They also noticed that its tires were 9 years old with rubber starting to break down. It was an expensive visit to the garage, but all the expenses were listed and I compared with industry averages and VIP charged reasonable prices. This is an efficient and ethical shop that does good work.

My car broke down in an unfamiliar neighborhood, and AAA offered 3 options of places to tow it to…read more I picked VIP because it was the closest to my home. I regret that decision now! I spent a fortune to have my serpentine belt and tensioner replaced + the $250 baseline fee for diagnostics. Mechanic friends told me that I was way overcharged for the serpentine belt and tensioner, and that unless it was completely fried, that was probably not what caused my car to die in the first place. VIP then they told me that I needed my radiator replaced and that it was leaking coolant so badly that if I drove the car anywhere farther than the grocery store, the coolant could all leak out and the engine would seize up. They could fix it all for $1700 more, but they couldn't get to it for another couple of days. Meanwhile, I had to drive to my mom's house 350 miles away for a family emergency, so I opted to not get the radiator. When I drove the car home (~2 miles), I checked the coolant and there was none in the reservoir (VIP said they had topped it off). I talked to a mechanic friend, and he said there was no way that much coolant could leak out in a 2-mile trip-- just buy a jug of it, fill it up, and check it along the way on the 350 mile trip. I did that. When I arrived at my destination, the coolant level had barely budged. That seemed a little sketchy, but then... I took the car to my family's favorite repair place. They said the radiator was fine, and nothing was leaking; it just needed a new hose connector and for $50 I was good to go. They also said $1700 was an insane price for a radiator replacement. So good. Dodged that bullet. BUT THEN... I took my cat to the emergency room a couple days later and when attempting to leave, the car was dead. Completely dead-- when you turned the key, nothing. No lights, no clicking, absolutely nothing. My cat and I took an Uber home, and the next day I had a mechanic friend drop me off at my dead car. He looked at it and found that when VIP had replaced the battery (I am pretty sure I didn't need a new battery as my old one was only about a year old), they hadn't tightened down any of the screws, so it shook itself loose and disconnected. We tightened the screws (they were so loose we could have removed them by hand with no issues), and it's been fine ever since. So, TL;DR: 1. They said they had topped off the coolant when they had not. 2. They replaced the battery when they didn't need to, 3. They didn't tighten down the battery housing, causing my car to unexpectedly die. 4. They attepted to scare me into thinking I needed a part that they were going to overcharge me for. 5. The part they did fix was probably not the cause of my original problem. So yeah, I do not recommend this place.

I brought my '05 Volkswagen in for some cosmetic work on the front bumper and fender. Tony quoted a price below what I'd gotten elsewhere and also pointed out a few other cosmetic details that he would fix on the house. When I picked the car up a few days later, it looked practically new--not bad for a 16-year-old car! In addition to doing great work, Tony's just a likable guy. The kind of person you're happy to do business with. Thanks, Tony! I'll definitely be back the next time my car needs body work.

However, this morning, I was reminded that even in one of the most progressive states in this country, sexism still exists. I went to Southie Auto Service because my exhaust had been making a loud noise for weeks, and my car had failed the Massachusetts inspection over the weekend. When I arrived at the shop, I briefly explained the situation, and they offered to take a look at my car. As I was walking toward the car with one of the men who works at the shop, I wanted to tell him that he would be able to hear the noise when the car started. However, in the middle of my sentence, he put his hand over his mouth and said, "Shh." I know I looked shocked, and he then proceeded to say that he would be able to hear the noise himself. Regardless of what he thought he could do, you never ask a customer to shut up. He drove the car onto the lift and confirmed that the exhaust had a hole in it, which, of course, was no surprise to me because the people at the Massachusetts inspection station had already suggested this. However, he missed this piece of information by asking me to stop talking. When the car was on the lift, this man told me that I could now talk. I told him that no one had ever asked me to shut up before, and he was offended by my comment. He said that doing so would be rude and that all he had done was ask me to stop talking. This is what some men do not understand. Asking a woman to stop talking, in any way or form, is essentially the same as asking her to shut up and not express herself. Then he proceeded to tell me that if I did not like it, I could take my car somewhere else. I told him that I might, and he immediately asked the other mechanic to bring the car down because I was going to take the car. I took my car to another nearby shop, and the man who helped me was a complete gentleman. I would not recommend Southie Auto Service. No customer should have to tolerate this kind of condescending behavior simply because they are a woman seeking help with her car.

I figured that the slow oil leak finally gave out with the cold weather and the gasket blew in the engine. I honestly figured I would be scrapping my car today. After walking over and talking to one of the mechanics, Jerry. He told me to pull my car around and he would check it out for me today and give me a call if it's fixable or not worth it (I told him I didn't really want to put money into the car). He said they were super busy today but he will squeeze me in. Once I got there he asked if I could hang for a few min to diagnose the car and checked it out immediately. After lifting the car and checking everything they realized it was a clogged oil filter. It was so clogged that oil wasn't passing through and some of it was leaking everywhere. When they removed it I think a few of the guys got covered in oil (I kinda felt bad to be honest but they all laughed it off). Because oil got everywhere they also proceeded to clean underneath my car with some foam stuff and then ran it a little to burn what was left off. They were incredibly funny, helpful, patient, personable and honest. I spoke mostly to Jerry and the gentleman inside at the register who was also amazing. Even though I live 30 min from here and they helped me in a pinch, I will definitely bring my car back if anything else goes wrong. Service was incredible.

I'm writing this review because they truly deserve the recognition--good, trustworthy auto shops like this are rare, especially in the Boston area!
