I had no idea Susie's offered anything vegan-friendly until my friend told me. Located in Bayer's Lake next to Harvey's is their adorable storefront. Everything looks so nice and delicious, I wish it was all vegan. They do offer made to order vegan cupcakes which are perfect for weddings, baby showers or any other occassion you may want sweets for. In store they also have tubs of vegan cookie dough which you can eat as is or bake once you get home. My friend purchased a cup of chocolate chip cookie dough for me which I ate with a spoon and it was delicious and even more surprising was that it was also gluten-free! Hope that Susie's will eventually expand to offer more vegan options for the ever growing vegan population in Halifax but so glad they offer anything at all! Had a large order, 32 cupcakes, 5 different flavours) as we were celebrating 6 birthdays. Pick up was quick and easy, made even better by the friendliness and helpfulness of the cashier and the baker. As well, they were kind enough to help me procure a display stand for the cupcakes. Really appreciated this!! The presentation was beautiful and the variety of tastes was amazing... Fresh, moist, and flavourful. Giving Susie's Shortbreads even 1 star seems unfair to all the wonderful bakers out there that only got 4 stars. This is an example of an MBA run bakery (she has this on her business card). Tastes like the cheapest ingredients were used to maximize profits - which may be good for the bottom line but does nothing to satisfy my cupcake needs. And price wise - a cupcake in Halifax shouldn't cost more than in downtown Toronto from a Cordon Bleu trained pastry chef who doesn't skimp on the butter. If there's any butter in Susie's buttercream frosting then I'll eat my hat.... which would probably taste better. Sorry, but there's a world of much better tasting cupcakes out there. read more

When Susie was the Cookie Queen of the brewery market, I adored her ridiculously priced, teenie-weenie shortbreads. I give her mad props for growing her business, but thumbs down for this place. I've gotten cupcakes here a few times because the selection *is* good (Oreo! Maple bacon! Cheesecake balls! Cupcakes!) and because I had memories of nibbling away at the market in years gone by. The last time was, well, the last time. We got six different ones and the only one fit to eat was the Oreo cupcake. Disappointing to say the least, especially I've made a few cupcakes myself that were cheaper and better-tasting than these ones. Dry, crumbly and flavourless. I'm pretty sure they were either old, freezer-worn or both. A few people have slagged the buttercream icing, but to be honest I'm not sure that that's really what it is, especially since it was as dry as the cupcakes it was sitting on. I hate to hate on a local entrepreneur, but she may have sacrificed quality for quantity with this new place in Bayer's Lake. On the other hand, if Susie can get away with charging a fortune for sand patties in crinkly wrappers, it makes the idea of opening a food business in Halifax quite appealing. I LOVE CAKE! However I went to the Bayers Lake location a while back and I am really disappointed in Suzies' cupcakes. They look beautiful however the texture of the cake was crumbly and old, not moist, and the frosting is so sickly sweet that I couldn't eat it. "Real buttercream" isn't always a plus! Also had to mention that I purchased a 6-pack as a thank you gift for a friend - when I got home, two of the top-heavy ones had tipped over and ruined all the other cupcakes. My husband and I were pretty underwhelmed from the two we bought earlier, so we dissected all of them and found that it wasn't just our earlier choices that weren't so great - it was all of them. Susie's Shortbreads is an adorable family-owned business with a location in Bayers Lake and Dresden Row (soon to be moved to Purdy's Wharf). If you have a sweet tooth, this is definitely the place to be. They have such a delicious range of sweets to choose from, but the cupcakes are probably my go-to. They're light and fluffy, but not dry. They're beautifully decorated and they always come with a very generous amount of icing. Among the baked goods, there is also a selection of baking supplies and dessert-themed nick-nacks (pencils, zippered pouches, lip balm, tote bags, etc.). I really like this place, and would definitely recommend it to anybody who enjoys sweets. read more

I looooove Susie's cupcakes. (That could be taken the wrong way, but that's not how I mean it!) Hubby and I treat ourselves occasionally to their delectable desserts, but not too often or we'd weigh 300 lbs each. We have never had a "bad" cupcake from Susie's - sweet, moist, delicious. I'm drooling just thinking about them. We tried the gelato this past weekend and were not disappointed. I tried the chocolate, with bits of cake interspersed throughout. It was awwwwesome. Hubby tried the Rolo, and while he didn't care for the caramel (what do you expect? It's Rolo!), he still loved it. And helped me finish mine. While it can be a bit pricey, you definitely get your money's worth. read more

Yummm. I don't eat loads of sweets, so when I do I indulge! I had been begging and pleading to the bf to take me to Susie's Shortbreads in Bayer's Lake since the place opened. So yesterday, to my astonishment my pleading worked! I was ecstatic! As soon as I walked in the door the sweet smell of cake and sugar overcame me, like I said I was excited! So much to choose from; cookies, gelato, mini cheesecakes and yes, CUPCAKES! I had a chocolate and peanut butter cupcake. The cake was moist and the frosting delicious, the bf had a peppermint frosting chocolate cupcake, his was good too! I even had chocolate milk to go with (not a huge milk fan). So, the downside? Susie charges an awful lot for her goods! I'm cheap so spending $10 on a couple of cupcakes and drinks seems a bit much. But, because the cupcakes are so good I will be back and next time I'll probably try the gelato! read more

I love the Bayers Road location in all of it's pink retroness and love also the many cupcake novelty items for sale. I had my daughter's birthday party here last year and all the girls had a blast. The deserts were delicious. We bought a half dozen specialty cupcakes and a package of the sugar shortbread cookies. The 2 ladies there this Sunday afternoon were not pleasant, curt and impatient while my kids were choosing their treats. After every item we chose the we asked "is that it". Will go again but never on weekends. The deserts are sweet but your staff are sour and their service was the absolute minimum. Every our young children noticed after our 8 year daughter asked "why are those 2 girls so mad?" Great snacks but the customer service was totally shabby. read more

Okay, I was jumping up for joy when I noticed Susie's Shortbreads now has a second location!!!!!!!!!! This is amazing, and I'm not surprised that they are doing so well. Their cupcakes are delicious, every flavor. Although I haven't tried every single flavor, I know there is no way I could possibly be disappointed. They are always so fresh and I love that you can now "build your own cupcake." As soon as you walk in, you're greated by the staff and the smell of sweetness fills the air. I have always loved Susie's cupcakes but I was surprised with a mini birthday cake last night from Susie's. Not only was it cute, it was delicious and nice and lemony (it was the lemon lovers). I've really wanted to go here for a long long time. I finally got there and splurged on a little container of shortbread cookies ($10 for 24) and a couple cupcakes. The shortbread were ok- a little dry and crunchy for me, I prefer mine a little soft but had good flavour. The cupcakes were disappointing. At $4 each I was expecting something amazing. And they looked so good! I got a classic vanilla with buttercream and a vanilla with coconut icing. The cake was dry and dense. Very sad, but the cupcakes from superstore with buttercream icing are 100x better, and you get six for the price of one from Susie's. Very disappointing but I don't think I would return. read more

The first time I saw Susie's shortbreads was when I was years ago. I was a tourist in Halifax and dreamed of living here. I went to the Seaport Market and there were these heavenly cupcakes. I fell in love instantly. When I moved here, I had no idea they had a shop until about a year later when speaking to the gentleman who is always at the market. I explained that he never had my favourite cupcakes anymore (coconut lemon) and he said they are always at the shop in Bayers lake.. what a surprise! I've have went to this lovely place and the service is just phenomenal! If it's a busy day, they will almost always be able to make you a cupcake as they always have a few vanilla and chocolate ones in the bake. For example, I love the peppermint one but hate chocolate cupcakes, they are more than welcoming to give it to me on a vanilla cupcake. I don't think I've ever had a better experience at a cupcake store. I will definitely be back and you better bet I tell everyone about my love for Susie and the amount of icing!! Yummy! read more

Delicious!! This is a great place to pick up a little treat, for you OR for someone special! I was first introduced to these scrumptious things when a friend bought me some for my birthday...After I ate all 6 in a far too short of time, I took a hiatus from Suzie's for fear of my body blowing up. Well after some time away, I recently reconnected and boy was I happy I did! The selection seems endless but I would say: Dulce de Leche, Lemon Coconut, and Cookies and Cream are my faves! I think the icing is what makes the cupcake unreal...even if it is a bit more than any 1 person needs...doesn't stop me from eating it all! They also sometimes have the end of day/day old ones for a much lower cost, which is something I just found out on my trip in for an evening snack! Yipeeee! Cheap and delicious!! End result is, if you have not tried their cupcakes...you need to have a birthday and demand cupcakes for your party! read more

Here's the thing: I love to support local and Susie's is that. However, that sometimes isn't enough. The cupcakes I love, a lot! I am an icing person and I have yet to taste any as good as theirs. Even at almost $4 each, I'd pay it for a treat or special occasion as I like them that much. However, the shortbread's, in my opinion are nothing to write home about and way too expensive. I also have a problem with their 'frequent buyer cupcake card." There's a maximum of 2 stamps per visit?!? That's not right, it should be at least 4 especially considering the amount you are paying for them. I'm also a big believer in good customer service and on a couple of occasions, we just simply did not receive that. Won't get into all the details but the fact is, you should appreciate your good customers, people who have supported your business from early on and continued to do so. After a few incidents that just simply turned me off, I'm no longer buying from them. Its too bad because as I stated, I really do love the cupcakes. But I can live without them, read more

They have a large selection throughout the day, everything is fresh and they have fun seasonal flavours that are always changing. Having a love affair with sweets & baked goods & being a confectionery connoisseur, I was excited to stumble upon Susie's Shortbreads in Bayer's Lake. Unfortunately, my choice to indulge my love affair here ended about as pleasantly as another story of an affair: Fatal Attraction. First the decor: Advertised as "retro malt shop", I was enthusiastic to be transported back in time. My destination ended up being a space engulfed in a shade of pink that makes Pepto Bismal look like a mild hue in comparison. My sight wasn't the only sense assaulted as I entered the doors; a sickening, overwhelming sweet aroma nearly knocked me senseless & gave me as instant headache. I was grateful that my order could be packed to go. The general, overall cleanliness of the establishment wasn't a point of concern, thankfully. However, the absence of hats &/or hairnets for colleagues entering/working in the kitchen was surprising. I also noticed the canisters, which stored the "famous" shortbread cookies, looked to be dusty & have a film of grease, prompting me to question the freshness of the product as well as frequency of rotation when new cookies are added. Now, onto the purpose of my visit: the sweets. I chose to go the traditional route, thinking, "Certainly their traditional flavours are practiced & perfected! How could you go wrong? " Challenge accepted; it was...wrong. The overpriced traditional shortbread (additionally chosen as the container was the cleanest of the lot) was greasy but still dry somehow, flavourless, & topped with a neon-hued dollop of frosting which tasted like it was right from a canister sold in the grocery aisle. I had high hopes for the Susie's Classic cupcake, as this was my treat of choice: cupcakes. Sadly, Susie's Shortbread wound up 0-2. The cupcake itself was dry (again, I questioned the freshness of the product); the icing (again, more neon pink) was not creamy, like you'd expect from a buttercream, but densely thick, dry, & crusted & there was far too much of it. In regards to the taste, should you consider "overly sweet" a flavour, well then it was packed full of it. If you're looking for real flavour in your cupcake, then by those standards it was lacking. For the cost, I'd expect the use of premium ingredients resulting in better taste, texture, & flavour; one taste & I knew that wasn't the case. Sad to say, I finished neither the shortbreads nor the cupcake. This was a blessing for my waistline, but a blow to my bank account after my total being nearly what a workday lunch would've cost. Should you be craving sweets, I suggest you steer clear of Susie's Shortbreads & either make your own at home or venture elsewhere, even a grocery store. You'll get far better taste, quality, & value; your sweet tooth & bank account will also thank you for it! read more
