Downtown can sometimes being exhausting when walking around for a few hours. Up the hill we go walking back to Spring garden to the car I stumbled over Cabin Coffee and stopped for a Chi La-ta. Relaxed atmosphere with over sized leather coaches and chairs housed in what looks like the inside of a log cabin which I love. Well I had my heart set on sipping my Chi outside in the Adirondack chairs in the sun. Super excited that I passed by all the delicious treats and goodies that are staring at you through the glass saying eat me especially the cinnamon buns OMG yumm.. Well after paying $3.30 for a med Chi I went outside and sat down and blew on it to cool. WOW was I disappointed to find that I had a watered down cup! and threw it in the trash after my first sip. The food and coffee are of a high quality. Tasty stuff. The service is so 'meh' like they don't want you there. The speed of getting food is so slow, it is often not as hot as expected. One of the must check-out cafes on my go-to-cafes-in-halifax list, this places did not disappoint. Staying true to its namesake, !wow! the cozy cabin look of the interior had a welcoming feel to it. The morning that I came here it was cold, grey and breezy outside but when I stepped inside I just could feel the decor getting me feeling warmed-up and winded-down without even having to look for a working fireplace :-) Since I was a need of breakfast with my coffee I got the breakfast special. Great english muffin sandwich and great tasting coffee. They just hit the spot while I decided to get comfortable for awhile before getting started on my tour of downtown Halifax. This place is also well-known to the guests who stay at the nearby hotels because group after group came just shortly after I had paid for my order. Cabin Coffee is everything I could want in a coffeeshop. I've been working remotely from Halifax for two weeks now, and hit nearly all of the coffeeshops in South End and downtown. Cabin is the best. The coffee is quite good, and there are tasty soups and sandwiches available cheap-cheap. It has sort of a hipster atmosphere, but staff are friendly and without the attitude that you often encounter in such a place. WiFi works well, chairs are super comfy, there seem to be plenty of outlets, no one has busted my chops for camping to work from my laptop for hours on end, several days in a row now. I'm actually writing this from Cabin, taking a break from work. I'd love to have a coffeeshop like this back in Washington DC, but local douchebags would probably Destroy it. Had coffee here twice while in Halifax. They have an excellent choice of coffee options and delicious pastries.

I would estimate that I walk through the doors at Cabin Coffee 9 or 10 times per week. I'll normally go in the early morning before work and read a few comics while I drinks some delicious house blend coffee or a banana. Most days I will then come back around lunch time to enjoy a Beefeater Sandwich combo. Through all this, I've finally amassed enough confidence to write a full review on the Cabin. As someone that generally does not like coffee shop culture, the following should really show how much I enjoy the Cabin. Price: 4/5 The prices at the Cabin are actually very reasonable. A Sandwich with a handfull of potato chips and a pickle (quarter pickle) comes to about $5. An extra large coffee come to roughly $2.25. The only things that seem a little over priced are the sweet snacks. Regardless of what you're looking for (muffin, cookie, scone, etc) it'll come to about $2.25. They're delicious and home made, but $2 is still a bit much for a single cookie. Location: 5/5 Very convenient location. My workplace is only about a 5 minute walk away, and so is most of the downtown area, it being located a block down from the corner of Barrington and Spring Garden. Atmosphere: 5/5 It may be the Cape Bretoner in me, but it's hard to not like a place that is decorated to feel like a cabin in the woods. A fake moose head over the fireplace, shabily constructed tables, comfy arm chairs and couches, foliage painted on some of the walls, etc. Also the music they've got playing ranges from Maritime to folk to easy listening, which is super chill. Food: 5/5 Delicious. Can't put it any other way. Mostly serving sandwiches, soup, and homemade goodies all over. Great for lunches, breakfast or even a quick break. The only other reason that Cabin Coffee loses any more points is because of..... WIRELESS... Yes, Ben B. called it pretty good below. A coffee shop needs wireless. Cabin, unfortunately, has none. What they do have is a "Aliant Hotspot", which is useless if you're not a Bell Aliant customer, or don't want to shell out a randomly agreed upon $7 for anywhere between half an hour and 2 hours of internet time. You can grab SOME wireless if you sit in the very back of the room, but it's a pretty weak signal, and it's from the hotel across the street. A Coffee Shop should have enough appreciation for their customers to purchase Wifi, and give it to their customers to use for free (this would also encourage more customers to come stick around more). All in all, Cabin Coffee is a great coffee shop. Great for early mornings, great for lunches, great for meetings, great for dates, all around pretty great. read more

Despite having some of the most inconsistent muffins in town, I'm a fan. The coffee is Java Blend, the atmosphere is the kind of cabin no one actually has, but everyone wishes they did, and the food is good. You make a decent corn chowder (sans bacon, so I'm happy about that) on a regular basis, the curried lentil and mulligatawny soups are tasty. I like the BLT and the breakfast sandwich (the latter being great for the accidental weekday hangover). But the muffins? While they're always fresh and tasty, they are inconsistent in one key way: the stuff you put in a muffin. When they're done right, I love the blueberry/cranberry muffin. But I never know when that's going to work out for me. Sometimes, I get two blueberries and a cranberry on the top of the muffin and then nothing inside. Other times, it's full of blueberries and cranberries (best). And still other times there appear to be rogue chocolate chips. I don't understand. The small coffee is quite petite, so when you just want a small cup of coffee, this is the place to go - just don't expect a Starbucks sized tall cup. And you know? Having a smallish coffee is good for afternoons when you don't need a lot of caffeine. read more

Cabin Coffee is easily my favorite place for an inexpensive coffee, dessert, or light lunch. The location is very close to my college, so it's not uncommon for me to visit the location daily for my caffeine fix. The coffee isn't anything over the top, but does the job especially for the low price you pay. They offer a variety of flavors and sizes to fit your needs. I recommend the Hazelnut Vanilla if you prefer a sweeter blend like myself. While waiting in line to order, I gurantee your eyes will be fixated on the display of delicious baked goods. I've never had a dessert from Cabin Coffee that I've not enjoyed yet. Some of my favorites would be their breakfast bars, oat cakes, apple turnovers, or cookies. I highly recommend adding a baked good to your order if it's your first time at the establishment. Recently, my classmates and I have been coming here for lunch as well since it's just down the street from our school. They have a lot of great options, but I particularily enjoy their sandwiches. Much like their coffee, all of the lunch options are extremely reasonably priced as well. A sandwich for $5? Count me in! The staff here also add to the charm of Cabin Coffee. I've never run into a negative experience with customer service and the one time I had a not so great coffee, they replaced it with no questions asked. You can tell the owner loves what she does and puts her heart into providing the best service, always with a smile. Overall, I highly recommend trying out Cabin Coffee instead of your usual coffee spot. There are very few places in the city that you can pay $2.50 for a large coffee that rivals many other coffee spots. Ps. One rainy Saturday I was downtown and in need of a warm cup of coffee on my way back home and thought, why not. It was conveniently right in front of me. Nothing to lose. It's so cozy inside! To me Cabin Coffee is a place I can go to enjoy a coffee and curl up in one of their chairs with a good book. I used to work just up the street from the coffee shop so I've gotten to try many items off the menu. What I love about Cabin the most is that all of their menu items are home-made. You can smell them baking when you turn the corner onto Hollis. For baked goods, their cinnamon buns are by far the best I've had in the city. Sometimes they even surprise you with apples in the centre! For food, you can't beat their all day breakfast sandwiches. Made to order with fresh ingredients, it's the perfect sandwich for anytime of the day. To top it all off, their prices are very reasonable, the staff are always friendly and, even at it's busiest lunch rush, you never have to wait very long to place an order or get food. read more

And while I haven't tried the baked goods, the lunches here are usually very solid. I've had a couple of different things -- usually their soups of the day are excellent (they do an AMAZING mulligatawny, get that if it's on the menu) --and I love me an egg salad, and Cabin's is extra good. I can't believe I've worked next door for two years and never knew the joy of these treats until just a few days ago at Ben B's recommendation. I fear I might develop an addiction to them in short order. You must try them on your next visit. Even without them, this is a good place to time out from work. I don't drink coffee (cue the gasps!) but I do like their hot chocolate and smoothies. Their baked goods are tasty, and their sandwiches hit the spot for lunch. They come with a dill pickle spear and a side of chips! Eating a tasty sandwich while sitting in their comfy chair in the lodge-like decor definitely helps remove yourself from a working frame of mind to a relaxed one. My only gripe is that first thing on Monday mornings aren't the best time to visit. A couple of times I've gone in to pick up a snack only to be given a very cold pinwheel or muffin that was obviously in the fridge overnight instead of baked that day. read more

Adorable cafe next to the Sheraton (where we were staying). Charming decors and comfortable couches, which I saw many seated there relaxing and chatting with others. We got the Breakfast Sandwich special (bacon, egg, and cheese on English muffin) as that was mainly the hot non-sweet dish there as well as the "Low-fat, Low sugar" cranberry cornmeal muffin. The sandwich was fine, but the muffin was a bit bland, which I should have expected for a "nutritious" muffin. However, I saw a nice selection of pastries including a cinnamon bun muffin (I should have gotten that!). If I lived around the area, then I would definitely consider this as a hangout cafe place. read more

Cabin Coffee is on the cusp of being a really great place. Unfortunately, while it has some features that I absolutely love, it has others that I loathe...ultimately leaving me somewhere in the middle. First of all, I love the decor. Cabin Coffee has the great ability of instantly transporting you to another place as soon as you walk inside. No longer are you in downtown Halifax, but a ski chalet after a long day on the hill. It's a great feeling and really helps set Cabin Coffee apart. The food is decent, nothing special, and like Josh before me, I've had friends find hair in their sandwich in the past. This is really not the kind of thing you want to see in any establishment so I do hope the fix this problem (and yes, if multiple people are finding this then it's definitely not an incident, but a problem at this point). A big thumbs down for the lack of free wireless Internet. It is a service provided by most coffee shops in the city and to try to make an extra buck off your patrons, to me, is a real deterrent. Perhaps they don't want their customers staying long, but it seems to me that charging for Internet will turning customers away completely. So as much as I love the decor, it's hard to recommend Cabin Coffee because of the aforementioned reasons. The good news is that the problems are easily fixed. Very good located close to the waterfront area in Halifax, Cabin Coffee offers nice options for breakfast and lunch. Very affordable, very friendly service and incredibly nice decorations. I love the ambiance they managed to create. You can enjoy coffee with a group of friends and discuss life or you can enjoy it by yourself while reading a book in a comfy chair sitting in a quite corner. I'm insistent that those four painted muskoka chairs that sit outside of Cabin Coffee are there to catch you eye and make you crave coffee. At least that is what happens to me whenever I pass on Hollis Street. My favorite thing about visiting Cabin Coffee is their amazing Organic Fair Trade Espresso drinks. My all time favorite beverage is Cafe Americano and Cabin Coffee makes an amazing one. It's clear that the baristas know what they are doing- drinks are always hot and tasty. I've eaten here a few times, and was only dissappointed by the time it took to get my order. I was looking for something a little more grab and go than what they had to offer, but the food was well made. The thing that makes this Cafe different than the dozens across the city is the uniquely relaxing decor. It is spatious and you never feel like another table will be able to hear the gossip that is shared over a coffee. I have to admit that I'm a Starbucks fan. It's hard to beat the consistency, knowing that you can get the same end result no matter which Starbucks you walk into. All that said, Cabin Coffee makes a mean latté. If you're in the neighbourhood of the Maritime Centre, this is the best place to stop in for a quick brew. The country decor can be a bit overstated, but there's no doubt that it offers comfortable surroundings and attentive counter staff. I just love a Big Comfy Couch to sit on and relax while having a coffee. They definitely got that right! The inside is fantastic here, it is full of our wonderful quirky ways of Canada, just look up and you will be greeted by the Moose Head. The fireplace is an added bonus for our chilly days here. The coffee is good, I like the flavoured once in a while to change things. I have not eaten here, just had coffee and enjoyed a relaxing chat on the sofa. What a fun spot this is. Cabin Coffee paints a picture of the warm and cosy, wooded lodge without the out of town milage. Oversized couches and chairs are paired with customary Canadian trademarks to give a real sense of 'natural habitat'. The space is inviting, with high ceilings, a fireplace and a huge moose head towering over it all. Decor is playful and doesn't take itself too seriously. Mini artificial trees are placed by the windows, along with old trophies and similar sort of trinkets. Cabin Coffee seems to invoke a sort of 'small town country cabin' right in the middle of downtown Halifax. It beats to its own drum and doesn't really try to go for any 'type' of style. Its just its own! And its all very laid back. Service does the job and you are left alone to do your business. There is a table of newspapers and magazines incase you've forgotten your reading material at home. Food is pretty standard grub and satisfying in taste-- sandwiches, sweets, breakfast goodies, coffee and tea. Its a pretty cosy spot to sit down in with its own quirks and style. I feel that Smokey the Bear would come here if he were in town. All in all, great concept with a well executed vibe. read more

This is the BEST theme for a cafe! Completely Canadian in that horribly funny, stereotypical way. There are "pine" trees (Christmas trees), bear, moose, etc. It's a cozy little spot. The food and the coffee are both really good. Unfortunately this place loses a few points for having a mouse last time I was in. I understand that Halifax as a whole has some rodent issues, but the one that I saw was perfectly comfortable with me which makes me think it had been around for a while. When I mentioned it to the girl working at the counter she obviously already knew about it. Hopefully they managed to resolve the issue as I haven't visited in over a month. Went in half an hour before close at 5:30pm and we were treated to a nearly shut down store. When we got to the counter the barista was extremely rude. She banged everything as she made our order, and after putting regular milk in a drink in which we asked for soy she said "Well you aren't allergic, you can drink it". While sitting and having our coffee the other employee went to the counter and said "Hi, I know you close soon but what's the most annoying thing I can order?" and then they both laughed. As soon as we walked out the door it was slammed shut by the barista (worth noting this was ten minutes before close) . Considering the coffee down the street at Wired Monk is better you would think they could at least focus on service. read more

Good treats, okay coffee - their cappuccino should be frothy throughout not just a lump on the top. First time here I was there for 20 min and not one employee smiled the entire time. Second time, same unhappy employees. This is the third time here (today) and theres a blonde cook who is nice and three brunettes who seem like they would rather be anywhere else.
