Don't know about the name (honestly had no idea what this place was when we first spotted it driving into Halifax), but it boasts and delivers on an extensive assortment of old and new candies, treats, and toys. Candies old and new. Novelty sweets you have not seen since you were a kid. The interior of the store is done in a random artsy style completed by the owner. You can look around and be amazed by very unique art reminding me of Willie Wonka in Charlie and the chocolate factory. Once upon a time, I worked for FL, but not for this location. I was a Bedford gal, and while that shop is still my favourite, I have to admit that the Downtown Freak does have a charm all of its own. It's a bit hard to review this place without sounding like I'm writing down their entire inventory. The truth is, there is just SO MUCH packed into this tiny little store, that it'll probably take two or three visits before you manage to take it all in. Not to mention the fact that they get new stock regularly. This is where you find the candy of your childhood, the candy of today and some candy that is actually meant to taste gross. I don't get you, soap gum. I didn't get it then, and I don't get it now. There's also homemade milkshakes in summer, a massive collection of bobble-heads, Freak Lunchbox T-Shirts and Hoodies (that are wicked comfy, I might add) and a fridge full of unusual soda and energy drink flavours. One wall is devoted to gag gifts, ice cubs with bugs in them, x-ray specs, and other things like that. This is a GREAT place for stuffing gift bags, party favours or stockings. It's also not uncommon to see starry-eyed couples picking out candy in the shades of their wedding, which is often hilarious as the flavours NEVER match. Baby blue and brown? Root Beer and Berries. Green and Yellow? Pineapple and Jalapeno. Always read the labels, people! The only thing I don't like about this spot is that it's almost too tiny, especially given how popular its become. Unless you like pushing your way through tourists and screaming children, I don't suggest you go down there on a Saturday afternoon. But on a summer night when you're strolling around town and could use a little pick me up? Freak Lunchbox will welcome you with open arms. read more

The outside of this place looks like something from a carnival; the inside smells like a candy factory; and there is so much stuff packed into this store it's almost distracting to the eye. Before I was even able to browse around I was happily greeted by the two people working the cashier. They were both so positive and upbeat and really seemed to like their jobs. I can only assume they were on some kind of sugar high from working in this candy store! The first thing that caught my eye in here was a Pez set of all the Wizard of Oz characters. As a child, I would have LOVED to have this collection. As an adult I would still LOVE to have this collection. They also had a set of Disney Princess Pez dispensers, which is cute for the little Disney girls out there. Not only is this place full of all different kinds of candies and chocolates, but it also has some great novelty gifts. There are cake toppers of reluctant bride and grooms, a 'Grow up to be Gay' kit, which contained a magnetic hairdryer, brush, lipstick, etc. If I ever have a gigantic sweet tooth, or just need something funny and silly to give as a gift, Freak Lunchbox is starting to crawl its way to the top of my list. read more

The staff are super friendly and helpful, even though the space can be tight and there can be crowds of little ankle biters clamoring to their exasperated parents for more sugar. Nothing here is cheap, but the stuff is quality so totally worth it. read more

Downtown would not be complete without a trip to the Freak Lunchbox. Maybe it was the sunny beautiful day out that attracted so many people here today. Or maybe it was just the fact that if you can't find it here, then you will be out of luck on that hunt for that special candy. We were on the hunt for Rock Candy, we were at other shops but no one carried them. Freak Lunchbox does, they also carry the Chocolate Charleston Bar. You just have to love this spot, jammed to the roof with goodies, something for everyone. I especially loved the little Chinese takeout boxes you can use to put your mixed candy in. The Freak Lunchbox might be one of my favorite spots in the city. Following in my fathers chocolate monster footsteps, I find myself running up over my lunch break at least one a month for a sweet snack. Things I love about the Freak Lunchbox: (1) The amazingly friendly staff members who are always smiling and engaging from the second you walk in the door (2) The bulk candy that you can mix and match into one bag for the same overall price... brilliant! (3) The amazing assortment of old school candy that takes you back to elementary school. Helllo pez dispensers!! I also continue to look for bubble gum toothpaste when I go in - I used to love that junk! (4) The overall atmosphere is so up-beat and high energy that even when you go in on a gross rainy day, which, let's be honest, is about 50% of the time in Halifax, you are instantly in a better mood. This is my experience EVERY TIME I set foot into the Freak Lunchbox. I say this in the most loving way, of course. I absolutely adore this place and the fun retro treats they have to offer, plus the abundance of delicious candy! They literally have something for everyone, or in my case everything for me! If you are looking for a gift, look no further! They have hilarious gag gifts and retro memorabilia that will make anyone smile! I was recently there by accident but was on the hunt for a bachelorette gift. I, myself, do not love the idea of buying lingerie for my friend and walking into the freak lunchbox the solution to this problem was solved! A Candy Bra! Hilarious! (yet still potentially practical...depending!) She loved it and now it seems to be the new "IT" gift between our friends for that occasion! I obviously did not leave empty handed for MY OWN needs....I spiraled and ended up spending over 30$ on candy...now that DOES include the gift...but let's just say, it was not the bulk of that purchase! There is just so much to chose from and the bulk candy is priced by weight which is nice because you can take as much of one or as little of another and not have 80,000 different bags on the go! (this is probably why it is so easy to spend money!) If you are out for a stroll or after a meal...might be worth a peak in! Ranging from vintage, gourmet and common goodies to weird and wacky toys, etc. Freak Lunchbox is a fun place to visit if you haven't before or even if you have. I went there the first time the other day with big expectations, and although I was struck with some nostalgia seeing candies I haven't seen since I was a wee one, I was a little disappointed in how small the size of the store was because of how crowded it was. I could hardly enjoy browsing all the products, because there was almost always someone trying to get through the tight quarters. Okay okay okay...There isn't much more that I can say about this candy castle. Yep, you can make a mixed bag of all your favourite chocolates, gummies and jellybeans. Sure, you can find vintage candy throwbacks and bobblehead Jesus. But what you may not have known is that this is my go-to destination for the best milkshakes in the city. Oh yes, my friends. Their milkshakes bring this boy to the yard. And I'm like, it's better than yours. B-line for the cash and their super friendly and fun staff will hook you up, not just with a cold, thick, creamy concoction, but probably also a laugh or two. You can mix your milkshake flavours to create your own personal masterpiece, although you'd be a damn fool to not go with my specialty: vanilla, peanut butter and butterscotch. A DAMN FOOL, I SAY. It's not exactly cheap but it's definitely far more than one mere mortal can handle on his or her own. The solution? Date it up! I used to love this store back in my high school days. Now, not so much. Mostly due to the lack of vegan candy options. It's still a colourful delight on the eyes and definitely a place children dream of but it would really be nice to see them bring more cruelty-free candy to the mainstream with their store. Ingredients lists would also be a nice feature to add to their candy shelves. Oh. My. God. Seriously. I could basically just repeat that for this entire review, and that sums up how I feel about Freak Lunchbox. It is the Best. Place. Ever. EVER. This is probably getting irritating, so I'll stop, but for realz, it's awesomesauce. Thing one: British chocolate. YES! That stuff is so much better than our chocolate (and don't get me wrong, I like our chocolate), but the Brits do it really really right. And having it available in my own backyard (and only steps from work - a bit dangereux, I will say) means that I don't have to embarrass myself by buying $60 worth of chocolate every time I go through Heathrow airport. People start to look at you funny. Thing two: Jelly Bellies! Oh man, I love those things. I typically end every date Boyfriend and I go on by demanding to go to Freak Lunchbox, drunkenly buying $10 worth of pina colada Jelly Bellies, and collapsing at home in a sugar coma. Clearly, I'm the best date ever. Thing three: Candy by weight! And hilarious candy! They once had tiny gummy puffins. PUFFINS! Just super unique options and all at your finger tips. Kudos, Freak Lunchbox, kudos. The ONLY and I mean ONLY thing I could ever complain about is that once in a while, the sales staff are a smidge overenthusiastic. And at the end of the day, enthusiasm is preferable to apathy, so it's not much of a complaint. But I have bad nerves and being yelled at (even when it's just saying hello) is a bit off-putting. But everyone should go here on a regular basis, I'm pretty sure it'd make the world a better place. read more

I'm pretty sure any place that sells candy ranks at the top of any list. While walking around Halifax, this place was definitely the most inviting. I mean, they sell candy! I'm a big fan of snacking while walking/eating so this place was a pleasant surprise on my Halifax exploration day. It's actually quite amazing the amount of sugary gifts that they stock. Everything from self serve buckets, to candy from england to lunch boxes. I could probably spend all day in here (and then probably gain 10 pounds instantly). The only thing I can say about this place is that I wish it was bigger. My favorite part about the whole joint is that you get a bag and fill it up with whatever you want and then get it weighed at the front. Mix and match baby, furthering the ghetto. I drove away from a place on Spring Garden, off of Barrington and the time was 8:57pm. And I knew that Freak Lunchbox closes at 9:00pm. I didn't think I was going to make it, but I had to try. I just had a craving for that damn Whatchamacallit bar. I squealed my tires to a halt, parked right in front of Freak Lunchbox. I check the time -- it's exactly 9:00pm on the dashboard clock. Will they let me in? OF COURSE! They are the Freak Lunchbox! I open the door and just say out loud to anyone - "Did I make it?!?" The 2 girls working "Oh yeah! -- Come on in!" Big smiles. Freak Lunchbox is the type of place I would have gone to on a near daily basis growing up. You see, I love candy. Love love love! And I also love chocolate. Love love love! And FLb has tons of both! It might be for the best, for the health of my teeth and blood, that I didn't discover this place until well after I moved here. FLb specializes in lots of variety of candy offerings such as a jelly-jean station near the entrance with dozens of flavours, probably even including earwax and frog-wart flavours. To the right side there are novelty toys and candies that people twice my age can remember from their own childhood. Heck, even for me, at the ripe old age of (20s), there are candies and bars that I remember from the 80s and early 90s that I totally forgot about. There are several places for a wide assortment of chocolate bars that are commonly found in stores, or not. They sometimes have that rare type of Twix or KitKat that was only out for a short time or never out here at all. And in the back... my favourite area. Candy in bulk! Grab a bag and fill it up with anything and everything. The selection changes on a semi-regular basis so if there's a missing fav one day, it might be back. Admittedly, I grab two bags of candy. One for the rubber and sours and one for just the chocolate types. Though, it seems like no matter how hard I try to limit myself to one, MAYBE two, of each kind I like, I still can't seem to leave with anything less than a heaping bag full. Woe is me, I guess. So now that I've discovered FLb, how often do I drop by? I honestly try not to go too much because I know myself too well. It's become more of a treat for me now. I rewarded myself a few years ago following graduation with a trip to FLb, and I haven't been back....JUST KIDDING! I couldn't stay away for that long. It's been a few weeks, at the most. Amazing amount of candy under one tiny roof! Although you may be able to find some of these candies cheaper elsewhere- you will have to do a lot of hunting. At FL- it's all in one spot. With awesome hand-written name tags...the candy is wonderfully displayed all along the wall. And mountains of other confections (i.e. chocolate) in the middle. As well, they have awesome little toys and gadgets lining the front of the store. It's a great place to spend a few bucks for a pick me up on a bad day. When I go into the Freak Lunchbox, I like to get two bags: one for chocolates and one for gummies. My mind goes blank as I scoop sourpatch kids, gummy-worms, sour soothers, Swedish berries, fuzzy peaches AND THEN kisses, tiny crispy-crunch bars, m&ms, chocolate covered almonds, rieces pieces - until my wrist is sore and I couldn't possibly lift another morsel of candy. Even the boxes the bags come in are kooky...everything's just so stinkin' cool! Lets start with the good. Their selection is amazing! Especially for the size of the store. They have managed to cram just about every candy I enjoyed as a kid along with the new ones today's young wipper-snapper's enjoy. Customer service is quick and knowledgeable. One downside is the unenthusiastic expression on the Customer Service Representatives. Admittedly I might have been going on the wrong days and met the wrong ones working there. But I'm a stickler for good Customer Service and its so easy for someone to smile. In fact, years ago, McDonald's even gave them away free! Although I'm sure they charge for that now. This shop is just pure fun. It offers everything from gag gifts to bulk candy to specialty chocolate bars you can't find in most stores, and so much more. Be forewarned - it's a popular spot and often jammed with other patrons. But the tunes they have blaring, the colourful surroundings, the smiling faces behind the counter, and the fact that you're buying delicious treats will make it all okay. I completely forgot how much fun this little store is! I wandered in with a coworker a few days ago for this first time in quite a few years. It was like a sweet little trip down memory lane. I loved seeing all the candies from when I was a kid that you just don't see anymore. When I walked in I was in a bit of a rotten mood. When I walked out all I could say was "Hey, that was fun!". Love, love, love the lunchbox. It is like a teeny, tiny museum that takes back to your childhood. Well... if you are older. :-) The staff are fun, the sites are incredible and the candy is grand! There is everything crammed into this little store.... candy, novelty items and even shirts for sale! My fav. would have to be the WAX LIPS and SQUIRT gum. Ahhhh, the memories! The only downfall is the price. It is not cheap to shop at the lunchbox, however I say you are getting your admission to the museum (haha) included in the price. You know when you have a day from hell and you just can't take it anymore? Some people grab a beer, I grab a piece (or perhaps several pieces) of chocolate. Luckily enough I work perhaps 30 steps (or if I take small steps - 40) from this store and I inevitably wander there once a week (i mean once in a while). The selection is enormous, the staff are fun and upbeat and although I have not tried the milkshakes I understand they are awesome! I have purchased bars that I have not enjoyed since I was young (er). Although on a side note - I am lusting after Rowntree Maple Buds. Back to my review. Store is clean, and the bins are well stocked. I have taken my nieces and nephew there and their eyes bulge! Go, and take in the fun of this place. Enjoy a pop shoppe pop or a jones. It's impossible to miss, thanks to it's very colourful exterior amidst all the brick shops on Barrington Street. Freak Lunchbox is an amazing store filled with all sorts of interesting things. Not only can you buy any candy you could think of, but they have tons of other neat stuff as well. Being both a freak and a closet candy junkie, to me this place is like St Catherine's street (Montreal) to a crack head. -drool- Counter staff are always friendly, quirky and humourous. They are my dealer of choice for my candy addiction. Sure I can get it cheaper at the bulk barn sometimes, but this place is locally owned and has a great atmosphere. And the selection seems endless. The Freak Lunchbox is every child's dream candy store, on acid. On the street you are greeted by colorful signs featuring a cartoon Willy Wonka and window art with sayings like "Lucy Lu buys here fuzzy peaches here". The interior of the store is just as saliva inducing sweet, with rows of bulk candy and shelves of novelty items and treats that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in this city. Some of my favorite purchases at The Freak Lunchbox have been; a vintage looking batman piggy bank for my boyfriend, Ricky Martin trading cards with song lyrics written on the backs, and edible lingerie that I got for my friend as a gag gift. The candy bulk candy here is pretty standard, your usual Swedish berries, chocolate covered nuts and hot cherry lips. The magnitude of bulk candy can mean that it sometimes isn't the freshest (pieces sticking together, chewy candy is a little too hard, etc.) but you get what you pay for at this store. Prices start pretty low for the basic bulk candy, so I like to get a little of everything. This is the only spot in town where I can find my all time favorite 5 cent candy; coke bottles. The assortment of gourmet Jelly Beans at this location is awesome, specially if you find yourself getting int the Easter spirit (as I am). Freak Lunchbox is a cool store and great if you are looking for cheap, fun candy. If you are looking for better quality chocolate or fancier gifts than edible undergarments, you wont them here. Unique candy store with amusing décor. As their window claimed, they do have a "ferocious" selection of candy with the basics (gummy bears, chocolate-covered raisins, jelly beans) and candy with charming names like "I Heart York" for York patties, "Chocolate Rox" for M&M-like chocolates that looked like rocks. Even if you don't go there to buy sweets, then at least go there to be amused with the many quirks inside the store. read more

I don't really have the world's biggest sweet tooth. I like candy, but I'm not constantly craving it...unless of course I'm walking by the Freak Lunchbox. When down on this end of Barrington, all bets are off. What I like most about this place is that they carry my brand of cigarettes...Popeye Cigarettes! I used to love sucking on these sugar sticks as a child (Hook 'em when they're young) and now I can relive the experience all over again. The Freak Lunchbox definitely excels in the field of nostalgic candy. They carry many candies that I had assumed were long out of production, which can lead to a lot of "oh wow, I haven't had one of these in ages!" There are a few things I don't like about the lunchbox, most notably its zany colors. I guess kids might love it, but I can't say I'm a fan. Secondly, I don't understand why, with so much good candy to sell, they would have a section where you can get jellybeans that taste like boogers and other nasty tasting delights. Again, I guess kids might love tormenting they're friends with a dirt flavored jelly bean, but trust me kids, that joke's going to get old. How about instead we stock up on more Wonka Bars!? Wouldn't that be more fun? I think so. Also, one final note, if you don't take it from me that the Lunchbox is a great candy store, take it from Alice Cooper, who claims to stop in every time he rolls through Halifax, which is shockingly often.
