatekeepers and not be compelled to stop in to... "just look around." Young and old will lose their cognitive abilities and find themselves inside, oogling and oohing, zoning out and subsequently waking up to find they're drooling and cradling packages of Necco wafers. There's selections of contemporary candies and some blasts from the past like Fruit Stripe gum. Harder to find confections litter the shelves like bars of nougat and strawberry flavoured Cow Tails and an entire fridge of curious energy beverages and soda. In the back is the ultimate by-the-KG free for all, just grab a plastic baggie and have at it. If you've a fan of anything gummi, then this will make your day. Personal favorites include cubes of turkish delight, spearmint gummi's, and candy covered gummi bears. Various random tsotskes are at every turn to amuse you and the friendly staff is there to help to lift your haul onto the scale to figure out the damage you owe. read more

Although the prices are a bit steep compared to the Bulk Barn, it is the experience that makes it worth it. The look on my boyfriends 5 year old daughter as we entered this place was priceless. We let her pick out a few things, and she opted for the slush puppy liquid candy, and a few select candies from the back section. I also opted for a few candies and was quite happy with my choices. The music was loud and entertaining, and the staff were happily dancing a long. It is a small space so be prepared to squeeze by other customers. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Its so bizarre and fun. The staff are insanely nice and funny. They are always smiling and happy to see you, its grate. Its a good place to bring your kids and even adults will have fun looking at all the wacky things they have for sale. Its kinda reminds me of WIlly Wonkas chocolate factory. What can be said of this place as it is indescribable. Maybe it could be called a little piece of Willy Wonka's factory made real. Somehow they have just brought the candyshop of your childhood dreams into our reality. As a kid I went into many candy stores with high hopes and generally found my candy stores that might have been designed by an elderly aunt. Not this one. What is amazing is that the same people have a store in Bedford that is totally lacking in energy and pizazz.
