We stopped by this beautiful chocolate shop near the pier where our ship was docked today and were delighted with our visit. To cool off after exploring Halifax, we each ordered a mango and passion fruit soft-serve ice cream in a cup. I also purchased a milk chocolate slate with almonds, a box of milk chocolate-covered hazelnuts, and a few wild rose milk chocolate truffles to enjoy later. The soft-serve ice cream was outstanding. We both agreed that it was one of the tastiest soft serves we've had in quite some time. The vanilla bean soft serve was exceptionally smooth, creamy, and flavorful, while the mango and passion fruit added a refreshing tropical twist that was perfect for a warm day. One of the highlights of our visit was chatting with Tara, the front store manager. She was friendly, warm, and incredibly knowledgeable. She took the time to explain the chocolate-making process used by the owner and master chocolatier, Julien Rousseau. Learning about the craftsmanship and care that goes into creating the chocolates made the experience even more enjoyable and interesting. Tara's assistant, Aldrin, was equally warm and welcoming, making us feel appreciated from the moment we walked through the door. The shop itself is spotless, beautifully presented, and offers a relaxing atmosphere. After spending several hours walking around Halifax, it was the perfect place to sit down, enjoy a sweet treat and a latte, and take a break. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would not hesitate to stop by again the next time we are in Halifax. This is a follow up review after trying another box of 24 chocolates that were shipped to me. This was a much better experience. I have found a description of some of the chocolate flavours online. There are still several chocolates in the box which are not shown online, especially the decorative holiday designs. I had to bite the bullet (i.e. chocolate [pun intended]) and hope for the best. Unlike the last time, the box was filled with chocolate flavours that I really liked. Some are very original like blueberry tea and the blue speckled dome-shaped dark salted butter caramel. Most of the chocolates shifted out of place, turned upside down or sideways in transit (see photo). I've been in touch with an executive at the company who knows about the issue and is planning to change the packaging. Hopefully, they will also enclose in each box a QR code or website address/URL detailing all their chocolate flavours. I appreciate that someone reached out to me when they read that my experience wasn't as positive as they or I would have liked. This is a company that cares about its customers and reputation. OH wow! The chocolates here were absolutely delightful, unique and delicious. Their dark chocolate is unmatched. The macarons were extremely special - we had the black currant and the lemon and they were both unbelievably delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to stop in here any time you're in Halifax. Wonderful place. Found it accidentally walking back to the port. If you're on a ship this is just a couple of blocks away. I bought a lot! The meringues were good but the macarons were amazing!!!! I wish I had some left. My favorite was the passion fruit. So tart and fabulous. 10 macarons were 24 dollars. So worth it. My big box of chocolate was 47 I think. Very good chocolate. Quality flavors. The pate de fruit were my favorite. My husband liked the espresso best. He also loved the chocolate bark he bought. I also recommend the salted caramel sauce. So good. And my husband impulsively had a coffee which was the best coffee of our trip. Yes, we spent a lot but it was totally worth it. Go here. Eat. Drink. Be happy. They have baked goods too! Sooo Happy we discovered Rousseau Chocolatier! Me and my family are very particular when it comes to Chocolate and usually prefer European but Rousseau Chocolate is amazing and stands up and beyond our expectations. The best Canadian Chocolate I have ever eaten and every bit as good if not better than European but served with True Maritime spirit. The staff are the "Best" !! They made us feel welcome and went out of their way to serve us exactly what we wanted. They were even willing to customize my hot drink. Very nice staff I met for the first time going into this place today. I didn't realize the time and what time they closed and was going to grab something for my son and me while waiting for a friend. I went to open the door and it was locked then I saw the times lol The owner/ employee/ person who answered was awesome and unlocked the door asking if they could help me, I apologized and said no worries and went to leave but they were very cool in letting us in and stating no problem they could serve us- I'm glad they did as their hot chocolate was delicious and my son loved his candy! I was extremely impressed by Rousseau Chocolatier. The cafe is spacious and bright. They have lots of confectioneries for sale, some vegan, some not but I noticed a lot of their dark chocolate seems to be safe. Both the gentleman and woman working were very friendly, helpful and informative. They offer both soy and almond milk for coffee drinks and we asked about vegan chocolates and were told the peppermint and marzipan are vegan (I had a friend who went after and she was told more were vegan so inquire when visiting). They also offer dairy-free vegan soft serve sorbet. The chocolates were absolutely decadent and delicious. I really loved the peppermint! We also tried the raspberry sorbet which was good, sweet and smooth. For a chocolate shop I am super impressed with the vegan options and plan to go back to satisfy my sweet tooth. read more

I love Rousseau. The space is very aesthetically pleasing with lovely mouldings and lots of natural light and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. The confections never disappoint, my favourites have to be the pistachio macarons. They also sell lovely, locally-made croissants and pain au chocolat. To top it off, they make an absolutely glorious dry cappuccino with just enough foam, and their hot chocolate (with their own coco of course) is to die for. read more

This place is AH-MAZING. I moved to Halifax about a year ago, just down the street from Rousseau and I can't believe it took me almost a year to stop in. The store is pristine! It's so clean and inviting. In particular, it is really cool to see the chocolatier in his space working away at his craft. The owners/staff here are so nice and engaging and super helpful and knowledgeable. One of the owners told me their chocolatier is originally from the south of France + having travelled much of the south of France, it's my opinion that he's at the top of his trade anywhere. I've only been a few times but I have never been disappointed with the goods offered here. Everything is truly exceptional. Most notably, their Rochers Suisse chocolates and chocolate mousse (served on occasion - be sure to follow their Instagram account for updates). Unfortunately, it is a bit on the pricier side; however, it's worth every penny. I don't mind spending my money on quality + I like to support local businesses. As well, they support many other local businesses by purchasing ingredients locally. I highly, highly recommend treating yourself. Particularly for those coming to Halifax by way of cruise ship. It's super close to the port. Was on a business trip from Toronto and was staying at the Westin. Asked the receptionist if there was a Starbucks where I could grab a coffee. She said that I could use the hotel restaurant or opt for this place which she said is pretty awesome. I am glad that I went with her recommendation. I just stopped in with my wife the other day, we opted to split an ($6) ice cream (haven't tried any of the macarons/chocolates) - also it was just soft serve which were weren't expecting. After we ate it we didn't care - super delicious. We had the vanilla bean and dark chocolate swirl which came with a praline topping. Topping was good but the ice cream would stand on it's own. It was just slightly sweet and had an amazing texture. I'm used to cheap fake tasting soft serve, and this tastes 100x better that any soft serve I've ever had. Ill be back read more

I'm not about buying souvenirs but when I saw the adorable lobster shaped chocolate lollipops at Rousseau's, I knew I had to have them! How could this place get any better....ICE CREAM that's how. This has always been the go to place for premium European style chocolate treats but now they have the most amazing soft serve ice cream made with...you guessed it...CHOCOLATE! And not just any chocolate, this is so unlike any other soft serve I've ever had. Oh, and you can also get it with your choice of white, milk or dark chocolate dip! They also offer a sorbet soft serve of varying fruit flavor but I haven't tried it yet. Everything else here is a delicious work of art. I don't know whether to eat it or hang it on the wall. Disappointed in the lack of selection and purchasing options. Went in for Xmas gifts and it was like scraping the bottom of the barrel. Their actual chocolates are lovely and very well done, but you'd expect that they could have ramped up substantially in preparation for the holidays. Also quite surprised at at payment options, specifically in regards to gratuities. Is placing chocolates in a box for a couple of minutes worth 15-25 % in addition to the $2 per piece price? Loved this place. They had delicious chocolates, from fancy single pieces in glass cases to lobster-shaped lollipops. There was also chocolate-covered meringue, chocolate bark, brownies, and chocolate bars - in dark or milk chocolate (and a few white chocolate choices). They also offered coffee drinks (e.g. espresso) and 1 small table with chairs right outside, in the beautiful sun. The man who got our chocolates for us had a cute French accent and was very professional. For the single chocolates, flavor choices were extensive, including: lavender, caramel, hazelnut praline (our favorite), passionfruit lime, espresso, hoskapa (the local wild berry), rose, etc. Worth a visit! read more

So I pass this storefront on my way to work each morning. When I saw a chocolatier was opening here, I practically started salivating. Finally stopped in on my lunch, and sooo glad I did. The space is small, neat and pristine. Pretty, pretty chocolates beckoned me in the display case. A very friendly and engaging staff (I assume co-owner?) gave me a sample of a hazelnut praline. Lovely. She explained what they offer (chocolates, drinks, brownies) and I chose a plethora of chocolates for myself, my mother and a bar to share with my co-workers. Share the love! Prices are what one would expect for superior, handmade chocolates. Which are delicious, by the way. They melt in your mouth and you can taste the first-rate ingredients. Nommy. I absolutely love this chocolate shop! I have been a few times now since they have opened and I will keep coming back. The owner is very friendly and always has something new to offer to her customers, and it is great to watch Julien making the chocolates through the window to their kitchen! What a find! I told Natalie if we were local, I'd be in all the time. Even a quarter of the harvest chocolate square exuded all the spices of fall and pumpkin pie. The hot chocolate was like drinking a thick but wonderfully potable liquid chocolate. My husband and I enjoyed it quite thoroughly along with the inexpensive 3 - chocolate taster served on a small, bamboo plate. Natalie and Julien were as special to meet as their chocolates were to eat. If you are in Halifax and don't stop by, you will have missed a very special experience (the rose petal chocolate squares are made with hand - picked rose petals grown locally/regionally). What in this world is better than butter and chocolate! Love the hot chocolate and the plain croissants! The cafe is lovely really bright and airy and the service is wonderful as well! Great spot for meeting friends or just grabbing something to go! A word to the wise lest you spill any of the precious hot chocolate the to go cup lids are awful and you'll end with half your drink down your coat or in the cup holder of your car. A small piece of torn up napkin shoved in the spout prevents this. read more

Anyone who has traveled outside of Halifax to a major city and taken the time to find a real Chocolatier will love this place because we now have one of our very own to enjoy. I was reminded as soon as I walked into the front door of my favorite one in Montreal only the selection at Rousseu was even more refined and sophisticated with the selection at hand. Real rose pedal chocolate and many others. I suggest trying them all in one large bag but take little bites and eat very slowly. As for price it is priced accordingly and you can always take home a few bars as they are only 6 bucks a piece but if you are going to play in the big pool be prepared to pay. I had met a date at 10am, for coffee at The Trident. With our coffees in-hand I spied Rousseau Chocolatier across the street and jokingly asked my date is she wanted chocolate for breakfast. When she replied in the affirmative, I was thrilled. It was the brownies that first caught our attention. In my experience, brownies tend to fall into one of two categories: cakey brownies, or fudgey brownies -- and rarely do the twain meet. At first bite I realized that these brownies struck the perfect balance between the cakey/fudgey schools of brownie making, and I anticipated many return trips. Our visit likely would have happily ended there, but co-owner Nathalie began to tell us the story of Rousseau Chocolatier, and how they hoped to differentiate themselves in the local market. I can't make this point loudly enough: this city has many fine artisans and crafts people that make beautiful products, but often times their shortcoming is their inability to communicate what makes their products unique and exciting. This is not Nathalie's problem -- she did a fantastic job talking-up her business, and some of the success stories they've had to date. More than that she was engaging--and not just because she was sampling us in maple cream chocolates at the same time...but perhaps partially. I did not go in with the intention of buying handmade chocolates. But there I was with an engaging host, trying hard to mitigate my involuntary facial contortions while the ecstasy of premium chocolate flooded my mouth. Suffice to say we bought some chocolate. We tried three chocolates that day: - Salted Caramel (rich salted caramel filling, in dark chocolate) - Feuilletine (hazelnut and wafer--think nutella filling combined with angel tears, and made with pure unicorn milk) - and of course the aforementioned Maple Cream (which was so good, I felt obliged to sing the national anthem shortly after eating it--rarely has food made me feel this patriotic) Without exception, all of these rank as some of the best chocolates I've ever enjoyed. It was also an important reminder that when you spend the money on good quality chocolate, there is so much satisfaction found in those luxurious little chocolate packages, you just don't feel the need to consume a ton of it to satisfy your cravings (that said, it wouldn't be a challenge for me to eat 2 dozen chocolates, by myself, in a single sitting). If I were insulin dependent, Rousseau Chocolatier is the kind of place I'd risk of a diabetic coma for. read more

Dropped in to get a little sample of their French macaroons and chocolates. We had these yummy cookies at the world renown Laduree in Paris so I hoped for a decent comparable. The owner assured me they were. Well tonight, we sat out on our deck to cappuccinos and cookies. They were amazing! Very fresh, crunchy with gooey fillings. It's a chocolate shop, so how can you go wrong!? Well, there are ways I am sure... but you won't find them here. The quality of store bought chocolates has in my opinion dropped dramatically since I was young. I just can't buy or give the big brands any more. But these.... wow! These are a wonderful, rich breath of fresh (chocolatey) air. From the smells to the flavors to even the nice packaging, if you need a really nice gift or a treat, stop by. We saw this wee shop on a drive and promised ourselves to return as soon as possible. We ended up returning and what a great choice. We went all out and got six macarons, a brownie, multiple chocolates, and a hot chocolate. I cannot say enough about how tasty EVERYTHING was. I met the owners, Natalie and Julien, shortly after they moved to Halifax. They are such nice people, and I am now totally sold on their chocolate. I don't have the biggest sweet tooth, but I am in love with the fudgy coconut brownie - which I take home, warm up and top with vanilla ice cream. I was also completely blown away by their home-made hot chocolate which is made from melted Belgian chocolate. Amazing stuff.
