East Coast Bakery - Bagels and dog cookies - Bagels Near Me - Halifax, Nova Scotia

To be honest, I've been eyeing this place for a while, but never dared walk into a bakery, as I don't feel as hip, I suppose. Luckily today, my girlfriend dragged me outta the house to go visit this shop. As the door opened up, you can smell the warm, aroma, and magic of the bakery. There's more than just bagels - there's cookies! Challah bread, and bagels! The owner was super awesome and friendly to share what he had left (we got there an hour till close so everything was sold out). I was surprised by their cookie selection and something I definitely wanna get more of next time. Being that it was only our first visit, We went with 6 bagels, consisting of poppy, sesame, and pretzel bagels and a cookie. During our time my eyes probably lit up because the owner was generous to not only let us sample the cookie, but when we got home, we found an extra pretzel bagel! The bagels are awesome, super soft and light in the inside, without being thin, and then the outer crust is such a nice variation of a nice crunch crispiness... idek how to describe. The pretzel bagels seems to have a little denser inside, with a perfect sprinkle of salt on each. We had them with butter and also in a BLT sandwich. The cookies are so perfectly sized, flat enough to be large, and filling, yet not super flat that they're like crackers. It's perfectly chewy in the middle, and got that mmHHMMMmmm crunch to the sides!! love these, gotta get more next time My oh my, this is definitely a must-try for anyone in/visiting Halifax. Imma aim to come here more often!! read more

Come on! Gerry is the bakery King of Halifax. I dropped in for the first time yesterday but it will be a weekly routine for bagels, breads and desserts including the number 1 rated chocolate chip cookie in town. I cannot recommend it enough but arrive early as I suspect he sells out most days and I was lucky arriving in the afternoon to get his last baguette. Prices are amazing value and the freshness and quality simply unmatched! read more

Amazing bagels, fluffy challah, tangy sourdough and excellent dog biscuits. Very dog friendly. The place is a local treasure.

My little guy and I were walking on Quinpool when a guy offered us samples of fresh bagels with plain and smoked salmon cream cheese on them. Ah, yes please! The bagel bites were delicious. He also invited us in to have a tour of the bakery. My dude is into any kind of construction- even construction with food. He loved seeing the bright red industrial-sized mixer, bagel making machine (sorry, didn't catch the technical term) and huge shiny ovens. After juniour devoured the samples, I guilt-got a half-dozen to go for $4.65. Sesame seed were still in oven. Sure, I'll wait six minutes for my favourite. I chatted with some of the staff. Turns out the guy peddling samples is also the business owner/head baker. He was super friendly and talkative about his business. He even helped wrangle juniour for a moment since Quinpool Road can be busy. . The bagels themselves are fantastic. Very close to what I remember Montreal bagels being in taste but a little different in texture. They are a little more dense than Izzy's Bagels in Bedford. The owner said he doesn't want to duplicate Montreal bagels exactly; he wants to do a bit of his own thing. I appreciate that. The store is bright, open and super clean. The owner explained he wanted a "nothing to hide" approach when setting up the bakery. It would have been nice to sit down and enjoy the still warm from the oven bagels. They could use some kind of eat in area even if it was a couple tables. Hope this is in the works. The selection was pretty limited to three types: sesame seed, plain and poppy seed. It would be nice to see some more flavours. One of staff said they were going to try making Montreal steak spice bagel. Yes! I usually have to make the trek all the way to Izzy's for good bagels. Not any more. I look forward to getting my carb fix at East Coast Bakery. read more

if you're in the hunt for a bagel - stop looking, getting in your car, and pick up a half dozen. they are fresh, fluffy, and freeze well! my favourite flavours would have to be the everything and pretzel bagel. don't be fooled by the sounds of a cinnamon sugar bagel, it's something that's needs to be tried once and you'll realize it's a better treat than a donut. and the Challah buns require a special shout-out. one is always eaten immediately upon purchase. read more

WHY IS EVERYONE NOT FILLING THIS SHOP ALL THE TIME? THEIR BAGELS ARE DELICIOUS! I'm a fan of focus. I like this place because they focus on one thing - bagels of a few different flavours - and do them very well. They're delicious, and just the right texture. I haven't had bagels this good since I lived down the street from a Jewish bakery in London. I'm worried that East Coast Bakery aren't going to last, though: their Quinpool location often looks empty to me (it probably isn't the perfect spot for foot traffic), they're doing some sign-spinning out front to get people's attention, and I've seen them give away free bagels at the south end Sobeys. I hope I'm wrong, and they're making a go of it, though. I'll keep buying bagels here. Note: 6 bagels minimum purchase. read more

I have a Nut-Allergy which makes eating out difficult and getting anything at a bakery near impossible. When I found this place I was so happy to finally be able to get things without worry, or just to be able to get anything at all. The owner goes above and beyond, and is very knowledgeable about what's in the ingredients used. Everything is perfect, clean, and tastes amazing. Can't wait to go back! read more

For those of you expecting great things along the lines of Montreal style... no.... just no. If you like Sobey's or Costco bagels - you will probably like these a lot. As I find them similar in flavour but obviously fresh which is what I think is good about this place... its makes fresh bagels. But that's it.... In terms of my favorites - there are only 2 options in the HRM New- Bagels - Montreal Style in Dartmouth. For any of you who have been in a Montreal Bagel shop - this is the real deal.. the family that runs it worked in the industry in Montreal.. and spent a bunch of cash to set it up right... wood fired oven - always fresh in the bin sesame (plus a ton of other flavours) right down to the boil in Honey water which give Montreal Bagels their chewy sweet flavour. they have a variety of other things there but were talking bagels. EDIT - oh yeah - the prices are Great. Izzy's on the Bedford high way... the flavour are awesome, the lack of hole makes spreading the cream cheese on them so easy , and again fresh every day. For those unaware - their recipes seem to be a complete copy of the great Canadian bagel - which is a good thing :) I realize these are 2 totally different types of bagels and that's my point - sometimes you want a doughy plump bread ring... other times a sweet chewing Montreal Bagel. If you are trapped on the peninsula sure... check this place out, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. read more

After purchasing East Coast Bakery's bagels this morning, still warm from the oven, my husband and I couldn't wait to try them. Literally. We devoured two sitting in the car in our parking spot. I had read about real bagels before. On food sites I visit they would wax poetic about bagels and condemn those who toast them -saying only old or inferior bagels need to be toasted. I didn't really know what they were talking about until now. These bagels were absolutely fantastic. Crusty outside and soft inside, slightly sweet and warm to the touch. When we bought our bagels we bought cream cheese to go with them. Just FYI this means you are buying a container of cream cheese (my husband was very surprised). This is not a sandwich shop. They will give you a knife to spread it on your bagels. I cannot wait for the next time I get to go to East Coast Bakery. So excited that these guys have moved in! read more

I have made two trips to this bagel shop and I have yet to have a single bagel.... Visit 1: I arrive on a Monday morning, 7 am (the shop advertises as opening at 7 am). I ask which type of bagels they have on offer but I am informed that they were "running about 30 minutes behind schedule". Huh? I can't get a bagel at 7 am on a Monday morning? Maybe set your alarm for half an hour early to insure that you can serve customers when you are supposed to be open for business. While annoying I decided to give them another chance 2 days later. Which brings me to visit 2.... Visit 2: 11:30 am Wednesday morning. They are open AND they have bagels to buy. I am on my way out of town so I ordered 2 bagels to go. But I am told by staff that I must buy 6 or 12 and they will not sell me 2 bagels. I recounted the story of visit 1 but for whatever reason they refused to sell me 2 bagels. Are you kidding me? It's disappointing that a new business chose to treat a customer like this. Needless to say I will not be returning. If you are looking for great Montreal style bagels stick with Izzy's on the Bedford Highway- great bagels, great customer service. read more

A little hole in the wall bakery that you don't want to miss! It's past Preston St. but before Canadian Tire. While there isn't a huge variety to choose from, it is fresh and yummy! Bagels, buns and most baked treats are sold by the half dozen. The most challenging thing about this bakery is finding someone to split your order with so you can try more things without being a piggy. There were only six bagel flavours and they do have a nice tug/pull texture. The cookies were big and fairly flat in shape, not overly sweet. The brownies were satisfying. The chocolate challah bread will probably have me coming back. Only catch is that they only bake these up on the weekends. This bakery also closes by 3 pm, so plan accordingly so you won't be disappointed! read more

I love Montreal and New York bagels, so you can imagine my excitement to hear about this new local bakery opening up on Quinpool Road. Fresh made daily, friendly staff, and according to the local buzz, an East Coast twist on Montreal style bagels: http://www.localxpress.ca/news/2016/5/13/montreal-bagel-shop Eagerly bought my first dozen, freshly made and still warm, annnd........ Disappointment :-( Sadly, they tasted not much different or better than the ones baked daily in the local supermarket. Maybe Haligonians won't know the difference, but anyone who has experienced the real thing in Montreal or New York - the texture, the flavour, chewy and delicious - will know. Before you brand me as a bagel snob, it CAN be done in Halifax. Years ago, on Quinpool Road, a shop called Yenta's Bagels made wares that would rival anything from New York or Montreal. I sure hope they figure out the secret... read more

This is my kind of bagels. Don't get me wrong, I do buy bagels from Costco too, but if I could choose I'd rather have this kind of handmade bagels everyday. A nice balance of saltiness and chewiness. Nothing beats a fresh bagel that just came out of the oven! I've had them from three separate occasions. My favorite is their everything bagels and sesame bagels. They're not skimpy on the sesames or the seeds. My kids love these bagels, they call them "salty bagels". Another favorite of mine, even though it's not bagels, is their sweet bread rolls. It reminds me of the Asian or Japanese sweet bread that often have custard filling inside. (However, these ones don't have fillings.) read more

I drive by this bakery on my way to work in the morning and always see people with signs advertising. I decided to drop in and buy 1/2 a dozen (3 sesame, 3 poppyseed). A little bit sad they didn't have everything bagels.. I had to make this post because I was completely offended when someone compared these bagels to Fairmount in Montreal. Although they are small and try to be.. they aren't. These bagels are flavourless. I'd rather buy frozen St. Viateur bagels from Sobeys/Petes. I know this review sounds harsh, but I was extremely disappointed. read more

Their challah buns are absolutely amazing! The bagels and cookies are also delightful and the owner is lovely and friendly.

Contrary to what the other reviews say East Coast bakery and the owner Gerry is great. His products are fresh, flavourful and fantastic. For those who are critical of his bagels not being a Montreal style bagel you're right they are not however they are not supposed to be nor does he claim they are. If you take the time talk to him, he will describe the inspiration behind his bagels. Obviously they have not or I would not have to be writing this. Keep up the great work Gerry! read more

ECB is my favorite place for bagels. They are so fresh and delicious, I eat them plain out of the bag at least 3 at a time. If you haven't gone there yet you should know they also offer Challah breads, loaves, and rolls and now cookies! AND if you rent with Killam Apartments they are part of their Perks programs, which means 2 extra bagels! ! read more

Fantastic Bagels, the challah bread is to die for, this place is a little gem. A prime example of the kind of shops I like to see on Halifax's retail streets. The smell of freshly baked loaves draws me in every time I walk by, this place truly adds to our community, thanks east coast bakery, keep up the good work! PS: I noticed a lot comments comparing east coast bakery to Montreal bagels, they're different, nonetheless exceptional, try the "all in" my personal favourite. read more

They are darn fine bagels. Not exactly the same calibre as Hebrew style Montreal bagels, but close. They're hand stretched and rolled and boiled in honey water like at the legendary St. Viature and Fairmont Bagel but without wood fired ovens there's something a bit different. Anyhoo - happy to have this local business just down the street trying their best to bring an excellent product to Halifax. I'll definitely be back! read more

Love this place! So happy there's a local spot to grab still-warm bagels fresh out of the oven - nothing better! The staff are always super nice and they often have free samples out, which is a nice little perk! I always grab 1 or 2, or 3... The bagels themselves are really good and fairly priced, I don't know why some other people have judged them otherwise. I've spent time in Montreal eating bagels from Fairmount and St-Viateur and while these aren't exactly the same, who cares? They're still excellent bagels and way, way better than anything you'll get at the grocery store. A little more dense but otherwise so good. Also their Challah is amazing. I haven't bought a loaf yet but after tasting so many samples I plan on it. Thank you East Coast Bakery! Keep doing what you're doing! read more

Finally, an alternative to the frozen bagels from Montreal. Very good.

Just discovered this place and Im in love. For over-entitled types who expect a red carpet laid out etc this place aint for you, their focus is so clearly on the product. The sesame and poppyseed bagels were wonderful and went great with lox and cream cheese. The challah was good and quite authentic which I wasnt expecting. This place definitely just made a regular customer out of me! read more

Noticed them while checking out this stretch of Quinpool... Took a taste, bought a half dozen and INSTANTLY this is the new go-to for fresh Montreal-style bagels in Halifax! Totally faithful to the density and flavours of that style, no matter how the oven is fueled. Excellent discovery - worth making a special trip to this store, and frequently! read more

After living close to this bakery for two years and smelling the freshly baked bread every morning, I finally decided to pop in yesterday. Boy, am I happy I did. They gave me an extra bagel on the house, and only charged $4 for 6 bagels in the first place! Not only is this super affordable, but I've had two of their bagels so far, as well as a cookie, and I have been in love with everything so far! It's definitely a unique taste to bagels. Made with sourdough bread, it doesn't taste like your "usual" bagel, but that's something I like about it! Not only is the food good, but the guy who works there was SO NICE AND KIND. He brightened up my day, and was so enthusiastic. A great place. read more

This place is unreal! Best bagel I've ever had, hands down. Affordable pricing and an overall great atmosphere

Best bagels & baked goods in Atlantic Canada!!! Gerry the owner is very passionate about customer satisfaction and product perfection. What more can you ask for. Keep up the great work! The challah bread and All-In bagels are phenomenal. A must try for everyone! read more

My husband and I stopped at the East Coast Bakery this morning. In front of the shop were a few people with a couple of dogs and a dog bowl filled with water. Walking around them to enter the shop, one of the women held the door for us and said she'd be with us as soon as she washed her hands! Thank goodness there was another woman behind the counter. We bought the smallest loaf of challah bread I have ever seen for $5, when I asked for a couple of bagels I was told they are only sold by the 1/2 dozen, that was ok so I got the 1/2 doz. Trying to eat the goodies was another thing. The challah bread was too sweet and a little doughy, the bagels were so tough I couldn't pull them apart. When I finally got a small piece off it was tasteless. My husband got one apart and found it rather doughy! This may have something to due with the fact that as soon as they came out of the oven the bagels were dumped in the basket to be sold before they were cooled. I must say we were very disappointed and definitely won't return. Too bad I can't give this a 1/2 star! read more

I feel generous giving this location even one whole star. My partner and I walked past while the owner was on the sidewalk passing out samples. I took one and felt pressured to take another to which I responded that I was okay. After still more naggling I told him I couldn't because I was on a diet. I thanked him for the sample and continued on only to hear him mocking my response about my dietary choices to his co-worker. The rude exchange aside, the bagels were bland and tasteless, noticeable even beneath the slathering of cream cheese. I will not be going back - Pete's offers better bagels for a better price. read more

I have lived in Montreal practically all my life (49 years and counting), but like to travel and visit places around the world. I have only ever sent in reviews of restaurants the ancient way - letters to The Hour years ago and never through social media, but after a wonderful experience in Halifax, I may just give up my embargo and get with the times. My stop in Halifax was part of a two-week holiday in the Maritimes. I was feeling peckish and was walking down Quinpool when I spotted a guy with a sign yelling "bagel - bagel - bagel!" He was putting on quite a show, offering bagel samples and tossing out Rodney Dangerfield-like one liners. What a riot. Anyway, I had a couple of bite-sized samples (maybe a little more than a couple) and was blown away. In my previous visit to the Maritimes 12 years ago, I had lamented the fact that you couldn't get a decent bagel anywhere except for (what tasted like) repeatedly frozen and thawed St-Viateur bagels at the supermarket, yuck. These East Coast Bakery bagels reminded me of Fairmount bagels from Montreal, which I swear by (buying two dozens every week) but tasted and looked somewhat different. I got to talking with the guy (Gerry is his name) and was not surprised to find out that he was originally from Montreal, but had decided to open up a business in Halifax after a visit some four years ago. He said that his bagels were his original recipe, and unlike Montreal-style bagels or any other bagels that he knew of, contained a portion of sour dough. He was nice enough to take the time to personally give me a tour of the place. Very impressive. Spotless and modern, great design. He told me that he wanted to bring a quality product to Haligonians and that he wanted to put Halifax on the map as one of the epicurean capitals of North America. This guy's ambitious, but I don't doubt his sincerity. I wound up purchasing a half-dozen sesame and a half-dozen poppy seed bagels fresh out of the oven. Gerry threw in a couple of sesame bagels on the house in addition to a salmon-flavoured cream cheese container. I reluctantly left, but filled with good vibes. After wolfing down the lot of them in one afternoon, I can state that without a doubt these are the best bagels in the Maritimes. Good luck and bon succès Gerry! read more
