Smelled wonderful in here. Everything is super fresh. Staff were very patient as we took our time looking and ordering. Loved that the names and prices were clear and easy to read. Gingerbread men were a little dry for my liking. Almond bar was 10/10 Almond ring was 10/10. I have fond memories of the Gingerbread Haus. Mum and I would go there after a visit to my doctor across the street. It's been several years, so maybe my tastes have changed. Nothing in the pastry case really spoke to me (the cakes looked good, but cookies and eclairs were down right unappealing), so I ordered a bloated-looking croissant and an overpriced latte. I didn't even eat half of the cold, doughy croissant. The latte was adequate, but I think it was bout $3.65 for a small mug. And what's with charging an extra dollar for a chai latte? This is why the kids went into the Gingerbread House! I have to admit, I have an addiction. And it definitely is the Gingerbread Haus on Queen street. I have not found so many good pastries, cakes and breads in one store ever! And I have traveled around the world! Gingerbread Haus is a quaint, relaxing and beautifully designed store! They have put a lot of care into their food and it shows. I love going in and watching people turn into the most indecisive humans they have ever been. I sympathize, because I know what they are going through. Lets start with their breads shall we? They are 100% natural. No preservatives. And you can taste the quality. I find with foods that have preservatives, I can eat more and it takes a while to feel full. But with natural foods, a little goes a long way. And their food is no exception. Perhaps unless we are talking about their pastries. Then in that situation, I could eat more than I would like to. But I have no will power when I walk into this store. My favorite desert is the Eclairs, but they have so many other great items to choose from. I know I have had a cake from their store before but cannot remember what it is called. However I know I rated it a 10/10. This store also has a modest lunch menu. It isn't very large but I do love their soup and sandwiches. And I am not normally a soup fan myself. I'd suggest getting half of a sandwich and a soup. Believe me, you'll be both satisfied and full. The Gingerbread Haus still seems to be a secretive place in Halifax. The Florentines are super sweet and super sticky (your dentists will be happy), the chocolate croissants are more cake like than French Pain Chocolat, but delicious none fhe less. I spent about 20 dollars on the box which might seem pricey to anyone that has never attempted to make their own marzipan or pay for the ingredients involved.Everything I ate was absolutely delicious (except the brownie which was OK). I don't know what it's called but they have a little almond half moon dipped in chocolate that was amazing. These people use high quality ingredients and bake like it means something to them. This place is perfect if you have a sweet craving! It's on the expensive side, but it's absolutely delicious. They also have lunch specials with sandwiches and soups. This place is a must-try. I went in for the first time and just bought a whole bag of goodies (I was tempted to say "one of everything!" but I limited myself to 6 items, around $15). This is the way to go. I loved it all, especially the almond ring, cream horn, and pretzel. Their "Elephant Ears" are just like the pastries I've had in Portugal. Their buttercream cakes looked amazing, as did the variety of sourdough breads and baguettes, so I'll have to try those next time. I took my items to-go, but they do have a small seating area. The only thing that could use improvement is the cafe area, which seems a bit cramped and could use more space. Time to expand? I will definitely be back! read more

Aside from just being fun to pronounce (picture the german guys from that volkswagen commercial), 'Gingerbread Haus' also has an amazing assortment of cakes, cookies, pastries and breads. This place also has the added comfort of seeming as though it's that bakery your Grandma has always gone to. Very well worn and basic, but in a content and cozy way. Gingerbread Haus isn't trying to be anything that it's not that's for sure! When did every bakery/coffee house decide they needed to be painted like starbucks anyway? I think people are going to start making a return (if they ever left) to these independent hole in the wall places over and above the cheaper box store coffee/tea shops and bakeries. I personally recommend the Almond Rings and the Long Johns/Eclairs. They come in the pudding as well as whipped cream varieties! The baguettes at Gingerbread Haus are amazing as well! I recommend ordering a cake from Gingerbread Haus for your next occasion also. Be sure to stop in at Christmas time for a gingerbread man too! read more

Every year someone buys me a birthday cake from here. It is always a torte, though what kind of torte varies. Honestly, it is a tradition I want to continue. This bakery makes excellent bread, the white broetchen rolls are particularly good. Sadly, the croissants are not. They are not the genuine, light, flaky pastries that one would hope for, but are rather heavy and doughy. My experience with their sweet baking is limited, and mixed. The almond rings are excellent, but the celebration cakes, while very attractive, are disappointing. I have twice bought a Gingerbread Haus birthday cake for my wife. Last year I bought a chocolate one and this year a lemon buttercream. In both cases, the cake layers were quite dry and tasteless, and the buttercream filling slimy and also lacking in flavour. The first cake was bought at Pete's, so we thought that perhaps it was stale, and had high hopes for the second one because it came directly from the bakery. I think I'm adding a new thing to my Halifax Bucket List: Try one of everything at the Gingerbread Haus. Dangerously enough, this bakery is close to where I just moved to. I always want to buy a cake from here to take to take a birthday party but just can't afford them, so I window shop them instead. Much more affordable are their treats, from sweet to cheesy, chocolatey to fruity, there is more than one thing in here for everyone. Their breads are fabulous as well and you can even grab a day old baked good if you're lucky. The service is prompt and friendly and the atmosphere is good for a day of exploring what Halifax has to offer. There are usually couples drinking coffee at the cafe (they sell their own roast here). I ordered Black forest cake for my boyfriend. It tasted amazing. It is the best cake in the store in my opinion. It's made with whipped cream flavoured with Kirschwasser (a German cherry liquor), so special. In addition, the service was improved, definitely will visit more! read more

The sign outside this place was calling to me when I moved to Halifax at the end of the summer, amidst a brutal heat wave: "Fresh squeezed lemonade! Iced tea!" For some reason, I never gave into my cold drink longings at Gingerbread Haus, but ever since I finally did venture into this subterranean bakery it's been a frequent stop. Caramel-lovers should check out the Florentines, which come with less traditional candied cherries mixed in. They're indulgent and super sweet, consider yourself warned. I am less impressed with their croissant, but that's because I like a flakier, butterier version - theirs are more on the fluffy, bready end of the pastry spectrum. The cakes are not an everyday treat, but should be noted for their powers of persuasion. Once, as I ordered 5 or 6 treats destined for a brunch spread, the friendly clerk asked if they were for here or to go. I said 'to go', and joked back that it would be pretty impressive if I was planning on eating all of these right now. Her reply was that she has seen - multiple times! - a customer come in and eat an entire cake in one sitting. Yikes! But it says something about their cakes, no? One word - Bienenstich!! Run, don't walk! Having travelled in Europe sampling some of the best pastry around, who would have thought I would find it in a little underground bakery in Halifax! Their Bienenstich is filled with Bavarian cream and topped with honey crusted almonds and is the perfect sweetness. We've bought three birthday cakes from this place. The first was a chocolate almond torte and it was good. Sadly, the second and third were big disappointments. We thought perhaps the second was just a bad day...but this last time was equally tasteless. Given the cost, we won't be getting a cake again. Their almond rings are great! Took a walk with my 3 kids to the Gingerbread Haus the other day. One thing I noticed was the lack of price tags. How much is a loaf bread on the shelf? What about the beautiful cakes that attracted everyone's attention upon entering? Or even the price for a cup of tea or coffee? What about the lunch special sandwich and the soup of the day? Nobody knows because there weren't any price tags. We ordered a slice of the white chocolate cheese cake with cherry pie filling on top, a cream cone, and gingerbread man cookies. The kids really liked their cookies. I had a bite or two and really liked the fact it's not overtly gingery or sweet. The cream cone was esthetically pleasing. The cone pastry was buttery and flakey, although they could've put more cream inside the cone. The texture of the white chocolate cheese cake was between airy and dense, just the way I like it. The cherry pie filling on top was a big disappointment: the cherries were neither sweet nor sour, they were watery! Sigh. read more

Usually I just pop in for a German coffee but their pastries are wonderful too. Everything is made in house (except the soup I'm told) and it smells like heaven in there. I bought a small cake recently which I thought was a little pricey - but it was so amazing that I'll definitely go back. It was very rich and frankly I served too much of it. Small slices would have done the trick... The staff is friendly and helpful, and although I've never had the bread, I'm told by a co-worker it's wonderful too. This is a very good, high quality bakery tucked away on Queen Street. I go here whenever I want some baked goods outside of the Sobeys/Superstore kind of fare. With a wide variety of breads, pastries, cookies, and cakes I'm never disappointed. The store is charming and the staff are very pleasant as well. While I can't say a bad thing about anything that's made there, my favorite are the shortbread cookies: they are in a "melt in your mouth" category all on their own. For some reason, I've never stopped in for lunch, although they do seem to have good specials. While definitely more expensive than a typical grocery store bakery, but you certainly get your money's worth. read more

Nestled in between Sobey's and Subways, this is a hidden gem. I ordered the Red Coat and French Horn pastry. The French Horn was made with real cream instead of that hydrogenated oil that usually comes from a French Horn you pick up at the grocery store. That makes a HUGE difference, creamy and rich, it'll make you sick if you eat too much. I wanted to each too much though because it was so good! The red coat was all right, pastry and buttercream combination rolled in coconut with cherries hidden in the middle. After having the horn, it definitely could not compare. My daughter ordered the gingerbread cookie and all she could say with a smile was that it was delicious. read more

I'm giving this bakery only one star because I'm hopeful that I will actually have an opportunity to try it in the future. Unfortunately the only experience I've had to far wasn't great. Last week I emailed the bakery about the price of a cake that I planned on ordering for my boyfriends birthday. The email included all the details they would need to know because I wanted to get as much info as possible. They emailed me back the next day quoting the price and said that I would be able to get it all I had to do was call and order three days before. However, when I did that they said they weren't able to make it and I was out of luck... Now I have to find another birthday cake and my boyfriend will be very disappointed. Yummy! The bread is better than Julien's (for the fact that its not a toss up if its fresh or not). The cakes are surprisingly good and fresh. Also, possibly the best apple strudel ever, according to my boyfriend. The staff is so friendly and well trained. However, the chocolate croissants are too heavy. Like the Two If By Sea kind.
