My wife and I were walking back to our ship along the waterfront on a beautiful day taking in all the sights before our Atlantic Crossing. They have the waterfront set up so well, especially with all the cute shop along the way. As soon as my wife saw Sugah, she headed right over. What a great candy store. This is such a great location, big and bright with plenty of candy and chocolate to choose from. The young lady behind the counter was just a delightful person answering a lot of questions and being very helpful. We were so focused on the candy, we did not realize that they also have ice cream. This is a good place for some gift purchases. You can be sure that people will enjoy whatever you get them from here. Love this quaint candy store! This is a child's dream. The kids didn't know where to turn first! We especially enjoyed the ice cream. I had sugarless salted Caramel with peanuts. It was delicious! There were a few tables and chairs outside so you could sit and watch the boats in the harbor as you ate your ice cream. I especially liked the name and the overall candy store theme. That made it very unique and interesting. Next trip to the Halifax, we definitely will stop by again! The business added the overall atmosphere of the Halifax boardwalk. read more

This is a review of the ice cream, which I've only ever had at the Public Gardens location. I wish I could write a better review because I do heart local, but Sugah! just doesn't do it for me (especially in comparison to, say, Dee Dee's). The ice cream is fine. I know it's supposed to be "hand paddled" and all, but I don't find it outstanding. The real trouble I have with Sugah! is that my peanut allergy prevents me from ever having a mix-in. This is super sad given that some of the mix-ins sound amazing! I'm surprised it took me as long as it did to visit Sugah! - I'm a huge ice cream fan and love stores that sell fun candy items. First off, I love the atmosphere in the store. It's open, clean feeling and filled with color and tasty items - a great place to find the perfect gift. I patiently waited in line for 45 minutes during Open City to test out their ice cream for 1/2 price (don't worry visitors, you wouldn't have a wait like that on regular day) and it was definitely worth the wait. After weighing my options, I went for a coffee ice cream base with a cookie dough addition. What I really like about their additions are that you have more to choose from then just candy additions - they have cranberries, nuts, fudge and other ingredients that extend beyond the traditional peanut butter cups and chocolate chips (not that there is anything wrong with either). The service was one of the highlights for me. Even after having served the large line (that didn't stop behind me), they were still super friendly and patient. Why am I attracted to candy shops and anything sweet? One of my cousin's husbands said it must be a genetic defect because almost every one of my relatives on my Mom's side of the family have a sweet tooth. On the way back to the ship, this place, naturally, caught my attention. The name itself pulled me in. White color dominates the inside of this store. Very contemporary furnishings and fixtures. This is a mixed-to-order ice shop a-la Cold Stone Creamery, only that the ice cream they use is pretty dense-looking, and the ingredients they offer look to be of pretty high quality. They also make and sell their own chocolates with very interesting flavors. I had a dark chocolate bar with chipotle. Wow, what a balance of the deep sweetness of the chocolate finished the a slight kick from the chipotle. Needless to say, that bay did not make it back to the ship. read more

Sugah is stark and colorful, creating a scientific medical candy experiment vibe with the austere white walls and bursts of electric hues. The space on the waterfront is airy and open, not to mention bright, looking out over the harbour with ample windows and tasteful lighting. The candy selection is titillating and delicate, with chocolate bars galore and darling boxes of brittle. You'll also find parcels of candy in clear plastic baggies, perfect for picking up and strolling down the harbour walk. I haven't indulged in their ice cream yet, but have seen it made on many occasions. The hand paddled aspect is alluring, and the addition of sweeties is a no-brainer, but somehow it strikes me as simply a glamorous, more expensive blizzard. I'll reserve full judgement until I sample the frosty treat, which by the way is also available for purchase at their Public Gardens location. As far as the decadent bars of cocoa go, they're quite delicious. My favorite being the coffee bean variety, as well as the sea salt bar. I recommend a jaunt into this nifty harbour side sweet boutique. It's a great place to grab a treat on a warm summer's day, or else a souvenir if you're visiting from afar. read more

Sugah is one of those spots that makes you want to go back over and over. Watching the ladies behind the counter smash delicious toppings into creamy ice cream is deeply soothing. I can only imagine the kind of upper body strength you build up by mixing ice cream all day! The flavours of ice cream are numerous, and the topping choices even more so. Every time I go I swear I'm going to try something different, I can't resist the lure of my favourite- Strawberries with shortbread cookie pieces broken into it. Scooped into a fresh waffle cone, it's heaven on a sunny day. Or a rainy day. Or a day that ends in Y. The store is also jammed packed with shirts, candy, and some very nice fancy chocolate the shop also makes. The dark chocolate with sea salt is insanely good, and if you can't decide on one flavour over the other, they also offer gift sets so you can try more than one. One warning: This place gets PACKED at peak times during tourist season. The second seasonal location in the Public Gardens can be quieter, but the waterfront location is another story. Being at Sugah! is literally like being a kid in a candy story. It's a candy store! Full of chocolates they make themselves! And ice cream they make! And then they'll put the stuff they make into that ice cream! Does this review warrant all the exclamation marks? It kind of does. Especially after they recently help a free wine tasting that paired wines with chocolate. Y'all, I just about died and went to heaven on that one. Now, not everything about this joint is perfect. In the summer, especially on a holiday weekend, you best be prepared to line up for this place. It'll be tasty when you get to the end of the line, but it won't be cheap (it's good stuff, so worth the coin). These are just some things to keep in mind. You also may find yourself standing behind the terminally indecisive as they try to decide on ice cream flavour and ingredients (this terminally indecisive person may be me and I'm sorry about the hold up). And while Rum Runners cake seems like a good idea as an ingredient in your ice cream, I find it just ends up being soggy cake in my ice cream. But that's just me - I like to keep some space between my cake and ice cream. Chocolates you NEED to try: dark chocolate & ns sea salt (bring that bad boy home and have it with a bottle of red. You won't regret it) and the chocolate with pretzels in it. I'm also told the Garrison Brew Bar is good, but I haven't had the chance to try it. There appears to be other candies on site, but I ignore them for the stuff that's made by the folks at Sugah. For me, this place is a once and awhile treat. Why a two-star rating for a much-loved local establishment? Partly because I'm just not that crazy about them, and partly because the owner vocally opposed an increase to minimum wage. Yes, politics. Oh well, it is what it is. I've never tried their ice cream, nor have I been tempted to. Their chocolate is okay, and I'm not interested in the imported novelty candies (that's what I go to Freak Lunchbox for). They do have a great selection of their wares, they're just not for me. However, every time I put together a swap package for someone outside of Canada, I make the trip to Bishop's Landing to include some of their local goodies. As mentioned, they do have great selection and therefore something for almost everyone. Their prices are a bit steep, and while some staff are nice and helpful, some are uninterested. But for my swap packages I probably wouldn't come here at all. read more

There are so many things about Sugah! that I love. The custom chocolates, the nostalgic products they carry, the pristine white atmosphere complete with production viewing area. The waterfront location boasts basically anything your sweet tooth could ever desire. Rumcake, candied nuts, chocolates and fudge, but save checking out all of that for after you've made it through the ice cream counter. Young, friendly employees will give you your choice of ice cream flavour, paddle in specialty ingredients from peanut butter fudge to....to......okay, I have no idea what else they have because, um, did you not hear me? PEANUT. BUTTER. FUDGE. But yeah, they do have other stuff there. Or so I've been told. You can get your personal blend to go in an adorable little box reminiscent of quintessential Chinese takeout and keep on trucking, which is great because calories don't count if you're moving while eating, right? You can get a full sugar fix from the wide selection of funky, retro candy and gum as well as choose from Sugah's custom dark and milk chocolate bar collection. Lots of combinations to choose from including sea salt and chocolate, chocolate with pretezels, retro s'mores. You get the idea. And it's made on site, making it a perfect gift/souvenir of Nova Scotia. If it's a hot day, you might want to grab an ice cream. Sugah! makes ice cream fun by letting you choose a flavour and then choose a "mixin" which could be homemade fudge (my favourite), nuts, candy or whatever intriguing ingredients they have on offer that day. The ice cream is described as hand paddled, but it's actually commercial ice cream that is hand mixed with your mixin if that makes sense. The staff mix the ice cream and the ingredient in front of you on a frozen marble slab. My fav combo is vanilla with brown sugar fudge. You can choose from a sugar cone or my preference, an adorable Chinese food box. On a hot day, the line up can be long. I find that it does move along quite quickly, but they could do with some line engineering as there is often confusion at the cash where sometimes you are left waiting ten minutes to pay because of awkward merging of candy and ice cream lines. Overall, though, Sugah! Is a great place to stop when strolling the waterfront boardwalk. With reasonable prices (perhaps the best ice cream prices on the waterfront) for the quality you get, it's a sure bet. read more

A store worth sugar crashing from! Sugah is a fun store! If I was a child I would lose my mind every time I walked in. They have every candy option I like, from ice cream to chocolate bars, clusters and cakes! So its sort of an Ice Cream store for kids and for adults. The staff are a lot of fun and probably have tons of patience. The reason I say that is because they are very close to where the cruise ships come in and I know what its like working with cruise ship guests. In a busy season there would be thousands of tourists going in and out of that store every single day. So my hats off to the staff who still smile and work hard for the customer's. Their pricing is pretty good. Not the best but I think I understand why. it seems as they want to be more of a higher end quality Ice Cream and Candy store. And they are I won't deny that! But with the addition of Cold Stone Ice Cream to the city, they might have their work cut out for them. That being said, Sugah is right downtown on the waterfront and Cold Stone is on the other end of town. So I don't think Sugah is going to feel the pinch any time soon. This store has great Ice Cream! If you aren't satisfied, then you simply didn't like Ice Cream to begin with! It doesn't have too much sugar and not enough for me to get bored with it as well. I absolutely love Sugah! I don't recall a time when I went for a walk along the waterfront and didn't stop in at Sugah! The real show stopper at Sugah! is the amazing hand paddled ice cream! They not only have a great variety of ice creams, but a huge assortment of mix ins. The hardest part is deciding which mix in(s) to choose. On those glorious summer days, the line up for ice cream can be out the door. I, however, have never let this deter me, and it shouldn't deter you either. It's well worth the wait to watch the friendly staff throw together your creation. As other reviewers have mentioned. the portions are LARGE! If it's really hot outside I'm usually unable to finish it before it melts - so go with an empty stomach and eat fast! Great location to find interesting chocolates on the boardwalk. There are really neat flavours including chipotle pistachio, apricot/cranberry, orange, coffee (Fog Burner), and maple sugar-coated - in white, milk, and dark chocolate combinations. I really enjoyed the coffee and chile/pistachio combinations, and have yet to sample the maple sugar bar waiting for me in my cupboard that came highly recommended by a friend. I didn't try the ice cream but I heard it isn't homemade ice cream, rather it's a well-known local brand just hand-paddled with their chocolates, which I'm sure would probably be still be pretty good. In my 3 years of Hali living, Only recently have I checked into this shop for a look, and I do report that it is all its hyped up to be. The interior is clean, crisp and mimics the influence of perfection. White walls and pristine packaging set the pace, and visitors are easily taken through a long line of chocolate, sugary options. A highlight here were the medleys. Chocolate covered almonds mixed in with a variety of goodies? Yes, please. This place proved to be a tough place for this Libra (with the character trait of indecisiveness) as there was absolutely an overflow of prospective treats. I opted for the Cluster Concoction, which looked like a great safe bet. I noticed the NS Concoction, which actually included a sweetified medley of local berries! Those who buy local can certainly enjoy this shop. Besides packaged up goods to go, There is also a bar for on the spot servings. Hand paddled ice cream in many flavours and all the fixings had a line-up of folks, and it all looked promising. Overall, Sugah is a well produced sugar pit for all to enjoy. I bought a bag or Salt Water Taffy and Ice Cream. The prices were decent. Not crazy on the selection of ice cream flavours or sweets. However I certainly didnt feel without. The ice vream i got was coffee with peant butter fudge mix in, on a waffle cone. It is neither of those things (unfortunately) but it is the spot to go for among other treats, the best paddled ice cream in the city. Paddled ice cream is an awesome concept because it allows you to choose your flavor of ice cream, the treats that go i the mix and the type of cone you want. It's true that the ice cream can get pretty soft during the paddling (which is a good sign that your ice cream creation is well mixed) so I usually get a bowl. The paddled ice cream at Sugah is pretty expensive, much more than you pay for a Farmers or Scotsburn cone, but it's a nice treat every once and awhile. While browsing the rest of the shop, I was like a kid in a candy store (pun most definitely intended). The prepackaged candy comes in pretty small portions so it's easy to sample a little bit of everything and not spend too much money. The deal at Sugah - which seems like a great idea - is that you order your basic flavour of ice cream and then pick some "mixin's" - whereby the obedient ice cream server then paddles, mixes, and generally grunts and groans to get your ingredients mixed into your ice cream and get it all onto a cone and get you to the cash before the whole affair goes south and you walk out with a big, dripping cone of mush. See, it takes for EVER to get that all mixed up, and the lineup goes to chaos behind you and the whole thing just turns into a giant disaster. At least, in my experience. Perhaps there weren't enough people working the two times i tried this. But each time, I just got frustrated with the long wait and the mediocre result. I scream... ICE CREAM!!! Anyone who truly appreciates the colder side of sweets really must check this place out. Locally owned, it's Halifax's chilled pride on the waterfront. If iced sweets arn't your bag of treats, don't fret, they have shelves of candy. Everything from Pez to fudge. Pick any flavour of ice cream (they had about 6 when I was there... I think they have more in the summer) and they can hand paddle in a great selection of mixin's on a chilled stone slab. The shop is gorgeous and you can smell the sweetness as soon as you walk though the doors. Clean, bright and colourful, everything a candy store should be. The staff are very friendly as well. Only complaint... when I asked for my mint chocolate chip iced cream in a cup, it came in a take-out box. Initially I thought it was cool... biodegradable... but then the ice cream melted a bit and it got messy quick. Stopped by Sugah last night before watching the fireworks that were part of the Tall Ships festival. Line up was about 15 people deep and I was surprised to see they only had two people serving (with another on cash). Seemed a little understaffed for a Sunday evening in the summer during a festival/fireworks but the staff were still friendly and upbeat when we finally got up to the counter to order. They had about 10 different flavours of homemade ice cream (vanilla, coffee, blueberry, mint chip and chocolate are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head) and the mix ins! Oh my goodness! Several different kinds of homemade fudge, whiskey cake, rum cake, dried cranberries, gummie bears, cookie dough, beer brittle, the list goes on! I chose coffee ice cream with brown sugar fudge and rum cake in a waffle cone. So good! One large scoop of ice cream + 1 mix in = $3.95 Two large scoops of ice cream + 2 mix ins = $4.95 Very reasonable! Will definitely be back. read more

I've only had the ice cream -- admittedly there's much more here including candy, chocolates, nuts, even Pezz circa sometime when Blondie was still fashionable. The ice cream was done in a super original way -- three big scoops minimum of plain ice cream hand 'mashed' on a frozen board with your choice of whatever (nuts, cookie dough, peanut butter mix, brown sugar) The ice cream is very rich, and very sweet (maybe the same thing). If anything to complain about ... maybe too rich... All in all, a great experience of flavor on the waterfront in Halifax that's open till 9pm nightly. read more

Their homemade brittle is very good. They have a handful of flavours which is great if you're a brittle fan, and it is made in store in Halifax so that is even better. I would have given a higher rating BUT customer service is everything and this was lacking very much.
