I live in the Windsor/St Kilda East area and it's spoilt for cafe options. Franklin, however, is by far my favourite place.
I discovered Franklin just as they transitioned from being a hole-in-the-wall to a cafe which now has a cosy diner and booth style setting complete with an eclectic mix of vinyl playing in the background.
The team here comprise the friendliest people, and their service is on par with fine dining standards. They're also generous and unpretentious when it comes to their specialist coffee knowledge - so if you want to try something different, don't be afraid to ask.
The menu has evolved over time and now reflects their take on American style diner food so you'll find an Elvis-inspired breakfast burger (bacon, maple syrup, bananas, peanut butter...!) and of course traditional burgers and sliders. There's also jalapeno poppers and Americana shakes but they also serve up breakfast favourites such as bagels, scrambled eggs, muesli, smashed avocado and my boyfriend's go-to - the chorizo breakfast slider. We recently had the spinach and tossed couscous salads with roast chicken - these are so filling and delicious, so if you're after a lighter lunch option, Franklin has you covered.
Best of all, as a writer, I love to find a space where I can hole up for a little while with a coffee, some brunch and my laptop. The layout of the cafe includes six to eight-seater booths and smaller nooks as well as an enclosed courtyard. We booked the courtyard for a Father's Day gathering with the family this year and it was perfect. (During winter the fireplace down the back is expertly lit, keeping you warm and toasty while you sip your coffee).
If you love having a home away from home when you go out for coffee and a bite to eat (and a place where you're not sitting elbow-to-elbow with the next person) then I highly recommend Franklin-Windsor. read more
