I haven't been in Halifax for at least 5 years but coming back and seeing Cabin Coffee still at the corner brought back warm memories. This place is cozy with warm comfy chairs and a cabin vibe. The baked goods are homemade - brought out from the back in warm trays. The drip coffee is very tasty and they have a wide selection of lattes. The service is great and the staff is friendly. We were there everyday for coffee and breakfast sandwiches (sometimes for eating in and takeout). The breakfast sandwiches are great but I prefer the bagel option versus the english muffin. Also don't pick - just get both the ham and bacon! I am a monster so needed both meat because the slices of bacon and ham are thin. Decided to give Cabin Coffee on Slater /Hollis another chance today....big mistake, they take my name for my order and when it is ready give it to someone else, then give me push back when I want a refund (which the workers did not know how to process for some reason) for the part of the order I didn't take when I didn't want to wait for them to remake my order and inconvenience the ppl who ordered after me. After over a decade in food service I can tell you starting an argument and down playing my wasted time is not good service. I'm amazed on how bad service has got there in the last 8-12 months.It's gone from a place I went every week day before work and suggested to friends, to a place of last resort.....wish the service was as good as the coffee. read more

And I live up to the stereotype of a writer working at a coffee shop. Cabin Coffee has become one of the my two top coffee shops in all of Halifax to go to. And believe me, I've been to all of them! Atmosphere - Very Canadian. And you feel like you're in a cabin sooo....the name makes sense. Huge, comfortable chairs and couches. And as many as one could squeeze into the space. It's not cramped at all but they couldn't accommodate say more than fifty when it comes to sitting around. Also everything is very clean and taken care of. Staff - Wonderful! Friendly, efficient, always on top of things and willing to please. I think this says a lot about the management. If the staff are happy, it'll show. I can't tell you how many coffee shops have the terrible philosophy that the employees should fake being happy even if they are not. That doesn't seem to be the case here. Everyone is working hard and want to please every customer. Food & Drink - I can't tell you how many times I've wanted different flavoured coffee. This is the ONLY place in the city I think exists that has it. They have everything else you'd expect in a coffee shop and it's good quality. But their sandwiches are, I'd say relatively a buck or two less than every other coffee shop in the city but without skimping on anything. My only wish is that they'd have different flavoured chips cause I'm not a plain chip person. BUT that keeps me from eating them so my love-handles thank you. Wifi - I find the wifi is always strong. It's not crazy fast but it gets the job done. Noise Level - I have a hearing disorder so very loud places can disturb me. The noise level here is generally great. The music isn't blaring and because there aren't a hundred people in here at a time, it's relatively good. Conclusion - Don't come here. I want to always have a seat for me. If everyone finds out about it, it'll be too packed and I won't get my favourite chair. read more

Cabin Coffee is easy to pass by if you're not looking for it, and given its locale and the nature of downtown coffee shops, unless you're working in the very immediate vicinity, you're likely not. But maybe you should... My girlfriend had a couple gift certificates for here that were gathering dust, so I inherited them so that they didn't go to waste. I popped by after a set of night shifts as unfortunately they're not open quite early enough to go to before my day shifts. But hey, breakfast for dinner is a good thing. It's a pretty big space, especially for a coffee shop, and it's chock full of Canadiana. And not just the little stuff, but a stone hearth and fireplace, moose, full sized canoe, and large murals. It borders on tacky, but at the same time it's a refreshing departure from the cookie cutter feel of chain coffee shops or your run of the mill coffee place with a cooler for sandwiches. There's plenty of comfy couches and arms chairs s well as tables as chairs. They hadn't been open for long so I was able to order quickly, going for their breakfast bun special - a toasted English muffin with a fried egg, cheese, and bacon or ham; naturally, I went with the bacon. This, plus a medium coffee was a mere $4 plus tax. I tacked on a couple of their pinwheels, one for myself and one to take home to my girlfriend so that I wasn't the sole beneficiary of this free food. I got my coffee and pinwheels immediately, while my breakfast sammy was cooked. It's your typical cinnamon roll/pin wheel, except cooked in a muffin tin, so the outer edges were just a bit crispy without being dry. The filling was fine; really, it's hard to mess up brown sugar and cinnamon. The best part, and I'm not sure if this was by design or accident, was the crisp layer of sugar the bottom of the pinwheel from the filling leaking out and hardening as it cooked. So good. My breakfast sandwich was out shortly after. The English muffin was a bit larger than the ubiquitous Ben's version or McDonald's, and was nice and evenly toasted; no burnt edges here. The toppings were all pretty middle of the road, nothing was bad, but not particularly memorable at the same time either. Just a reliable breakfast sandwich, which is A-OK. My medium roast coffee was a little bland, even for my unsophisticated coffee palate, but it caffeinated me well enough to get some things done when I got home. I was glad I finally made it to try Cabin Coffee, and I'm happy to see them chugging along in a world full of corporate chains. Stopped here for breakfast when my old job had me going downtown. Really nice little coffee shop, very cozy. Staff ranged from super friendly to surly, sort of felt like a grab bag when it came to how they'd respond to me, I never knew how they were going to act. Coffee and breakfast sandwich were both really tasty though, and cheaper than the same offerings you can get at Tim Hortons. Loved this coffee shop! Here on business and happened to find this gem to sit and read my book. Wonderfully comfortable big brown chairs, rustic look, and plenty of seating options. The coffee was very decent, and they had many treats to choose from, including some delicious looking cinnamon rolls and muffins of which I did not partake. Service is terrible. There were three people behind the counter, yet all the empty tables still had dirty dishes on them from previous patrons. One patron actually cleared off the dishes from one table and put the dishes on another table that was cluttered with dirty dishes. It's hard to go wrong when a coffee shop slings Java Blend roasts, pair it with so fresh they melt in your mouth baked goods (the peanut butter rolls are outrageous), and big comfy leather chairs to enjoy it all in. Cabin Coffee really is like a throwback to when coffee shops were places you actually spent time to unwind, relax, and feel inspired rather than industrial designed service stops where frantic professionals end up out of necessity like a car at a gas station. It's warm, cozy, friendly, and attracts a diverse crowd that will never get you caught up in someone else's circle of stressy gravity. I do have one big gripe though. It's a coffee shop without wireless internet access. No really, you read that right. To me, that's almost inexcusable. The staff are friendly and the drinks are tasty. They have fair trade, organic beans and can whip you up the espresso bevie of your liking in no time flat. They also have snacks, and lunchy items so you can sate your pressing hunger while relaxing on one of the cosy couches. I like to snag a spot by the window, especially on Saturday, so that I can watch the market traffic filter through the side streets. You can also cop-a-squat outside in one of the lovely lawn chairs. It seems perpetually busy, so maybe you'll even meet some friendly folks during your java-visit. If you're a tea connoisseur, fear not for they have many varieties to choose from. In Halifax for a conference, and decided to stop by Cabin Coffee for a quick breakfast. The place was packed, most likely because of other visitors from the conference, but we managed to find a place to sit after placing our order. The staff seemed very overwhelmed by the amount of customers (the line was out the door), but they worked efficiently and were very friendly. You place your order at the cash, then they give you a number and bring the food to you. I got a BLT sandwich and a mocha latte - total came to around $11. The sandwich comes in a bagel (which you get to choose), and while it wasn't really worth the $6, it was toasty and hearty. Overall, a pleasant experience. So I don't work downtown anymore, so I haven't been able to go here for lunch like I used to a lot a few years ago. I tried it for a Saturday morning breakfast around 8:45 recently and it was okay. They don't have a big menu for hot breakfast items, so I just tried the egg & bacon on an English muffin, which looked boring and bland, but was okay. There was nothing special on it, but it still satisfied. The cute cabin-like atmosphere is still enjoyable to just sit and relax with a book, especially if you feel like a cozier spot toward the back. I will come back for lunch though at some point soon on a weekend, since I miss the hummus sandwich that I used to get, on a soft, warm whole wheat bun. read more

The thing I love best about Cabin Coffee is the comfort factor...lots of space (so you can talk to your friend without everyone else in on the conversation), comfy leather couches and chairs and best of all, especially since today was freezing - a working fireplace. And as long as you're a Bell Aliant customer, there's internet access as well. Not to mention tasty cinnamon buns, muffins and daily soups, salads and sandwiches. Staff is friendly and efficient, what more could you want in a coffee house?
