Walked in on a Wednesday morning to make an appointment, car was hit on the highway pretty hard with no noticeable damage, just wanted someone to check the frame wasn't bent etc. Told them all this and make an appointment for Monday morning 7:30AM. My spouse typically uses the car to drive to school (we live in southie near Emerson) so I wake up to drive there and back to drop off at 6am Monday then get to the shop to be told they don't have an appointment for me and they don't even look at frames so they can't help me. Same guy I made an appointment with in person on Wednesday. He almost smiled and laughed like he was happy to inconvenience us. Went by to drop off my car after calling about needing a to replace a flex pipe in the exhaust system and they quoted me $2600 and said it would take 5-7 days to order the part. I then went to a Shell station instead and was quoted $250 and they did the work the same day. Don't go here - I used to go to Emerson when Gary owned the establishment but the new ownership are shady and terrible service. They replaced all 4 breaks in my car and as soon as I left their garage, my rear breaks were squeaking. I brought the car back 4x and each time they said "we don't hear anything". I also recorded the squeaking while driving, showing the video to an employee and he said, "I don't hear anything but I also have bad hearing". Now less than 1 year later, the rear breaks are shot and need to be replaced. A waste of time, money and a lot of frustration. They don't honor their work and as a woman, I felt like they just dismissed my claims the breaks were still squeaking (clearly something was wrong). read more

Needed a tail light replaced. Got an estimate. Made an appointment. Brought car in. At 5:00PM I called to check in on the repair. They said they called me as they had ordered the wrong part. I looked at my missed calls and they had in fact called me once. Just failed to leave a message and failed to call back a second time. They apologized for not leaving a message. I wasted a whole day. I politely explained that they should communicate with their customers better, to which they agreed and apologized for not doing so. Left car with them for repair next day. When I picked up the car the cost was $70 above the estimate. Owner was disrespectful and said they told me plus labor. Which he did not. If they had accurately quoted me, I would have called around to other shops like Fran's Auto for pricing. BTW in 6 years, I never had an issue like this with Fran. And for the 20 years before that I never had an issue with my prior mechanic in the suburbs. I have learned my lesson. Do not trust Emerson Auto. Went there today to get my car inspected, mind you I know I have a dent in my car, never had a problem with it getting inspected before due to the fact that it's in the quarter panel no where near the wheel well and it doesn't effect my car's performance. Didn't think it was an issue. Never has been in the past. When I called they said to double park outside and we will get your car when we can. Then they told me cash only when I pay? which I found kind of suspicious. After looking over my car the non English speaking person who examined my car told me that it wouldn't pass because of the dent. And when I tried to confront him about it he made some excuses about the shop had cameras and that they could loose there license??? This is insane! Everything about this seems very suspect. Aside from the small dent in the quarter panel, my car is completely fine. I just bought new tires and had all the coils in my engine replaced. I'm starting to believe that the people that work there were just trying to take advantage of me because I'm a woman and now I'm starting to wonder if the people that confronted me were even legal American citizens due to the fact that they demanded cash only!? I live less then three blocks away from this place and I've been bringing my cars to the previous owners for many years and they were always proper and never treated me with the kind of disrespect I felt today. Air filter labor ($50.00), $0 at Valvoline. Cabin air filter labor ($40.00). Neither filter required a tool to replace them. $90 labor for 10-15 minutes work, for a senior citizen, is just plain highway robbery. Having my brakes done here has become almost a yearly thing for me living in Southie and parking outdoors. I literally had them done 4 times. 3 times I brought in my own parts and they installed them, and last year I had them re do everything themselves. I made sure to drive the car enough to keep everything moving but the pads were already rubbing when they fixed it and in less than a year my pads were down to metal again. I decide to order my own rotors and pads and do it myself this time. I can't find the time to do it, so I go to Emerson to have them install once again. Now they refuse to do the work with my parts because "it's like bringing a steak to a restaurant" which is a horrible analogy, its literally a 30 minute job where you unscrew 12 bolts per side, and screw them back in and charge me $160. I should also add that in the past the man who I am guessing is the father had been very rude to both me and my gf at separate times. I've spend well over $7k here, and unfortunately, I'll never be back. TL;DR - They've replaced all my brakes last year, rotors are warped because the brakes were rubbing the second I left. I bring in my own parts (Which i had done 3 other times) and they refuse to do the work. read more

I had a great first time experience with these guys; went in for an oil change and diagnostic on some odd sounds. The only downside of this place is that there is no lot; only street parking and must have "resident" permit after 6p. I showed up early and was luckily able to find parking easily. Sean was friendly and knowledgeable; called to let me know my car was ready for pickup earlier than anticipated, figured out what the noise was, and charged exactly what he estimated ($100 oil change). Absolutely terrible, rude, sketchy service and communication. I wouldn't trust these guys to change a tire let alone any more serious issues. Was recommended this local shop for an issue with my car leaving it unable to pass inspection. After the first attempt to fix the issue, the check engine light immediately came back on. I brought the car back and they brushed it off saying the part they received to replace it with was probably bad/broken (????). They claimed to fix the issue, but immediately the light came back on again. Ultimately, I had to bring the car back to them FOUR times and they could never fix the problem. All throughout they were vague and sketchy in their communication, very disrespectful despite us politely asking to have this issue addressed. Ultimately, when we asked for our money back they requested to take the parts they used back and wouldn't even reimburse us for the full value of the parts they took. They also parked my car on the street where it was ticketed (bc It wouldn't pass inspection because THEY couldn't fix it) and refused to pay the cost of the ticket. They fixed my car for me with clearly less than adequate materials as I then had to have that same issue redone by another South Boston automobile service shop and for $200 less. On top of overcharging me $200, having shoddy craftsmanship that caused me to have to get my car fixed for the same issue AGAIN, they also illegally parked my car while it was in their care and then made me pay the parking ticket I received. Then...the next afternoon, amidst a very sketchy 1/2 hour negotiation to try to even understand the work they claimed was needed,...they informed me they don't drive the vehicles to diagnose, nor test their work. Under a lot of pressure I submitted... 3 days of work, $850 and 2 months later....Problems came back. Went to pay for the car and it was on the street with a PARKING TKT. Desk told me i would have to fight it as they thought they parked the car legally. What???? Your'e suppoed to fight the ticket when they park your car on street? ??? Even worse car broke down on I93, one month later. I took my 2012 Jeep Wrangler in for service recently. I dropped it off at 8AM on Tuesday morning. I told them that the left rear tire was low & I had put air in it recently. Maybe slow leak? Spare is new so swap them. Also, right front directional was out. At 4PM when I hadn't heard anything I called & was told that they hadn't looked at it & would not get to it bc they close @ 5PM. They kept it over night saying that they would get to in the morning. Wednesday afternoon @ 4:30PM I called & was again told that they hadn't gotten to it!! Mate could get it in soon to "diagnose it!" Interesting as I told them specifically what the the issues were! I picked it up & will never go back again. Initially I thought this place was great, especially for my busy work schedule - easy and flexible to drop car off in morning and pick it up later in the day. I took my car for a simple oil change and tire rotation. They forgot to reset my service light so I had to bring it back a second time, fine. Then, it turns out that my back tire was not tightened enough, so one month later I started hearing a terrible sound in the back while braking, and had to call a mobile mechanic to come fix it in my garage. He put the tire back on correctly, identified some residual damage, and he actually called Emerson Auto to tell them about the mistake. I paid him, called Emerson myself, but didn't even ask them to pay since they were quite mean to me on the phone, so I let it go. Three months later, I had recurrent problems in the back, took it to a mechanic that I used for 5 years and trust since at this point I don't trust Emerson, and now I have had to replace essentially all the parts involving that tire, the brake plate, etc (and I had full brake and tire replacement two years ago with 10K miles since, so these parts were not old). Overall this mistake cost me over $500. I called Emerson to report this issue and was met with such rudeness on the phone that it was shocking. They took no accountability and frankly bullied me, "it was a previous owner then", "you took it somewhere else you should've brought it back here, you have no proof", "just say what you want to say... say it... yeah we aren't paying for that". I finally got the Emerson owner/manager to agree to chat with my mechanic who fixed my car for good, and then when my mechanic called Emerson, they didn't call him back. I'm giving up because it's not worth getting bullied again on the phone. This is my first review on yelp in years, and I am not one to call to complain. These guys do good general work, with no frills and no BS. They are a standout in an era when most shops are driven by how many hours their mechanics bill and at what rates. They do what they say they will do. Somtimes, the follow up is a bit lacking and you will need to proactively call them but I would rather know that my rig is being taken care of at a reasonable price! read more

I realized my emissions test sticker had expired when I walked out to my car and found a ticket on it. Ooops! I realized I needed to remedy that situation ASAP or risk another ticket. I quickly turned to my Yelp App and did a quick search for "car inspection" and there popped up Emerson Auto Service! I gave them a called and was told no appointment was needed, things were on a first come first served basis. I asked if there was any wait, found out there wasn't, and 5 minutes later found myself pulling up to the shop. I found a parking spot on the street right alongside the shop, parked my car there, and headed in the front door. I am not sure what someone would have to do if a spot wasn't readily available, which I imagine happens from time to time. It took a couple of minutes for someone to come to the front desk (they were busy working in the back) but then I was helped and handed over my keys, giving them directions where to find my car. The waiting area was kind of dirty, but it's an auto shop, what do you expect? There were also some baby toys sitting on a dirty plastic table which I honestly hope no one's kids every play with. However, the service was quick and efficient. The guy who did my check even offered to scrape off an old college parking pass I had on the windshield, thanks! My car was brought around front and I was on my way, safe from acquiring another parking ticket, for this violation at least. read more

I have been taking my car to Emerson Auto for 10 yrs (4 different cars) and have always found the owner (Art) to be honest, fast and extremely knowledgeable and competent. A few times I have had the dealership tell me I need work done. When I bring it to Art he will tell me if it actually needs to be done or not. On one of those occasions the Nissan dealer told me I needed 4k worth of work. Art and his guys fixed my car on that occasion for $400. I have also sent my current roommate there (unbeknownst to Art). She is a 27 yr old woman and she had the same experience as I have had over the years. She thought she was going to be on the hook for big money and it turned out to be very minor. This is a very honest garage that will take care of you and is more interested in doing the right thing/repeat business rather than ripping people off. read more

I'm a girl who knows little to nothing about cars and I've always been scared of people taking advantage of that. I've always lived near a relative or close friend who owns a garage until I moved to Boston. I went to Emerson Auto because it is close to my house. The first time I went there was to get an inspection sticker. Nothing to complain about. Within the next month I've put almost a thousand dollars in my car, back and forth from this garage. EVerything I could imagine went wrong and they charged me ridiculous amounts for labor. I would bring my car home, and immediatly something else would go wrong. The very last time I brought my car in was because it wouldn't start and come to find out it was just a blown fuse from my dome light. all they ended up doing was unhooking my light and charging me $160 for JUST the labor. And, on top of that. They take forever! and you have to call them to see when you're car is ready. I will NEVER bring my car back here. I will definitely be using them for all my future car needs What do you do when you don't know anything about cars and your car starts to make an awful noise like metal scraping along the ground every time the car moves? COMPLETE MELT DOWN. The screeching, scraping sound was so awful I thought a part of the engine had fallen and was scraping the ground (is that even possible? i have no idea). I live within a few blocks of Emerson and saw the business every day on my drive for work but knew nothing about the business - I called them regardless out of convenience of location since I needed help immediately. I was preparing for the worst. The worst being some massive repair that would hurt the bank account. I called and they told me to come by and they listened to my car and casually told me it was probably a heat shield and that it was nothing to worry about, a minor repair. Because of street cleaning in Southie on Fridays, they couldn't do the repair on Friday but they said to bring it by first thing Monday morning. No big deal - I know how big of a hassle street cleaning is. I dropped my car off on Monday morning and within a few hours, I got the call that a rock had somehow gotten into the engine and was bouncing around - $20 repair! It was quite obvious how little I knew about cars, they easily could've come up with some crazy random repair (which has happened to me before at other places) and charged a ridiculous amount. I also had them change my oil since my car was already there. A synthetic oil change for $65 is an awesome price! read more

I brought my car in to get a safety inspection and they told me that I needed new windshield wipers and I paid for them while I waited for one of the workers to run to the store to buy ones for my car. I though how nice! that is amazing service! But then 3 weeks later when it finally rained again my wipers were still streaking all over the place. I checked my bill again and realized that they had charged me for windshield wipers with out ever giving me wipers! In the mean time I went back to them because my breaks were squeaking. They told me that they had to completely re-build my brakes and it would cost $700. I was shocked, but they told me that it was completely unsafe to drive how they were. 5 months later I had dropped my car of a a place right next to my office to have them look at my breaks because they were squeaking constantly, the new place proceeded to tell me that my breaks were extremely old and that would need to get re-built. when I told them that they were just rebuilt 5 months ago, they told me that I must be mistaken, and maybe Emerson just changed my break pads and cleaned my breaks (which should only be a the most $100-$150) because they were so old and thin that they couldn't get machine cleaned again. Needless to say, Emerson charged me TWICE for things that they didn't do, and I had to pay to get done again later. Stay away! read more

Everything is done correctly; explanations are in plain language; one gets options if there are any; the price is fair. I have been driving from Foxboro for a number of years because I trust Emerson. Just took my car into these guys and they said I only needed my front brakes done which I appreciated. They did an excellent job. Huge waste of time and money. Took my car in because the check engine light was on. They said I needed a new catalytic converter. Paid close to $2k to have this replaced. Light comes back on. They say I need new oxygen sensors. Pay for those. Light comes back on. They say just keep driving it around. I have my annual state inspection coming up so I need this done. It fails the emissions test and they say cat isn't ready, just keep driving. Bring it back after a few weeks, they seem to not know what to do. Fails another emissions test. They suggest replacing the catalytic converter again. I ask them for a refund because they didn't fix the issue and all of a sudden they tell me my car has passed it's inspection. This is great news but when I come pick it up, the check engine light comes back on. I finally take it to a Ford service center and they say all the parts like fine and they wouldn't replace the catalytic converter, so clearly Emerson had no idea what to do and we're just making complete guesses that kept costing me lots of time and energy. Would not trust them anymore and definitely would not recommend! read more

Brought my truck here when I was new to the area because it was convenient. I left if for the day for an oil change. When I arrived at 5 the truck hadn't moved and they didn't change the oil. I chalked it up as a busy day and left it for one more and they did change the oil. Last winter I was due for breaks so I took it there, the cost was a lot more than I expected but again it was a new area so I didn't think much of it. Here we are in July and I already need new breaks again.... I took it to another shop and the guys couldn't believe how shitty the breaks Emerson Auto installed were. Between the breaks being installed and the time I realized I needed new ones again I left it there all day again for an oil change. Yet again they "didn't have time" I never received a call or even a sorry for the trouble. Horribly run business, find another shop.... any other shop. read more

I had been going here for a couple of years thinking they were an ok auto shop near my house. Then my husband brought in his car and they charged him $1800 and the problem persisted. I had my brakes down here at the end of 2016 and from that moment on they were always making noise. I kept taking it back and they would tell me something different, or blamed it on the city. Then I had an exhaust problem. I brought the car in and they told me it was going to be a $1,000. Skeptical, I brought it to a mechanic near my family home and they charged me $75 to fix the problem. Having such a better experience with the mechanic near my family home, I decided to bring him the brake problem. I am not a heavy breaker and my 1st set of brakes lasted me many many years. I am now replacing the entire brake job Emerson supposedly did. It has been a little over a year that these 'new' brakes were put on. I put new in quotes, because the mechanic is not so sure they were ever changed, yet I paid for them. Please take what this shop says with a grain of salt.
